Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association Offers Scholarships Seniors who will be graduating this year from a high school in the Santa Ynez Valley (or an accredited home schooling program) are invited to apply for one of the art scholarships offered by generous donations to the SYV Arts’ General Scholarship Fund. This year the Association plans to disburse individual merit awards to students who will be attending an accredited college, university, or art school. The deadline for applying is May 4, 2017. The purpose of the SYV Arts Association scholarship program is to reward qualified students who have shown an active interest in the visual arts and to help defray their college expenses. Selection of winners is based on art academic achievement, the desire for future involvement in the art field, and community service. Applicants must submit a portfolio of seven pieces of original artwork to be judged by professional artists selected by the Scholarship Committee of the Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association. Applicants must also complete a 2017 SYV Arts Association Scholarship application form and submit the required supporting documents. Interested students can get the 2017 Scholarship Application form and directions for submitting their portfolios from the art department of their high school, or can download them from the SYV Arts Association website, www.santaynezvalleyarts.org, or can request them from Santa Ynez Valley Arts, PO Box 762, Los Olivos, CA 93441. The Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association Scholarship Program was started in 1990 and since then has made awards to 54 students to date. The program is funded by donations from members, supporters of student arts, and local foundation grants. Applicants or parents who have questions or wish to request more information regarding the Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association and its Scholarship Program can also email info@santaynezvalleyarts.org.

WILDLING MUSEUM HOSTS ITS 14TH ANNUAL SPRING BARBECUE The Wildling Museum is holding their fourteenth annual Spring Barbecue Fundraiser on Sunday, April 30, 2017 at the beautiful Rancho San Antonio in Buellton. With a history as rich and diverse as the beautiful valley it sits in, Rancho San Antonio was originally part of Rancho San Carlos de Jonata - a 26,000-acre Mexican land grant given to Joaquin Carillo and Jose Maria Covarrubias that encompassed present day Solvang and Buellton. Today, the ranch still operates and maintains its historic charm. New this year, the Wilding will be honoring Jan Hamber, who has devoted her life to condor conservation, with the Wilderness Spirit Award. Spend the afternoon at this historic location learning about the birds she has helped to save from extinction. Guests will enjoy beer poured by M. Special Brewery and wine provided by notable local vineyards, such as Buttonwood, Babcock, Hilliard Bruce, Kalyra, Mosby, and Rusack. They can also bid on exciting raffle prizes and silent auction items, including original artwork, tickets to Disneyland, a hot air ballooning experience, and much more. A delicious barbecue dinner will be provided by Robert Santoro’s Santa Ynez BBQ, while guests enjoy the toe-tapping music of the T-Bone Ramblers! The Spring Barbecue is the perfect event to enjoy an afternoon with friends new and old and support a local nonprofit organization dedicated to using art to awaken a passion for nature and wilderness conservation. Tickets begin at $125 a person. In addition to the main event, there will be an exclusive VIP reception, where guests will get the chance to mingle with honoree Jan Hamber while enjoying specialty drinks provided by Wandering Dog Wine Bar and appetizers. These VIP tickets are $250 a person and include entry to main event. Proceeds from ticket sales support the Wildling’s mission to inspire our community and visitors to enjoy, value, and conserve wildlife and natural areas through art. Limited number of tickets available, purchase by calling 805-6868315, visiting the Museum (1511-B Mission Drive, Solvang), or online; visit www.wildlingmuseum.org. Exhibit: Nature's Wonders Featuring Liz Tallakson & Sue Johnson Through April 30th, 2017 Liz Tallakson is both a watercolor and pastel artist who specializes in the wonders and beauty of nature. Her watercolors range from simple landscapes of local and far-ranging vistas to vibrant florals. She uses a variety of techniques to achieve the essence of her experiences with what she sees as the amazing natural world around us. In contrast, her pastels are realistic representations of how she sees nature with an emphasis on landscapes and our interaction with them. Having grown up in Montana and having hiked the Sierras for many years, mountains are a particularly dominant part of her work. Nature's Wonders infuse all of her art. Sue Jonhson is a plein air oil painter living on the beautiful Central Coast of California. She is always ready to head out on a beautiful morning with easel and paint looking for the perfect scene to paint!

www.thecgallery.com. 466 Bell St. Los Alamos. CA. 93440 connie@thecgallery.com 805-344-3807 The C Gallery in Los Alamos is honored to feature the well-collected oil painter, Debra Sievers and ceramic artist, Lindy Kern in a show entitled, “Ocean in Abstraction.” “Ocean in Abstraction” offers the public a glimpse of their artistic dialogue with the ocean. Debra Sievers, a native Californian, is formally trained at the Philadelphia College of Art, and continued in New York at the Art Students League and National Academy of Design. A life long lover of the ocean, Debra was inspired to paint the relationships of light, movement, and water when she moved to the Central Coast in 2011. She divides her time between Shell Beach and Oceanside. Debra's art is widely collected and includes the Hilton Corporation, the Del Mar Racetrck and Shirley MacClaine as some of her collectors. Loews Resorts and Hotels and the Atlantis Resort-Dubai add to her partial list of collectors. Her work can be found in resorts, casinos, private collections, and in galleries. She has been a featured artist at New York's Art Expo, and her paintings have been on many magazine covers. Now, she'll be sharing her work at The C Gallery. “I am honored to show this caliber of artist here at The C Gallery, (pause)... in Los Alamos. Her work is both abstracted and contemplative, and her collection offers a unified body of work,” says C Gallery Director, Connie Rohde. Debra's collection for this show has all been painted in 2017. She says herself, of the collection, “ The work shoved me out of the way and (practically) painted themselves. All titles are acupuncture point names, pointing to the added meaning and potential for healing by the paintings,” says Sievers. Paired with Debra Sievers is well-known and well-loved Lindy Kern, ceramic artist from Santa Ynez Valley celebrating her eighth decade. Her collection features sea life creatures that have been abstracted and seemingly swim in air. Though several pieces look like coral, they actually are carved works in clay, highly textured. “Lindy evokes the beauty of life under water, both primitive and complicated simultaneously,” says Director, Rohde. Lindy shows widely in Santa Barbara County, and had shown at The C Gallery some years ago with her Women of Spirit. “ Lindy is no stranger to reduced and sensitive renderings of life forms, “ comments Rohde. Currently Lindy is exhibiting in Carpinteria at the Palm Loft Gallery. 8

THE LOS OLIVOS WINE MERCHANT & CAFE 2870 Grand Ave, Los Olivos

Art Without Borders Exhibit: Barbara & Floyd Snyder: Peace and Tranquility Through May 4, 2017

This talented married couple have each inspired the other’s creative photography over time and their work shows delightfully well together in this exhibit. Each artist works both with original photography and digitally enhanced original photography, largely concentrating on scenes from nature that they feel bring an experience of peace and tranquility to the viewer. The beautiful images on view provide an engaging viewing encounter, and pieces are available for purchase by those who may wish to acquire a work that provides a lyrical commentary on nature’s many gifts.

Floyd Snyder, Strawberry Fields Forever

Each artist has worked in very interesting career fields that over time changed and evolved into a concentration on artistic endeavors. They have owned and operated picture frame studios and art galleries and their backgrounds have informed their art and encouraged them to give attention to their own creativity. They have much to share with those who have the opportunity to view their work. Barbara Snyder, Lone Cypress

Coming Soon • Art Without Borders Exhibit: Patricia Stalter: Wine and Art May 4 – July 6, 2017

A new exhibit of creative digital art that showcases the area in and around Los Olivos will be shown at Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café, from May 4 to July 6. Artist Patricia Stalter has a long history using digital photography that she transforms with image editing software, including Photoshop and Corel Painter. The resulting images make it clear that this process has become a medium for creating fine art. Patricia is active in local art organizations and her work is regularly hung at area galleries and in business establishments, with some featured at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara. Twenty-plus years of experience with digital photography, plus inspiration from various classes have informed her creative work and process. More of her work can be seen on her website: www.patricia-stalter.artstwebsites.com . Patricia Stalter, Los Alamos Gas

This exhibit is one of a continuing series of shows made possible by the commitment of the Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café to showcase local art and artists. Santa Ynez Valley Art Association (formerly the Artists Guild SYV), a nonprofit arts organization with over thirty years of history in the area, coordinates and manages the “art without borders” installation in cooperation with the Café. A portion of art sales benefits the organization, and these collaborative efforts - a way to keep art alive and accessible in the Santa Ynez Valley. More about some of the Participating Artists: Joellen Chrones, Glass My company name is Sugarless Treats, non-fattening glass, as a play on words and at the time I could not have sugar. I fell in love with making glass objects when someone recommended that I make my own beads, I’ve been hooked ever since. I try to make functional pieces that people can put to good use. All the glass is food safe and dishwasher safe, but no microwave please (some metallic colors would pop off). I like a whimsical subject, right now I am doing a lot of birds. But I also do fruit, vegetables, other animals, flowers, etc. I also do wall hangings of different subjects. I love color and sometimes get pretty crazy. Justin Pearson Born and raised in Colorado, Justin Pearson has always been intrigued by woodworking. Self-taught on the lathe, Justin creates bowls, platters, vases, and planters using only wood that has fallen naturally. He has created relationships with many locals who will notify him of trees falling due to weather or disease and allow Justin will give them a new life in a new form. His walnut pieces come from the trees the Franciscan priests planted when they founded Mission Santa Inés. The shape his pieces take are dictated by the wood itself and can morph as the wood is turned. For more information visit: www.SantaYnezValleyArts.org/second-saturday-artisans
