LOMPOC
Our First Ever Art Hunt was a Success! The Lompoc Valley Art Association (LVAA) has held our first Art Hunt. It was a four-day event held as part of “Artober,” a month-long celebration of the Arts in Lompoc. Twenty-eight local artists donated over 140 pieces of art. This art was “hidden” through-out Lompoc. Eight LVAA members hid at least 45 pieces each day, over a three-day period. As the art was being hidden, we posted clues on Facebook and Instagram to help community members find the art pieces. We invited the “finders” to post a picture of themselves and their find. We quickly found out that we had a following on Facebook as they started posting their finds! All the art pieces were found. On Sunday, the fourth day, a reception was held at the Cypress Gallery so that the community could come in and have their “found art” signed by the artists! We had over 40 “hunters” come to the reception. It was fun to hear their “hunting” stories and how they felt when they found their special piece of Art. We even had a group of 22 friends and family members group working together to hunt! We are already planning on making the Art Hunt an annual event! Many thanks to our wonderful community and to ExploreLompoc for supporting our event.

uring the weekend of October 12, 13 and 14th, The Lompoc Theatre Project (LTP) presented “Lompoc Chalks, a chalk festival for everyone”! On Friday the 12th, the committee of volunteers set up the city parking lot on the corner of I and Cypress Streets and blocked off the squares for the artists. There were over 45 artists who participated from all over California and the United States as well as several local children and teen-agers. Later that night, the artists were treated to an evening of food and entertainment with a wine reception held at The Lompoc Theatre from 5:00 to 6:30 pm. There were six wineries that poured complimentary wines; Montemar Wines, Lafond Winery, Sweetzer Cellars, Hilliard Bruce Winery, Fiddlehead Cellars, and Temperance Cellars. The food was catered by Central Coast Specialty Foods and guests were treated to tours of the theatre. Geoff Moran, Sarah and Paul Barthel kept the crowd entertained with popular show tunes and Broadway favorites. Following the reception, the party continued for the artists and guests at The Anderson Recreation Center with a delicious BBQ dinner catered by Valley Grill, and a silent auction of beautiful donated items. There was also dancing music provided by the band Hard Times. On Saturday at the festival, there were food trucks, artisan vendors, children’s play and coloring areas, and a stage for entertainment with a beer and wine booth. The artists continued to work on their drawings as the public strolled around watching them as well as enjoying the entertainment on the stage. The weather was perfect and it was expected that over 3,000 people attended the new festival that day. The following day was more of the same as the artists finished up and enjoyed each other’s paintings. Throughout the weekend, more than 5,000 people took part in the festivities. There are currently plans to hold another festival next year during “Artober” in Lompoc, the City of Arts and Flowers. Looking forward into November, The Lompoc Theatre Project will begin its #GivingTuesday Campaign. The theme is “Love Lompoc Theatre” and the goal will be to raise the money to fix the roof above the rental units ($70,000 needed) so that the spaces can be rented out. The income will be used to finish refurbishment of the theatre. What is #GivingTuesday? It is an international day of giving to charitable organizations, on the Tuesday following Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday. This year the date is Tuesday, November 27th. More than $300 million was raised online last year nationally, over 2.5 million gifts were made and the median gift was $120.40. There were over 1 million social media mentions about Giving Tuesday and on Twitter, there were over 21.7 billion impressions! The Lompoc Theatre Project will be hosting an online campaign as well as direct mail and personal invitations to participate and donate. There will be many ways to give and LTP hopes to find some matching grants from individuals, organizations, corporations, Facebook and Google. There will be an opportunity for the public to crowd-fund for The Lompoc Theatre Project in a special contest which will be rewarding remarkable prizes and awards! More information on the contest will be sent out as the date approaches. Save The Date of Tuesday, November 27th and you can participate in the event: #GivingTuesday!

"A WALK THROUGH THE CYPRESS" NOVEMBER 2018 • BY TERRY TAYLOR Hello, November! Fall colors (yes, we have them!) are popping up all around the central coast in the hills, the vineyards and neighborhood trees. We're not quite New England, but we have our own autumn beauty surrounding us. Couple that with moderate temperatures and we are, once again, thankful for paradise on the coast. If it's November, it means that holidays are on the way and that the Christmas tree is up in the gallery and loaded with hand-crafted ornaments made of embroidered felt, different clays, glass and gourds. Artisan ornaments can grace your own tree and make thoughtful gifts to those you care about. You'll also find artist-made holiday cards throughout the gallery. October's People's Choice Award went to Linda Gooch for her giclee print "Sunlight in La Sala." Congratulations, Linda.
Debby Fuller, Pink Bell Tower
Two talented photographers, Debby Fuller and Lynda Schiff have taken the spotlight for our featured artist program this month. Their show, entitled "Phone-y Photos," features photos from cell phone cameras. After learning a bit about available cell phone optics and apps, they now use both types of cameras to capture different types of images. There are many framed photos to view and to buy, and the affordable pricing on all items make them perfect for holiday gift-giving. My favorites in this show are Fuller's "Pink Bell Tower" of the La Purisima Mission and Schiff's "Stunning at Sunset," an homage to central coast oak trees and beautiful skies. The show runs through November 25th. In the main gallery there are a variety of paintings, drawings, photographs, gourds, fused glass pieces, glazed tile work and hand-knitted hats. Two portraits by Mary Whittemore caught my eye. Her "Workshop Study of Young Girl" in charcoal and "Study of Michael Sweets' Head of a Woman" in oil are both stunning and full of character. Other paintings and drawings by Vicki Andersen, Linda Gooch, Tom Heslop and J. T. Turner are beautiful and very different from one another in colors, style, medium and subject matter. Make Cypress Gallery your go-to gift shop where you'll find a great variety of small paintings and prints, jewelry, fiber arts, glass, greeting cards and souvenirs created by local artists and artisan crafters.

FEATURED ARTIST & SHOW
"PHONE-Y PHOTOS: QUALITY CELL PHONE PHOTOS" OCTOBER 30 – NOVEMBER 25, 2018
The Lompoc Valley Art Association’s Cypress Gallery will be featuring “Phone-y Photos”, an artist show by Debby Fuller and Lynda Schiff. The show be on exhibit from October 30 to November 5, 2018. A cell phone photograph can be so much more than just a snapshot! Come to the Cypress Gallery and see for yourself! While both photographers use traditional cameras, they have always believed that the quality of a photograph depends more on the eye of the photographer than on the type of equipment used to capture the image. They prefer to capture images that come up in daily life than to set out to capture a specific photograph. A portable cell phone allows for this spontaneous capture. JALAMA: HIGHWAY TO THE SEA ART EXHIBIT BY LOMPOC TEN
Lompoc Ten, a group of local painters drawn together through their love of painting, will present their second show entitled “Jalama: Highway to the Sea at the Grossman Gallery during the month of November. Each artist has painted what they treasure about the journey along Jalama Road to the well-loved beach at Jalama County Park. Six miles south of Lompoc off of Highway 1, Jalama Road connects farmland to ranches and ultimately to the surfer-haven at the seashore. All along the way there's something to draw the eye and soothe the soul. The painters, inspired by their mutual interests, meet regularly throughout the year for art-making and discussion, meals, excursions, critiques and studio visits. Though like-minded in their love of art, each member has his or her own unique style and approach to visual expression. Members Vicki Anderson, Jon Arnold, Diane Atturio, Trish Campbell, Alan Freeman, Linda Gooch, Elizabeth Monks Hack, Carol Oliveira, Betsee Talavera and Ann Thompson have been interpreting the local scene and a variety of personal subjects for many years. In banding together they have found mutual inspiration and new paths of personal creativity, the full range of which will be on display in the exhibit. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, November 10 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Grossman Gallery, located in the Lompoc Library at 501 East North Avenue, Lompoc. The public is invited to attend. The show is open throughout the month of November during library hours.

Craftsman.
“The artist must be a craftsman, for without the knowledge of the material and the skill with the tools he cannot express his vision. Once there was no division between art and craft; in medieval society painters and sculptures as well as potters and weavers were members of craft guilds. A man was a painter, or a stone mason; his work, his way of life, was central to his identity and recognized as his means of centering and discovering himself.” From: A Way of Working, The Spiritual Dimension of Craft. D.M Dooling.
2nd Saturday Artisans.

This is a great opportunity to come out, visit with the artists, and get to know their backstory. Booths will be located within the Los Olivos Community Organization Building (formerly the Grange).

Longtime friends and award winning artists Carrie Givens, Susan Belloni & Renee Kelleher present their new show Cornucopia: Seasons & Scenery. They celebrate the change of seasons and the abundance of nature in their landscape paintings with an exhibit & sale that runs from November 1st to November 30th at Gallery Los Olivos in Los Olivos, CA. The public is invited to join them at a reception for the artists on Sunday, November 3rd, 2018 from 3 to 5 pm. Art lovers can choose from original paintings in oils, pastels and acrylics. Painting subjects include a bounty of inspiration from local country vistas, barnyards and vineyards, towns, beaches, harvest still lifes and more. Since 1997, UCSB Arts graduate, Susan Belloni has exhibited in many local juried, invitational, benefit and solo shows in galleries, libraries, businesses and even on the outside of the old Sedgwick Ranch house in the Santa Ynez Valley. Her painting of a Channel Islands scene was selected for a nationally juried exhibit at Solvang’s Wildling Museum and she has exhibited in Santa Barbara's Museum of Natural History and at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. Susan helped found Southern California Artists Painting for the Environment (SCAPE) which has raised funds for Santa Barbara County nonprofits since 2003. One of her favorite art experiences was the day a very famous actor and Santa Barbara Zoo supporter bought the giraffe painting she painted on location at the Zoo. A photo of that painting later ended up in Westways Magazine. She also enjoys talking to children who love art when they stop by as she is outdoors painting. Oils and acrylics are Susan’s favorite media and recently she has gone back to a love of black and white charcoal drawing. See more of Susan's work at www.susanbelloni.com For the past 15 years, Carrie Givens has been working furiously on her pastel paintings, especially when she discovered the incredible rich color pallet, the variety of uses pastels had to offer, and the types of paper there were for pastels. She began exhibiting her paintings and has won numerous awards connected to the art groups in which she is involved. Carrie has worked with other mediums such as watercolors, oils, ink, colored pencil, and the airbrush. For now, pastels are her medium of choice. She strives to discover the shadows, reflections, light, and atmosphere in her colorful landscapes and still life paintings. Carrie lives in Goleta, California, on the organic farm that she and her husband have owned the past 35 years. The farm can be a great source for inspiration, along with the fantastic landscape of the Santa Barbara area. She also loves visits to Baja California, with a truly different color palette. Currently Carrie is a member of the Santa Barbara Art Association, the Goleta Valley Art Association, S.C.A.P.E. (Southern California Artists Painting for the Environment), a signature member of the Pastel Society of the Gold Coast, the Pastel Society of the West Coast and a recent member of the Oak Group. See more on Carrie’s website www.carriegivensart.com
Renée Kelleher has painted from coast to coast, capturing the splendor of Santa Ynez Valley sunsets to the blazing lights of New York City. Her subject matter covers a range as wide as her life, which has taken her all over the country and overseas. Her favorite art experience was practicing her oils in Italy and France. Her favorite business experience was selling ten paintings to an individual client in a single viewing. Renée is a plein air and studio painter with a passion for strong color. Over her 30 years of painting she has honed her impressionistic realism style with prominent artists such as Matt Smith, Karl Dempwolf, Marilyn Simandle, and Robin Hall. She enjoyed training at the Scottsdale Artists' School and at The Art Students League of New York, where painting the city as the sun went down and the lights came up was perhaps her greatest challenge. She is most content painting the ocean or the sky, so she can pull out her blues. Kelleher has been represented by Waterhouse Gallery in her longtime home of Santa Barbara, New Masters Gallery in Carmel, and Cody Gallery in Los Olivos. She has exhibited in The Wildling Museum and The Elverhøj Art Museum in Solvang, the Artwalk at the Museum of Natural History and the Historical Museum in Santa Barbara. Renée has been profiled in the elegant, culture magazine, Ranch and Reata. Currently, she is showing at the Elverhøj Museum in a group show called Past, Present, And Future. Renée is a member of Santa Barbara Art Association, Southern California Artists Painting for the Environment (S.C.A.P.E.), and The American Impressionist Society. Renée and her husband live on their ranch in the Santa Ynez Valley where she may be found feeding her cow, Betsy Bloomingdale, or painting in her beloved studio. Please see more of her work at www.reneekelleher.com Gallery Los Olivos was founded in 1992 and is owned by an incorporated group of over fifty (50) member artists from Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Ventura Counties. The gallery is located at 2920 Grand Avenue, in Los Olivos, CA, telephone (805) 688-7517. Artist members operate the gallery which is open daily 10:00 to 5:00 (10:00 to 4:00 in December and January).
