BUELLTON

This is my first time playing at Standing Sun but I have worked with Quinn before. Quinn is a phenomenal musician and resides in the LA area. He is the music director and pianist for the Steve Tyrell Band. Kevin Winard is from Santa Barbara and is Steve Tyrell's fantastic drummer, he is also the producer of my CD. Together they have toured all over the world including Buckingham Palace, Ronnie Scott's in London, the Jazz Festival in South Africa as well as performing at Cafe Carlyle in Manhattan where they will be continuing a 13 year run from the beginning of Dec through New Years Eve. quinnjmusic.com • kevinwinard.com I am a mother of 5 children and I've resided in the Santa Ynez Valley for over 20 years. After the breakup of my marriage I reinvented myself and became a jazz singer releasing my debut CD in 2007. In 2008 my CD was picked up by the Sinatra Society Japan where it was released and distributed. And in 2012 I toured in jazz clubs with the piano player from my CD project Christian Jacob of the Tierney Sutton Band whom I like to call "my gift from God" because not only is he that good he has also been an incredible mentor to me and believed in me. ~ Mellonie Irvine

THE CYPRESS GALLERY

119 E. Cypress Ave, Lompoc • Open Tue–Sun, 12-4PM www.lompocvalleyartassociation.com

"A WALK THROUGH THE CYPRESS" OCTOBER 2018 • BY TERRY TAYLOR I say a hearty "welcome" to our first rain today and hope we get an abundance this season. I don't want to rain this Saturday and Sunday, though, because "Mural in a Weekend" is scheduled, the first Lompoc community event in "Artober." The following weekend brings us "Lompoc Chalks," supporting the theater restoration, and finally our own "Art Hunt" October 18-21, put on by Lompoc Valley Art Association. This is going to be great fun for the family! Visit Cypress Gallery Facebook page or the LVAA website (see address below) for details. The reception for this event will be held at the gallery on Sunday, October 21st from 2-4 pm, where you and your kiddos can meet "your" artist, view the gallery installation and enjoy some fall refreshments. September's People's Choice Award went to Alan Freeman for his whimsical, colorful acrylic painting "Old Gull Cove." Nice work, Alan. Congratulations.

Vicki Andersen, Vineyard Fence

Oil painter Neil Andersson is the featured artist this month and you don't want to miss this beautiful show. A recent resident of Lompoc, Neil is originally from Washington State and this show features paintings of the northwest and the Lompoc area. Neil's paintings reveal a personal style and aesthetic akin to the plein air movement in Europe in the 19th century and his painting style has been developed and refined through four decades of painting on location. His ethereal landscapes are skillfully done and he is a master of creating calm, comforting scenes. I truly like them all, but my favorite is "Snoqualmie River--North Bend, WA." The rich violets of the water and the lush greens of the surrounding flora make this a special piece. This show will run through October 28th. All things autumn are represented in the main gallery this month. Some of my favorites (it is very hard to choose from such a professional collection) are Vicki Neil Andersson, Snoqualmie River--North Bend, WA. Andersen's acrylic "Vineyard Fence" with bold, golden grape leaves draping over a white wooden fence and Betsee Talavera's "Pumpkin Bonanza" featuring various varieties of the holiday squash. Photographer Jane Kametani's "Pumpkin Patch," two small renderings of fall leaves by Rosalea Greenwood and Linda Gooch's colored pencil "Proud Pumpkin" round out the fall collection. Make Cypress Gallery your go-to gift shop. There is a great variety of small paintings and prints, jewelry, fiber arts, glass, greeting cards and souvenirs created by local artists and artisan crafters. Cypress Gallery is operated by the members of the Lompoc Valley Art Association, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, committed to expanding and supporting access and exposure to the arts in the Lompoc and Santa Ynez Valley. LVAA sponsors arts programs, events, communications, and other efforts that mutually benefit artists, businesses, residents and visitors to our Valley. To learn more about the arts in the Valley, visit our website and like our Facebook page “Cypress Gallery." The gallery is located at 119 East Cypress Avenue, Lompoc. Hours: Tuesday through Sunday 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. 805-737-1129, lompocvalleyartassociation.com .

FEATURED ARTIST & SHOW "PATHWAYS" SEPTEMBER 25 – OCTOBER 28, 2018

The Lompoc Valley Art Association’s Cypress Gallery will be featuring “Theme and Variation: Recent Landscape Paintings”, an artist show by Neil Andersson. The show be on exhibit from September 25 to October 28, 2018. A recent resident of Lompoc, Neil is originally from Washington State and this show will feature paintings of the northwest as well as paintings of the Lompoc area. Included will be several paintings of the coastal area of France where he visited while touring with the Gypsy Jazz group Pearl Django. Neil's paintings reveal a personal style and aesthetic akin to the plein air movement in Europe in the 19th c., and his painting style has been

developed and refined through four decades of painting on location. Moving to larger size canvases, the recent paintings retain the influence of direct observation but are worked in the studio and are taken a step beyond the fleeting impression of the momentary landscape. The colors and forms are nuanced but still retain true to the original natural objects or motif. This show will feature mainly larger works, but included are a group of "miniature" paintings of the California landscape. These are worked a la prima painting and present a more direct approach to the paint quality. They offer a pleasant balance to the rigor of the larger, more complex works. Neil Andersson, Sright Park - Tacoma WA, oil

It should be added that in addition to his life-long love of painting and drawing, Neil has maintained a parallel career as a professional guitarist and can be heard on many of the recordings by the internationally acclaimed jazz group Pearl Django. He received his MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where he studied under Robert Skaggs and Ted Halkin. Additional information about Neil's art and music can be found at www.neilandersson.com, www.pearldjango.com and on Facebook.

Craftsman.

“The artist must be a craftsman, for without the knowledge of the material and the skill with the tools he cannot express his vision. Once there was no division between art and craft; in medieval society painters and sculptures as well as potters and weavers were members of craft guilds. A man was a painter, or a stone mason; his work, his way of life, was central to his identity and recognized as his means of centering and discovering himself.” From: A Way of Working, The Spiritual Dimension of Craft. D.M Dooling.

2nd Saturday Artisans.
