Pacheco Park—also known informally as the design district— has been home to our Bella Media offices for the past two and a half years. What a joy it’s been to find ourselves among businesses who are not only our customers and friends, but who also have a deep understanding of design and quality of life. Here, we have everything from Sweetwater Harvest Kitchen restaurant’s healthy, locally grown foods to Santa Fe by Design’s luxurious bathroom fixtures. There are also builders, interior designers, a yoga center, and other business focused on making our day-to-day lives a bit better and more enjoyable—and certainly more beautiful. I’d like to encourage you to come and join us this evening from 4–7 pm, Thursday, September 21, at 1512 Pacheco Street as we celebrate Bark at the Park and have fun with our dogs. There will be many activities and treats for both you and your pet. As a dog owner, I know how rare it is to have an event where pets are welcome. And if you don’t have a dog, representatives from the Santa Fe Animal Shelter will be here with a few furry friends who need a new home. There will be a raffle for an Apple gift card, with the proceeds from the raffle going to the Santa Fe Animal Shelter. Come on and have fun as we celebrate the Equinox with our furry friends in this wonderful complex of interesting people and businesses.

Santa Fe Wine and Chile Fiesta
The enormous tent that houses the Grand Tasting sits on the grounds of The Santa Fe Opera. Inset: Tourists and locals alike flock to Wine and Chile Fiesta to sample New Mexican food and wine.
The 27th annual Santa Fe Wine and Chile Fiesta happens September 27 through October 1. During these five days, over 75 of Santa Fe’s best restaurants will be coupled with more than 90 national wineries. Other events will also take place, such as wine seminars, cooking demos, a film fiesta, guest chef luncheons, tastings, and tours, along with the Gruet Golf Classic and the alwayspopular Grand Tasting. Ticket sales are already in full swing; tickets must be purchased and printed in advance and all events are 21+ only. —Amanda N. Pitman

Bark at the Park
e v ent Imagine a late Victorian–era world in which steam, rather than electricity, is the main power source, and you have the Steampunk concept. In this pop subculture genre, computers sport gears; top hats, elaborate goggles, and corsets are all the rage; while skeleton keys, brass, and gears abound. This year’s event has a Wizard of Oz theme, and involves a costume contest (though costumes are not required), an interactive murder mystery, with various workshops and general fun. The afternoon is followed by an evening of entertainment at the Engine House Cabaret from 8 pm until closing.—Anne Maclachlan
Steampunk Spectacular, September 23, noon–dark, admission $5–$15; evening cabaret 8 pm–closing, $15; Mineshaft Tavern, 2846 NM-14, Madrid; steampunkspectacularnm.com
Bark at the Park, September 21, 4–7 pm, free, 1512 Pacheco, facebook.com/events/1852117948440219/ Right: Diego will be enjoying doggie treats and a photo op with his human— our publisher, Bruce Adams—during this year's Bark at the Park. If you are currently dogless, pups in need of forever homes will be here, too.

getting into gear: Madrid’s Steampunk Spectacular
e vent On Thursday evening, nearly two dozen businesses in Pacheco Park’s Design District complex are teaming up for some canine camaraderie to raise funds for the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society. There’s live music, dog adoption possibilities, a canine costume contest, an obstacle course, and a photo booth. Merchants are offering showroom tours and will have raffle tickets for sale, as well as appetizers for four-legged visitors (who must be up-to-date with vaccinations and kept on a leash at all times) and their owners.—AM

PREVIEWS
Nola Zirin, Yellow Zip, mixed media on panel, 12 x 12"
ENIGMA August Muth and Nola Zirin OTA Contemporary 203 Canyon otacontemporary.com September 22–November 9 Reception September 22, 5–7 pm New York painter Nola Zirin teams up with local hologram artist August Muth in a show that encourages the viewer to consider the relationship of space, light, and time. Shapes and colors in Muth’s holograms change according to the angle from which they are seen. “My work manifests light in space,” he elaborates. “Light becomes this tactile material that you can touch and feel, yet doesn’t have any mass. It’s a magic thing.” Zirin’s abstract mixed media paintings explore depth perception in new ways. “The complexity of these paintings and their virtual orbs mirror the macro and micro layers of the world around us,” she says of her collection.—Anne Maclachlan
Impassioned Season Pippin Contemporary 409 Canyon pippincontemporary.com October 4–17 Reception October 6, 5–7 pm Cody Hooper freely admits fall is his favorite season, renewing his creative energy and opening him to new directions and fresh ideas. Trained as a graphic artist and a watercolorist, Hooper gave up landscapes after a number of autumns, in favor of highly colored abstracts as small as eight inches square and as large as four by six feet. Areas of softer neutrals contrast with swaths of intense hues, the brights made even brighter by their proximity to the quiet areas. Hooper lets his emotions loose in his paintings, enjoying the freedom from the constraints of representational painting. He says, “My wish is to make you want to keep coming back for more so that you may explore your own spirit, inspire who you are, and what you want to become in this lifetime.”—LVS Right: Cody Hooper, Find Your Light, acrylic on panel, 40 x 40"
David Knowlton, Danville, Kansas, oil on canvas, 31 x 55"
Light and Shadow Sorrel Sky Gallery 125 W Palace sorrelsky.com October 6–31 Reception October 6, 5–7:30 pm Sorrel Sky presents paintings by David Knowlton and Martha Kellar. Knowlton paints farm buildings, grain elevators, landforms, and bits of machinery, all in his signature style. Forms are simplified, edges are hard, and shadows distinct. Kellar’s still lifes and portraits are painted much more loosely, with softer shadows and edges. While Knowlton’s work flirts with abstraction, Kellar’s is grounded in realism. Gallery owner Shanan Campbell Wells appreciates the differences in the two painters, but also their similarities. She says of her decision to show them in tandem, “. . . when their works are exhibited together you can observe the elegant, seemingly effortless way they both control light and shadow . . .”.—LVS September 21, 2017 NOW 13
