publisher’s note
Ah, Santa Fe feels so good now that the temperatures are even more pleasant, the sun is still shining brightly, and the crowds have dispersed. It’s a great time of year to go for a hike, a bike ride on our many city bike trails, or an enjoyable meander through our wonderful streets. There’s lots of great music this weekend, as always. Anyone who says that Santa Fe doesn’t have a music scene is not reading this magazine and seeing the array of that’s available. Every week, I’m astonished at what we have to offer. This weekend, there’s everything from alt-country to jazz to the always-interesting music at Meow Wolf. Finally, there are plenty of art openings tomorrow night; this also marks the beginning of the studio tours in our region. This weekend it’s the 19th Annual Rio Costilla Studio Tour, spanning both sides of the Colorado-New Mexico border. It’s free, and features opportunities to visit with sculptors, woodworkers, painters, and other artisans in their studios. Check out the many events on the calendar. There is fun to be had all weekend.

Santa Fe Renaissance Fair Hear ye, hear ye; there is even more to explore in Santa Fe than the gorgeous scenery, captivating art, and delectable food. Wrapping up the summer is the annual Santa Fe Renaissance Fair, a family-friendly trip into the past at El Rancho de las Golondrinas. Jugglers, jesters, and jousters abound, along with the opportunity to explore the arts and sciences of the Renaissance age. There are exhibitions of music, dance, and swordplay, along with plenty of food to fuel visitors. Proceeds help support El Rancho de las Golondrinas and the pre-K through 8th-grade Santa Fe School for the Arts and Sciences. —Anne Maclachlan Santa Fe Renaissance Fair, September 16–17, 10 am–5 pm; $10–$12, kids 12 and under, free; golondrinas.org
Damian Marley at The Bridge Reggae rocks out at The Bridge once again, as Marley sibling Damian “Jr. Gong” makes a tour stop in Santa Fe. Marley’s fourth album, Stony Hill, was released this summer. Rolling Stone calls it “an inspiring 18-track collection” and “a reminder that reggae remains a potent pop force, especially when it’s in the hands of a master.” —AM Damian Marley, September 19, 6–10 pm, $32, The Bridge at Santa Fe Brewing, 37 Fire Pl, santafebrewing.com mus i c
Bring your taste for adventure, swordplay, juggling, music, dance, and food to the Renaissance Fair this weekend.
1945 at Santa Fe Jewish Film Festival On the heels of critical acclaim in European film festivals, the Hungarian film 1945 screens at CCA as part of the Santa Fe Jewish Film Festival. Based on the short story “Homecoming” by Gábor T. Szántó, the film centers on the return of two Orthodox Jews to a small village just after World War II. The question is, the citizens worry, are they the Above: The film 1945 is a chilling mystery set heirs to property illegally seized by the town in a small town in the aftermath of WW II. during the war? Will survivors return? 1945, an official selection of the Berlin International Film Festival, has won awards in the United States, Austria, Germany, and Israel.—AM f ilm

AHA (After Hours Alliance) Progressive Arts Fair 2017 For one day only, the Santa Fe Railyard Plaza will host the 2017 AHA Progressive Arts Fair—now in its seventh year—a full-day celebration of emerging, experimental, interdisciplinary, and interactive art, music, and performance. Visitors can expect more than 25 art booths, two music stages, pop-up performances, a maker’s market, local vendors, food trucks, and of course, more than a few surprises. This event is one of three hosted by AHA during the year—The Art of the Machine, Progressive Arts Fair, and String of Lights: A Holiday Market—all aiming to “create a platform for artists to experiment with showing and performing work free from the requirements that are often laid out by traditional art markets, performance venues, and gallery environments.”—Amanda Jackson e v ent

Pippin Contemporary presents four painters who all begin with landscape painting and end in four very different places. Gallery owner Aleta Pippin’s paintings appear abstract, but the landscape is apparent in her use of color and her compositional elements. The other three painters—Gina Rossi, also from Santa Fe, and Jeffrey Beauchamp and Jami Tobey, both Californians— vary in their approaches. Rossi provides the most realistic view, often working from sketches done on location. Tobey is engaged in an exploration of the geometric elements of the landscape, while the possibilities inherent in oil paint itself form the subtext of Beauchamp’s pieces.—Lisa Van Sickle

Fight Like a Girl Blue Rain Gallery 544 S Guadalupe, blueraingallery.com September 15–30, Reception September 15, 5–7 pm The old taunt “you fight like a girl” takes on a whole new meaning in Erin Currier’s newest paintings. When the “girls” in question include Amanda Nunes, a Brazilian mixed martial artist who is a champion in her weight class; hard-hitting investigative journalist Amy Goodman; Marina Silva, a Brazilian environmentalist and politician; or Kara Walker, an African American painter and filmmaker who doesn’t shy away from exploring race, gender, and violence; get ready to duck. Currier’s portraits are a combination of acrylic paint and consumer waste—food wrappers, newspapers—collected in her travels to all corners of the world. The contrast between the painted likenesses and printed papers give Currier’s work, like her subjects, a combination of strength, seriousness, and beauty.—Lisa Van Sickle Evelyne Boren, Buddha Spirit, oil on board, 16 x 16"

Rural Narratives: Stephanie Hartshorn and Tamara Rymer Sorrel Sky Gallery 125 W Palace sorrelsky.com September 8–30 September 8, 5–7:30 pm Through the month of September, Sorrel Sky highlights the work of two women—Stephanie Hartshorn and Tamara Rymer. Hartshorn, an architect in a previous life, paints structures as an art form. Composed of rural and urban landscapes, her work captures the details of design, the lines, the curves, and the intersection between manmade and natural. “Each brushstroke takes on a form of its own,” Hartshorn notes, “and in the end, creates textures that explore and express an object or scene.” Her paintings also explore particular objects that capture her attention, “I enjoy the adventure of carving out these ideas on canvas.” Rymer began her artistic career at the age of 10, when the Texas Highway Department used one of her works in their ad campaign for clean highways. Since then, the self-taught artist moved into oils and watercolors, and usually paints scenes relating to the Western lifestyle—a “visual testimony of times gone by,” and a way to stay connected to the vast Southwest she calls home.—Amanda Jackson Evelyne Boren: New Works Acosta-Strong Fine Art, 640 Canyon, johnbstrong.com September 11–24, Reception September 15, 5–7 pm A native of Munich, Germany, Evelyne Boren has led a life filled with adventure and travel. While she was working as an underwater stunt double, she was inspired by the natural beauty of film locations, which led her to a career as a painter. She now splits her time between Santa Fe and Mexico, with frequent forays to Europe, the landscape continuing to influence her work. Boren’s September show includes 22 new paintings, both oil and watercolor on canvas. New for this year are paintings from her Buddha-inspired series, her landscapes and still lifes containing the figure of the Buddha. Many other paintings are of the vividly colored landscapes for which Boren is best known.—LVS

Robert Striffolino, Garden Reflections #3, oil on canvas, 56 x 56"
Gardenscapes and Other Views The Globe Gallery globefineart.com September 15–October 16 Reception September 15, 5–7 pm Robert Striffolino has lived and painted in Santa Fe since 1978. Now represented by The Globe Gallery, he is showing a series of his paintings from his Garden series. Fascinated by the “organic, complex, and seemingly chaotic” shapes, colors, and patterns found in the botanical world, Striffolino takes what he finds and endeavors to turn the raw material into a painting. Striffolino’s artist’s statement expresses it thus: “Painting for me, as simply and succinctly as I can say, is a journey. I only want the materials of paint and surface as a means to discover deeper emotional and spiritual revelations about Life as I experience it.”—LVS September 7, 2017 NOW 13
