BUELLTON
Kirby Brown was born in East Texas and moved to rural Damascus, Arkansas at age two. His formative years were spent on the farm where his taste for music was fostered, being exposed to gospel, bluegrass, and the classic country his grandfather would strum in the evenings. With the influence of his father, a poet himself, he became interested in reading Whitman and Frost. This fresh form of expression would become the bedrock on which Kirby’s artistic life would be built. After the death of his girlfriend and his best friend, Kirby found an outlet for his pain in writing songs and moved to Dallas. He there began his musical career writing and releasing his first album, Child of Calamity. He has since toured all across America, headlining shows, playing alongside friends, sharing bills/ festivals with artists including Willie Nelson, The Flaming Lips, Leon Russell, and The Avett Brothers. Lompoc Valley Art Association will sponsor a community event October 18 through Oct 21, 2018. We invite the community to “find” pieces of art work that will be “hidden” throughout the downtown area of Lompoc. Participants can keep the art work that they find. Social media will be used to give people clues as to where the art pieces can be found. The event will consist of 3 days of finding the art. On Sunday, there will be a reception, open to all, at the Cypress Gallery, 119 E. Cypress. At the reception, people who found art pieces can meet the artists. This event is open everyone and to all ages. The event is free. "A WALK THROUGH THE CYPRESS" SEPTEMBER 2018 • BY TERRY TAYLOR It never ceases to amaze me at how fast time goes by, and when we get to September, I need to take a deep breath because I know it will get up to lightening speed when we zip to the holidays. At Cypress Gallery we are getting ready for "Artober" and all the art-related community activities coming next month: Mural in a Day by the Mural Society, Chalk Festival to support the Theater renovation project and our own LVAA "Art Hunt." I'll have more info on the Art Hunt next month; I think you and your families will enjoy this one. August's People's Choice Award went to Elizabeth Monks Hack for her oil painting "Stone Pines on South H Street." Congratulations, Beth; the painting is still drawing attention in the gallery. The featured artist for September is glass fusion artist Kristine Kelly, whose statement includes that she came to art "later in life" and by 2015 was learning to make Kristine Kelly, Half Dome in Winter landscapes in glass. She "loves layering glass to create new depths and colors" and she wants her work "to tell a story." These skillfully done pieces do just that. In April she was awarded first place at the National Glass Expo in Las Vegas, so you'll definitely want to visit the Gallery to view her unique work. Her show runs through September 23rd. We have some handsome photography this month, submitted by Tom Chrones, Debby Fuller and Nancy Hall. Tom's "Low Level Run" will keep you guessing, but when you get it, you'll be amazed. Debby's photo of beach grass and an aging wooden fence made me long for the shore. Nancy, whose travels often take her to Africa, has submitted a piece featuring women and children in bright, colorful clothing, entitled "Welcome to Our Village." Further back into the gallery, a botanical watercolor by Diane Reuter featuring birds, bees and butterflies and entitled "Potential," caught my eye. Mikel Naccarato loves seascapes, and his abstract painting style brings additional life to his work, as in his acrylic painting "Another Stormy Day." Chris Jeszeck's "Poppy" in oil, Carol Oliveira, Oaks is simple but powerful, and Lee Hill's acrylic landscape "Hawk's Valley View" is beautiful, featuring our golden hills and green oaks. More hills and oaks are featured in Carol Oliveira's oil painting called, simply, "Oaks." Last, but definitely not least is Valerie deMille's acrylic abstract entitled "Summer Storm." I love it. Cypress Gallery is an outstanding gift and souvenir shop as well as a fine art gallery. There is a great variety of small paintings and prints, jewelry, fiber arts, glass, greeting cards and more.. Cypress Gallery is operated by the members of the Lompoc Valley Art Association, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, committed to expanding and supporting access and exposure to the arts in the Lompoc and Santa Ynez Valley. LVAA sponsors arts programs, events, communications, and other efforts that mutually benefit artists, businesses, residents and visitors to our Valley. To learn more about the arts in the Valley, visit our website and like our Facebook page “Cypress Gallery." The gallery is located at 119 East Cypress Avenue, Lompoc. Hours: Tuesday through Sunday 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. 805-737-1129, lompocart.com .

FEATURED ARTIST & SHOW "PATHWAYS" AUGUST 28 – SEPTEMBER 23, 2018
The Lompoc Valley Art Association’s Cypress Gallery will be featuring “Pathways”, an artist show by Kristine Kelly. The show be on exhibit from August 28 to September 23, 2018. In 1994, Kristine Kelly took a class on glass, from the Santa Barbara Adult Education program, and she was hooked. She loved the luminosity of glass and she began making jewelry using dichroic and opalescent and transparent glass. She also made bowls and plates using molds. In 2015, she took a class on making landscapes with glass and her art glasswork took a new direction. Kristine uses stringers, pieces of cut glass and different sizes of glass frit in her fused pieces. She fires her pieces several times at different
temperatures to achieve a sense of texture and depth. The glass is fired in a kiln reaching temperatures up to 1490 degrees and goes through 2 to 6 firings. Kristine says that “ I love layering glass to create new depths and colors and I want my work to tell a story. I love it when observers tell me that they can imagine walking into one of my pieces and I frequently include a path or steps to help lead them in.” “I am inspired by the nature of marine and plant life on the Central Coast as well as the mountain scenery of the Sierras. Recently, I have concentrated on creating pieces based on California landmarks.” “Working with glass is my passion and I continue to take classes to learn new techniques.” In April, Kristine received a first-place award in glass fusing at the National Glass Expo in Las Vegas for my piece, “Half Dome from Sentinel Bridge”. The show was sponsored by Glass Arts magazine.

Craftsman.
“The artist must be a craftsman, for without the knowledge of the material and the skill with the tools he cannot express his vision. Once there was no division between art and craft; in medieval society painters and sculptures as well as potters and weavers were members of craft guilds. A man was a painter, or a stone mason; his work, his way of life, was central to his identity and recognized as his means of centering and discovering himself.” From: A Way of Working, The Spiritual Dimension of Craft. If you are an artist and want to participate – contact Kathy Badrak at Kbadrak@comcast.net for the application. Artist Kathy Badrak has been creating fine art gourds since 2009. A Basket Weaver and a former Stained-Glass artist, Badrak brings to her Gourd Art the natural fibers and weaving techniques from her basketry and the vibrant colors and lines from her stainedglass work. The wide variety of gourd shapes and sizes allows her to design a variety of art pieces, including: ornaments, bowls, sculpture, vases, and wall art such as masks. Using organically grown gourds, which have been dried for up to one year, she first thoroughly cleans the gourds inside and out. The gourds are then wood burned and carved using both hand and power woodworking tools. To finish her gourds, she uses professional quality acrylic inks, stains, dyes and paints for both environmental and aesthetic reasons. Colors and textures have long been an important part of Kathy's life. Thirty years ago, she began her journey into creating her own artwork with stained glass. She started her own glass business designing leaded glass windows for new constructions. Many of the windows are installed throughout central and southern California. Several of her pieces were published in art books. For a number of years she taught Stained Glass though an Adult Education program. Kathy Badrak
Curious by nature and always willing to experiment, she took a basket class in the early 1990's. This class introduced her to the gathering and the use of many natural materials. She discovered she loved their colors, varieties, and textures. Since then she has continued to weave baskets and teach basketry. In 2009, she attended a series of workshops on weaving baskets and working with gourds. She found that gourds were the perfect medium to in which to express herself. “I love the earthy and natural appeal of gourds and often leave much of the beautiful gourd surface showing in my work. Gourd Art also allows me to continue working with the wonderful fibers and weaving materials I use in my baskets. They allow me to add interesting textures to my work. My style continues to evolve as I learn and experiment with new techniques and materials. Kathy Badrak, gourd with leather trim
Kathy is a member of the Lompoc Valley Art Association, California Gourd Society and the American Gourd Society. Her work has been sold through art galleries, commission work and shows in California. She has won numerous awards in juried shows and has been the featured artist for the Cypress Gallery. Kathy Badrak is a Co-owner of Lavenpine consulting , named after two favorite plants, Lavender and Pinyon Pine. Through Lavenpine, Kathy and her partner teach classes in Basketry, Gourd Art, Ethnobotany, and Nature Awareness to further their goals of connecting people to their environments through education and art.

Wildling Museum Artist Talk Series Presents: Art as Alchemical Portal to nature
Sunday, September 23 • 3-4 pm
Tickets: $5 Members ($10 General Admission) About Susan Rowland Susan Rowland (Ph.D.) is co-Chair of MA Engaged Humanities and the Creative Life at Pacifica Graduate Institute, California and formerly Professor of English and Jungian Studies at the University of Greenwich, UK. She is author of The Ecocritical Psyche, From Agatha Christie Susan Rowland to Ruth Rendell (2001) and, The Sleuth and the Goddess in Women’s Detective Fiction (2015). She is author of a number of books on Jung, gender and literary theory. Her new book on transdisciplinary Jung, Remembering Dionysus, was published in 2017. She is now working on a mystery novel with a triple woman hero as another way of entering the wild. See her website: http://susanarowland.com/
The Wildling Museum of Art and Nature is delighted to announce Susan Rowland’s Artist Talk, ART AS ALCHEMICAL PORTAL TO NATURE: Wilding’s “Nature Imagined” and “Nature Regenerated” in Reconnecting to Our Natural Roots. Through art we embrace and even become nature; we connect to natural roots of being that make us remember that we are part of nature as well as part of culture. Susan Rowland’s talk uses depth psychology and alchemy to show what modern western life has forgotten, ignored or repressed, that the imagination is the most important natural resource, one that connects us to non-human nature as an essential part of our being. Indeed the ancient art of alchemy was a spiritual transformation of psyche into the nature of the cosmos. Alchemy was a dimension of magic, a rite of participation in nature, that has been lost as modernity withdrew, treating nature as without spirit. By contrast modern ideas of archetypes, synchronicity and complexity reveal what alchemists and artists knew, that art is a magical reciprocal dialogue with the nonhuman. Susan will be presenting these ideas from her book, The Ecocritical Psyche, showing art as portal to animated and inspirited nature. To register for tickets, visit http://www.wildlingmuseum. org/artist-talk-art-as-alchemical-portal-to-naturesept-23/, stop in the Wildling, or call 805-686-8315.
