Sources of Energy
Renewable and Non-renewable
What is Energy?
Energy Forms -Heat -Light -Sound -Kinetic (movement) -Chemical -Electrical -Gravitational -Elastic (potential)
Sources of Energy All forms of energy are stored in different ways, in the energy sources we use every day. These sources are divided into 2 groups.
Sources of Energy Renewable
-An energy source that can be replenished in a short period of time.
Non – Renewable
-An energy source that we cannot replace.
-Sun Renewable Energy -Wind -Geothermal -Biomass (plants) -Water
Non-Renewable Energy -Oil
-Coal -Natural Gas -Nuclear
Energy
Without energy nothing happens.
Energy does work! • Work is done when objects are moved or heated. • Energy is never ‘used up’ it is simply converted from one form to another. Can you think of some sources of energy?
Energy does work! • Fuels and food are sources of energy. • Can you think of any examples when energy is converted from one form to another?
Converted Energy
Fuels for generating electricity.
• There are 3 main classes of fuel which can be used to generate electricity: • Fossil fuels, renewable fuels and nuclear fuels.
Converted Energy
Fuels for generating electricity.
• What are fossil fuels? • What are renewable fuels? • How are these fuels used to generate electricity?
Energy is released from the fuel. • Fossil fuels such as gas, coal and oil and renewable fuels such as wood are burnt and heat is generated.
Energy is released from the fuel. • This heat is used to boil water and the steam that is created is used to turn large propellers called turbines. • These turbines then turn electrical generators.
• In addition to these fuels there are other energy sources used to generate electricity. • Can you think of any?
Other energy sources • Solar power: converts the energy of the sun into electricity. • Wind power: Moving air can be used to turn propellers.
Other energy sources • Hydroelectric power: using water. The higher the drop and the greater the drop, the more energy can be created. • Wave power: wind causes waves to form on the water and the motion of these waves can be used to turn generators.
These photographs show ways of getting energy from four different energy sources, can you name them?
10 Tips For Kids One way to help keep Earth healthy is by saving energy and water. Here are 10 easy things you can do at home to help protect the Earth. GET
GREEN NOW!!!! TIPS
WHY
1.
Replace the old light bulbs around the CFLs use up to 75% less energy than house with compact fluorescent light a regular bulb. bulbs (CFLs).
2.
Always turn off electronics when you're not using them – that means the TV, computer, and especially lights.
Electronics use up energy, even when they're in standby mode.
3.
Unplug cell phone chargers when there's no phone plugged in.
Chargers use energy, even when there's no phone on the other end.
4.
Decide what you want to eat before opening the fridge, don't just stand there with the door open.
It takes energy to keep cool air in the fridge. Up to one-third of the cool air escapes every time you open the door.
5.
Don't let the water run when you brush your teeth or wash your face.
Saving water is an important part of protecting the environment.
6.
If you see a faucet dripping, turn it Dripping water can add up and can waste off, or tell your parents to get it more water than you usually use. fixed.
7.
To keep cool – try using a ceiling fan instead of the air conditioner.
8.
Ask your parents to help you plant Shade can cool your house down without a tree to shade your house. using any energy. Find the side of the house that gets the most sun and plant a tree there.
9.
Turn your thermostat down a few Having it a few degrees hotter or cooler will degrees in the winter and up a few make a small difference to you and a big degrees in the summer. difference to the environment. You can always put on different clothes if you're too hot or too cold.
10.
Try not to leave doors open.
A fan uses less energy and can help spread cool air around your room.
Each time you open the door in the summer, warm air can get in. If you keep them closed, it takes less energy to cool the house down.
Batteries To know about appliances that use batteries.
What are batteries? Batteries store electricity for appliances that you can not or do not want to plug in. Batteries can be put in and taken out of appliances. Batteries can “run out of electricity. Some batteries can be recharged (refilled) with electricity.
Batteries Batteries can come in different colours, shapes and sizes ‌
Each appliance has to have the correct battery to work properly.
What appliances can you think of that use batteries?
+ and The + and – signs help you to know which way the battery should be inserted.
If a battery is not put in correctly then the appliance will not work!!!
• Can you put the batteries in the torch properly? How will you know if the batteries have been inserted the right way?
A torch is a useful kind of light. It uses bulb to make light. A torch gets its electricity from batteries. Most torches have electricity batteries..
Which of these appliances do you think need batteries to work?
