hen John P. Jones, a U.S. Senator from Nevada, and Colonel Robert S. Baker founded the town of Santa Monica and set out to create the oceanside resort town in the late 1800s, they knew visitors would be drawn to the area’s wide beaches and blue skies. They were right: As sunseekers made their way west, city by the sea, pearl of the Pacific, city of inspiration, and jewel of the sunset bay were just a few of the nicknames they bestowed on the coastal destination.

ooking is an art for Chef Josiah Citrin, who stands at the helm of the Michelin two-star Mélisse and one-star Citrin. His masterpieces are ever-evolving: Citrin’s tomato soup, a staple for 20 years, started out with roasted shallots, garlic and flan. “Today it’s nowhere near the soup it was when we started,” Citrin says. As strawberries ripened on the vine, they were added to the soup as a sorbet. And then a sweet garlic flan. Now the soup also includes summer squash. “Even the same ingredients can taste different.” Citrin, who was born and raised in Santa Monica, sharpened his culinary chops in Paris before returning to the West Coast. He always knew the coastal city would be the launchpad for his restaurants. “That was a must,” he says. “Santa Monica is my home.” When Citrin opened his latest project, Augie’s on Main, in 2022, he brought his “dirty chicken” to Main Street. “At Citrin, we’d been working on a chicken dish, and its flavor profile is delicious.” That “dirty” Jidori chicken — known for its crisp, garlicy and lemony panko crust — is now widely available at the fast-casual establishment. The menus at each of Citrin’s restaurants reflect Santa Monica’s culture. “I know what people like and want. I’m proud of the restaurants and what I’ve contributed to the city,” says Citrin. “They’re a place for people to go — for locals to come and for visitors to celebrate. I’ve watched children grow up, graduate and return home. Being a part of that and a part of the community is amazing to me.”

MÉLISSE

Known for: Luxuriously fine dining. First awarded two Michelin stars in 2008, the restaurant reemerged as a more intimate, more exclusive dining destination — with just 14 seats — in 2019 after a brief hiatus. Expect a perfectly curated and indulgent experience, from the food and wine to the setting and soundtrack. Stands out: Chef Citrin works closely with California farmers to source the best ingredients available for a multi-course tasting menu to be enjoyed over a period of two and a half hours. Chef de Cuisine Ian Scaramuzza’s elegant, French-inspired dishes build on the stellar foundation of success established by Citrin over two decades. Chef’s favorite: “My current favorite on the Mélisse menu is the charcoal-grilled Japanese amadai (tilefish) with tetragonia, seaweed and dulse. It has the perfect balance of flavor and textures with the brininess of the seaweed, slight smokiness from the charcoal and crunchiness from the tempura pieces.” CITRIN

Known for: Delivering a fun, welcoming and approachable experience. Choose between prix fixe and their a la carte menu. No reservation is required at the bar. Known for unapologetically French cooking, this elevated classic bistro menu features seasonal produce and contemporary presentations. Command attention in a très chic setting by pre-ordering the canard à la Rouennaise à la presse, a three-course feast for two that involves a silver antique duck press. Chef Dave Beran is no stranger to fine dining, as a past James Beard award-winner and having worked at Alinea before earning his first Michelin star for Dialogue, a tiny gem of a restaurant that closed due to the pandemic. From its home on Main Street, Pasjoli roasts about 90 ducks a week. “There are only three dishes that have been on the menu since we opened,” says Beran. “The duck press, the foie brioche and the chocolate soufflé. We’re best known for our duck, and stick as close as we can to the original recipe from the early 1900s.” No reservations? Try the first-come, firstserved bar seating for a full dinner, or light snack of caviar and blinis.

At its core, Rustic Canyon is peak Californian cuisine featuring seasonal, locally-inspired dishes. Its constantly changing menu is an expression of the region. Thanks to James Beard-nominated chef/partner Jeremy Fox’s vegetable-forward style, you’ll encounter an expert take on what’s in season and available at the nearby Santa Monica Farmers Market at any given moment. In addition to plenty of vegetables and local, sustainably harvested seafood, the menu features house-made terrines and charcuterie, and comforting entrées showcasing California meat and poultry that can be enjoyed on their own or shared. At this beloved neighborhood spot, the team also takes an innovative, slow food approach. Nearly every part of an ingredient is creatively utilized in a savory dish, dessert or cocktail, resulting in a zero-waste ethos that’s unrivaled among restaurants of this caliber. Even the seawater that comes in with fresh fish deliveries gets preserved to make fresh sea salt.

Here’s the first thing to know about Capo, the intimate, candle-lit Italian restaurant on the corner of Ocean Avenue and Vicente Terrace: If you’re toasting a special occasion, you’ll have more than 2,500 labels and 24,000 bottles to choose from. “Finding the greatest wines is a passion of mine,” says owner and chef Bruce Marder, who began his collection when he started cooking in 1972. For four consecutive years, Capo has received an acknowledgement with The Wine Spectator Grand Award of Excellence. The second thing: If you’re craving Italian food, this is among Santa Monica’s best. The remarkable menu features homemade pasta with rigatoni meat sauce, fresh seafood and fireside-grilled meats. Marder’s go-to order? Corn ravioli truffles: fresh corn and ricotta in agnolotti, finished with butter and black truffles. Getting to and from Santa Monica BY AIR LOS ANGELES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (LAX)

Only about eight non-freeway miles (13 kilometers) from Santa Monica, LAX is the closest airport, with bus service and shuttles. flylax.com Transportation options to and from LAX include:

TAXI AND RIDESHARE SERVICE

For taxi service from LAX to Santa Monica, depending on location, the charge ranges from about $45–$60, plus tip (15 to 20 percent of fare). A $4 surcharge is levied on trips originating from LAX. Arriving passengers must take the shuttle or walk to the LAX-it lot, before hailing a taxi or rideshare. Uber and Lyft drivers also drop off and pick up LAX passengers. These rates to or from Santa Monica start around $25 but vary by time and number of passengers.

Surf conditions are available at surfline.com. Flags mark the designated swimming and body-boarding area. No surfing is allowed between two of these flags. Lifeguards place the flags to designate the safest area in which to swim. In compliance with California’s new Safe Sidewalk Vending Act, Santa Monica city laws now allow sidewalk vending in public spaces where it was formerly restricted. While the new program puts public health and safety at the forefront, it is important to follow the advice below when purchasing from sidewalk vendors. u Only buy from vendors with a decal affixed to their cart or worn on a badge indicating that they have a vending permit issued by the City of Santa Monica. u Only buy food from a vendor who also has a valid Los Angeles County-issued public health permit and displays a colored sticker with the county seal on it as proof, similar to restaurants. Look for a sign with an “A” rating. Vendors who do not have such a permit may be preparing food in unsanitary conditions, not have clean water on site to wash their hands or utensils, have obtained food from an unapproved source, be storing food at unsafe temperatures or not be protecting food from contamination in other ways. u Don’t buy from vendors in high-traffic areas in Downtown, at the Pier and on the beach, where sidewalk vending is prohibited for safety reasons.

SEAT BELTS

Drivers and passengers must wear seat belts at all times. Children under 8 years old and shorter than 4 feet 9 inches tall must use a child safety seat. CELL PHONE/HANDS-FREE DRIVING

California law prohibits drivers from holding mobile devices while driving. To use a device, it must be mounted to the windshield, dashboard or center console so as not to hinder the driver’s view, and allow for hands-free or voice-activated features and apps. DRUGS AND ALCOHOL

Driving under the influence of alcohol, marijuana or drugs (DUI) is a serious offense in California. A person is legally drunk with a blood alcohol level of 0.08 percent or higher. Alcohol consumption is illegal for anyone under 21. TRAFFIC RULES

Except at pedestrian scrambles when the “walk” light is on, or unless otherwise posted, drivers are allowed to turn right at a red light after bringing the vehicle to a stop as long as foot, bicycle and auto traffic are clear. Cars are not permitted in bus lanes, except to make right turns, which are restricted during peak periods by posted signs. Drivers are required to pull over to the side of the road for law enforcement and other emergency vehicles with lights and sirens on.

WALKING

LIGHT RAIL

Most hotels, attractions and primary shopping and dining spots are within easy walking distance of one another. The city is easily and safely explored on foot, but visitors are urged to be alert and watch the road. When you are traveling, always be aware of your surroundings. Walk in well-lit populated areas and do not leave luggage or valuables visible in your vehicle.

Serving the sprawling LA metropolis with 108 stations that cover nearly 109 miles, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro; 323-466-3876, metro.net) provides light rail access to Santa Monica via three stations on the Metro E Line: Downtown Santa Monica; 17th Street/Santa Monica College; and 26th Street/Bergamot Station. From Santa Monica, riders can head to Downtown Los Angeles and transfer to other Metro rail and bus lines to reach the San Fernando Valley, Pasadena, Norwalk, the South Bay, Universal Studios® Hollywood and Long Beach. The K Line makes it easy to get to the Los Angeles International Airport. A bonus for visitors commuting to and from Downtown L.A.: trains run approximately every six minutes during peak hours and every 12 minutes during midday hours. Cyclists are welcome to carry their bikes onto Metro trains.

Be Safe u Pedestrians have the right-of-way at crosswalks. Use caution and make eye contact with drivers to make sure they have seen you and are stopping their vehicle. You may only cross in marked crosswalks. u Texting or wearing headphones or earbuds and listening to music while walking impedes your hearing and can be distracting. u Know when to cross — only with the green light or when the “walk” sign and audible signal are activated. At “pedestrian-scramble” intersections, a pedestrian-only phase is included in the signal-light cycle, allowing people on foot and bikes to cross in every direction, including diagonally, at the same time. u Use extra care when crossing with children and strollers. Be Safe u Always keep your distance from a train in motion. Stay away from the edge of the platform, never run after or next to a moving train, and wait for the train to come to a full stop before approaching. u Don’t skate or ride your bicycle on the platform, stairs or escalators. u When boarding, be careful while crossing the gap between the platform and train. u Stand clear of the train doors; touching them or leaning on them could obstruct their movement. u Never climb railroad vehicles or walk on the tracks. u Be mindful of lowered crossing gates. Never try to beat the train by going around the gates. Instead, wait for them to rise after the train passes. u As a pedestrian, look and listen for trains in all directions.

Santa Monica’s award-winning Big Blue Bus serves Santa Monica, West Los Angeles, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and 10 neighboring communities with more than 900 bus stops and 20 service lines, including a weekday express line that connects Downtown Santa Monica to Downtown LA. The eco- friendly buses run on alternative fuels, including renewable natural gas and battery electric, and have front-mounted bike racks to accommodate cyclists. HOW TO USE ELECTRIC SCOOTERS/BIKES

Each company’s app varies, but in general, here’s how it works: Download the app. Locate and unlock a scooter following prompts in the app. Push off with your foot to get going, then keep your feet on the footboard. For most scooters, control the throttle button with your right thumb and squeeze the brake with your left hand to slow down or stop. End your ride by parking safely and locking the scooter within the app. Average price to scoot is $1 to unlock and $0.39 per minute used.

Be Safe u Motorized scooter riders must be at least 16 years old and have a valid driver’s license or instruction permit. u Helmets are required for riders under age 18, and it’s wise for riders of all ages to wear one. Riding with a passenger is prohibited. In partnership with Veo, Santa Monica Travel & Tourism’s three visitor centers offer free “one-size-fits-most” helmets plus free helmet recycling. u Motorized scooters must be driven on the road, never on the sidewalk. Follow traffic rules and watch for obstructions and potholes. u Scooters cannot be parked on the sidewalk in the way of pedestrian traffic. Park in the “furniture zone” (the section of sidewalk between the curb and the pedestrian traffic zone containing street furniture, lighting fixtures, benches, utility poles, tree pits and bicycle racks) in Downtown Santa Monica and on Main Street or in one of the areas marked specifically for scooter and bike parking. u Motorized scooters may not be driven on beach bike paths, Santa Monica Pier, Third Street Promenade or in municipal parks, including Palisades Park. u Night use of motorized scooters lacking proper lighting equipment, which includes reflectors and a front light source visible from the front and sides, is illegal.

ow one of the most photographed locations in the world, the Santa Monica Pier started as a city pipeline in 1909. It didn’t take long, however, for locals and visitors to transform the modest municipal Pier into a bustling fishing and boating destination. When Charles Looff, a well-known carousel manufacturer, laid eyes on the pier less than a decade later, he knew it had the makings of his dream amusement park. Built around the Looff Hippodrome, which housed his new carousel — complete with 44 handcarved horses — “The Looff Pleasure Pier” quickly snowballed into a collection of thrill rides and roller coasters. Today, the four million visitors who come each year to experience the magic of the Pier experience the world’s first solar-powered Ferris wheel, alongside rides and attractions, restaurants, shops, street performers and some of the city’s most iconic views.
