GHOST RANCH

2010 WelcOMe Dear Friends, Ghost Ranch has been operating as an education, conference and retreat center since Arthur and Phoebe Pack so graciously donated the property to the Presbyterian Church (USA) in 1955. We honor the Packs’ vision of conserving the land, the history and the cultures of the region and we honor each visitor’s quest for spiritual, physical and emotional health. As God’s creativity and love are boundless, we invite everyone to experience the unique landscape and heartscape of Ghost Ranch. Ghost Ranch acquired its name in the 1880’s through the antics of two well-known brothers in the area who hid stolen cattle in Box Canyon. They told their neighbors and any inquisitive passers-by that ghosts would bring harm to anyone who came on the property, as a way, of course, to prevent the discovery of their unsavory business deals. The name “Ghost Ranch” remains, long after the brothers’ secret was revealed, after the Abiquiu property changed hands to Carol Stanley and then to Arthur Pack, from the 1990 addition of Ghost Ranch Santa Fe near the historic district of the city, and now on to the year 2010. As true of people of different cultures with varying belief systems passing through northern New Mexico over many eras, we too, in our connectedness, have memories of joy and of hardship, enveloping love and times of aloneness, bursting creativity and moments of stillness. Today, the programs of Ghost Ranch provide mind, heart and soul-opening opportunities for people of all ages and interests. Make this journey for yourself, invite your families and your friends and embrace the experience we call Ghost Ranch. Blessings and Peace to all,

2010 YeS, MOre THan 300 cOUrSeS Relax. Paging through the 2010 edition of the Ghost Ranch Course Catalog, the scope of options may get a bit overwhelming. Silversmithing. Black & White Photography. Cross Cultural Ministries. Peace & Justice. Bluegrass Music. Dinosaur Quarries. The options are mind-boggling. Yet, at the core, weaving a thread of consistency through all these options is the essence of Ghost Ranch and its wide-open sky... the response to our age-old human need for expansion and transformation. Feeding the soul on so many levels, the courses offer opportunity for personal, spiritual and community development. There is one man who, over the last 17 years

Jim Baird in the sculpture garden at Ghost Ranch Santa Fe

of his life, is responsible for weaving the thread and drawing the connection of growth through these varied dimensions. Jim Baird, Program Director for Ghost Ranch since 1999, has wrestled the paradox between change and possibility. It is through his vision we continue the path of Earth-Honoring Faith, Family Week, Youth Programming, Casa del Sol, Opera, the multitude of Arts Programming... the list goes on. As Jim passes the baton at the end of 2009, we bow our heads in honor and heartfelt appreciation. We are proud of Ghost Ranch today. We thank Jim for his mastery in creating this colorful woven tapestry. As time marches on, the richness and color of our diverse fabric will evolve and you, our guests, lead us into the future. It is through your participation, your influence, your journey, that we grow and joyfully remain in God’s hands as the weave of creation continues at Ghost Ranch. Go ahead with glee. Choose a course and bring your inspiration to Ghost Ranch.

caMP claSSeS Beginning Bluegrass Guitar Students will learn to play the three chords that can get you through 90% of bluegrass songs, basic music theory that begins "playing by ear" and standard bluegrass rhythm guitar. Intermediate Bluegrass Guitar Students focus on lead playing, squaring up rhythm playing and transitions between chords. Licks and solo ideas are discussed for bluegrass keys other than "G."

Learn the basics of bluegrass on six instruments, ensemble playing, harmony singing, performance and songwriting. For three days, enjoy the magnificent scenery, learn your instrument, make friends and get a bluegrass band together and perform for the other guests. Sunday afternoon, May 23, will close our time together with an open air concert and jam session.

Mike will be joined by members of Finders and Youngberg to guide novice and intermediate players through standard instrument techniques, including rhythm and lead playing. Additional instruction will be available in singing, harmony singing and songwriting.

Harmony Vocals How does harmony work in bluegrass? Work on tenor and baritone vocal parts, learn tricks for arrangements of vocal parts and get lots of practice trying harmony. Ensemble & Performance How do bluegrass bands get away with using just one microphone? Where should I stand? What should I say in between songs? How loudly should I sing my harmony? These questions and more will be answered. Songwriting What are good topics for songs? Should you start with words or a melody? By workshopping with songwriters, students will get a good jump on writing a song during the camp.

Discerning the Signs of the Times G10PJ741 $350 + housing & meals Before May 15 Save $100 We will ask ethical and moral questions about critical issues confronting the world at the midterm of the Obama administration. The leaders for this 22nd annual forum are uniquely equipped by experience and expertise to initiate a lively discussion on issues of justice and peace in a globalizing economy, women’s rights in Islam and how the United States is viewed by the world. Riffat Hassan, Professor Emerita, recently retired as Professor of Humanities at the University of Louisville where she had taught since 1976. She is known worldwide as a spokesperson for progressive Islam and for her work to raise the status of Muslim women. From 2002-2009, she developed and directed two major Exchange Programs funded by the U.S. Department of State focusing on peace-building between South Asian Muslims and Americans. They were regarded by the State Department as a model for all future exchanges between Muslims and Americans.

In 1999, she founded the International Network for the Rights of Female Victims of Violence in Pakistan. She is currently involved with promoting leadership education and training for young Pakistanis so that they can create a progressive society which embodies the highest ethical principles of Islam. Her extensive involvement in interreligious dialogue provided for her “the community of faith I had sought all my life. In this community I have found others who like myself, are committed to creating a new world in which human beings will not brutalize or victimize one another in the name of God, but will affirm, through word and action, that as God is just and loving so human beings must treat each other with justice and love regardless of sex, creed or color.” Riffat will help us understand the fundamental teachings of Islam, particularly with reference to the Ethical Framework of the Qu’ran, Human Rights in Islam, Women in Islam, Perceptions of Islam versus its realities and significant issues in Contemporary Islam. Alan Heil, former Deputy Director of Voice of America, spent 36 years at the nation’s largest overseas publicly-funded broadcasting network. During that time he traveled to more than 40 countries and lived for some years in Beirut, Cairo and Athens. His book, Voice of America: A History, published in 2003, was described by Walter Cronkite as celebrating “this nation’s dedication to the practical application of its democratic foundation—our freedoms of speech and press.” VOA reaches 135 countries and broadcasts in 45 languages.

He was a member of Presbyterian peacemaking study missions to Bosnia and the Middle East and is an elder at Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, VA.

Among the books she has written are In Search of the Good Life: The Ethics of Globalization (winner of the Trinity Prize in 2003) and To Do Justice: A Guide for Progressive Christians, published in 2008.

She will also lead discussion on developing a solidarity economy. How does solidarity offer the possibility for shaping economic theory and economic institutions in ways that are more conducive to justice? Conveners: Dean Lewis, retired Ghost Ranch Program Director Barbara Howell, 22-year participant in “Discerning the Signs of the Times.”

Rebecca Todd Peters is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Religious Studies at Elon University in North Carolina. She is active in the ecumenical movement and currently serves on the World Council of Churches Faith and Order Commission. “Toddie,” as she prefers to be called, received her PhD in Christian Ethics from Union Theological Seminary in New York and was a student of Beverly Harrison. She focuses primarily on environmental and economic justice concerns and describes her work as seeking “to promote peace and justice through addressing concrete structural injustices that contribute to exploitation, disease, hunger and conflict."

Alan’s topics will include discussions of Truth vs. Propaganda, A Journalist’s Perspective on Obama and the World at Mid-Term, and The Humanitarian Role of International Media. He will discuss the ethical issues confronting a U.S. governmentrun global network that aims for accuracy and programming content that is honest, fair, probing, objective and comprehensive. In assessing Obama’s success, he will provide a scorecard on the impact of Obama’s commitment to dialogue rather than confrontation, how we might build on the successes and continue to intensify real dialogue in a troubled world, and what the limits are of America’s ability to influence events. Finally, he will lift up global broadcasting’s role in spotlighting issues of poverty, illiteracy, disease and injustices in our world.

She will speak to developing a Social Ethic of Solidarity, discussing solidarity as a moral norm for personal and communal action which offers the possibility of new policy directions for the Obama administration. She will help us look beyond the financial crisis to rethinking the moral foundations of political economy. How can we move beyond thinking “How can we get out of this crisis?” toward thinking about alternative visions of economic arrangements?

Our number one priority of providing transformational experiences through a variety of program opportunities is the whole of many parts, each requiring attention and tender loving care. While Ghost Ranch is an education and retreat center of the Presbyterian Church (USA), we are financially self-supporting. As a non-profit organization, we rely on the help of donors who amaze us with their grace and generosity. With your help, not only can we meet the obligations of upkeep for our Abiquiu and Santa Fe locations, we can actually work to realize our vision of environmental sustainability, community outreach and expanded spiritual development. Become a supporter of Ghost Ranch and take part in something that is greater than all of us. Your donation will help us to: • Embrace the mission of spiritual development, creativity through the arts, education, social justice and dialogue • Reconnect with the local community for outreach, artisans and farming • Create action plans for operational improvement, based on guest and staff recommendations • Develop a new Covenant Agreement with the Presbyterian Church (USA), to reduce administrative costs and to increase efficiencies in operations • Improve the stewardship of resources through environmental and financial sustainability • Create a comprehensive database and communication system to improve the economies of our communication with friends of Ghost Ranch • Improve our hospitality... Part of every gift is allocated to the restoration and repair of Ranch facilities. MUSeUMS aT GHOST rancH The ruth Hall Museum of Paleontology

Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu is known worldwide among paleontologists as the location of the articulated fossils of the Coelophysis (SEE-Low-FY-sis), as well as having one of the richest quarries of the Triassic era, which began 220 million years ago. The museum is named for amateur paleontologist Ruth Hall, wife of first resident Ghost Ranch Director Jim Hall. Displays range from a complete Coelophysis cast skeleton to remains from great alligator-like reptiles. A technician is currently at work on a large block taken from the quarry on Ghost Ranch where Coelophysis was discovered in 1947. Visit the museum and watch fossil discovery right before your eyes.

Florence Hawley ellis Museum of anthropology The museum is named for the late Dr. Florence Hawley Ellis, long-time professor of anthropology at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Dr. Ellis initiated and led Ghost Ranch archaeology excavations from 1971 until 1990. Excavations continue on two sites located on Ghost Ranch property under the leadership of Cheryl Muceus, Curator of the Florence Hawley Ellis Museum of Anthropology and Director of the Ghost Ranch Museums. Annually, approximately 2,000-3,000 school children visit the museum on field trips and have the opportunity to learn about local cultures by participating in related educational activities such as traditional tinworking, sand painting and straw-inlay work, as well as the chance to hike to archaeological sites found on Ghost Ranch.

GHOST RANCH

2010 GeOrGia O’KeeFFe In 1934 Georgia O’Keeffe found Ghost Ranch. It was the start of a fifty year relationship between the lauded artist and the landscape she made famous. Although she never owned Ghost Ranch, she eventually purchased a small home from Arthur Pack and later a home in Abiquiu. Ghost Ranch gave her the freedom to paint what she saw and felt. Red and gray hills like those across from the roadside park south of the ranch headquarters were frequent subjects. Kitchen Mesa at the upper end of the valley is an example of the red and yellow cliffs she painted many times. Pedernal, the flat-topped mountain to the south, was probably her favorite subject. “It’s my private mountain,” she frequently said. “God told me if I painted it often enough I could have it.” And of course, the Ghost Ranch logo, used on everything from stationery to T-shirts, was adapted from an O’Keeffe skull drawing given to Arthur Pack in the 1930’s.

Georgia O’Keeffe and The Ghost ranch landscape Tour Tour the landscape of Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu and see with your own eyes the actual locations of O’Keeffe’s paintings…interwoven with stories of her exchanges with ranch staff. One hour tours are available mid-March to midNovember — Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The cost is $25.

m Call 877.804.4678 to make your reservation NOTE: The tour does not include a visit to the Georgia O’Keeffe home at Ghost Ranch. That house is on private property and is not open to the public.
