ON THE COVER
Trish Campbell, Simple. Trish says, "Art in all its mystery and beauty has always been a big part of my life. After school my brothers and sisters and I would often gather around our dining room table, and draw and write together. Both my parents were creative people, and our art brought them smiles and enhanced our family life. This is what I think art does; it enhances life, makes us human. I hope that my art enhances the lives of many viewers and brings smiles to many."

LOMPOC VALLEY ART ASSOCIATION …the Early years! by Vicki Andersen, President
The Lompoc Valley Art Association was created in 1966 with 34 Charter members. Darrell Brandon became the LVAA’s first President. The aims of the Lompoc Art Association at its inception included * Having high quality art exhibits * Encouraging other artists to live and paint in the Lompoc Valley * Working towards having an art gallery in Lompoc * Raising the standards of art locally through juried shows * Creating better communications among artists * Taking a special interest in beginning artists & providing educational programs From the beginning, through their monthly meetings, LVAA has provided informative programs covering all aspects of art. These are always open to the public, and include demonstrations in all mediums, speakers on all forms of art and art film presentations. LVAA early shows were held Sundays at Ocean Park. The association, up until the opening of the Cypress Gallery, held annual Spring & Fall judged shows at the Grossman Gallery of the Lompoc Library. The forerunner of the annual Flower Festival Art Shows that the LVAA ran for many years was a judged show held at Ryon Park. This eventually became a large commercial fine art show with local and out of town artists showing & selling their work. LVAA has since its beginning awarded scholarships to local students planning future studies in the arts. The association was key in the formation of the Lompoc Valley Arts Council and is long time supporter of arts & cultural events in Lompoc.
…next month Cypress Gallery’s creation!

Lompoc Valley Art Association CYPRESS GALLERY The LVAA and Cypress Gallery offers area artists an outlet to display and sell their artwork and also offers educational opportunities to the community. With the exception of April, the gallery has a monthly rotation of artwork submitted by member artists and there is a portion of the gallery dedicated to presenting the exclusive work of a featured artist. Entry fees for the monthly in-gathering are only $4.00 per piece with a max of 4 pieces and the featured artist area is $40.00 for the month. The gallery collects a 25% commission on all artwork sold in the gallery. Smaller pieces priced under $45.00 can be entered for a flat fee of $4.00 per month per artist collection, limited only by space considerations. This April we will be featuring our annual Spring Show. It is a judged competition open to all area artists. The Spring Show has eight categories including Acrylic, Oil, Aqua media, Mixed Media, Photography, Digital Art, Graphics, and Three-Dimensional artwork. Monetary awards and ribbons are given for first, second, third place and best of show. Details can be found in our prospectus available at the gallery, 119 E. Cypress Ave, Lompoc and on-line at our web site www.lompocvalleyartassociation.com . May of 2018 will feature in the front room a collection of up to 150 fish cutouts. The cutouts are being sold to any and all area artists of all ages for $5.00. The artist can finish the wood cutout anyway they like, painted, covered with decoupage, decorated with mosaic. One or both sides of the fish can be finished and the fish will be hung on a wall, displayed in a stand or suspended for two-sided works. There isn’t a fee to hang in the May display and the fish may be offered for sale or NFS. The fish cutouts are available at the gallery during normal business hours Tuesday through Sunday from 12:00 to 4:00.
Member artists may offer classes in the gallery with the approval of the gallery director.
11
The association also has another option to display artists work, a Traveling Art Show. The TAS is a program where art is hung in area businesses. Each artist is responsible for hanging their artwork and managing their own sales and there isn’t a commission charged. The artwork is rotated on a quarterly basis.
Still in the planning stages is an Art Hunt scheduled for October. Participating members will produce small (up to 5X7 inch) art and the contributed works will be hidden around the area with photographic clues given for the location. A reception will be held during the month and community members that have found pieces of the artwork will be able to attend and meet the artists and have their works signed by the artist.
Yearly membership in the association is $25.00 per artist and $30.00 per couple. We look forward to meeting all area artists and encourage your participation in our group. Our Facebook page is www.facebook.com/CypressGallery Contact Tom Chrones tchrones@yahoo.com for information about the gallery or the LVAA.
People’s Choice Awards is a monthly event at Cypress Gallery. Visitors to the Gallery are invited to pick out their favorite piece of art and vote for it by filling out the ballot slip. At the end of the month – the artist receiving the most votes wins a free entry into the next month’s show. The winning art piece is prominently displayed for that month. Visitors become interested when they know they have a chance to vote. Many times they will go back through the gallery, and really look at each piece of art. We have visitors from our local community who come in every month to vote for their choice. The benefit to our artists is immense. Each vote that they get means that out of all of the beautiful work in the Cypress Gallery, a visitor thought that their piece was the best.
Scholarship program The Lompoc Valley Art Association has traditionally supported art students from the local high schools and Allan Hancock College through its scholarship program. Each year valley area students are encouraged to submit an application accompanied by work samples to the association's scholarship committee for consideration. Throughout the years LVAA artists have been involved in fund raising activities to build up a resource from which to award supportive funds to assist the next generation of artists in their search for self-expression through the visual arts. We encourage both artists and art lovers to contribute to this ongoing endeavor.

"A Walk Through the Cypress" March 2018 • By Terry Taylor In come the March winds, they blow and blow, they sweep up the brown leaves that green ones may grow.–George Washington Wright Houghton, American poet (1850–91). We've had the winds, the warmth, the cold and rain. March is a capricious month, but one full of promise for a beautiful spring on the central coast. It's one of my favorite months. There's still time and some wooden fish blanks available for you and your family to creatively transform for the Cypress Gallery's community craft event "Something Fishy."Come to the gallery to get your information and fish to participate in this fun project. You'll have the chance, for $5 each, to decorate/paint/embellish your fish (or fishes) to hang them in the special show in May 2018.Deadline for submission is April 22, 2018. People's Choice Award for February went to photographer Tom Chrones for his iconic photo of a Lompoc barn and flower fields. Kudos to you, Tom. Our flower fields, while in less abundance than years before, still exist and remain a lovely part of our town and are favored by many who come through the gallery. Photography has taken a front seat in the Cypress this month with a variety of pieces and techniques being offered by many of our camera-yielding members. New member Bill Morson has submitted several dye infused metal prints, including a great indoor photo of a NASA missile under construction entitled "Ready to Launch" and another of a worker in a flower field called "Flower Harvest." Marilyn Stankewich, Surf and Dunes
If you like local landscapes and seascapes, you will be pleased to see many fine examples hung this month. I especially like Marilyn Stankewich's "Surf and Dunes" in oil and new member Tom Heslop's watercolor entitled "Too Rocky," both excellent seaside depictions. Neil Andersson's oil painting entitled "Hillside and Gray Clouds" is skillful rendition of local grass-and oak-covered hills under a stormy sky. Favorite Betsee Talavera's four pieces are also wonderful and there for you to admire and perhaps purchase. Animal lover Penny Lee is showing a couple of paintings of adorable dogs and Trish Campbell has a submitted brightly painted flower field and hills piece in acrylic rightfully called "A Flower Field."Very special describes Kathy Badrak's acrylic pour painting in vibrant white and violet with a touch of green, entitled "Edge of Peace." Cypress Gallery is also a gift shop, as many of you know. You will find a fine selection of small items, jewelry, Lompoc souvenirs and greeting cards for all occasions, as well as affordable paintings and prints. Lompoc Valley Art Association meets the first Tuesday of most every month and meetings are open to the public. Please plan to attend for a social half-hour beginning 6:30 p.m. followed by a short business meeting and a special art presentation by a local artist or video presentation. Meetings are held at the Stone Pine Hall, 200 South H Street, Lompoc. Cypress Gallery is operated by the members of the Lompoc Valley Art Association and is located at 119 East Cypress Avenue, Lompoc. Hours: Tuesday through Sunday 12 noon to 4:00 p.m. 805-737-1129, lompocart.com.

Ruben Lee Dalton and Beau Lee Schmidt
Wildling Museum Poetry Series Father and Son
Sunday, April 15th • 3:00–4:30 pm The Wildling Museum will be hosting Ruben Lee Dalton, together with his son, Beau Lee Schmidt, reading poetry about work, addiction, religion, and the natural world. Ruben Lee Dalton was born and raised in LA, where he spent his youth playing little league baseball and running wild through the vineyards of the Verdugo foothills. At 17, Ruben was inducted into the Marine Corp and shipped off to Viet Nam. Upon returning home, Ruben earned his BA and MA degrees from UC Santa Cruz and UC Berkeley respectively, where he also started writing songs & poetry–in large part to deal with his PTSD. Ruben has received awards for his poetry and produced two CDs of original music. He lives in the Santa Ynez Valley with his wife, Jamie McCoy, and three marginally trained dogs. therubenleedaltonband@gmail.com Raised in Ojai California by a pack of Labradors and feral cats, Beau Lee Schmidt spent most of his time as a child eating mac & cheese, rollerblading, and defending himself for his extra-curricular activities. Although Beau was reluctant to follow in the footsteps of anyone, he was surrounded by the art of his mother’s cooking and father’s music & poetry. Since Beau hit 37 years old, he decided he would “grow up” and begin to follow passions besides cocaine and fine whiskey. Beau now writes poetry as a way to meet women and aid those with insomnia. He is excited to read at the Wildling for his debut. 22
• Guest judge: aerial photographer Bill Dewey • Adult and Junior Categories • Cash prizes for winners • Exhibit on view August 4 – November 5, 2018 Celebrating the 10th anniversary of its nature photography competition, the Wildling Museum of Art & Nature has announced the competition theme as “Nature Regenerated.” The wildfires that raged through the Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo Counties this past year have left our landscape blackened and desolate. Though it may seem that nature has succumbed to the fire, it perseveres and regenerates. Wildflowers and greenery spring from beneath the ash and debris in a display of hope and rebirth. Photographers are encouraged to capture examples of nature’s magical ability to regenerate and thrive in the aftermath of fire. This year’s guest judge will be photographer Bill Dewey, whose aerial photographs are on view in the Oak Gallery through March 12, 2018. The Wildling wants to remind photographers not to trespass on private property or enter into areas where access is prohibited or dangerous. Please abide by law enforcement and posted signs. There is an Adult Category, 18 years and older, and a Junior Category, 17 years and younger. For more information and entry forms go to: www.wildlingmuseum.org/photography-competition/
