2017 SYV VISITORS GUIDE

www.visitsyv.com/santa-ynez-valley-destination-guide/

Message from 3rd District Arts Commissioner Stacey Otte-Demangate County Supervisor, Joan Hartmann, representing District 3, would love Valley-based artists to loan artworks for her office. I will be coordinating the loans which will just be for her office here in Solvang. If you would like to share some of your artwork with her and her varied visitors, please email me at stacey@wildlingmuseum.org. We will be rotating artworks 2 to 3 times a year. While an artwork could possibly sell to someone, this is primarily about visibility and sharing our mutual pride in the Santa Ynez Valley! Please feel free to email me at stacey.otte@gmail. com if you have any questions or concerns! And be sure to check out the Santa Barbara County Office of Arts and Culture’s revamped website! It’s beautiful and informative. http://www.sbac.ca.gov/ Artfully yours, Stacey Otte-Demangate Arts Commissioner, District 3

ON THE COVER

Kathy Badrak, Renewal, Acrylic mixed media Colors and textures have long been an important part of my life. I began my journey into art thirty years ago creating artwork with stained glass. In the early 1990’s, I took a basket class which introduced me to the gathering and the use of many natural materials. I discovered that I loved their colors, varieties, and textures. In 2009, I attended a series of workshops on weaving baskets and working with gourds. I found that gourds were the perfect medium in which to express myself. While exploring these new techniques, I have discovered mixed media. Using the canvas has now given me another way of expressing my love of color and textures. I have tremendous freedom and flexibility to develop and incorporate my basketry and gourds into my art. I am excited about the creative process – come join me in my journey.

ART WITHOUT BORDERS EXHIBIT

Sheila Krausse: California Dreamin'

Detail: Sheila Krausse, California Dreamin'

Through October 19, 2017 The Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Cafe 2870 Grand Ave, Los Olivos

Sheila Krausse grew up in Napa, California and moved to the central coast as a teenager. In her twenties, she belonged to the Santa Maria Artist Association and was a charter member of the Los Padres Artist Guild. Currently she participates with the Valley Art Gallery, Los Padres Artist Guild, Studios on the Park in Paso Robles, Arts Obispo, Gala de Arte, Santa Ynez Valley Arts, and the Art Center at Morro Bay. She is the resident artist at Thomas Hill Organics, an upscale restaurant in Paso Robles, and Carriage Vineyards in Templeton. Over the years, Sheila has shown her work at local art events, offices, banks, hospitals, restaurants, tasting rooms, and vineyards. Her paintings are in homes in several states.

October 20, 2017–January 4, 2018 An exhibit of beautiful botanical artwork by local artist Michelle Castle will be on view at the Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café, from October 30 through January 4. The artist’s botanical watercolor illustrations combine her fascination and appreciation for vintage etchings and stylized text with fine, hand-crafted papers. Drawings from the 1600-1700’s are hand-painted with watercolor into multi-dimensional illustrations. Some are then further manipulated digitally, then printed on fine 100% cotton rag paper. Michelle has been an active participant in local community art, and is also the proud owner of Honey Paper, a bridal lounge and stationery design studio. This new “Botanicals” show is a great opportunity for visitors to see an impressive body of work. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, November 9, from 5 to 6:30pm; art lovers can meet the artist and find out more about her process and vision. This exhibit is one of a continuing series of shows made possible by the commitment of the Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café to showcase local art and artists. Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association, a nonprofit arts organization with over thirty years of history in the area, coordinates and manages the “art without borders” installation in cooperation with the Café. A portion of art sales benefits the organization, and these collaborative efforts - a way to keep art alive and accessible in the Santa Ynez Valley. ART WITHOUT BORDERS EXHIBIT

Rebecca Gomez and Allen Koehn: Outside the Box

Allen Koehn, Barking up th Right Tree Digital photo, archival mixed media print, 16x20

Rebecca Gomez, Cast Shadows Series III Mixed media, 24x30

Through January 15, 2018 Epiphany Wine Cellars

2974 Grand Ave, Los Olivos A diverse show of art pieces by local artists Rebecca Gomez and Allen Koehn, the show title, “Outside the Box”, refers to the artists’ use of art media in unusual and perhaps unexpected ways, resulting in works that engage the viewer on several levels. The photographic art by Koehn is based on digital photographs which have been printed on archival art rag paper, affixed to a stretched canvas base. The photo pigments have been fixed into the paper using an unusual technique utilizing a specialized UV protective varnish in many coats that is absorbed into the paper. Then the works are coated with an acrylic matte medium, resulting in photographic work that is as resilient as a finished painting. This allows it to be framed without matte or glass, in this case in floater frames, which allows one to take it in much like they would experience artwork in other mediums. These “archival mixed media prints” can hang without limitations sometimes imposed on photographic work, in that they are UV protected and will not fade in strong light and have a tough surface not subject to damage without protection by glass. As for the mixed media work by Gomez, the artist has noted: “There are many layers in my work, and often some transparency. While my work may appear to be disparate in style or execution, it is actually all part of an exploration of subjects or objects that can never truly be captured in a fixed way. Whether representational or abstract, the pieces are about asking questions, attempting to see beyond the surface, looking for openings, connections. They celebrate not what we know and the limits of knowing, but rather the beauty of mystery and the impossibility of fixed knowledge about the manifest world.” The work in the show includes some pieces from the artist’s “Shadow Series”, which incorporates black and white digital photography as one of several layers in the finished artwork – again, an unusual approach. Other works involve a mixed range of painting and drawing media. This exhibit introduces Epiphany Cellars as a venue supporting the efforts of SYV Arts. Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association, a nonprofit arts organization with over thirty years of history in the area, coordinates and manages the “art without borders” installations. A portion of art sales benefits the organization, and these collaborative efforts - a way to keep art alive and accessible in the Santa Ynez Valley. Gallery Los Olivos "Silver" 25th Anniversary Exhibition Through 31, 2017

Set in one of the most picturesque valleys of Central California is the town of Los Olivos. More than 300 exhibitions have been hung at Gallery Los Olivos since it opened 25 years ago. However, for the month of October, GLO will show a selection of work from all of their artists in the show aptly titled “Silver”: 25th Anniversary Exhibition. All the works of art in the show are also reflections of what the artist sees as ‘silver.’ The interpretations are as varied as the genres of art represented. The richness of the work keeps patrons coming back for more. GLO has created it’s own momentum by offering high quality work at affordable prices. President Claudia Chapman said it all. “Exceptional talent and artistic diversity have been the hallmarks of Gallery Los Olivos. That the Gallery has not only survived through tough economic times, but has grown and is downright robust is validation of those qualities' pursuits. At a time when many galleries have gone under, our success is truly celebratory. The 25th Anniversary show in October will reflect the qualities for which the Board strives and promises to be stunning.” Twenty-five years ago, Los Olivos was a very different town than what it is today. The impact the 2004 film “Sideways” had on the valley, and especially Los Olivos, was palpable. Before that, the town was populated with many art galleries. Many had work from artists who were not local. The lack of a place to show the incredible work of local artists became a cause for a few stalwart souls. Vicki Andersen, Carol Simon and Peggy Fletcher are the only three of the original instigators who are still with GLO. When the Grand Avenue space opened up, it was the catalyst for the artists to find a way to open a collective gallery space. By bringing in the Santa Ynez Valley Art Association to take over the “Guild Room” in the Gallery for its members, GLO would finally make good fiscal sense. One of the artists pulled from the nearly 50-member group has their work showcased each month. There’s never a lack of material to choose from with all mediums the artists work in - from oil, acrylics and watercolor, to pastels, pen and pencil - it also has fine artists whose photography, jewelry and sculpture create a total spectrum of creative work. Slowly but surely the gallery spaces began leaving and tasting rooms for many of the wineries based in the SYV took up residence. Art and wine coexist nicely now as a great combo for visitors to make Los Olivos a destination. On Sunday, Oct. 8 from 1 - 4 pm GLO will host an artists reception. Local wines and light appetizers will be featured. We invite you to come and meet the artists at this event. GLO is at 2920 Grand Avenue, and is open seven days a week from 10am to 5pm. Members of GLO fulfill their membership by taking care of the gallery in various ways. All shows are juried and “Silver will also have a “People’s Choice” award, so we encourage all patrons to participate in this. October also includes the town-wide celebration “A Day in the Country” now in its’ 38th year. The town hops and pops on the 21st, from 10am till 4pm and GLO will jump in from 1 - 4pm. Members will have easels set up in front of their gallery creating and enriching the day’s events. (For more info visit: http://www.losolivosca.com/day-in-the-country) 8

WILDLING MUSEUM OF ART & NATURE 1511 Mission Dr., Solvang www.wildlingmuseum.org

Opening: The Student & The Teacher October 27, 2017–February 5, 2018 Opening Reception: Friday, October 27 • 5:30pm Works by modernist Western painter Theodore Waddell are paired with those of his former teacher Isabelle Johnson in a new exhibit called “The Student & The Teacher” at the Wildling Museum of Art & Nature in Solvang. The paintings share many of the same subjects – Montana landscapes, livestock on the range, trees and plant life – and the teacher’s influence is evident. But the works also offer a view of how the student has shaped his own vision in the intervening years. “The Student & The Teacher: Theodore Waddell and Isabelle Johnson” is on view October 27, 2017 through February 5, 2018 at the Wildling Museum of Art & Nature.

Isabelle Johnson, Feeding Cattle, Winter

An opening reception on Friday, October 27 at 5:30 p.m. is free and open to the public, and includes refreshments and readings of poetry created in response to the show.

Theodore Waddell, Marinii's Mare

Also opening on that date, in the second floor Valley Oak Gallery, is “Overview: Aerial Photography of Bill Dewey” featuring over two dozen images of natural features of the tri-counties area taken from aircraft. It is on view through January 2018. Dewey will attend the opening reception.

Theodore Waddell, Roscoe Sheep

Artist Talks at the Wildling The Wildling Museum of Art & Nature is pleased to announce the upcoming installments in the Artist Talk Series. The last Sunday of September and October offer insight into 2 different artists’ methods, evolution, and body of work.

Sunday, Oct. 29 • 3PM

Bill Dewey, Roblar Avenue Morning Light, Photograph

Aerial photographer Bill Dewey has had his private pilot's license since 1981 and bases his aerial photography out of Santa Barbara airport. Bill has been photographing the California landscape since taking up the camera in the early 1970's and has had a photography studio/business in Santa Barbara for 30 years. Some of his favorite subjects include the California Channel Islands, the Carrizo Plain, Baja California, and the rural California landscape. A member of the Santa Barbara OAK Group, he has been distinctly influenced by the art and character of the noted California painter Ray Strong. Bill’s photographs have been featured in several of the Wildling’s past exhibitions and will be the subject of the upcoming exhibition, Overview: The Aerial Photography of Bill Dewey, opening on October 27, 2017.

THE CYPRESS GALLERY

119 E. Cypress Ave, Lompoc • Open Tue–Sun, 12-4PM & 12–5PM Daylight Savings www.lompocvalleyartassociation.com

"A Walk Through the Cypress" October 2017 • By Terry Taylor It must be October. Pumpkins and pumpkin spice treats are everywhere and the internet and local stores are chock full of costumes, costume ideas and, of course, candy. Have you seen those big furry heads that everyone in town has tried on (eek!); one of these at my door will no doubt make me question the sanity of trick-or-treat. The gallery is decked out for fall and our featured artist for this month has decked the walls with color, color and more color. Mikki Alhart's show "What's in an Aura?" showcases Mikki's spiritual talent and she promises "free fun and entertainment" for those curious visitors who want Mikki to talk to them about their personal auras. Please join us at the artist's reception on Saturday, October 7th, 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. to view her amazing collection of paintings, enjoy some refreshment and let Mikki determine the color of your aura. The show runs through October 29th. The People's Choice award for September was awarded to Tom Chrones for his stunning photograph "Canterbury Steps." Congratulations, Tom.

Mikki Alhart's, Aqua Maiden

In the main gallery, there are a couple of beautiful and interesting pieces of ceramic clay. Ann Brink's large "Clover Bowl" is a contemporary design featuring natural color with soft green clover leaves. Gil Andersen's four-tile piece "Santa Barbara Mission" shows off Gil's design abilities and mastery of the clay tile. Both of these pieces, along with other ceramics in the gallery, will make lovely gifts for your loved ones or for yourself!

Several paintings caught my interest, including two coastal scenes by talented artist Betsee Talavera, one entitled "Tidal Shift" and the other "Tidal Surge." Two abstract paintings by Mikkel Naccarato feature sweeping colors blended to suggest a landscape or seascape to me but are exceptional just for the application of color. Claudette Carlton's watercolor "Black Poppies" is simple and elegant. While you may think we are pushing Christmas a little early in the year, we are displaying holiday ornaments now through December, because our handcrafted decorations are so very popular. Cypress Gallery has many gift items made by Betsee Talavera, Tidal Shift member artists and artisan crafts persons. You'll find a multitude of hand-crafted items priced affordably: small original paintings and prints featuring La Purisima Mission, Lompoc scenes, animals and florals, as well as jewelry, glass pieces, pottery, gourds, textile items and hand-crafted Lompoc souvenirs. In addition, there is an extensive selection of greeting cards for all occasions. Please join us at LVAA's monthly general meeting (open to the public), held most months on the first Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. at Stone Pine Hall, 210 South H Street, Lompoc. After refreshments and a short business meeting, there is an art presentation and/or demonstration by a local artist, which I know you will find interesting Cypress Gallery is operated by the members of the Lompoc Valley Art Association and is located at 119 East Cypress Avenue, Lompoc. Hours: Tuesday through Sunday 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. 805-737-1129, lompocart.com .

The Girls Oct. 31–Nov. 26 Opening Reception: Nov. 4 • 4–6pm The featured artists in Cypress Gallery will be Sharron Babcock, Nicole Le Roux and Joellen Chrones. Together they have a wide variety of paintings, jewelry, glass and gift items.

10

Sharron Babcock presents jewelry made with the smallest glass seed beads. She creates amulets, bracelets and earrings for every occasion, including seasonal items like pumpkins , tiny Christmas trees, etc. Nicole Le Roux is an animal artist first and foremost. She does personalized pet portraits. Joellen Chrones works with fused glass, dishes, bowls and plates. The designs are melted into the glass in the kiln so they are food safe and dishwasher safe.
