JANUARY GOING BIG! WITH BASKETS with Irene Smith $42/53, materials fee $25, equipment list supplied. Now that you’ve made a Market Basket, use your skills to make a BIG Market Basket, so you can tote a ton of produce in style. In this class, students will revisit the steps in making a basic market basket and will learn to add filling weavers for a sturdier base. Irene has been making baskets for 30 years and has worked in the repair and restoration of Indian baskets. Saturday, January 16; 10am to 4pm.
BEGINNING WEAVING WORKSHOP with Rohna York - $126/158, materials extra. For those just starting to weave or those who need a refresher course. Using cotton and other nonwool fibers, we will learn how to make a warp, warp the loom (including reading a draft), and do a series of basic weave patterns while creating a useful dishtowel. Rohna learned to weave at the Southwest School of Arts and Crafts in San Antonio, Texas. After moving to Santa Fe, she worked for a time at EVFAC. You will find her weaving “wearable art” and the occasional rug. She enjoys the more complex weave patterns. Friday through Sunday, January 22–24; 10am to 4pm. TRANSITIONAL QUILT MAKING with Terry Meyer $46/57, materials list supplied. Have you wanted to try something new and original but didn’t know where to start? This is a class in which you will play with rectangles and circles to create an original contemporary wall hanging. This class, which is for confident beginners as well as intermediate quilters, has few rules but is full of possibilities for additional experimentation. Owner of Wild Wind Quilting, Terry is passionate about quilting and, before moving to New Mexico, started a guild in New York State. Drop by EVFAC to see on display a sample of the style of beautiful quilted wall hanging the class will be creating. Saturday, January 23; 9:30am to 4:30pm.
INTRODUCTION TO CHIMAYO-STYLE WEAVING with Lisa Trujillo - $137/171, materials extra. Learn how to combine angles and forms to create this unique form of woven expression. To take this class you must be able to warp a loom by yourself prior to the class and control edges in weft-faced weave. Lisa’s work has received numerous awards at Spanish Market and is part of collections around the world. With her husband, Irvin, she owns Centinela Traditional Arts in Chimayo. Friday, Saturday & Sunday; January 29–31; 9:30am to 4:30pm.
FEBRUARY WEAVING POSSIBILITIES WITH 8-SHAFT STRAIGHT DRAW with Diane de Souza - $84/105, materials extra. Have you ever wondered why some weavers thread their loom with a straight draw (1 through “x,” where “x” is the number of shafts) and never change it? It’s because of the design possibilities with straight draw. This class will explore 8-shaft options and give the student the tools to continue exploration on their own. A portion of the class will be about designing in the weave draft. The remainder will be hands-on weaving of different options on looms threaded in a straight draw. Students need to be able to read a weaving draft and thread a loom. Diane does it all – dyeing, spinning, weaving, knitting, beading – and has been teaching at EVFAC for many years. Friday & Saturday, February 5–6; 9:30am to 4:00pm. BEGINNING CROCHET with Madeline Stark - $35/44, materials list supplied. Crochet is a wonderful free-form way to be creative. Once you have learned the basics, you can make scarves, hats, and handbags. In this class you will learn the basic crochet stitches: chain, slip stitch, and single, double, and triple crochet. Time allowing, we will begin a small project. Materials needed: one size G crochet hook and a skein of worsted weight yarn in a light color. Madeline loves to teach her crafts. It brings her joy to pass along an ancient craft that joins women together and develops their creativity. Saturday, February 6; 10am to 3:30pm. COLCHA EMBROIDERY with Beatrice Maestas Sandoval - $42/53, materials included. Learn how to use the colcha stitch that has been part of traditional embroidery in New Mexico since the Spanish Colonial era. Absorb the history of this art form as you create a colorful design. INTRODUCTION TO LACE KNITTING with Susan Pacheco - $84/105, materials extra or bring your own. Plan a weekend escape into the beauty of knitted lace with expert knitter Susan Pacheco. While lace knitting can be done on an elaborate scale, it is always based on the fundamental stitches of knitting, and even beginning-level patterns can yield impressive results. EVFAC will have on hand needles and several skeins of lace-weight wool hand-dyed in rich palettes by Pat Dozier. Or simply bring your own fingering- or lace-weight yarn and circular needles, size 2 to 6 and at least 20 inches long. Students should be able to cast on, cast off, work basic increases and decreases and be familiar with working from charts. This is not a beginning knitter’s class. In addition to being a professional number cruncher and avid lace knitter, Susan Pacheco supported herself for several years as a full-time weaver. Saturday & Sunday, March 20–21; 10am to 4:30pm.
BEGINNING SPINNING with Jen Fehlau - $84/105, materials fee $15. Turning fleece into yarn is a magical experience. For the absolute beginner it can seem a mystery they may never master.
