Summer highlights Summer HIGHLIGHTS Introduction to Game Programming With Alice (Ages 12 to 15) NEW! Only a basic familiarity with computers is needed for this class on game programming. Students will be introduced to programming in Alice, an interactive 3-D-programming environment from Carnegie Mellon University. Students will learn how to create animations and games using the latest version of the Alice software. The goal of Alice is to offer the best possible first exposure to programming for students by providing a more intuitive environment for teaching object-oriented programming. During this camp, students will learn common programming constructs, basic algorithm design and storyboarding of movies/games. BPI Building Analyst Training NEW! This five-day Building Performance Institute (BPI) Building Analyst Training course prepares participants to conduct a comprehensive inspection and diagnostic analysis of a home’s energy consumption, paying special attention to health and safety issues that can arise during energy efficiency improvements. Topics include evaluating and documenting how the building as a whole performs, energy assessments, blower door testing, ventilation issues, combustion testing and how to develop a work scope for energy efficiency improvements. The written exam and field testing are included although a separate two-hour field test needs to be scheduled with the instructor. Successful completion of the class along with passing the written and field test provides certification by BPI as a BPI Certified Building Analyst. This course is for HVAC, electrical and general contractors, remodelers, installation and weatherization crews, inspectors, auditors and designers. Fashion Design Camp (Ages 13 to 17) NEW! Move over Project Runway. One out of five teens wants to be a fashion designer, but how do you get started? This class is a good way to learn about the fashion industry, learn to sketch clothing design and sew a simple garment. Ezra Estes teaches fashion design at SFCC and has been a semi-finalist for Project Runway tryouts. During this weekend field trip in Dixon, NM, participants will learn the principles and practices of designing and constructing an energy efficient, “tight envelope” foundation. Students will learn basic building science principles related to foundations, i.e. heat transfer, capture and storage, solar charged thermal mass, thermal bridging, radon mitigation and insulation and material selection.This class will take place at the home of Green Design Builder Rob Stout. The class will work on the construction of the foundation for an aquaponic fish and vegetable growing facility. Continuing Education art classes are designed for creative people of all levels. Whether you are a beginning or more advanced artist, Continuing Education has a class for you. Some of the classes include all of the supplies; others require you to purchase materials. All supply lists are available online. Beginning Drawing Explore drawing in a supportive environment where creativity is encouraged. You’ll learn basic skills for drawing from life, incorporating both traditional and contemporary methods. Several approaches to drawing will be covered which include using pencil, conte crayon and colored pencils. Demonstrations, art history and critiques enhance the work done in class. John St. Peter has a Master of Fine Arts degree. Experiments in Drawing New! In this mixed-media class, students explore twodimensional expression. Students use a variety of drawing and collage exercises. Line quality, layering, mood and collage are explored, while experimenting with representational and abstract drawing. This class is fun-filled, uses a variety of drawing tools and leads students to new confidence in their drawing skills. Edie Tsong is an accomplished artist based in Santa Fe. Kevin is always well prepared. Life-Drawing Studio This class is for those with some nude-figure drawing experience who are ready to move to the next level. After a series of brief warm-up gestures, the model maintains one long pose for the duration of the session, giving you time to develop your drawings and focus on aspects of the figure that give you trouble. Short slide presentations are part of the course. Personalized critiques focus on accuracy of gesture, proportion and artistic anatomy. Fee $145 Wednesday, 6:30 to 9 p.m., June 23, 6 wks., Kevin Gorges Course #AT314 01/CRN 10213 Pastels at Twilight Off Campus Pastel painting’s luminous color, combined with the immediacy of drawing techniques, make this the perfect medium to capture Santa Fe sunsets. Classes are held outdoors; the first two hours of each class focus on mastering pastel techniques and composition. The last hour of class, as the light fades, is all color, and the focus is on simplifying and loosening up. Good drawing skills and prior experience are recommended. Each participant’s individual way of seeing and learning is supported. The course includes demonstrations and critiques. Jane Shoenfeld has a Master of Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute. Personal enrichment Canyon Colors: The Pastel Landscape at Ghost Ranch Off Campus Join master pastelist Jane Shoenfeld on an excursion to Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu. Friday evening, the class will meet in the college studios, where the instructor will teach you how to create brilliant color with pastel underpainting techniques. On Saturday, the class will meet in Abiquiu, where Georgia O’Keeffe painted for years. You will create expressive pastel paintings of these remarkable canyons and mesas. Jane Shoenfeld has been teaching pastel landscape painting at Ghost Ranch for 11 years. Her work is exhibited in New Mexico at the Nightingale Wilder Gallery in Taos and has been published in American Artist Magazine. Fee $79 Friday, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., July 30 and Saturday, 9:45 a.m. to 5 p.m., 2 days, Jane Shoenfeld Course #AT317 01/CRN 10232 Drawing Portraits How we see each other can be reflected in the way we draw each other. The study of faces is infinitely engaging and is a great starting point for drawing. In this class, we do exercises to facilitate observation and learn simple techniques that simplify portraiture. By looking at examples from a variety of artists, students learn different methods and techniques of rendering the face. No drawing experience is needed for this relaxed and fun class. Edie Tsong is an installation artist with a Master of Fine Arts degree from Louisiana State University. Fee $119 Monday, 6 to 8:30 p.m., June 7, 5 wks., Edith Tsong Course #AT318 01/CRN 10290 Beginning Painting – Acrylic This course is for beginning artists interested in working with acrylic paints and mediums. Experienced artists interested in adding acrylic to their repertoire of major media will also find this course useful. Structured assignments and demonstrations will help you to explore the use of liquid mediums, solid gels and opaque pastes. Color mixing, composition and surface preparation will be covered. No experience is required. An art supply list is available upon request. Jakki Kouffman has been an acrylic specialist for more than 20 years.
Intermediate Painting This course is for intermediate/advanced artists interested in pursuing a series of paintings, using acrylic, pastel, oil (including water-soluble) or mixed media. Classroom work will emphasize group critiques to advance each student’s project. Participants may paint during the discussion period. All painting styles and approaches are welcome. Some experience with drawing and color is recommended. Jakki Kouffman has shown her work and taught painting around the country for more than 20 years. You’ll focus on painting in oils with the intention toward an abstract image. The second half of the course will focus on finding your voice through abstraction. Painting experience is recommended but not mandatory. Design Your Paintings With Photoshop NEW!
Watercolor is a very spontaneous and luminous medium. This painting class introduces students to the fundamentals of making beautiful watercolors. Learn the basics required to create easy and fun effects and explore individual, personal expression. All the beginning techniques of painting and tool usage are covered, as well as how to get started, execute and finish paintings in no time. Have lots of fun with watercolors while learning a new medium. Christy Henspetter is an accomplished artist and teacher in Santa Fe.
Use your personal computer to create preliminary designs and compositions for your fine art and commercial illustration. Using photo software, learn design strategies to manipulate and assemble pieces of your images and quickly explore compositional alternatives that are too time consuming to do by hand. See how to add color quickly to scanned “value sketches” and recolor old “color studies” for many additional design possibilities. A working knowledge of Windows or Mac operating systems is needed. Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Learn the art of beautiful writing using the simplest of tools, a chisel-pointed pen nib and ink. In this class, you will learn the lower and upper case letterforms of Italic writing. This hands-on course allows students to explore pen, ink and paper while practicing techniques. Make a Pattern From a Garment
This course focuses on working with clay on the potter’s wheel with special attention to design, functionality and finish. Make bowls, mugs, vases, pitchers, bottles, plates and jars of stoneware clay. Works will be trimmed, finished, bisque fired and then glazed and fired for completion. Frank Willett is a professional potter with approximately 50 years of experience and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the California State University at Los Angeles. There is no class on July 3.
Is your favorite garment worn out? Have you found the perfect outfit and wish you had another just like it? Come learn how to make a paper pattern from your favorite clothing without taking it apart. This course demonstrates tools and techniques of beginning pattern making. Basic sewing knowledge is required. Elizabeth Harris has been sewing for 25 years. During the past eight years, she has been teaching at SFCC and operating her own custom-sewing business.

Stained-Glass
Silver Jewelry Using Metal Clay
Bring the warmth and beauty of a stained-glass window into your home with a project you will complete in seven weeks. Learn all the basic skills in this hands-on class that demystifies the art of cutting glass. This course will focus on the design and construction of stained glass using the leaded method. Simple methods of glass cutting and construction will be explained while you complete your project. Students will be expected to purchase their own materials. There is no class on July 5.
Create fine silver jewelry using Art Clay. Silver metal clay is an exciting material consisting of silver particles in a nontoxic, organic binder and water. It looks, feels and acts just like clay. When heated, the binder and water burn away to leave 99-percent pure silver. Students will have the opportunity to practice firing with a small, inexpensive butane torch, an easy process that takes just minutes. Experienced artists will find this material fascinating, but no previous art experience or skills are needed. Leave class with finished pieces of original jewelry. You’ll learn all the basics in one day, and you’ll be prepared to set up your own “kitchen-table” studio. Personal enrichment Tamales: Fun and Easy In Santa Fe, each generation teaches the next how to make tamales. These corn husk wrapped treats can be filled with meat, cheese or vegetarian. Making tamales takes time and care in the kitchen and is terrific for getting families together. Here’s a new twist on potstickers -- vegetarian potstickers! Potstickers are a favorite for almost everyone. And yet, potstickers are a tasty Asian appetizer that you can easily make yourself. Students will participate in making a basic vegetarian potsticker step by step. Different recipe options will also be explored. This class culminates in tasting the bounty after it has been cooked. Writing short stories is a fun, creative way to express yourself. This introduction to belly dance is perfect for women of all ages. Each class will begin with warm-up and stretching exercises. You can push your personal limits in higher wind conditions or simply relax and cruise on light breezes. It is a sport that will offer you a lifetime of learning, personal challenge, camaraderie and fun. Windsurfers come in all shapes, sizes and ages, from 8 to 80+. You will learn basic water safety related to windsurfing along with beginning windsurfing techniques and terminology such as parts of the windsurfing rig, basic rigging and turning of gear, mounting the windsurf board, up-hauling the sail and more. Concealed Carry Training
Experts agree that the single most important step toward ensuring your personal safety is making the conscious decision to refuse to be a victim. The Refuse to be a Victim (R) seminar teaches easy-to-understand methods you can use to increase awareness and prevent criminal confrontation. This course will cover home safety, how to secure doors and windows, lighting, safety in your car, preventing road rage, safety in hotels and the psychology of predators. In just four hours you will get the tools you need to develop your own personal protection strategy and take a pro-active role in your personal safety. New Mexico allows residents to carry a concealed handgun with a state license. Applicants must be United States citizens, 21 or older, complete 15 hours of training and demonstrate the knowledge and skills required by law. Using NRA materials, certified instructors cover selection, ownership and operation of revolvers and semi-automatic pistols, safe gun handling and key elements of accurate pistol shooting. Serious attention is given to legal issues including a guest speaker from law enforcement. The fee includes two handbooks and additional materials but not ammunition. The tools of sky watching have changed over time. A stick poked into the ground to track the sun’s shifting shadows, a rock placed to mark a point in the sky-these have given way to radio telescope arrays and satellites. But look closely at these images, and you’ll see that the old saying is true: The more things change, the more they remain the same.
The Maya, one of the most amazing cultures of the New World, inhabited a region encompassing today’s Guatemala, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador, and parts of southern Mexico. The Maya charted the heavens and mastered a system of calendars and mathematics that remains relevant today. Once almost lost, now recovered in a special presentation in the planetarium. Class FEES Continuing Education classes are self-sustaining, and class fees must cover all program expenses. Fees are based on an estimated minimum number of students. Class fees are subject to change without notice. Please check the Web site for current information and review the refund policy before registering. SFCC User name and password SFCC assigns each student a user name. You can get your user name by going to www.sfcc.edu and clicking on the link to JACK. Once there, follow the instructions to find your user name and password. REFUND POLICY Class fees are automatically refunded in full when: • the class or workshop is full. • the activity is canceled. • SFCC rejects the enrollment application. If you drop a class, your class fee is automatically refunded based on the following: Classes of three or more sessions • If you drop a class before the second session, the full class fee will be refunded. • If you drop a class after the second session, no refund will be given. Classes of one or two sessions • If you drop a class at least one day before the starting date, the full class fee will be refunded. • If you drop a class less than one day before the starting date, no refund will be given. Some classes have special refund policies. This information is listed in the class description. Please allow three to five weeks for processing a refund. Class CHANGES AND CANCELLATIONS A class will be closed when it reaches maximum enrollment, so register early. Classes with insufficient enrollment will be canceled three business days prior to the starting date of the class, and those registered will be notified of the cancellation by phone. To make contacting you easier, please provide day and evening phone numbers with your registration. Refunds will be processed automatically for classes canceled by SFCC. SFCC reserves the right to cancel any class. Class locations, dates, times and instructors are subject to change without notice. Noncredit Registration Form All data are for office and statistical purposes only. Students are assigned a student identification number for record keeping. You may register for as many classes as you wish. Please read the information on Page 46 before registering. All registrations are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
