Opening Reception: Saturday, February 18 4:30 – 6:00 PM.
A pre-reception interactive gallery walk with the artists begins at 4:00 PM. Refreshments will be served; there is no charge for admission.
Debuting February 18 at Elverhøj Museum of History and Art is “Recuérdame/Remember Me,” a new art exhibition featuring artists Luis Ramirez and Rosalie Lopez. The work on the display is the union of two different Latino experiences focusing on the remembrance and veneration of people and places from the artists’ past and present. Both artists are Mexican American; Luis represents a first generation rural immigrant perspective and Rosalie represents a second-generation Chicana urban perspective. They use paintings, prints, and installations to create experiences that encourage interaction and connection with the viewer. Luis Ramirez’s paintings and installation art analyze the intimate experience of family within the culture of California’s agricultural community. Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, Luis grew up in rural Santa Ynez. He studied at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in China and CSU Long Beach where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing and Painting. Says Ramirez of his paintings for this exhibit: “These are individuals and spaces I have interacted with in my immigrant experience and in my agriculture career. The artworks serve as icons to personify, venerate, and remember.”
Luis Ramirez, Cara 4, oil and charcoal on canvas
Rosalie Lopez is a conceptual artist who primarily uses printmaking, papel picado (paper cutting), and installation artworks in the form of contemporary nicho/ retablo style to relay experiences of survival, loss, and hope. Born and raised in Gardena, CA, her upbringing and the realities of loss and violence influenced her values on culture and community. She earned dual BFA degrees in graphic design and printmaking and a MFA in printmaking and has exhibited at the Mexican Cultural Institute of Los Angeles, the Indianapolis Art Center in Indiana, and the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque, NM. Exhibit programming includes a Painting Demonstration with Luis Ramirez on Saturday, March 18, 2 to 4 pm. At 4 pm there will be Conversation with the Artist followed by a social hour. On Saturday, May 6 Elverhøj will host “Club de Cultura” from 5 to 7 pm. It will be a cultural cocktail of art, food, music, specialty drinks and fun onenight interactive happenings. All events are offered with free admission. Elverhøj Museum of History and Art, is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Suggested donation is $5. For more information, phone (805) 686-1211 or visit www.elverhoj.org. The exhibition will remain on view through May 21, 2017.

WILDLING MUSEUM OF ART & NATURE 1511 Mission Dr., Solvang www.wildlingmuseum.org
Opening Reception: Friday, February 24 3:00 – 5:00 PM. EXHIBIT RUNS: FEB. 24 – MAY 29, 2017 The Wildling Museum of Art & Nature is proud to present its newest exhibition Private Collections of the Santa Barbara Region, comprised of artworks borrowed from the private collections of its members. Not only will visitors be able to experience artworks that are not on public display, but they will get an inside look into how and why collectors choose their pieces.
Nichole Strasburg, Local Sky
The art we choose to hang in our homes not only lives with us, but inspires, comforts, and challenges us. In organizing this exhibit, Executive Director, Stacey OtteDemangate visited homes throughout the Santa Barbara County and was delighted in seeing so many artworks of our local area. She was met with unique stories of how a piece was acquired and why it was so special to them. Some collectors create a cohesive collecting theme surrounding a particular style, genre, or subject matter. Other collectors choose works based on their personal ties with an artist or because pieces have been handed down from generation to generation. While there was a true diversity of collections, a common thread that ran through them all was the passion for collecting landscapes of the region they call home - the Santa Barbara region.
The artworks collected by Wildling members are not only of outstanding quality, but a fantastic testament to the uniqueness of the area we call home. From historic to contemporary, these selections display the hills, coastlines, missions, and natural monuments that we have grown to love. The works capture a special sense of place and time, and expose the deep and abiding importance that nature plays in our lives. The Wildling Museum has announced that trees of the tri-counties will be the theme for their Annual NaturePhotography Competition in 2017. From their bark and leaves to their ecosystems and inhabitants, each tree is unique. The tri-counties (Santa Barbara Michael Miner, After the Fire, County, San Luis Obispo County and Ventura Part 2, photograph County) are home to a diverse range of tree species that make our landscape beautiful. Explore the life cycle, those who call it home, the threats they face, and their individuality. The Wildling wants photographers to get creative with the theme and discover trees in new and interesting ways. Get up close and personal – observe form, texture, shape. How are they rooted in the land? Who lives in their branches? As a complement to the oak habitat mural by John Iwerks, the adult competition will be on view in the second floor gallery and the junior competition will be featured in the Barbara Goodall Education Center. Awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd will be awarded in both categories. Entries for the adult and junior competitions are due May 1, 2017. For more information about the competition, visit www.wildlingmuseum.org. 6
Sunday, February 12 at 1pm, Jeff Hecker demonstrates his techniques and answers questions in the Wildling parking lot. At 3pm join Ken Frye, Victor Di Novi, and Robin Corell, moderated by the exhibit organizer, Dave Seymour. Each artisan will give an inside look into how they create their very unique works, the techniques they use, and answer questions. Not only will they share their knowledge of woodworking, but they will also discuss the wood they choose and why.

Exhibit: Lines of Poem Through March 15, 2017 For more information about the "Lines of a Poem" exhibit or The C Gallery connie@thecgallery • 805-344-3807 • www.thecgallery.com The show entitled “Lines of a Poem,” emphasizes non-verbal language expressed through spontaneous marks. Rohde shares the exhibit with sculptor, Albert McCurdy. The “Lines of a Poem” exhibit had its genesis from an art exploration question by Rohde, “If I change the size and shape of the surface on which I work, will the spontaneous, intuitive marks change?” The answer was a resounding “Yes” with long flowing, calligraphic marks that resemble calligraphy. Some pieces’ marks resonate with Aborigine art, highlighting dots, dashes and a kind of mapping. In two pieces there are triptychs which tell a distilled story, a poem or sorts, hence the title of the show, “Lines of a Poem.” The show is fleshed out with personal intuitive exploration and meditations.
Connie Rohde, Poetess
McCurdy, a constant art companion of Rohde and The C Gallery, designed sculptural works to accompany the thrust of the theme. Some of his works include Bertoia-esque sound sculptures, which seem to take the viewer to the same emotional and intellectual place as Rohde’s visuals. The centerpiece, “Point of Nothingness,” inspired by the writings of Thomas Merton, journeys to “Here,” the material world, and to “There,” the “Other Places.” It is accompanied by McCurdy’s minimal tinted glass monolith, which leads the way to quiet thought and stillness, to nothingness.
Albert McCurdy, Flowing River

THE LOS OLIVOS WINE MERCHANT & CAFE 2870 Grand Ave, Los Olivos
Art Without Borders Exhibit: Sharon Foster: Coastal Beauty Through March 2, 2017
Local artist Sharon Foster is on view at the Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café. The work is an engaging viewing experience, and the pieces are available for purchase by art loving collectors who may wish to acquire an inspiring work of art. Sharon Foster is a photographic artist and long time resident of Santa Maria. She captures stunning photographs as she wanders through the hills and valleys of the Central Coast, seeking just the right play of light and shadow for her images. Although nature landscapes and architecture are her current interests, Sharon is always looking through her lens for artistic inspiration. Because the artist has developed her gift in the art form of digital photography over the years, she is able to change her masterful photographs into emotionally stirring works of art. Each piece is digitally enhanced so the majesty of God’s creation, that is so alive in nature, is reflected in a fresh expression of joy and wonder.
Sharon Foster, Coastal Beauty
Art Without Borders Exhibit: Barbara & Floyd Snyder March 2 – May 4, 2017
Local artists Barbara and Floyd Snyder will be on view at the Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café. Each artist works both with original photography and digitally enhanced original photography, largely concentrating on scenes from nature that they feel bring an experience of peace and tranquility to the viewer. The beautiful images on view provide an engaging viewing encounter, and pieces are available for purchase by those who may wish to acquire a work that provides a lyrical commentary on nature’s many gifts.
