ON THE COVER
Barbara Snyder, Longhorn Abstract, digitized photo on canvas. Barbara Snyder lives on the Central Coast of California. As a California native she has always felt the allure of the great variety of natural features offered in her home state. Whether it is seascapes, vineyards, desert, mountains, forest and all that in between, the pursuit of 'fresh, natural and alive' subjects and scenes has inspired Barbara's work. Barbara's work offers a simplistic, rich view of life. Her work has been acclaimed as sensitive photography dedicated to bringing otherwise little noticed scenes to the public eye. Her images hold the viewer with their sheer beauty and visual appeal that provide the lyrical commentary of nature's many gifts.

Dear Readers: As you may, or may not, know, the SYV Arts Association (SYVAA) has struggled the past few years to maintain enough volunteers to fill chairperson positions as well as board positions. Despite our best and continuing efforts, we have not found enough members to fill the SYV Arts board positions or chair positions for 2018. At a Board meeting in December the current board members voted to remain on the Board until a resolution could be found. In January, after reviewing all the options, the Board met and decided to dissolve the SYVAA. The Board made this conscious decision about SYV Art’s future to be able to still offer current SYV Art's members many of the membership benefits they now have but with other viable organizations. To that effect, SYV Arts has met with the Lompoc Valley Art Association (LVAA) who has agreed to offer membership to our current members, with the ability to show and sell in the beautiful Cypress Gallery, in addition to the other perks of membership. They will continue the eZine, as it provides a valuable service to our community and artists in relating cultural events in our area. The SYV Arts facebook page will shift its posts to LVAA's Cypress Gallery facebook page, and we encourage you to go and "like" their page so that you won't miss out on current arts-related events. Following IRS guidelines for a Voluntary Dissolution of a Non-Profit, the Board explored alliances with other arts focused non-profits, and with a majority vote of our members, we are pleased to report that in addition to the Lompoc Valley Arts Association, we will be able to distribute our assets among two other deserving local non-profit organizations: The Wildling Museum of Art & Nature and The Elverhoj Museum of History & Art. We regret that the SYVAA must dissolve. It has benefited so many talented local artists over the years. However, we cannot continue without an active membership to fill the positions needed. We greatly appreciate meeting and working with you all over the years and wish you the very best. With our best regards for our members continued success, we welcome your continued support, friendship and many talents in our arts community as we move forward. Respectfully, The Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association, Board of Directors Christopher Brown, President Kathy Badrak, Treasurer Anne Miller, Secretary

ART WITHOUT BORDERS EXHIBIT
Sharon Foster: California Beautiful
Sharon Foster, City Lights
Through March 1, 2018
Sharon Foster, Coastal Beauty
The Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Cafe 2870 Grand Ave, Los Olivos
An exhibit of inspiring art by Sharon Foster will be on view at the Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café. This new show is a great opportunity for visitors to see an impressive body of work, which is also available for purchase. Sharon Foster is a photographic artist and longtime resident of Santa Maria, California. She captures stunning photographs as she wanders through the hills and valleys of the central coast, seeking just the right play of light and shadow for her images. As she has developed her gift in this art form over the years, she is able to change her masterful photographs into emotionally stirring works of art. Each piece is digitally enhanced so the majesty of God’s creation that is so alive in nature, is reflected in a fresh expression of joy and wonder. This exhibit is one of a continuing series of shows made possible by the commitment of the Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café to showcase local art and artists. Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association, a nonprofit arts organization with over thirty years of history in the area, coordinates and manages the “art without borders” installation in cooperation with the Café. A portion of art sales benefits the organization, and these collaborative efforts - a way to keep art alive and accessible in the Santa Ynez Valley.

The wildfires that raged through the Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo Counties this past year have left our landscape blackened and desolate. Though it may seem that nature has succumbed to the fire, it perseveres and regenerates. Wildflowers and greenery spring from beneath the ash and debris in a display of hope and rebirth. Photographers are encouraged to capture examples of nature’s magical ability to regenerate and thrive in the aftermath of fire. This year’s guest judge will be photographer Bill Dewey, whose aerial photographs are on view in the Oak Gallery through March 12, 2018. The Wildling wants to remind photographers not to trespass on private property or enter into areas where access is prohibited or dangerous. Please abide by law enforcement and posted signs. There is an Adult Category, 18 years and older, and a Junior Category, 17 years and younger. For more information and entry forms go to: www.wildlingmuseum.org/photography-competition/

THE CYPRESS GALLERY
119 E. Cypress Ave, Lompoc • Open Tue–Sun, 12-4PM www.lompocvalleyartassociation.com
"A Walk Through the Cypress" February 2018 • By Terry Taylor The Cypress Gallery in Lompoc is undergoing some renovations and is closed for most of January. It's February and the Cypress Gallery has reopened with beautiful new stained concrete floors in the main gallery areas and ceramic tile in the other rooms. A group of dedicated LVAA members scrubbed and dusted and the Gallery is ready to shine. Please join us for a "reveal" reception on Saturday, February 10th from 3-5 p.m. and enjoy some wine, snacks and our new look. SOMETHING FISHY: When you come to the reception or the next time you drop into the Cypress, get your information and wooden fish to participate in our "Something Fishy" project, open to the entire community, including kids. You'll have the chance, for $5 each, to decorate/paint/embellish your fish (or fishes) to hang them in the special show in May 2018. There's still time to get your loved ones and best friends something for Valentine's Day, including themed wall-hangings, cards, glass pieces, jewelry and other gift items. People's Choice Award for December went to Vicki Andersen for her acrylic painting "Point Conception Lighthouse." Vicki's boldly colored canvasses are a favorite of many people; congratulations, Vicki! Member artists had lots of time in January, when the gallery was closed, to create some new, delightful pieces. Mickel Naccarato's "Beach Walk" is a large piece in acrylic and canvas with a plexi glass and shell "shadow box." I love the soft nautical hues of this painting. Trish Campbell's "Seagull Landing," painted in crisp blues and white, made me feel I could hear the birds call as they came to rest on the rocks in the ocean. Diane Atturio's watercolor and mixed media piece entitled "Red Freesia" is a bright spot of color.
Mikel Naccarato, Beach Walk
As you browse, remember to look at all the ceramic and glass pieces on display; I especially like Joellen Chrones "Sunflower" plate. There's lots of photography, too, from Tom Chrones, Jane Kametani and Lynda Schiff.
Make Cypress Gallery your gift shop! You will find a fine selection of small items, Lompoc souvenirs and greeting cards for all occasions, as well as affordable paintings and prints. Lompoc Valley Art Association meets the first Tuesday of most every month and meetings are open to the public.
