2017 SYV VISITORS GUIDE

www.visitsyv.com/santa-ynez-valley-destination-guide/

The Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association is excited to announce the July program for its free “Art Salon” series, featuring Chris Pavlov providing an intriguing talk on “Art – A Neuro-Philosophical Reflection”. The Art Salon event will be held on Tuesday, July 18, at the Pavlov Art Gallery, 1608 Copenhagen Drive, Suite C, Solvang, from 6–8 pm. This artist talk will endeavor to answer questions such as: 1. When did Art emerge? 2. What is art and which areas of the brain are activated when experiencing/creating art? 3. The purpose of art? 4. Differences and similarities between artistic and scientific thought processes. Chris Pavlov opened the Pavlov Art Gallery in 2007, where he displays his own original artwork and fine art prints. Pavlov's work is inspired by his interest in psychology and philosophy, and is in fact a continuum of his studies in these areas. He has been heavily influenced by the precision of science and puzzled by the complexity of the human psyche since childhood. His parents, a pediatrician and a neuropsychiatrist, played a large role in this development and have spurred him into a life-long pursuit of knowledge. Pavlov moved away from his home country of Macedonia at the age of eighteen, and began his career as a selftaught artist in Austria. He studied the German language at the University of Salzburg and was involved with several art galleries including his own, Am Gewölbe. After moving to the United Sates in 2004, Pavlov earned his B.A. in psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara and his M.A. in philosophy through an Erasmus graduate program at the University of Sofia, Bulgaria. Currently, he continues to develop new artistic techniques that translate the archetypes of the unconscious mind to a language understandable to the conscious mind. The Art Salon “mixers” are fun opportunities to create and sustain a connected, inspiring, supportive, and active art community. This is a great way to meet up with others interested in the arts and become more connected with the arts community within the Santa Ynez Valley in a casual and friendly environment. Art Salons are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. 1

Finding Jewels on the Beach by Anne C. Miller

“Wow, look at that! were my words the first time I saw this photo. It looks to me like a treasure trove of jewels. I recognize coral, quartz, crystals and feldspar. Would it surprise you to know it is ordinary sand, but seen in an extra-ordinary way. What you see is sand from the beach photographed under a microscope. What this amazing photography process uncovers is that every single grain of sand is unique. Not only that, but every single grain on every single beach is different. Sand is formed by the erosion of granite rock from mountains. Mountains are naturally eroded away by water, rain, ice and so forth. Mountains continue to be eroded until they become grains of sand. Mother Nature naturally makes magic before our very eyes! Many of us comb the coastal beaches whenever we can to experience the gorgeous scenery, salty air, powerful Photo by Garu Greenberg water and serene sea life. If you love the beach, you know first hand of the gifts mother nature bestows on us. You now know that the sand you thought just squished between your toes is filled with tiny microscopic jewels. Knowing that, you might try and hunt for treasures that you can readily see. There are larger versions of the same jewel filled grains of sand and produced by the same natural mountain erosion. Shells, sea glass, moonstone, jade, quartz, jasper and agate are there for keeping and come in lots of visible shapes, sizes, textures and brightness of tone. I often come home with some of these finds in my pack and wash them off and inspect them further. Many get discarded, but a few of the ones that I feel warrant it, get worked over by my specialized tools.

Gems and jewels I found on the beach in various stages of work and design.

Diamond encrusted blades on trim saws, and special polishing wheels that start with a rough grit and move down to a finer grit are used to shape and add shine. If these gorgeous finds don’t crack or break during the tooling process, they will end up in jewelry I make. Working with these natural elements, along with cutting and polishing, enhances their natural inner beauty. By incorporating them in my jewelry design, I create one-of-akind pieces. I pair these natural finished elements with mixed metals like silver, copper and bronze. I like to work with metals that will artistically contrast with the stones. For instance, warm toned stones look best with the cool color and smooth texture of silver. Cooler toned stones often come to life best with softer and malleable copper. Bronze is quite hard, stable and sturdy, so sometimes I used it to add stability to a softer or misshapen stone. Smoky quartz, silver, copper

Color and texture are the most important elements of my jewelry designs. The jewels and treasures I find on the beach blend naturally to this type of work. I also try to achieve organic, clean designs and shy away from something with too much bling. Contemporary, unique and quality elements are all a part of the design process. Some customers bring me their own finds or treasures from the beach and I pattern a piece around it. Natural beauty coming to life in a piece you can wear makes you naturally beautiful. I invite you to visit me at 2nd Saturday Artisans, monthly at the Los Olivos Grange, and shop for what speaks naturally to you. You can also find me on my Facebook page – A C Miller Designs Art Inspired Jewelry and see my entire 2017 show schedule. Please shop for a gift for yourself or a special present for someone you appreciate. If you have a special found treasure that you would like made into a jewelry piece, please contact me, and we can design it together.

A new exhibit of creative paintings by local artist Marilyn Dover Benson will be shown at Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café, from July 6 to September 7. It includes lovely Central Coast scenery (including some well-known landmarks), while bikes and boats symbolize fun and adventure.

While Marilyn is British born and educated, she has been in the area for a significant time and has shown and sold her art locally for many years. She has collectors worldwide and is the recipient of many arts awards in juried shows and events.

This exhibit is one of a continuing series of shows made possible by the commitment of the Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café to showcase local art and artists. Santa Ynez Valley Art Association, a nonprofit arts organization with over thirty years of history in the area, coordinates and manages the “art without borders” installation in cooperation with the Café. A portion of art sales benefits the organization, and these collaborative efforts - a way to keep art alive and accessible in the Santa Ynez Valley. THE CYPRESS GALLERY

119 E. Cypress Ave, Lompoc • Open Tue–Sun, 12-4PM & 12–5PM Daylight Savings www.lompocvalleyartassociation.com "A Walk Through the Cypress" July 2017 • By Terry Taylor "One flag, one land, one heart, one hand, one nation for evermore!" This month we celebrate our nation's 241st birthday and this quote from Oliver Wendell Holmes, reminds us of who we need to be. It's never been easy and it's never been perfect, but we know freedom to be the gem in our crown and we continue to strive to keep it there by upholding the ideals of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. Happy Birthday, America! In keeping with this patriotic theme, the front room in the Gallery is all "Red, White and Blue." My favorite pieces in this gathering are "Mother," a charming primitive oil portrait of a saluting woman in uniform, by Julia Nash and a rather pop art drawing (pun intended) of a red and white striped box of popcorn entitled "Admit One," rendered in colored pencil by Mary Whittemore. Tom Chrones, photographer, has entered an action racing photo of a red, white and blue motorcycle and sidecar called "Sidecar." Tonya Romano Schultz's acrylic collage she calls "My Country," is colorful and abstract. The People's Choice award for July was "Trudy Morris' "Bend in the River," done in acrylics. Congratulations, Trudy; your bright landscape is full of color and calls to many of us. The main parts of the gallery are filled with skillfully done paintings, drawings, photographs and ceramics done by our member artists. Vicki Andersen's acrylic painting "Santa Barbara Shadows" plays with light and shadow on palm trees and Spanish styled architecture. Julia Nash, Mother I'm drawn to Carol Oliveira's dramatic oil painting "Precipice," and I can't help staring at the vibrant blues and whites in the jagged mountains. Gil Andersen's Vicki Andersen, Santa Barbara Shadows handmade clay piece entitled "Jalama" is created with 12 tiles, painted and fired and Ann Brink's ceramic vases and bowls dot the space.

Cypress Gallery has many gift items made by member artists and artisan crafts persons. You'll find a multitude of hand-crafted items priced affordably: small original paintings and prints featuring La Purisima Mission, Lompoc scenes, animals and florals, as well as jewelry, glass pieces, pottery, gourds, textile items and hand-crafted Lompoc souvenirs. In addition, there is an extensive selection of greeting cards for all occasions. Are you an artist, photographer or artisan craft person? Consider membership the Lompoc Valley Art Association. Applications are available at the Gallery and on our web site lompocart.com. The next general meeting will be August 1st, 6:30 p.m. at Stone Pine Hall, 200 South H Street, Lompoc. Please join us for refreshments and an artistic presentation. Cypress Gallery is operated by the members of the Lompoc Valley Art Association and is located at 119 East Cypress Avenue, Lompoc. Hours: Tuesday through Sunday 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. 805-737-1129, lompocart.com .

ARTIST'S RECEPTION AT THE CYPRESS GALLERY: Paintings by Neil Andersson August 1 – 27, 2017 The Lompoc Valley Art Association proudly presents Neil Andersson as August’s Featured Artist. Neil says: “For me the landscape is a source of incredible beauty - a place of rest, of escape, of harmony rather than dissonance. My paintings and drawings are a record of things that interest me - sometimes simply the relationship of colors and shapes, sometimes the memory of a real place - its atmosphere, its vegetation, the sky, the water, the time of day, season, and year.” 12
