ON THE COVER Michelle Ellis, Ocean Waves in Abstract, Acrylic/mixed media. This piece won the Juror's Choice in this month's award show "Motion" in the Guild Room @ Gallery Los Olivos. Guest judge Esther Jacobsen Bates, Executive Director of the Elverhøj Museum of History and Art, says "As a viewer, I enjoy the challenge of abstract art and how the take-away can be highly subjective. I was captivated by the physical movement of paint across the canvas and the artistic manipulation of the media. The glints of shiny gold caught my eye and carried my attention across the canvas with stops to note textural variations and application techniques. The overall feeling of the piece spoke to me of motion, of the artist at work and in the subject matter." As an “intuitive artist” most of Michelle's abstract paintings are created from instinct, without reference material or consideration of the final outcome. She paints intuitively using energetic, spontaneous brushstrokes, building up and blending thin layers of paint, mostly on textured canvases. The process is visceral, emotional and all consuming. Earth Pigments and Rock Art Presented by Karen Osland
Rock art is part of our common heritage, regardless of our social, cultural, religious or economic status; the sites and the images they contain were created as part of daily life in the past. These visual expressions of mankind’s ideas are found worldwide. Recent archaeological discoveries suggest that people have been processing earth pigments into paint for over 77,000 years. A paint making tool kit was discovered within Blombos cave, South Africa, it contained red ochre and it is at least 77,000 years old. A 40,000-year-old hand stencil, outlined in red, found on a cave wall in Indonesia. Kakadu, an Australian Word Heritage site, also contains paintings created 20000 ago to as late as 1986. The same type of earth pigments and color palettes were used to create the rock art found within the Santa Barbara region. Santa Ynez Valley arts member, Karen Osland will present an illustrated lecture of on some of these worldwide rock art sites including those found in Santa Barbara County. A UCSB Graduate, Karen has been an Archaeologist for over 30 years and was an Environmental Planner at Vandenberg Air Force Base for 18 years. She has been teaching classes on basketry and on the ethnobotany of native California plants for over many years. She also leads interpretative hikes emphasizing how the California Indians managed their environment. Attendees can bring finger food appetizers to share and/or beverage of choice if they like. SYV Arts Public Art Salons occur on the 1st Tuesday of every month and are free and open to the public.

Celebrating 25 years of excellence this month-long juried exhibit will have the theme of “Silver” evoking the traditional anniversary designation for GLO artists to interpret and create a work of art for this special show. Visitors are encouraged to vote on their favorite piece for a “People’s Choice” award. Member artists work in a varied array of genres and mediums from canvas, to paper, fabric, wood, stone and metal. At the opening reception light refreshments will be served and local wines are featured. It’s a fun way to meet, mix and mingle with the artists who can answer your questions about their work and reminisce about the humble beginnings of GLO above an old hardware store. ‘A Day in the Country’ is a town-wide celebration now in its 38th year. You can enjoy the diversity of artists and their work at GLO all year long but make it a point to visit for the 25th Anniversary. 5

Marilyn Dover Benson, (left) Ready for the Weekend. (top rt) Hwy 30-A Gulf Coast, FL. (bottom rt) Historic Mail Pouch Barn by Bishop's Peak, San Luis Obispo
An exhibit of creative paintings by local artist Marilyn Dover Benson will be shown at Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café, through September 7. The artist notes that the show encompasses all the subjects she loves to paint. It includes lovely Central Coast scenery (including some well-known landmarks), while bikes and boats symbolize fun and adventure. While Marilyn is British born and educated, she has been in the area for a significant time and has shown and sold her art locally for many years. She has collectors worldwide and is the recipient of many arts awards in juried shows and events.
Sheila Krausse: California Dreamin' September 7 to November 2, 2017
The oils and acrylic paintings reflect the artist’s long engagement with images of the beautiful California central coast. Her painting style combines influences of both impressionism and realism, and her use of stirring color and strong texture are a stimulating experience for the viewer. This new “California Dreamin’” show is a great opportunity for visitors to see a beautiful body of work, which is also available for purchase. Sheila Krausse, California Dreamin'
This exhibit is one of a continuing series of shows made possible by the commitment of the Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café to showcase local art and artists. Santa Ynez Valley Art Association, a nonprofit arts organization with over thirty years of history in the area, coordinates and manages the “art without borders” installation in cooperation with the Café. A portion of art sales benefits the organization, and these collaborative efforts - a way to keep art alive and accessible in the Santa Ynez Valley. Artist Demonstration with sculptor Neil Goodman & Closing Reception Saturday August 19 • 3 to 5 pm Demo & dialogue in the gallery environment Refreshments Free Goodman, whose work is on display in the Elverhøj summer exhibition Looking West, has experienced success and acclaim as a sculptor. His abstract artworks are mostly in bronze, ranging in size from table-top to a monumental scale. The tools of Goodman’s trade include a sturdy welder, a grinder, clamps, a hoist, and a good set of hand tools. He sculpts with both the forms and the space of spaces that exist within and around them. It takes a lot of muscle to produce the large sculptures. The process is strenuous and labor intensive.

Robert Salazar
Robert Salazar is sure to impress with his intricate origami folding. Robert Salazar is an origami artist, scientist, and engineer whose mission is to promote peace, environmental sustainability, and exploration through his work. He started designing and folding origami 17 years ago after reading the story of Sadako and the Thousand Cranes. Since then, he’s designed and folded hundreds of intricate feathered birds, endangered wildlife, and surreal art nouveau expressions, each from a single uncut sheet of paper. As the founder of Origami for an Interdependent World, he’s partnered with wildlife conservancies and environmental movements to spread awareness and fundraise through origami works. At NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, he designed the origami patterns for NASA’s Starshade, and continues to design large origami deployable solar reflectors for illuminating the Moon’s darkest, iciest craters for exploration.

Another exciting event for August is the gallery's featured artist show "Pathways Edward Heinitz, Going Fishing" and Promenades", showcasing the exceptional paintings of Neil Andersson. "For me the landscape is a source of incredible beauty--a place of rest, escape and harmony," says Andersson, whose style features realistic detail softened by skillfully executed atmosphere and surroundings. While I was amazed with every painting, my favorite is a small oil painting entitled "Meandering Path, Beattie Park," a locale familiar to most who live in Lompoc. Please join the artist at the reception on Saturday, August 5th from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and enjoy the paintings and refreshments. The People's Choice award for July was "Ocean Blue," a small (but powerful) acrylic painting by Trish Campbell. Congratulations on a dramatic little piece, Trish. There are some really new and interesting works in the main gallery this month. Mikki Alhart's large acrylic painting "Down Deep" features a somewhat whimsical peek at the underwater world. Jane Kametani's photo "Heading Out to Sea" and Neil Andersson, Meandering Path in Beattie Park Jim McIntire's "Evening Watch: Bass Harbor Headlight" round out the nautical feel. I really like Ed Heinitz' watercolor "Going Fishing," and Carol Oliveira's "A Memory," both of which evoke fond memories of spending time with family. Cypress Gallery has many gift items made by member artists and artisan crafts persons. You'll find a multitude of hand-crafted items priced affordably: small original paintings and prints featuring La Purisima Mission, Lompoc scenes, animals and florals, as well as jewelry, glass pieces, pottery, gourds, textile items and hand-crafted Lompoc souvenirs. The Family Tree
Watercolor& other art by Judith Grames Lyra August 29 – September 24, 2017 It is said that life happens when you are making other plans! So it was when I took a trip across the country this year intent on finding my mother's birth record in Ontario, Canada, and ended up taking a detour to Alexandria, Virginia. My daughter, Carolyn accompanied me on this journey as she was between semesters at the University in Colorado and there was the chance that we would see her son(my grandson) and his fiancée in Virginia. As it turned our, he was suddenly taken to the hospital, suffering from a very serious illness, lymphoma, and we arrived in time to give him family support during his first round of chemo, and consequent surgery. The exhibit reflects this odyssey and is dedicated to Ian Longmire, my grandson.

We are proud to be able to provide opportunities for artists to show and sell their work through the Guild Room, 2nd Saturday Artisan shows, and solo exhibits in partnership with local businesses. Santa Ynez Valley Arts offers student scholarships to advance the education of graduating seniors who plan to attend college. And, the organization offers Art Salons, which encourages like-minded people to meet and become connected to the Arts community.

Santa Ynez Valley Arts is uniquely situated to be a unifying voice for the Arts. Our programs reach into all of the different cities and townships in the area. Because our website and publications are concentrated on the Arts, we are a valuable resource to the community and visitors who want to easily find information about the cultural opportunities in the Valley.
