Looking Ahead 2015 has the makings of an eventful, productive year for the Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce. Building on great progress last year under the leadership of 2014 Board of Directors Chairman Rolf Nelson and Chamber CEO Jonathan Coe, the Chamber is poised to take important programs and activities to the next level over the coming 12 months. Our roadmap for 2015 was laid out last year by the board, when directors created the following set of ambitious strategic initiatives: • Improve our economy by supporting the Chamber’s Building Economic Success Together (BEST) program in reaching its first five-year goal of creating of 2,500 new jobs in Sonoma County, and by launching “BEST 2020”—the second five-year phase • Create revenue growth for hospitality members through the Chamber’s Convention
and Visitors Bureau (CVB), using Business Improvement Area (BIA) funds and other resources to implement sales and marketing programs that increase occupancy in Santa Rosa hotels, encourage spending by visitors, and bolster the local economy • Nurture a pro-business environment by implementing 2015 strategies for the Chamber’s Advocacy Council and Political Action Committee, and expanding our efforts in the area of workforce development • Advocate for downtown Santa Rosa as the vital center of the city by working with downtown merchants, property owners and the City of Santa Rosa • Enable member businesses to grow and thrive by expanding existing programs and creating new ones that support their success • Create new programs and mechanisms that enhance collaboration among business organizations in Sonoma

The list of Chamber committees and programs that will be instrumental in our success this year is lengthy. Here are just a few: • Young Professionals Network (YPN) • Leadership Santa Rosa (LSR) • Mike Hauser Algebra Academy • Worksite Held Employee English Learning (WHEEL) • Special events (Wake Up Santa Rosa, monthly Mixers, Agri-Business Barbecue, Annual Golf Tournament) • BEST’s Technology Industry Group (TIG) and Food Industry Group (FIG) • Advocacy Council task forces (transportation, land use, downtown, natural resources)
In 2015, we will remain involved in the pivotal issues affecting our business community. From working with the Sonoma County Airport to add commercial air service to eastern destinations to participating in the dialog on reunification of Courthouse Square, and from recruiting and supporting pro-business candidates for local political offices to working with Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) to ensure the new rail system is a viable commute alternative for employees of local companies, the Chamber will continue as the most respected voice of business in the greater Santa Rosa area. I have been on the Chamber board of directors for nearly 10 years, and my organization has been a member for more than 40 years, first as Hewlett-Packard Company, then under the name Agilent Technologies, and now as

Making a difference by growing our economy As our business community heads into 2015, there is much to celebrate, especially from the perspective of five years ago when we were all in the grips of the Great Recession. Unemployment is down, employment is back up and, most importantly, business confidence continues to improve. We all have a tendency to credit these changes to great and mysterious market and economic forces that shape our lives and that remain beyond our ability to impact. And, of course, this is true to a great extent. The national economy is rebounding although more slowly than ours. California has, once again, led the way out of the recession and, while inland areas still struggle, the coastal regions have far outstripped the rest of the state and country. Thus, to use a tired metaphor, a rising tide has helped to raise the boats in our harbor. However, there is something more at work here in Sonoma County. Here we have seen a concerted and deliberate effort to grow our economy. We have not been content to rely on the ebb and flow of the tide but have instead invested in efforts to raise the water level here locally. “We’ve focused our economic efforts primarily in two areas,” said Jonathan Coe, Chamber President and CEO. “First, we’ve worked hard to promote Santa Rosa as a visitor destination. Those visitors coming here infuse new income into our community that then circulates widely—even to non-hospitality business. Secondly, we’ve created Sonoma County BEST as a means to help existing businesses grow and to attract new ones. Importantly, we’ve worked with many partners in both cases.” In the heart of Santa Rosa beats an economic development
engine that thrives on all there is to see and do in Sonoma Wine Country. Charged with bringing overnight visitors, the Santa Rosa Convention & Visitors Bureau has been growing Santa Rosa’s cachet as a destination through marketing campaigns funded by the Santa Rosa Tourism Business Improvement Area (SRTBIA). Officially launched in September of 2010 the SRTBIA 3% assessment resulted in approximately $750,000 being available for the CVB’s 2011 efforts to market and sell Santa Rosa. By 2014 this number jumped to over $1,000,000 and hotel revenues were vaulted to a record high, exceeding the banner year of 2007. “In the calendar year just ended, the CVB booked 7,936 group room nights in Santa Rosa,” said Brad Calkins, CVB Executive Director. “That’s more than double the number we booked in 2011.” In large part, that’s due to an aggressive marketing and PR campaign that includes traditional media outlets along with new opportunities including electronic and social media. The Visit Santa Rosa Facebook page has seen outstanding growth in the last three years, and the level of engagement with those who like the page proves that the local events, businesses, and attractions truly make Santa Rosa a Place of Plenty. While social media reaches out and connects visitors in new ways, a more traditional, brick and mortar mode of distributing information to visitors has proven itself indispensable. Housed in the 1906 historic train depot, the CVB-run Welcome Center in Railroad Square celebrated their 10th anniversary as an official California Welcome Center in 2013. Since being awarded the official designation in 2003, the Welcome Center has received well over 500,000 visitors and

brought over $50,000,000 in economic impact to our local economy. Each representative is trained by the National Certified Tourism Ambassador™ Program (CTA) to ensure the best possible experience for all visitors while offering valuable information and services to travelers. While the CVB focuses on tourism, Sonoma County BEST, our collaborative public-private partnership continues to build on the targeted, collaborative, and metrics-driven work begun in 2012. Over the course of 2014, BEST met with 100 companies for business expansion and retention efforts, resolved 98% of business assistance requests, and helped businesses create 669 new jobs in our region. Broadly speaking, BEST’s goal is to work with businesses
to create 2,500 new jobs in Sonoma County over five years. As of the end of year three, its efforts have resulted in the creation of 1,674 jobs. In addition, BEST has worked with other economic development organizations to recruit new companies to the area. To date, BEST has recruited four businesses that now employ 90 people in our County. These combined numbers put us right on track to reach our job creation goals. Sonoma County has many thriving industries, and BEST, in cooperation with the EDB, is focused on target industries that offer great opportunity for economic growth. BEST has established industry groups in the manufacturing sector as well as the specialty foods and food processing sector that are
helping companies within these clusters collaborate to discuss and resolve industry-wide issues while learning best practices and building partnerships. Branded as the FIG (Food Industry Group) and TIG (Technology Industry Group), these groups have engaged over 50 different companies in collective problem solving and opportunity development. While most job growth for our area will come from existing businesses, businesses from outside of the region are starting to realize the attraction of relocating to the North Bay. Synergy Health, a Swindon, England based medical device sterilization company, leased space within the new Labcon building in Petaluma last year. Attracting this business to Sonoma County was the result of

a collaborative effort between one of the region’s largest manufacturers, medical device manufacturer Labcon, Sonoma County BEST, the City of Petaluma, and PG&E. “The services Synergy Health will offer will be a key to expanding medical device manufacturing in Sonoma County and all of the North Bay,” said Jim Happ, President of Labcon. “For years, our vision has been to bring companies together at one site that are complementary in terms of the values they exhibit, the products they produce or services they provide to the manufacturing community. Having Synergy Health commit to Petaluma is exactly what we envisioned for the site.” The new Petaluma location provides solutions to industries in the medical devices and pharmaceuticals, specialized applications and contamination control sectors. Previously, these services were not available locally. Synergy Health brings resources and capabilities many advanced manufacturers in the region will utilize. This type of company acts as a catalyst in an already growing life science and medical device sectors in Sonoma County. These targeted, collaborative, and metrics-driven actions are a result of BEST’s proven methodology for job growth. By working with businesses to identify their challenges and opportunities, and then acting to help them resolve those issues, BEST enables business success, fosters job growth, and promotes economic vitality in our region.

Making a difference in public policy As the voice of business in Santa Rosa, the Chamber plays an important role representing its members. “We speak on behalf of those businesses that don’t have the time or resources to attend meetings and speak out for themselves,” said Jonathan Coe, Chamber President and CEO. “Our goal is to ensure that our members are heard.” The Advocacy Council’s Leaders and Liaisons program goes directly to the source, meeting once a month with elected officials to develop open and honest communication. Usually meeting for a morning coffee, but also connecting through phone calls, emails or at events, these informal engagements are a means to share the business community’s thoughts on projects and issues as well as receive feedback from elected leaders. Advocacy stayed engaged on a variety of issues in 2014. The Chamber weighedin effectively on a major proposal for re-envisioning the downtown area. After conducting 50 in-person interviews with local downtown business and property
owners that revealed their strong desire to have a reunified Courthouse Square, the Advocacy Council put together an action plan. Individual discussions and a formal presentation at a City Council meeting outlined the strong support tempered by the desire for more consultation with business community stakeholders, flexibility in amending the design, and the project to be done in “discrete” stages or phases. In October the City Council gave the go-ahead vote for the reunification of Old Courthouse Square and the Advocacy Council’s downtown task force remains engaged on developments in the recreation this vital focal point of downtown Santa Rosa. In the area of workforce development, the Advocacy Council recommended, the Chamber Board supported, and the Chamber actively campaigned for passage of Measure H, the $410 million bond measure to fund a list of targeted projects at Santa Rosa Junior College. SRJC will remain a unique and vital community Public Policy: page 7

Investing in the next generation that will enter our community’s workforce, the Mike Hauser Algebra Academy is a three week program held at area businesses where students learn algebra standards and their application to high-tech real-world situations.
“The Mike Hauser Algebra Academy is a great example of what collaboration between local businesses and education can do,” said Fred Van Milligen, Vice President of
Programs such as the Mike Hauser Algebra Academy exemplify the Chamber’s ongoing commitment to workforce development and its importance for our member businesses. Our business community’s future success is dependent on the workers’ skills, and the Algebra Academy is one means for the Chamber to directly and dramatically improve the skills of our future workforce.
This past year’s Algebra Academy expanded enrollment from 60 to 140 area English Language Learner (ELL) students entering the ninth grade in the fall, including 30 students in the Healdsburg area – to date the program has only served Santa Rosa schools.

“The ultimate goal is to reach 300 students, or 25% of Sonoma County’s ELL eighth graders, each summer,” said Jonathan Coe, President/CEO of the Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce. “If we can do that, then we have a real chance at moving the needle and improving graduation rates.” The business community has really stepped up to help make this program possible. An increase in the program’s student participants also required an increase in the number of businesses to host the program. In Santa Rosa, Keysight Technologies, JDSU, Medtronic, and Pacific Gas & Electric were returning hosts while Deposition Sciences, TLCD Architecture, and the City of

PUBLIC POLICY: continued from page 6 resource for higher education and workforce development in our community by upgrading older technology, classrooms, laboratories, and facilities. Passage of this measure this past Fall helps provide our local high school graduates and community greater access to high-quality, affordable college education, especially in biology, physics, chemistry, engineering and other high-tech careers.
“The Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce played a key role with the runway safety improvement project of the Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport,” said Jon Stout, Airport Manager. “Attending environmental hearings, assisting with the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors decision process, and participating in air service development meetings accelerated the project.”
The Chamber’s advocacy work covers both the minutiae of local issues to seachange developments that have shaped our community. The Chamber can point to a long history of successful advocacy that includes spearheading plans for the Golden Gate Bridge, donating the original land for the Santa Rosa Junior College, assisting in the launching of Memorial Hospital, and supporting the improvements of Highway 101. And after of years of Chamber advocacy work on promoting runway safety upgrades and improvements at the Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport, 2014 saw the final phases of that construction completed.
In January 2014, Chamber President/ CEO Jonathan Coe and Airport Manager Jon Stout traveled to Chicago and met with airline executives to discuss future commercial airline flights from Santa Rosa to the major travel hub of Denver. Securing this type of connection will benefit the many local businesses that send employees east, will make our area more attractive to new business, and will be a boon to Sonoma County tourism growth. Although no commitments were made during that January meeting, Chamber Advocacy continues to pursue securing regularly scheduled commercial airline service to a major travel hub like Denver.
Complementing the Advocacy Council, the Chamber Political Action Committee (CPAC) is the group that makes recommendations to the Chamber Board on candidate endorsements and ballot initiative positions. In this past election year, CPAC moved beyond their traditional recommendations for City Council and County Supervisors, recommending to the Chamber Board a slate of candidates that also included State Assembly, State Senate and
US Congressional candidates. Ten of the eleven endorsed candidates were victorious in the primary and general elections, and voters agreed with all seven recommendations on ballot issues. “So much of what government does at its various levels impact how our members do business and it’s important that the Chamber be involved in the discussion,” Coe said. “We make a significant difference by speaking out for the needs and interests of our member businesses.”
Looking Ahead: continued from page 3 Keysight Technologies—the largest public company headquartered in Sonoma County. As a premier member, Keysight invests in the Chamber because of its well-deserved reputation for working effectively and consistently on the most important economic vitality and quality of life issues in the greater Santa Rosa area. Making a difference for our members Above all else, the Chamber works to make a difference for our members. “The Chamber exists to help our member businesses thrive,” says Jonathan Coe, Chamber President. “Ultimately everything we do including our Advocacy and Economic Development work has that purpose. But much of what we do each
year is to provide services and activities that benefit our individual members.” Over the past year, thousands of attendees participated in Chamber events and workshops, and hundreds of member businesses enlisted in event sponsorship opportunities as an ideal
opportunity to market their business. “This past year we’ve opened up new levels of marketing opportunities ranging from $150 table sponsorships to top-level event sponsorships,” says Janet Rogers, Vice President of Member Services. “They’re a great way to increase visibility and credibility.” Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom delivered the keynote address, “Small Business — California’s Economic Growth Engine”, and helped present the multi-chamber Outstanding Small Business awards at May’s Small Business Week Breakfast. The Chamber celebrated with 49 new and growing area businesses by coordinating ribbon cutting ceremonies for grand openings, expansions, new locations, and significant anniversaries. “It’s great to call attention to the success of our members, gathering together Chamber ambassadors and members to celebrate, and publicizing these accomplishments in our newsletter and on social media,” said Steve Lyman, Membership Sales Manager at the Chamber. “Hundreds of people view the pictures we post on Facebook from each of these celebrations, which is great for getting the word out about a new or expanding business.” Yet membership in the Chamber even benefits those businesses who don’t actively participate in events. Member businesses are promoted to the thousands of monthly website visitors and through the thousands of printed copies of the Community Resource and Business Guide. From workshops to largescale programs, the Santa Rosa Chamber organizes and runs programs that foster individual development, positively impact business, and strengthen our community. The Chamber also acts as an informational resource for members. “We have great connections in our community to programs and organizations that can provide guidance,” said the Chamber’s Vice President of Development, Tammi Matthias. “I’m often able to put a manager of one of our member businesses in touch with another to assist in solving immediate problems. It’s great to be able to provide that sort of mutually beneficial support.” See For Our Members: page 12

For our members: continued from page 10
Perhaps that’s why the Santa Rosa Chamber received two awards in NorthBay biz’s Best of 2014 Readers’ Poll — for Best Chamber and Best Chamber Event — while the list of Sonoma County winners read like a who’s who of the membership. Not unsurprisingly, 225 new members joined the Chamber in 2014 to expand networking and relationship-building opportunities and add prospects to build working relationships. The membership now includes over 960 area businesses, strengthening the Chamber’s ability to make a difference for members and our community. The Santa Rosa Chamber works hard to help all of our member businesses succeed and build a stronger business community. For more information about realizing the benefits for your business and joining our efforts to build a vibrant, sustainable economy in our region, contact Tammi Matthias or Steve Lyman at (707) 545-1414.
