Exhibit: Felipe Molina

Felipe Molina

Felipe Molina was recently inducted into the Album Art hall of fame for his Counting Crows album covers. Enjoy an intimate viewing of art accompanied by great wine and company during business hours (Thurs-Mon, 11-5). More information at www.standingsunwines.com

It all started early fall 2009, Tony Lucca & Jay Nash co-headlined a tour which featured Matt Duke as support. The bromance was set into motion. Early in the tour, the three recognized that they had great musical chemistry with their three part harmony and different, yet complementary approaches to guitar. On a day off, 09/09/09, to be exact Lucca, Nash and Duke recorded four songs in an impromptu session at SPACE in Evanston, IL. Upon hearing those recordings, management and Rykodisc almost immediately put a plan together to release them as a four song EP. Two months later, the TFDI EP was released and quickly rose to number 1 on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter chart and stayed there for weeks. That EP has sold nearly 30,000 digital copies to date. Tony Lucca, Jay Nash and Matt Duke joined forces again in 2010 for a national tour that was largely sold out, and wrote and recorded the TFDI full length When I Stop Running. That tour schedule was cut short by Tony Lucca's success on The Voice. In 2016, TFDI played together again for the first time in five years and decided that they needed to record more music together. Beggars & Ballers is TFDI's first release in nearly six years Doors open 7pm/Show starts 7:30 $20 General Admission / $25 Reserved Seating All ages show! Tickets are WILL CALL and will not be mailed. Carol Talley, Silver Linings 1920

Terri Taber, Lifting Fog at Christy Ranch

Carol Talley grew up in Santa Barbara and attended the University of California Santa Cruz. She has been working with pastels and oils since the late 1990’s both in her studio and in plein air. Her emphasis is on the landscape; including dramatic beaches, deep redwood forests and long vistas.

Terri Taber grew up in Southern California, leaving Los Angeles in her late teens to attend UCSB where she earned a bachelor degree in art and painting.

Those who own her art mention the sense of peace and beauty her paintings bring to them. Carol’s paintings exhibit expressive energy and harmonious color. She has studied with Albert Handell, Glenna Hartman, Kim Lordier, Terri Ford and Bert Collins.

6

In the late 1990’s she discovered pastels and has been thrilled with this medium ever since. She currently continues her art education with a variety of workshops and classes and works on a mentor basis with notable artists Richard McKinley and Bert Collins. The countryside is Terri's friend, companion and counselor. It’s beauty never fails to amaze and delight her. The goal in her paintings is to impart this splendor of the outdoors so others can enjoy this wonder in their homes. She is able to capture the lighting, contrasts, textures, and mystery of the landscape in her pastel paintings.

ART WITHOUT BORDERS EXHIBIT Michelle Castle: Botanicals

Through January 4, 2018 The Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Cafe 2870 Grand Ave, Los Olivos

An exhibit of beautiful botanical artwork by local artist Michelle Castle will be on view at the Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café, from October 30 through January 4. The artist’s botanical watercolor illustrations combine her fascination and appreciation for vintage etchings and stylized text with fine, hand-crafted papers. Drawings from the 1600-1700’s are hand-painted with watercolor into multi-dimensional illustrations. Some are then further manipulated digitally, then printed on fine 100% cotton rag paper. Michelle has been an active participant in local community art, and is also the proud owner of Honey Paper, a bridal lounge and stationery design studio. This new “Botanicals” show is a great opportunity for visitors to see an impressive body of work.

This exhibit is one of a continuing series of shows made possible by the commitment of the Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café to showcase local art and artists. Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association, a nonprofit arts organization with over thirty years of history in the area, coordinates and manages the “art without borders” installation in cooperation with the Café. A portion of art sales benefits the organization, and these collaborative efforts - a way to keep art alive and accessible in the Santa Ynez Valley. Rebecca Gomez and Allen Koehn: Outside the Box

Allen Koehn, Barking up th Right Tree Digital photo, archival mixed media print, 16x20

Rebecca Gomez, Cast Shadows Series III Mixed media, 24x30

Through January 15, 2018 Epiphany Wine Cellars

2974 Grand Ave, Los Olivos A diverse show of art pieces by local artists Rebecca Gomez and Allen Koehn, the show title, “Outside the Box”, refers to the artists’ use of art media in unusual and perhaps unexpected ways, resulting in works that engage the viewer on several levels. The photographic art by Koehn is based on digital photographs which have been printed on archival art rag paper, affixed to a stretched canvas base. The photo pigments have been fixed into the paper using an unusual technique utilizing a specialized UV protective varnish in many coats that is absorbed into the paper. Then the works are coated with an acrylic matte medium, resulting in photographic work that is as resilient as a finished painting. This allows it to be framed without matte or glass, in this case in floater frames, which allows one to take it in much like they would experience artwork in other mediums. These “archival mixed media prints” can hang without limitations sometimes imposed on photographic work, in that they are UV protected and will not fade in strong light and have a tough surface not subject to damage without protection by glass. As for the mixed media work by Gomez, the artist has noted: “There are many layers in my work, and often some transparency. While my work may appear to be disparate in style or execution, it is actually all part of an exploration of subjects or objects that can never truly be captured in a fixed way. Whether representational or abstract, the pieces are about asking questions, attempting to see beyond the surface, looking for openings, connections. They celebrate not what we know and the limits of knowing, but rather the beauty of mystery and the impossibility of fixed knowledge about the manifest world.” The work in the show includes some pieces from the artist’s “Shadow Series”, which incorporates black and white digital photography as one of several layers in the finished artwork – again, an unusual approach. Other works involve a mixed range of painting and drawing media. This exhibit introduces Epiphany Cellars as a venue supporting the efforts of SYV Arts. Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association, a nonprofit arts organization with over thirty years of history in the area, coordinates and manages the “art without borders” installations. A portion of art sales benefits the organization, and these collaborative efforts - a way to keep art alive and accessible in the Santa Ynez Valley. THE CYPRESS GALLERY

119 E. Cypress Ave, Lompoc • Open Tue–Sun, 12-4PM & 12–5PM Daylight Savings www.lompocvalleyartassociation.com

"A Walk Through the Cypress" November 2017 • By Terry Taylor We survived Halloween and all the cute and scary (!) trick-or-treaters, and now we're experiencing Dio de los Muertos which has grown in popularity in California the past few years. I love the sugar skulls and other colorful decor of this Mexican tradition. Three of our locals are sharing the front room as featured artists in a fun and wonderful show they are calling "The Girls." Sharron Babcock's precision-made jewelry (earrings, bracelets and amulets) is made with the tiniest of beads in lovely patterns for all occasions, including seasonal items like pumpkins and Christmas trees. Joellen Chrones works with fused glass and makes colorful dishes, bowls, plates, small picture frames and pocket vases. Her whimsical work is food and dishwasher safe. Her favorite subjects are chickens, birds, animals and funny faces. Finally, Nicole LeRoux is primarily an animal artist, which makes sense, since she is the main caregiver to the farm animals at La Purisima Mission. She paints her animals with acrylics and extends her work to commissioned pet portraits, as well. Nicole also sculpts ornaments and magnets in polymer clay, which she then paints.

Joellen Chrones, The Girls. Wall plaques

The People's Choice award for October was awarded to fine artist Betsee Talavera for her acrylic painting "Tidal Surge." Congratulations, Betsee, for winning this coveted award.

In the main gallery, there are a number of outstanding pieces, including a collection of pottery from Ann Brink and a wonderful variety of handcrafted ornaments on the central Christmas tree. Several paintings caught my eye, and I especially like Diane Atturio's "Old Man of Sedona," featuring a gnarly old tree done in watercolor. Bold colors and abstract brush strokes bring Tonya Romano Schultz's "Summer Flame" to life, and "Foley Vineyards" by Sylvia Kokatnur is another fine example of her excellent work. In addition to being a gallery full of fine art, Cypress Gallery is an amazing gift shop. You'll find a multitude of hand-crafted items priced affordably: small original paintings and prints featuring La Purisima Mission, Lompoc scenes, animals and florals, as well as jewelry, glass pieces, pottery, gourds, textile items and hand-crafted Lompoc souvenirs. In addition, there is an extensive selection of greeting cards for all occasions. We'd also like to announce that our Holiday Tree is up! We have many gift items available that are handcrafted by our artists.

Diane Atturio, Old Man of Sedona

Cypress Gallery is operated by the members of the Lompoc Valley Art Association and is located at 119 East Cypress Avenue, Lompoc. Hours: Tuesday through Sunday 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. 805-737-1129, lompocart.com .

The Girls Through Nov. 26 The featured artists in Cypress Gallery will be Sharron Babcock, Nicole Le Roux and Joellen Chrones. Together they have a wide variety of paintings, jewelry, glass and gift items. Sharron Babcock presents jewelry made with the smallest glass seed beads. She creates amulets, bracelets and earrings for every occasion, including seasonal items like pumpkins , tiny Christmas trees, etc. Nicole Le Roux is an animal artist first and foremost. She does personalized pet portraits. Joellen Chrones works with fused glass, dishes, bowls and plates. The designs are melted into the glass in the kiln so they are food safe and dishwasher safe. 9

The Student & The Teacher Through February 5, 2018

Isabelle Johnson, Feeding Cattle, Winter

Works by modernist Western painter Theodore Waddell are paired with those of his former teacher Isabelle Johnson in a new exhibit called “The Student & The Teacher” at the Wildling Museum of Art & Nature in Solvang. The paintings share many of the same subjects – Montana landscapes, livestock on the range, trees and plant life – and the teacher’s influence is evident. But the works also offer a view of how the student has shaped his own vision in the intervening years. “The Student & The Teacher: Theodore Waddell and Isabelle Johnson” is on view October 27, 2017 through February 5, 2018 at the Wildling Museum of Art & Nature. An opening reception on Friday, October 27 at 5:30 p.m. is free and open to the public, and includes refreshments and readings of poetry created in response to the show. Also opening on that date, in the second floor Valley Oak Gallery, is “Overview: Aerial Photography of Bill Dewey” featuring over two dozen images of natural features of the tri-counties area taken from aircraft. It is on view through January 2018. Dewey will attend the opening reception.
