Santa Ynez Valley This year we celebrate a milestone...30 years of the iconic Quick Draw! In 1986, the first "Quick Draw" art competition was held in Los Olivos. Conceived as an exciting event where talented artists raced against the clock to complete a drawing, painting or sculpture, it was originally 45-minutes. Afterward, the artwork was sold during a live auction with proceeds going towards next year's event and the promotion of art in Los Olivos. Started by Bob and Beverly Whitmore, Lida Wing, and Norma Gray, the original committee sought to promote the rich artistic heritage of the area. Through the years, the Quick Draw event was successively organized by Judith Hale, then the Los Olivos Business Organization with the help of Los Olivos non-profits, until finding it's current home for the past 4 years with the Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association, a 501(c)(3) non-profit. There have been some changes...featured Quick Draw artists now receive 60-minutes to create an original work of art...a quick pace that still makes every mark count as they work toward completion! But the original premise remains much the same. The Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association (SYV Arts) is committed to supporting access and exposure to the artistic heritage of the Santa Ynez Valley in a number of ways. The proceeds from the signature Quick Draw event on Saturday, Nov. 5, go towards our efforts to support the work of artists, non-profit art organizations, and art businesses/supporters throughout the Valley - this year, we are especially excited that the SYV Arts is celebrating the 30th year of the quick draw with our largest collaboration to date! This year's Quick Draw & Arts Festival brings focused attention to many of the fine institutions and businesses who provide unique arts and culture experiences on a regular basis. We hope you will have an enjoyable weekend exploring the events that have been planned, finding art and music in unexpected places, and discovering the cultural heart beat of the Valley. Don't forget to pick up a Free Quick Draw & Arts Festival wristband available at the Wildling Museum of Art & Nature and the Elverhøj Museum of History & Art throughout the weekend, while supplies last. Festival wristbands may be good for discounts or specials at participating locations. Don't forget to pick up a printed Festival Guide while you are there too! "The work I have pursued for the last four decades is rooted in my early love of the American and European abstractionists of the forties and fifties. The direction and ongoing tenor of my painting was deeply influenced by my upbringing in a sophisticated social environment that exposed me to contemporary art, architecture, music (especially jazz), and design, as well as the art of the past masters."
Buttonwood Farm Winery Tasting Room is featuring a show of current paintings by family partner and resident artist, Seyburn Zorthian. The paintings are inspired by music, specifically, Jazz, Italian Baroque, classic rock, Motown and other danceable oeuvres. On Sunday, November 6th continue your weekend of cultural experiences in the Valley with a Champagne Sunday Brunch at the Santa Ynez Valley Foundation building, 164 West Hwy 246, behind the library. Starting at 10:30 am and serving until 2:00 pm, you can enjoy a fabulous brunch buffet. This event is catered by Country Garden Catering, with proceeds going to the local Meals on Wheels program. Unfortunately, though, your artwork will not be able to be auctioned off.
We hope you will join us for a delicious meal and personal artistic experience. Please Note: Prepaid RSVPs for $20.00 per person are required by November 3rd; after that date, the cost is $25 per person, and it will be first come first served until sold out. Please mail a check, payable to the SYV Senior Citizens' Foundation, to P.O. Box 1946, Buellton, CA 93427 or call 688-4571 and give your credit or debit card number to Pam or Merrill.
