Sufi Saint Farid Sahib says, "The early morning meditation is just like the flowering of the plant. And the meditation which w e do i n the later part of the day is like getting the fruit." So those w h o remain awake i n the early morning hours and meditate, they get the grace of the Master.

In the Wrestling Ring of the Master Sant Ajaib Singh Ji of the society taunt him. They say that he has brought a bad name to his family, or that he has brought a bad name to his country. On the other hand, if we do the devotion of God, even we have to bear the criticism, the taunts and opposition of our family members in the beginning, but if we remain firm in this very Truth - the devotion of God - then one day the Sun of the Truth shines very high in the sky. Master Kirpal Singh Ji used to say that Truth is, after all, Truth, so if you remain firm in this Truth, if you remain firm and determined in doing the devotion of the Lord after getting all the criticism and taunts, still we will shine like the sun in the sky. History bears the witness of how the mullahs, the priests and the pundits, under the influence of their orthodox religions, how much they bothered the Saints and the Masters Who came in the past. They gave Them inhuman tortures, and they plundered Their homes, Their belongings. They were kicked out from the villages where They lived, They were given all sorts of inhuman torThis Satsang talk was given Septem- tures, and were not allowed to do ber 16, 1994, in Ahmedabad, India. the devotion of Lord at that time.

alutations unto the Feet of Supreme Father Lord Almighty Sawan and Kirpal, Who with an open heart gave us so many opportunities to sit in Their remembrance and allowed us to do Their devotion. They gave us the yearning, the courage, the strength and the enthusiasm to do Their devotion. The gift of devotion is the food for our soul, and They have given that to us. For many births, our soul did not get this food; and that is why she was not clean. When we get this gift of devotion from Them-just as when we give water to the dry farm and then it becomes green, in the same way, our soul had been [nearly] dead for so many births-and because we got this gift of devotion from Them, that is why our soul has come back to life; our soul has become green again. Guru Nanak Sahib said that if anyone is committing the sin, if he is stealing things, if he is doing the robbery, or if he is committing so many sins, no one becomes his companion. Not even his family members become his friends. The people

But history bears witness how, a long time after They left this world, now we people are covering the places where They lived with marble. We even go to the extent of putting gold on the houses or on the places where the Beloveds of God stayed during Their lifetime. Because They did the devotion of Lord Almighty, the administrators - the kings, emperors, and even the so-called orthodox religious people, - did not appreciate the Masters coming at that time. But because of the devotion which They did, They are still shining just like the sun and the moon in the sky, and They will always shine in this world, only because of Their devotion to the Lord. Last June after the tour, I showed Pappu and Gunnel so many places where those past Masters had lived. So I told them, "Dear sons, these are the places where the orthodox people, the people of the society, the religious people, had not allowed the Masters to stay; and they had not let Them do Their meditation of Naam and preach the Naam. They gave Them a lot of torture; they bothered Them a lot. And they even kicked Them out, even though these places belonged to Them. But still They were not allowed to remain there peacefully. And now, after such a long time, you see how we are respecting these places. We are putting all the valuable marble stone there; and we are also putting the

gold on these buildings. So the meaning of saying this is that the administrators, the kings, or the emperors only rule over the bodies of the people, whereas the Saints and the Masters rule over the hearts of the people. And even after They leave this world, a long time after They leave this world, still They always remain in the hearts of the people. We remember the Past Masters; They always rule over our hearts because of the devotion of God which They did at that time. The devotion of Almighty God which They had done made Them shine in the sky of this world, just as the sun and moons are shining, and They will always remain here. Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj said, "Those who have connected their attention with God Almighty always remain connected with Him. And even if no one knows Them in this world in Their lifetime, still that unerasable sign of the devotion of the Lord, which is printed on Their heart, is such that They become manifested, They become known to the people even if They have left this world - even if They have left the body." The historians write their stories about the kings and emperors. They sing their praises because they get name and fame and maybe some wealth and riches from them. But they always avoid writing about the Saints and the Mahatmas. Mirabai was born in a royal famSANT BANI

ily, and she had the privilege of all the royal facilities. And when she grew up. she married a prince, the son of a king. And she was going to become the empress of that kingdom. The historians or the writers of that time have written a lot in the praise and glory of the kings and emperors of that time; but they have not written even one word in favor of Mirabai, because at that time, Mirabai used to do the devotion of God. And since she was opposed a lot, even by her own family members, they used to say, "Mirabai has brought a bad name to the family." So that is why the historians have not written even a word in praise of Mirabai. Today, 400 or 450 years after Mirabai came in this world, now October I994

everywhere they sing with devotion the bhajans written by Mirabai. The Saints also talk about Mirabai; They quote from her writings. And many religious people, many followers of different religions also appreciate and praise Mirabai. Mirabai says, "People think that if you have sons and grandsons, only then your name will remain immortal in this world." Or some people say that if they have more disciples, only then will they be remembered in the world, only then will their name be remembered in the world. But Mirabai says, "Only he who does the meditation of Naam, he who goes within and mixes himself with the Naam, he who becomes the Form of the Naam and mingles in the Naam, only his name will remain forever

in this world." In one of her couplets, Mirabai has written, "I have neither given birth to a son, nor have I made any disciples; but the time will come when people will remember Mira." I often say that, even if you do the devotion sitting under the earth, still it will get manifested in the sky. It will get manifested in the home of the Lord. But the thing is that one must have done the devotion. Saints do not do the preaching just to become famous in this world. They do the preaching only to make us, the forgetful souls, realize that we have to return to our Home and we have to do our devotion. It is not that They go all over and They do the preaching only because They want to become famous. Because They know that They will be remembered not because of the preaching but only because of the devotion of God. You know that we remember, or we know the history of only four thousand or five thousand years what happened four thousand or five thousand years ago. We remember that such-and-such king was there or such-and-such queen was there. But what do we know about the kings and the emperors or the other people who were before that time? So, when this world is not going to remain here all the time, how can we expect that our name will remain in this world? Guru Nanak Sahib says that either the Naam will remain in this world or One Who has 6

done the meditation of the Naam will remain. Or God Almighty Himself will remain. So that is why Nanak says, "Always sing the glory of God Almighty and meditate on the Naam." The coming of the Saints in this world is to wake us up. They tell us, "You have a very long journey to do, and you have very little time. A traveler should always be aware of the means he has to do his journey, and his attention should always be towards his goal." The mind and the sense organs, which are created as the obstacles in our path to meet God, have been created in the Will of God, just to see, "who, despite all this opposition, comes and meets me." Many dear ones ask, "Why did God Almighty create Kal? Why did He create the mind and the organs of senses? Because they are so forceful, so dangerous." Master Sawan Singh Ji used to reply to this question in this way. He used to say, "Why don't you go inside and ask this question to God Almighty yourself?" I was in the army, and I got the opportunity to go fight in the war because of the army. And whatever I experienced there - I often quote from the stories or the incidents of army life. I always give the examples and the parables of that time, because they are in accordance with the teachings of Sant Mat. If a general asks, "Why are there SANT BANI

so many forces in my opposition? Why do they have so many weapons and armor and all those things? How am I going to combat them; how am I going to defeat them?" If he asks all these questions, he can never win the battle. Instead of asking all those questions, first of all, he should know about his means, about his people. He should be confident in the army he has. Then he should know what is the route, what way he will be taking, and how he will cross over all the valleys and the difficult places where he has to travel. Also he should have confidence; he should have the determination to fight and win the battle; only then can he do that. In the same way, in Sant Mat also, first of all we should know about the means which we have and through which we can fight and win this battle. And then we should have confidence, because a coward can never achieve any success. Only a strong-hearted person can achieve success. In Sant Mat also, a coward cannot achieve success. You have to have a heart made of iron; you have to be a strong-hearted person. And then you should have faith in the Master. You should have confidence in yourself that you will easily go and fight and you will easily go and defeat all the forces which are in your way. Those who go within and concentrate at the Eye Center and become still there even for a moment, October 1994

they see how the Satguru makes us come into this battlefield. Just as a wrestler is promoted to go in the wrestling ring, in the same way, the Master also promotes us -He brings us into the wrestling ring. And He Himself puts His hand on our back and encourages us to win the battle. Guru Nanak Sahib depicts that event. He says, "I am the wrestler of my Master, and I have all His support and His grace. He has given me support with His hand on my back. There are five enemies with whom I have to fight, but I have with me at my back, my Master." If the disciple has faith, and if he stands in front of his five enemies with firm determination, and if his faith does not shake, then he easily becomes successful. The disciple should have confidence, he should have faith that he is the disciple of such a Master Who has controlled His mind, Who has killed all those forces. And with His grace, he will also be able to kill those forces; he will also be able to control his mind's forces. So Guru Sahib says, "He Who has killed His ego, He Who has controlled His mind, I am His disciple. With His grace, I will also do the same." If you have the strength of the Master in your heart, in your mind, then no one can defeat you. He who keeps the Master in him, he who goes along, taking the Master with him, there is no force up to Triloki 7

- in

these three worlds - who can do any harm to such a person. Often I say that it is worse to surrender than to be defeated. Those who go within, they are the dear ones with firm determination. In your group itself, I am very pleased that there are many dear ones who went very high in meditation. But there are those dear ones also who are still thinking about going in the within. In the army once, they had a wrestling match. There were two people wrestling. And one of them came on the top. The other person who was not on the top said, "Let me come on the top, and then I will see [how I can hold] you." So the person who had almost won that match, even though he was a strong young man of 21 or 22 years old, and even though he was on the top, he started weeping and worrying, "What will happen if this guy will come on top of me?" So our [commander] said, "Why are you worried? You just don't let him come on the top, and you have won the wrestling match." So this is our condition. Before going in the within, and even before fighting with lust, anger and all the other passions, we are worried about what will happen if they come and bother us. We should also become like that wrestler. As our officer used to say, "We should not let them come and dominate over us. They will bother us only when we let them dominate us." 8

I often give you the example of Pappu. Once, when we were going for the first tour, and when we had to go to get the vaccination, Pappu saw somebody else getting vaccinated, and at once he turned pale. His father was there and he said, "Why are you turning pale? You are the son of an army man." And I was also there, so I said, "And you are going with an army man!" So you see that he was just watching another person getting that shot, and his face turned pale. The blood which was red had all become yellow. [Sant Ji and audience laugh.] Later, when we got on the plane, Pappu thought, "He is a farmer and He has never been on a plane." So he was giving me all the instructions - how to sit on the seat, how to push back the seat, and how to fasten the seatbelt. He was telling me all those things and, in fact, he himself was worried, he was scared. So I said, "Pappu, maybe you are afraid!" And he said that yes, he was! [much laughter throughout the story] I had been in the army, and I had flown many times when I was in the army. We even did the parachuting. So I told Pappu, "Dear son, I have gone through all these things so many times." So what I mean to say is that if you want to, you can become successful in Sant Mat, in this Path, in the meditation, [but] only if you will make your heart strong like iron. I have often told you about SANT BANI

myself, that during the World War, when Hitler was advancing and he was routing everyone, even Nature was helping him. At that time, the [British] were recruiting people into the army. People preferred to go into prison for thirty years, but they did not want to join the army because they knew that if they would join the army and go into battle, in the war, they would be finished. I was recruited in the boys' company before that time, since I was younger than 18 years. And, even though it was not my turn to go to that war, but still, I had happily proposed my name to go fight in the war. The officers over there looked at me because I was still a very young boy. And they were also surprised - they were also very impressed by my courage. And often I have said that at that time I had so much enthusiasm, I was not afraid of death. And I was prepared to face any challenge, anything. But when God Almighty Kirpal showered His Grace upon me, when He gave me the Initiation, and when He Himself made that underground room for me and told me to sit for meditation-at that time, the mind created so many things that he intimidated me and made it very difficult for me to sit in the meditation. I am not saying this thing to intimidate you; but many times when I would try to sit in the meditation, the mind would come in front of me in the form of a tiger, and he would October 1994

frighten me, and he would not let me sit in the meditation. Master Sawan Singh Ji used to say that, coming in the enthusiasm, the mind would stand in front of the cannon prepared to die; but if you tell him to do the meditation, then he would run away just like a goat. Why, in the beginning, does the mind not let us come to the Satsang? The only reason for that is that the mind does not want to be repressed, because he knows that if he will go to the Satsang, he will have to give up the sweet and sour taste of this world. He will have to be in the discipline; he will have to do the meditation. So that is why he doesn't want to do that; he wants to remain free as has been his habit. That is why he creates all the obstacles in our coming to the Satsang, and he doesn't let us come to the Satsang. But when, somehow, we bring our mind to the Satsang, through the darshan of the Masters, through Their beautiful words, and through Their grace, some karmas are paid off. And then, gradually, if we go on bringing our mind into the Satsang, and gradually, when he goes on getting the taste of the Satsang; then, once you have tasted the elixir of the Naam and the Satsang, then it becomes very difficult for you to give up the taste of the Satsang and the Naam. All of us who are sitting here have our own business or our own work - somebody is a farmer, somebody

gave us so much love, and They gave us the opportunity to sit in Their remembrance for so many days. And, individually, to all the dear ones, I have given this message of the Master because He has given me this duty. He has asked me to remind the dear ones of His message: that you have to keep the diary, you have to attend the Satsang. Giving up hundreds of important works, you must attend the Satsang. And you should do your Bhajan and Simran regularly. You should give up thousands of works to sit for meditation. Because this is the only best means for receiving the grace of the Master. And if you will do these practices, if you will do all these things, then it will help you a lot to go in the within. On the very first tour I said this. I bring this up because yesterday a dear one asked me this question in the darshan. It was asked in a different way; it was of a different nature. But I just wanted to tell you that on my very first tour I told the dear ones to remove the anxiety or the confusion of those who at that time thought that, since I do not speak your language, it would be difficult for them to communicate with me. So I had told them that, for a Perfect Master, it is a very small thing to be able to speak in the language of the disciples. Those who do the meditation, and those who acquire the supernatural powers, even of the lower planes, even they can speak all October 1994

the languages. The Masters have all the supernatural powers, but They are not allowed, and They do not use, those supernatural powers. So even though They have the capability of doing that, still They will not perform such miracles, They will never do that. Because this is the [limitation only] of this plane. They always remain in the Will of God. I have told the dear ones, "Outwardly I do not know your language. But I am assuring you that the place where the Shabd has to talk to the soul, Pappu will not be needed there to do the translation." And the dear ones over the years have all given their testimony. They write to me, they tell me how, when they sit in the meditation, they have the darshans of the Masters and how I talk to them - the Master talks to them in their own language. The people who speak English write to me and they tell me how I was talking English to them. And the people who speak Spanish and the other languages say the same thing. Many dear ones even say, "All day long, you go on talking to us in our own language." So, as I said on the very first tour, no one should remain in this illusion that I cannot do this. Because this is a thing which one can acquire. If he goes even to the lower planes, even if he does a little bit of meditation, he can receive the supernatural powers with which he can do that. But this is not in accordance

with the Will of God Almighty so that is why it is not happening. But, as I had assured, internally, there will be no problem. People will have the opportunity to talk to the Master in their own language, and everybody has said this so far. So yesterday, when that dear one came to see me in the darshan, he said, "Master, I see Master Sawan Singh and Master Kirpal Singh and you over there, but you do not have glasses on at that time." So what I mean to say is, "Dear one, the glasses are of this material plane . . . [Lots of laughter] The Radiant Form of the Master does not need any glasses! He does not need any airplanes. He does not need any other means of communication because He is there in His Radiant Form. Or maybe it is possible that at that time, I had forgotten to wear the glasses!" [Much laughter!] So what I mean to say is that the Radiant Form of the Master does not depend on these worldly things, these outer things and techniques. In the beginning [the worldlywise people] had frightened me. Because you know that I live in the village, and the villagers are very simple, common people, very innocent. So they had warned me about the Westerners. Also, at that time, as you know, I had gone out into the world, taking with me a very young boy who was not very learned. And they had told me, "First of all, you have with you a boy who is not very

learned, and you are going to be with the Westerners. Even God is afraid of the Westerners, because if they get the opportunity, they will sell you off!" Now, when those people who told me those things in the beginning, when they come and meet me I tell them, "You see they have not sold me off." I am very glad that they have kept me in their hearts, they have kept me in their homes, and they love me. And you know that you don't sell off the things which you love. So I'm very pleased that the dear ones have kept me in their homes, they have kept me in their hearts, and they have not sold me off! All the wealth of this world is subject to destruction. It all is going to be destroyed. If someone suggests to me that you sell off your Master, how can you sell that thing which you cannot get by paying any price? Kabir Sahib has said, "0 Lord, when You come into my eyes, I will close my eyes. Neither will I look at anything else, nor will I allow you to look at anyone else." When the dear one gets such a vision of the Master, he digests that Form of the Master within him. He captures that vision, that darshan of the Master within him in such a way that he absorbs himself in that and he doesn't look at any other thing. I have preserved even the dust of the feet of my Beloved Master. And you can imagine - how can a dev-

otee who has preserved the dust of the feet of the Master, how can he sell his Master? I cannot forget those scenes when He used to take the walks, and how I would look at Him like the moon bird looks at the moon, and how He would pat my back. Whenever I tried to bow down to Him and touch His feet, He never let me do that, and He never let me sit in front of Him. How can I forget all those scenes? Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj said, "May I always behold this enchanting, beautiful, attractive form of my Beloved, because when I look at Him, when I go to see Him, only then do I remain sane; otherwise I go insane." The meaning of my telling you the stories of the love of my Master is to make you understand that the Master will open His door only when the disciple will have so much love, so much yearning for his Master. So you know that this program is now coming to an end, and I hope that you will maintain all the love which you have received here during these last eight days. You can maintain it only by doing your meditations. Because this progress, this love, can be maintained only by doing the regular meditations. And you know that you can get the encouragement and inspiration to do the meditation only if you attend Satsang. So I hope that you will keep attending the Satsangs, and you will keep doing your Bhajan and Simran October 1994

so that you may maintain and progress even more in meditation. One dear one from the West came to Rajasthan and he said that he had nothing with him. He made the gesture saying that he was empty-handed, he didn't have anything in his bag. Then he begged me to give him the spiritual wealth for six months' time, and then he would come back after six months. So don't do like that. Whatever you have been given over here--even if it is very littlestill maintain it, preserve it, and increase it. Because your cup will get filled; by adding drop to drop, it will be filled. So whatever little or more you have been given here, maintain it, preserve it, and increase it with the grace of the Master. I also hope that whatever worldly responsibilities you have gotten due to your own karmas, you will attend to those, and while attending to those, that you will do your spiritual practices as well. And the lesson of love which the Masters teach us, you will remember that, as Christ had said, "You should love others in the same way as you expect them to love you." From you the fragrance of the Naam, the fragrance of the love should come out, and the people around you should become aware that you go to such a Master and you do the devotion of God. So you should make your life like that; you should be a good example for the other people.

Carrying the Basket of Grace Sant Ajaib Singh Ji their head but whatever practices they were doing, even though the name which they are repeating is just for the name sake, it is not the True Naam, but still they did not miss it, they maintained their regularity. We the satsangis are always told that we have to be regular in our meditations. We should never miss the meditation. Master Kirpal Singh Ji used to say that you should not feed your body until you have fed your soul with the food of meditation. Usually in the houses or around the houses there are small gardens and some trees and in the morning hours the birds come there. Very early in the morning they remember God Almighty in their own language. Farid Sahib says, "I sacrifice myself on those birds who live in the jungles, in the forest. They pick up the pebbles and the food from the wayside and they eat but not even for one moment do they forget God." They only get to eat the weeds and the stones and things like that because the real fruit is taken away by the owners of the field. If the birds try to eat the real fruit then the ownThis meditation talk was given in ers chase them away. But still the Ahmedabad, India, on September 16, birds express their gratitude to God 1994. Almighty in their own ways.

Salutations unto the Feet of Lords Sawan and Kirpal Who have given us the opportunity to do Their devotion; we the forgetful and the wandering ones, and He Who has given us the strength to do Their remembrance. I have always been telling you, whether you were sitting here in the meditation for the last eight days or back in your homes, I have always said, "Never understand meditation as a burden, always do it lovingly." When I was coming back from South Africa to Bombay at the airport I saw some dear ones from Arabia, some sheiks, and when the time came for offering their prayers, the namaz, not all of them, but some of them, those who had maintained the regularity in performing the namaz, offering the prayers, even though the airport was very crowded but still at that time they spread out their mat, they spread out their piece of cloth and they started offering their prayers. Now they did not have the Grace of the Living Master. They don't have the Perfect Masters over

We human beings try to eat the any customer of yours I would sell best food. We try to sleep on the you off. People may be selling you best beds. But do we have at least for ten kilos but I will sell you withthat much yearning, which the birds out asking for anything; I will just have, to get up early in the morning sell you free of charge. Go to those and connect ourselves with Him? people who do not do the devotion. Who gets connected with God What do you have to do in the homes Almighty? Only one who has done of the devotees." When Guru Arjan Dev Ji fell in His devotion and has become His own form. Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maha- love with His Master Guru Ramdas; raj says, "In the early morning hours when He got in love with the Naam, before the sun rises and all the what did He tell sleep? He said, "0 birds get up, the Saints have assumed sleep, you go on decreasing," and this surprising form." "They connect He said to the night, "0 night you themselves with Lord Almighty," go on increasing. May the night be of six months so that I may always says Nanak. Mirabai fell in love with the remain connected to my beloved." Master Kirpal used to say that Naam. She fell in love with Her Master and said, "0 sleep, if I may find those who have made their nights

they have made everything. And I often say dear ones, that gold can be obtained only by digging in the mine. If you want to have the valuable pearl you have dive deep into the ocean. Not even a mother can give birth to a child without enduring the pain. So the obstacle which is in the way of the meditator is that of sleep and laziness. That is why Sant Mat demands the hard work. The wealth which we have earned ouselves is our very own. If the student will pay attention to the talks or to the things of the teacher only then will that teacher put all his attention on that student. In the same way, the Master will shower grace upon us only if we will do our part. Everyday the Saints tell us not to get attached to the feet because whatever They have, whatever there is, it is in the forehead and in the eyes of the Sadhu. The hypocrites have made us have the habit of touching the feet of the Masters. Once a dear one went to Master Sawan Singh and he fell at the feet of Master Sawan Singh. He did not want to get away from the feet of Master Sawan Singh. Master Sawan Singh rebuked him. The other dear one who was there said, "Master he has so much yearning for you and it is not in his control so shower grace on him." So Master Sawan Singh Ji said, "Every morning at 3:00 a.m. I go to every

person carrying the basket of grace. Rare are the ones, fortunate are the ones, who at that time wake up and get the grace." Sufi Saint Farid Sahib says, "The early morning meditation is just like the flowering of the plant. And the meditation which we do in the later part of the day is like getting the fruit." So those who remain awake in the early morning hours and meditate they get the grace of the Master. Those who sleep during that time they remain without the grace. In the early morning hours the Master is distributing the musk, the grace to everyone. Those who get up at that time they receive it from the Master. Some dear ones get up but if they fall asleep once again they are deprived of that grace. So that is why he says that in the early morning hours it is like the flowering of the plant and then we get the fruit. Those who will remain awake they will get the grace from the Master. In the night the Master distributes the musk. One can not get it if he is asleep. One can get it only when he is awake and if it is written in his fate. So that is why all the satsangis should put the meditation as number one. Then as number two you should have sleep. And unless you have done the meditation in the early morning hours don't let the sleep bother you. So before starting the meditation remember the Holy Simran. Close your eyes and start the Simran. Master Is The Only One Who Saves Us BY SUSAN PEARSALL from a talk given September 25, 1994

T

his was a very personal trip for me, but I would like to share parts of it because the mind is such a problem for all of us. I really feel Sant Ji saved me from a very dangerous place. For the past two years I've had a lot of very intense and difficult karmas to pay. Within a week after coming back from Ahmedabad in 1992, I was diagnosed with recurring breast cancer. Sant Ji had given us a strong hint on that trip, and during the period of the two operations and afterward, my husband Bob and I felt the Master's grace in a very strong way. Three months later, my 94-yearold father passed away, and I was extremely attached to him. Because he was an older parent I was always worried that he would die. I know that sounds kind of funny, but I had a real strong attachment to him. Again during that period around my father's death I felt the Master's grace very strongly. I felt very close to Him. Two weeks later, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, and this was definitely feeling like too much for me. As the months went on I seemed to be losing my emotional balance and was having some serious men-

tal problems. So when we heard we could go to Ahmedabad in September, instead of joy I felt a sense of dread and fear. My mind had me strongly in its grips and it convinced me, on one level, that if I went to see the Master I would definitely have to pay more karmas, probably cancer, again. And in my state of mind I felt I couldn't bear one more thing. Another factor was that two people (and this is going to sound ridiculous too, but to me it was very real), two people besides myself on that first Ahmedabad trip had been diagnosed with cancer within six months of coming back and they both had since died. So that made me feel kind of uneasy. Basically I felt like running from the Master and the Path and my karmas. I had never experienced this in twenty-six years on the Path and it made me feel really lousy. Fear was definitely standing between me and the Master. It was very painful and also very humiliating. So that was the condition I was in when He dragged me to Him. Even in the London hotel I was very anxious and I was trying to figure out ways of being able to go back home. But in the morning things had SANT BANI

lifted somewhat and I was going. From that point on there was a dramatic change. I was feeling excited and even light-hearted which I hadn't experienced in a very long time. He really turned it on for me in Ahmedabad. It was like the old days in Rajasthan. I was so happy and so grateful and feeling so in tune. It seemed like a real miracle to me. To me He was more beautiful than I have ever seen Him. Every gesture, every tilt of the head was, in a cosmic sort of way, incredibly charming. I could understand the phrase "eat me and drink me." He seemed so gentle and so gracious and also full of the funniest stories. I've never seen Him tell so many funny stories. One of them was the story which we've heard before about the mahatma who came to give a Satsang in their area of Rajasthan. In India they have the habit of serving tea after the Satsang. The people in charge were going to give the tea to the sangat after the Satsang, and then they were going to invite the mahatma into a separate room and give him tea separately because he was sort of special. When he saw them serving the sangat first he started having a temper tantrum, and he did something like pour the tea on his head - he had a real fit. We've heard that story before, but at the end He added: Sukhpal, Gurmel's little daughter who lives at the October 1994

Ashram, every time I tell this story she gets up and says, "That's not our Baba, that's the other Baba." And He would laugh and He just kept telling funny, funny stories. Sometimes he laughed so hard He looked like He was going to fall over. His expressions of love when He would look at the man positioning the microphone were incredible. His loving glances at Gunnel, Pappu and each of us were so beautiful, it was almost hard to bear at times. Our interview was on the second day. I had decided I wasn't going to burden Him with all this stuff since I was feeling so good, so when we went in I sat as close to Him as I could. He welcomed us to India which He had never said before. (India was the word that He'd never said before.) He asked me about my health, as usual. And I answered that I didn't really know, which was odd for me to say, since every other time I had said it was better or something like that, which wasn't necessarily what I thought. He bent forward toward me, and tilted His head slightly. So He looked just like the picture of Master Kirpal, Lord of Compassion. He said in such a soft, loving way, "You know, I only wish you good health." My reaction was one of sadness. Next morning both Bob and I had the same revelation, that these were very important words. The Master is 19

the only one Who saves us. He doesn't give us the karmas; they are ours and we have to pay them. If anything, He softens the blow. He's the only one in the world Who can help, and I was running from Him. In my mind I had associated being with the Master with paying heavy karmas and it had tricked me into being afraid of Him. Also it was clear on a very deep level that He knows everything that is going on with us at all times. We went to France in June and 20

Bob and I have both said that somehow the things that He has said over and over again, like doing your meditation, and going to Satsang, how important Satsang is, somehow they're sinking in on a deeper level. We've heard "go to Satsang" for how many years but somehow they just feel like they're sinking in a little more. So He's put me back together and given me a lot of hope and confidence in Him, and I'm very, very grateful. Thank you. SANT BANI

To See My Children Meditating Sant Ajaib Singh Ji Beloved Sant Ji, when I do seva I become absorbed in the work and do not do much Simran. Also in spite of my trying to do seva with love, ego takes over. How can one do seva with the confidence in the work he has to do, without ego, according to Master's teachings?

F

irst of all I bow down at the Feet of Lord Almighty Sawan and Kirpal Who gave us this opportunity to sing Their glory and allowed us to sit in Their remembrance. Guru Nanak Sahib said, "First we need to get the permission from the Master before doing any work." He said, "Whatever we want to achieve, first of all we should seek His blessing, we should ask His permission, and only then that work becomes successfu1." In the morning meditation I said that God Almighty is great, like a mountain, but He is hidden behind a very thin straw of our ego and the illusion. Simran brings humility within us. Simran creates the enthusiasm in us

This question and answer talk was given in Ahmedabad, India, on September 12, 1994. October 1994

to do the seva; if we do the Simran, love for the Master will also be created within us. If you do not do the Simran, your mind is not going to sit there idle; he will create the illusions and deceptions within you. He will bring in the ego and then he will start bringing all these egoistic thoughts within you. He will expect that people will praise you when you are doing the seva and if people don't do that then you will think "what is the use of doing seva when it is not recognized, or when people are not praising me?" Then your mind will tell you not to do that seva. So if you will not do Simran you will not get humility and all these thoughts of the ego and all this deception of the mind will come within you. So the first thing which is taught in Sant Mat is humility. Unless you have humility you cannot get the grace of the Master. Master used to say, "The bowl which has the grace of humility will lower and will fill your cup only if your cup is empty. If your cup is already filled with all other things how will you get the grace of the Master?" Master Sawan Singh Ji used to say, "Many times our mind creates 21

this kind of deception-that outwardly he makes us have humility, but inwardly he craves name and fame. Outwardly he goes on telling people, 'I am doing nothing, it is all the Master who is doing it, Master is making me do all these things,' but inwardly he is always looking for name and fame and the praises of other people." So anyone who does this is deceiving the people and also he himself is in the deception. If we do the Simran then our mind cannot play such tricks on us. We can save ourselves from such deceptions of the mind only if we do the Simran. Whether one does seva with his body, with his mind, with his wealth, or the seva of the Surat Shabd yoga, all these sevas are equally important in their places. A satsangi should always remain involved in doing one or the other of these sevas. But along with doing one of these sevas a Satsangi should also do Bhajan and Simran because we can have humility and grace only if we do the Bhajan and Simran along with doing the seva. Meditation is very essential; it is the most important thing to do. This is a story from a very long time ago, before I had met the Master. There were about eleven people in our group and the other ten people were initiates of Baba Sawan Singh. I was the only one who did not have the Initiation, but we all had a very deep relationship and we

used to get together. Ever since I had had the darshan of Baba Sawan Singh I was very fond of Him so I would always be in the company of the people who were Initiated by Him. We all used to get together and do the Satsang. Once we collected some money, rented a hall, and invited one mahatma to come there and do the Satsang. That mahatma came there to do the Satsang and it so happened that every day he would eat good food and then sleep all the time and still he would say that he was the sevadar of the sangat and he had come there to do the seva. It so happened that he was invited by one family and we all went there with him. After the Satsang was over, the family who had invited him made some tea for all the sangat. They thought that first they would serve tea to the sangat and then they would take the mahatma to some other room, and maybe talk to him privately and serve him the tea there. So while the mahatma was still sitting there, in front of him, they started serving the tea to the sangat and that upset that mahatma very much. Sitting there he started changing his colors, he became very upset, very angry, thinking about why he was not served tea first and why the sangat was being served the tea first. The family members got worried but they didn't know what to do. After some time they requested that SANT BANI

mahatma to get up and come to the other room for tea but he wouldn't go there because he was very upset and angry. When he did not get up to go into the other room the family members were very worried. Usually householders are very worried and afraid of the saints and mahatmas, because if anything has gone wrong the mahatma will curse them. They didn't want him to curse them, so that is why they were afraid and in that state they brought the tea for him in front of the whole sangat. He was wearing a turban, and he was so angry at that time that he took off his turban and he said, "Now you put that tea on my head." So the meaning of saying this is that if that mahatma was also doing his Bhajan and Simran along with doing the seva of the Satsang or whatever he was doing he would not have acted like that and he would not have become the subject of mockery. Because when the people who were there saw him doing all that, many of the new people were not initiates and when they saw the mahatma doing that, they all laughed at him. And when he said, "Great is the Guru or the Mahatma of the Radha Soami faith," they all left without having any faith in the Path and in that mahatma. If he had been doing the Simran and Bhajan along with doing his seva don't you think he would not have become the subject of mockery for October 1994

the people? So that is why it is very important for us to do the Bhajan and Simran along with doing our seva. If we are not doing the meditation along with doing our seva then it is possible that we also may become like him, we also may become an issue of mockery for the other people. Sukhpal, who is Gurmel's daughter and most of you know her, heard this story from me many times in the Satsang, so whenever I tell this story again she at once says, "He is talking about some other Baba Ji; He is not talking about our Baba Ji." The meaning of saying this is: if you are called a sevadar and if you want to do the seva, you should also do the Bhajan and Simran along with the seva. Well I am very happy that now the dear ones in the west have changed and they arrange for people's food and drinks when someone visits them. But earlier, when I went to the west for the first tour and also on the second tour, I got the opportunity to visit some people's homes. Now, since the number of people in the sangat has grown, it is not at all possible for me to visit the homes of the people, but in the early two tours I did go to peoples' homes. Once we were invited by one dear one, so Pappu told me that there was no need to eat and drink anything before going there. He said, "When we go, they at least will serve us tea

24

SAM BANI

according to the traditions and customs of India." Because in India when you go to visit someone they offer you tea or whatever, according to the time of day. So he was expecting that the dear one would offer us tea at least, or something to eat. So we went there expecting that and without eating anything from our own place. When we got there we were greeted by that dear one, but he didn't offer us anything to eat or drink. He didn't even say, "Okay, come and sit in our home." Then we went back. Pappu said to me, "They didn't give us anything to eat or drink." I told him, "Maybe because we didn't go and sit in their home." So dear ones, if you are making the efforts to do the seva, at the same time also do the Simran, because when you are doing the seva with your hands, your mind is still empty. Always remember the words of Master Sawan Singh who used to say, "Hands at work and heart with the Beloved." We know that we don't need to ask Master for anything because He knows our needs and takes care of us and the ones we love. So is it wrong to keep asking Him to bless our families?

There is nothing wrong in asking for the blessings for the family, because there is humility in it, there is love in it. But when we are asking for the October 1994

worldly things, we do not know that in those things which we are asking from the Master whether it is good for us, whether we are going to gain anything, or whether we are going to lose. We always look at things according to the present circumstances and that is why we do not know what there is in the future for us. Many times it so happens that we sit in meditation with some desire, with some wish to be fulfilled, and with the grace of the Master our attention is connected within. If the Master manifests Himself over there and in love the disciple expresses his desire or wish to the Master, because of love for the disciple, at that time, the Master may grant him that wish or may promise to fulfill that desire, even though if the disciple were to receive that it would not be good for him. So later on that thing doesn't happen, because the Master knows what is good for him and what is bad for him, that is why sometimes even after saying yes to that disciple in the within, outwardly sometimes he has to withdraw that granting of the wish. In the heart of the Satguru there is a love for His children, for His disciples, a thousand times more than a worldly parent has for his children. If we are unhappy, if we are in a difficult situation, if we are suffering, it is all due to our own karmas. We are paying off our own karmas; it is nothing but the conse25

quences of the karmas which we have done earlier. And even in that, the Master is extending all feasible, all appropriate, help to us. In Bhagwat Puran there is a story of a goat who once went to a waterfall to drink the water but when she went there she was afraid when she heard the sound of the water falling and she went back, again she went there and again she came back. So she would always go there but when she would get near the waterfall she would always be afraid of the sound and she would go back without drinking the water. One elephant went there and he saw the goat doing that, always going near the waterfall and going back, so he asked her why she was doing that and she said, "I want to drink the water but I can't do it because of that noise and I am waiting when this noise, this sound will stop and then I will go and drink the water." So the elephant said, "You see, that sound is never going to stop. It will always be there, if you want to drink the water you will have to go there and drink the water in that sound.'' In the same way, the Masters lovingly tell us, "Dear ones you will have to live in the world like this." Outwardly also, through Their words the Masters explain to us and inside also, within us also They caution us, They give us the warnings through the inner hints and the inner experiences. They lovingly make us un26

derstand, "Dear ones, you are not made to pay off someone else's karmas, whatever karmas you are paying off they are your very own." So dear ones this noise or the sound of our good and bad karmas will always go on happening as long as our life is there. As long as our pains and happiness are there, and as long as we are in the body, we will have to do the Bhajan and Simran. We will have to do the meditation as well as paying off our karmas. We are sitting or living in this human body only because of our karmas. If all our karmas are paid off then how can we come back into this body? How will we sit in this body? Guru Nanak Sahib says, "The bird is imprisoned in this cage of love and in whatever way the Lord makes that bird speak, he speaks. But when he eats the food or the nectar, then he breaks open this cage and flies out of it for good." The body is the cage and the soul is that bird or parrot, and because this bird has become attached and is in love with this cage that is why she is speaking the language of the pains and happiness. But when, rising above the body, and rising above the pains and happiness, she eats the food of that Anhad Shabd just for once, she has to come into this world. If she eats the food of that Anhad Shabd just for once she opens that cage and flies out of it forever. SANT BANI

Dear Sant Ji, while doing Simran is you still feel afraid?" He said, "No, I only feel afraid it best to remember the Master, also when I sit in meditation." So I told is it appropriate to hold a motive him, "This is only because you are for doing Simran? not strong-hearted and you do not It is a very good question I hope have enough faith and confidence, that everyone will write the answer that the fear is bothering you." in the village where I used to live there was a dear one who once needed some money so he sat in meditation with this worldly desire or thought of getting the money. Over there he saw his trunk full of all the currency notes. So at once he told his daughter to open the trunk and see if the trunk was all full of those notes. He also said that if he would open his eyes they would disappear. When she opened the trunk there were no notes there because it was just in his mind that he was seeing the notes. When you think about the worldly things you do not get anything. So he came to me and he told me that this is what happened to him, that he was sitting in the meditation with this thought and he saw that his trunk was full of the notes but that was not so, it was not real. I told him, "Dear one, if in a state of dreams you eat sweets and other goodies, you don't feel satisfied, you don't remove your hunger, so it is like that; even if you see all these worldly things inside, still you are not getting them." The meditation is only done, dear ones, to remove the worldly thoughts from our within. The meditation is done only to empty our within which is filled with the worldly thoughts, so that our Beloved can come and reside there. All the Satsangis should always remember those couple of things which I always remind you before October 1994

we sit in the meditation. The first thing is that you should not understand meditation as a burden you should always do it lovingly. The other thing is that before you sit in meditation-all the anxieties, worries, desires of the world which are coming within you just like the waves in the ocean-you should first cool them down, quiet them down, and then do the Simran. If you will do the Simran after forgetting all the worldly wishes and desires, then as Guru Nanak says, "If you do the Simran like that, after quieting down your mind and all the desires of the world, just one moment of the Simran will be enough for you." I have told you about this incidence earlier also. Once there was an initiate of Baba Sawan Singh in a place called Muksar. She came to me saying that she had come for doing the meditation and she would leave only after the inner veil was lifted up, only when the inner door was opened. I became very pleased and I said, "Thanks be to you, that you have come for doing the meditation." Since she was an elderly lady I told the girls who were there doing the seva, "You should take care of her; you should serve her." So those girls would serve her very much and they would even wash her clothes and do all the things for her. Then that elderly woman, whose name was Bhagwanti, asked us to call another woman who used

to live about two miles from our place. I knew that lady, and I also knew that Bhagwanti was very talkative, and the other lady whom she wanted to invite was also very talkative. So I told her, "Just you alone are not able to control yourself, and if you invite this other person who is as talkative as you, how are both of you going to manage doing the meditation?" She meditated for a few more days, and then she came to me and said that she wanted to go back to Muksar and I should arrange for her to go back to her place. I asked her, "Why do you want to go back to your home? Your sons came and they dropped you here, now it is very difficult for us to make arrangements to take you back to your home. But why do you want to go back? You came here to do the meditation." She told me when she sat in meditation she was seeing her sons in front of her, also she saw all the work to be done at her home, and the worldly things, and that was bothering her very much and she wanted to back to her home. So dear ones if she had remembered Master Sawan Singh, if she had this motive of manifesting Master Sawan Singh within her, then she would have become successful in that. But what happened when she sat in the meditation? First it was her mind that encouraged her to come to me and do the meditation and that is why she came. But when 30

she started doing the meditation she started remembering her family. Because she was remembering them and thinking about them, the balance or the weight of the worldly things was more, that is why she gave in to that attachment and she did not fulfill the wish that she had of manifesting Baba Sawan Singh. So I told her, "Dear one, if you had sat with the motive of manifesting Master Sawan Singh He would have come to you, He would have manifested Himself within you. But since you were remembering and you were attached to your family members, that is why your sons and your worldly work came in front of you." Both Master Sawan Singh and Master Kirpal Singh were very gracious ones and many times when any true seeker would come to Them, They would at once agree to give them the Initiation and they would initiate them right there. They were very gracious ones. Once it so happened-I have narrated this incident to you previously also-that in my home, when Master Kirpal was visiting, one dear one came and asked Master Kirpal Singh for the Initiation. Master Kirpal was so gracious that He readily accepted him and He told me to convey the Initiation to that dear one. Master was resting in one room and I took that dear one into another room and I made him sit in the meditation and I also sat with him, closing my eyes. It didn't take him more than a few SANT BANI

moments to get up from that place and run away. I did not know that he had already left that place; I was sitting there to convey the Initiation to this dear one and after a while I realized that the person whom I was initiating was not sitting there and I was sitting there all by myself. When I realized that I came out and I ran after him. He had already travelled two kilometers on the road which was just in front of my house. So when I got a hold of him I asked him what had happened. He said, "Well, I don't know what happened. I came from my home and family; I was so absorbed in my work and family. And I came to the Master, He was very gracious, and He accepted me to get the Initiation and you were giving it to me and I don't know what happened. Once again my mind played a trick on me. Master was very gracious, but my mind did not let me take advantage of that grace, and he put me on this road back to my home." So dear ones when we sit in the meditation we have to be very careful. All the satsangis, as I have often said, before you sit in meditation, make sure that you remember the Five Holy Names, because those are the Words, those are the Names given to you by your Master. If you are doing the Simran, then you will also remember the Master who has given you the Simran. The Form of the Master will appear in front of you by Himself if you will remember October 1994

Him, if you will do the Simran given to you by Him. So when you will do the Simran like that, remembering the Form of the Master, then all the worldly thoughts will go away. That is why I always say that you should remove all the anxieties, all the worries, and thoughts and desires of this world when you sit in meditation. When you weed out all your thoughts and all these worldly things, when you will throw out all these things using the broom of the Simran, then your within will become empty, so either your Simran will remain there or the Master who has given you the Simran will remain there. When we do the Initiations, Pappu and Gurmel do not close their eyes and meditate when the people close their eyes and meditate because they have this duty. Also during the morning meditations there are a couple of dear ones here who just keep guard. But in the early days, even though I would tell people, "I promise you that I am not going to leave you sitting here, I will also sit with you." But in the early days, what would happen, some dear ones would open their eyes and get up, and they would walk a little bit and then they would again sit there. Or sometimes they would open their eyes to see if everyone was still sitting there or not. I am very pleased to see that now the dear ones are getting into the habit of sitting in meditation. That 31

is why I prefer not to miss any meditation sitting. If I have to miss a Satsang then it may be all right, but I don't like to miss the meditation sittings. That is why when I come here to do the meditation I am very pleased looking at the dear ones, at how people are now sitting in the meditation. Because mind is such that if you make him do something, in the beginning he will not do it, but gradually, later on, the more you go on making him do something then he starts enjoying it and then you will become successful in it. So I am very happy when I come and meditate with all of you, that you dear ones sit here with very much love. When I open my eyes, a couple of minutes before I make you leave off, I see my dear children sitting in the meditation and that gives me immense pleasure. Especially when I see on many dear ones a lot of glory and radiance so that makes

me very happy to see that my children are now meditating. Often I have said that Sant Mat is based on Reality, it exists on the Truth, it is not a fairy tale. Whatever the Masters have said, whatever the Masters have conveyed to us, is one hundred percent true. So with firm determination, with faith, with love, we should do our meditation. The Master also becomes very happy. Everyday one should make the effort of manifesting that Stream of the Shabd, that Current of the Shabd, to flow within us in the lifetime of the Master. The Master also becomes very happy when His disciples, when His dear ones are able to manifest that Sound Current within them while He is still in the body. He becomes happy, "At least there are some dear ones who have become what I have wanted them to become."
