ON THE COVER
Jean Quintana, Tree of Life, Mixed media. This work won the Juror's Choice in this month's "Nature's Secret" award show in the Guild Room@Gallery Los Olivos. Judge Chris Pavlov says, "Given that the title of the exhibition was “Nature’s Secrets,” I saw this piece as an allegory of our anthropomorphic and elusive understanding of the principles of nature. Most people are aware of the Tree of Life in the Bible, but less note that there were two trees mentioned in the Garden of Eden: The Tree of Knowledge and the Tree of Life. Similarly, as in Plato’s and Aristotle’s grasps on nature, the Tree of Knowledge and the Tree of Life are metaphors for the dialectic relationship between intuition and conception. As Kant describes this in his Critique of Pure Reason, 'Thoughts without content are empty, intuitions without concepts are blind…only from their union can cognition arise.'”

WILDLING MUSEUM MEETS ITS CAPITAL CAMPAIGN GOAL The Wildling Museum of Art and Nature is delighted to announce that it met its campaign goal of $1.8 million, allowing it to move forward with the purchase of the building in which it rents space at 1511 Mission Drive in Solvang. Thanks to a unique financial arrangement offered by their past board chair Peter Adams, the Wildling Museum is buying the building this spring (which includes Lemos pet supply store and Blue City Mortgage). His family foundation offered to loan them $1.6 million if they could raise $1.8 million towards the total purchase price of $2.6 million. They achieved that milestone in February and will be closing escrow in March. “We are so excited by the support from our community that has allowed us to transition from being a renter into being a landlord. We love being here in Solvang, in the center of the Valley and County and are just thrilled to make this our permanent home,” said executive director Stacey Otte-Demangate. PRIVATE COLLECTIONS OF THE SANTA BARBARA REGION
Nichole Strasburg, Local Sky
THROUGH MAY 29, 2017 The Wildling Museum of Art & Nature is proud to present its newest exhibition comprised of artworks borrowed from the private collections of its members. Not only will visitors be able to experience artworks that are not on public display, but they will get an inside look into how and why collectors choose their pieces.
The Wildling Museum has announced that trees of the tri-counties will be the theme for their Annual NaturePhotography Competition in 2017. From their bark and leaves to their ecosystems and inhabitants, each tree is unique. The tri-counties (Santa Barbara Michael Miner, After the Fire, County, San Luis Obispo County and Ventura Part 2, photograph County) are home to a diverse range of tree species that make our landscape beautiful. Explore the life cycle, those who call it home, the threats they face, and their individuality. The Wildling wants photographers to get creative with the theme and discover trees in new and interesting ways. Get up close and personal – observe form, texture, shape. How are they rooted in the land? Who lives in their branches? As a complement to the oak habitat mural by John Iwerks, the adult competition will be on view in the second floor gallery and the junior competition will be featured in the Barbara Goodall Education Center. Awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd will be awarded in both categories. Entries for the adult and junior competitions are due May 1, 2017. For more information about the competition, visit www.wildlingmuseum.org. 6
Sunday, March 26 at 3pm, Iwerks Brothers to Speak at Wildling Museum Brothers John and Larry Iwerks will be the second in the Wildling’s yearlong Artist Talk series. Join them in a discussion about their body of work, what inspires them to create, their techniques and much more.
Sat/Sun, April 1/2 Photography Workshop with Jeff Jones In conjunction with the Wildling Museum’s annual photography competition, a two day workshop led by photographer Jeff Jones will be offered. Fee: $90 Contact the Wildling to sign up.

Exhibit: Minnie Facets Featuring Minnie Anderson & Patricia Watkins Through March 31, 2017
Patricia Watkins Sun, Moon, and Earth
Minnie Anderson Champagne
Patricia, who built a foundation around Classical Jewelry, enjoys branching out. For this Show, she will have three cases of differing styles. Displayed in the first case are Bohemian Designs which combine organic materials such as leather, waxed linen and silk thread with crystals, agates and Czech beads through weaving, knotting and crocheted techniques. Viking Knit, the weaving of metal wire with one-of-a-kind torched beads, will be in case two. Last, but not least, Classical designs of semi precious stones in combination with sterling silver and gold filled metals will shine brightly in case number three. In her work, Patricia strives to capture the feeling of “Easy Elegance,” throughout all styles. This “Easy Elegance" keeps customers returning year after year to view and purchase her designs.
Minnie Anderson Time Travel
Patricia Watkins Sleeping Beauty
Minnie, who is known for her family heirlooms of graphite portraits, has another side to her talents! She has enjoyed expanding her art in a different direction the last five years. "Delving into the abstract World is a real journey for my emotions. Sometimes I feel very lost. By starting with a line or circle, something familiar, I return from that lost feeling. I enjoy painting on black because colors pop when applied." Minnie’s media is Acrylic and Metallic paint. She likes to design with a group of simple shapes or shadows as they are pleasing and soothing in such a complicated world! She likes the journey and so will the viewers!

Exhibit: Shadows of My Former Self - Photographs by Jeffrey Bloom Exhibit: Small Work Thinking Big - Sculpture by Eric Morlan Through March 18–April 12, 2017 For more information about the "Shadows of My Former Self" exhibit or The C Gallery connie@thecgallery • 805-344-3807 • www.thecgallery.com
The C Gallery will open the show “Shadows of My Former Self,” featuring still photography, all personal shadows of Jeffrey Bloom, a former Hollywood screenwriter for “Columbo” as well as a director/producer. The show starts Saturday March 18, with a reception from 4 – 6 pm. “The collection of shadows have been manipulated to elevate them to fine art, both evocative and unique,” says The C Gallery Director, Connie Rohde. Bloom will be sharing the exhibit with Lompoc sculptor, Eric Morlan. His contemporary metal works on pedestals, titled, “Small Works Thinking Big,” are a perfect complement for Bloom's moody shadows. Morlan has been making art his entire life, and recently began to focus on non-objective sculpture, noting the depth of exploration that is so appealing in abstract work. He credits three mentors from Allan Hancock College, Nat Fast, George Muro, and Bill Shinn as having a great influence on his evolution as an artist. Morlan has shown widely throughout the Central Coast of California with early days in Solvang at St. John's Gallery. The collection which Eric Morlan is bringing to The C Gallery includes smaller pedestal pieces, though his body of work soars with his larger wall pieces.

THE LOS OLIVOS WINE MERCHANT & CAFE 2870 Grand Ave, Los Olivos
Art Without Borders Exhibit: Barbara & Floyd Snyder: Peace and Tranquility Through May 4, 2017
This talented married couple have each inspired the other’s creative photography over time and their work shows delightfully well together in this exhibit. Each artist works both with original photography and digitally enhanced original photography, largely concentrating on scenes from nature that they feel bring an experience of peace and tranquility to the viewer. The beautiful images on view provide an engaging viewing encounter, and pieces are available for purchase by those who may wish to acquire a work that provides a lyrical commentary on nature’s many gifts. Each artist has worked in very interesting career fields that over time changed and evolved into a concentration on artistic endeavors. They have owned and operated picture frame studios and art galleries and their backgrounds have informed their art and encouraged them to give attention to their own creativity. They have much to share with those who have the opportunity to view their work.
Barbara Snyder, Lone Cypress
Floyd Snyder, Strawberry Fields Forever
This exhibit is one of a continuing series of shows made possible by the commitment of the Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café to showcase local art and artists. Santa Ynez Valley Art Association (formerly the Artists Guild SYV), a nonprofit arts organization with over thirty years of history in the area, coordinates and manages the “art without borders” installation in cooperation with the Café. A portion of art sales benefits the organization, and these collaborative efforts - a way to keep art alive and accessible in the Santa Ynez Valley.
