FOREWARD Home & fashion textiles are two of the major product categories of Indian exports. One of the constraints faced by the Indian handicrafts sector today is the lack of access to new design trends, forecasts and colours. Indian craftsmen and exporters suffer from a lack of knowledge and understanding of the latest design trends and forecasts as well as their interpretation. Forecast is a major component of growth and development of the handicrafts sector. The handicrafts sector needs major references to update the design needs of thousands of exporters and manufacturers. There is a need to spread awareness of new design and colour forecasts present in the world market, in the Indian crafts industry. This Trends Book on Textiles for 2014 - 2015 brought out by National Centre for Design & Product Development (NCDPD) in association with Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) under the financial suport from Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) , Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India, is an important step towards bringing in fresh ideas and energy into the handicrafts sector. The Trends Book comprises of the latest worldwide inspiration design trends and forecasts in home & fashion textiles. The export market is trend driven and buyers are looking for exciting products, now, more than ever. With the help of this book, craft persons and exporters can explore new ideas, products and designs and customize them to market requirements. The book will also help the craftsmen to understand the national and the international market better and use their creativity to develop new designs in their crafts which are in sync with the international market demand and the latest trends. Release of this book is a step towards development of new design skills and research and development in the handicrafts industry. Preparation of this product specific trends book is a very important segment of publicity and a step towards fulfillment of the need of the new designs & innovative products in the Indian handicrafts sector. They wrapped up their S/S 2014 fair yesterday and if you missed it, here is MunichFabricStart's Spring/Summer 2014 trends for the season: BEAUTY FULL... we position the unbelievably complex beauty of fashion and the fabrics it is made from. Textiles and styles reveal a lot of technique and know-how as well as an artistic extravaganza in the haute-couture manner. What's most exciting is that all this is realized sotto voce. It is not about showing off. It's all about joy, finesse and intelligent realization. A game between high-tech and naturalness, approach and distance, anonymity and decoration offers so much space for staging, art, and surprise.

The creativity of swimwear fabric manufacturers enables us to define 4 key trends for summer 2014, which will be presented in a series of posts.
BEACH NATURE: PLANET EARTH AND RICH ECOSYSTEMS What better than the wealth of nature with its huge resources to dictate the style of 2014? So crowded vegetation, rich plants of the tropical paradise and the luxurious jungle, evoked in an abundance of imposing foliage and majestic flowers and in urban gardens with their perfect flowers and compositions created by man. Well represented too is the animal world, a bigger expression in the new skins and blazing plumage, revisited with a fresh eye but also in the figurative prints of mammals from faraway lands and coloured butterflies. And another inevitable source of inspiration is the submerged world with its rich chromatic palettes of blues/greens, borrowing from crystalline waters and the deepest oceans with their extraordinary flora and fauna, brightly coloured fish and sea horses set against the South Seas with graceful anemones and precious shellfish and coral. And also of course the grand landscapes of nature – luminous beaches of fine sand and unending burning deserts offer beachwear a palette of hot tones and minerals. “Palm trees, coral and sea horses in an attractive palette inspired by the Caribbean… but also the submerged earth with its rich world of fish, shellfish and anemones, the all in one tones of blue, green and coral”.

BEACH EXPLORER: TRAVEL NOTES Beachwear 2014 tours the world of the globetrotter! On the way to rich distant lands with their landscape, culture and inspiring architecture: destination Latin America, the opulent Amazon to the intriguing austerity of Fire Island, before flying off to the East, in the direction of China, Indonesia and the countries of Levant … not forgetting to stop at Egypt, before returning home. A necessary passage to complete colours is a trip to the paradise destinations – from the Caribbean to Hawaii, whilst going through the warm seas in search of lost paradises where heaven meets the sky and sea. This is also the theme of civilisation and folklore, with the encounter of big ethnic groups, the wild and remote tribes, the customs of the world and the distant ways of life. Here are symbols and tribal pictograms for dynamic prints but equally secular techniques originating in Indonesia (batik), Africa (tie & dye) and for astonishing effects Japan (origami) for original designs.
And at last a small detour to the urban jungle with inspiration from the architectural lines of huge buildings with patterns and colours derived from the urban culture.

BEACH-RETROFUTURISM: A LEAP IN TIME A dive into the fashion of last century with a chic return to the past: from the frenzy of the mad years to the revival after the war and the glamour of the pin-up decade, without forgetting the free spirit, pop and rock of the 60s and 70s. Inspiration is resolutely borrowed from wallpaper designs and tapestries, current artists, interior deco right through to the more refined prints inspired by the famous Hermès square. Fashion is an eternal point of departure, always reinvented with a modern look and the beachwear of tomorrow echoes these futuristic impulses.
On the technical side of fashion welcome to the new three dimensional effects, to trompe-l’œil more realistic than nature, to the digital chromatic, almost unreal, palettes and also the futuristic iridescence, galaxies of sparking stars and glimmering moons. And this does not include the high tech developments which push back even further the limits of technical progress.

Colors are distorted and mediated by cutting, breaking and interfering with the surface of the textiles, creating grids, panels and other geometrical shapes, 3D, airstuffed and mesh techniques are put into play to emulate architectural structures. Excessively even and smooth surfaces mask the tactility of the textile. The fabrics are generallly light-weight, crap and cool to the hand, and high-performance materials are imperative.

Showcase for textile trends Fall/Winter 2014/15 from ISPO TEXTRENDS FORUM 2013
Focus on innovations, trends and quality. Fibers, fabrics and other component materials play an incredibly important part in the sporting goods industry presenting trends and developments that will not be available to consumers until about 2 years later.
All component product manufacturers were welcomed to apply with their products (must provide samples and technical specifications) matching these textile trends in one of the 6 categories. This new area concentrates as much as possible on innovation, trends and quality.
Despite this, it is hard for designers and product managers to source the latest developments. This is the reason why ISPO MUNICH decided to develop a new area showing the best available component products in a concentration nobody else offers.
A jury of independent experts examined all entered products and selected those with the highest degree of innovation. The selected companies benefit from an exclusive presentation in the very unique ISPO Textrends Forum, the must-see platform for all sportswear, fashion and accessories designers and product managers. And this is only one of several benefits which will accompany this opportunity. ISPO Textrends Forum is the center of component product innovation.
In order to achieve this focus, we divided the area into 6 product categories (First Layer, Second Layer, Accessories, etc.). In addition, we identified 5 different textile trends in cooperation with experienced trend experts.

Categories – where can you find innovations? Innovative component products are divided into 6 different categories defined by well-known industry standards. First layer Next to the skin fabrics for technical underwear, with shaping, support, thermal or moisture management performance. Softness, comfort, anti-bacterial or ecofriendly properties are added values. Second layer Fabrics with insulation properties. Fleece fabrics, lightweight protective fabrics, performance linings, stretch or non-stretch; they can be used for maximum thermal characteristics. Natural fibers including wool and cotton through to eco-friendly and sustainable fibers including cellulosics.
Fibers Traditional feather down, hollow and cross-section man-made fibers, insulations. Tapings Tapes for sewn and heat-welded applications. Reflective, UV resistant, windproof and waterproof tapes. Visions for the Textile Industry One goal of ISPO MUNICH is to be a gateway for future trends. In cooperation with trend experts ISPO MUNICH studied various global trends with influence on the textile industry and its products. In combination with the defined trend colors and 5 more detailed textile trends. These mega trends provide a good vision where the future of textiles will take us. ISPO MUNICH is very pleased to have the opportunity to share these visions for Fall/Winter 2014/15 with the textile industry and to use these trends as a basic guideline for ISPO Textrends Forum 2013. The mega trends show visions that are not specific to one particular area but will influence the entire textile chain right down to the consumer. The color cards and the textile trends result from a range of influences, from consumer behavior to the global economy. Film, music, social media, art and many other activities are reflected in these trends. They form a basic guideline how new developments and innovations of ingredient products will be shown, presented and highlighted at ISPO Textrends Forum 2013.

Interactive Warmth without the weight, the latest textile trend for thermal regulation. From non-woven insulation to featherweight thermal knits, the ecological take on insulation and conserving body warmth during the most arduous of winter sports continues to be a leader.
Conserving body heat with the help of base layers, linings, soft shells or outer shells continue to be an integral part of the high performance active wear sector for the winter. Efficient thermal properties in new, lighter weight qualities drive the market, allowing the wearer to perform to their best capabilities even in the coldest of climes. While warmth without the weight is crucial to performance, sustainability is also a key issue; eco-friendly fibers, insulation and finishes in optimized thermal qualities envelop the wearer in a cocoon of insulation. In the thermal wear sector the trend ranges from a nature-oriented look in the form of classic insulation to the more futuristic effect of foil prints and the latest generating of heat-preserving membranes. Thermal membranes capture the body heat with foilbased coatings and linings. A comfortable touch is achieved with the help of liners and base layers made with materials with brushed surfaces to thermal micro fleece. Traditional feather down is featured alongside new generation featherweight micro knits in conventional and circular knits. As thermal function is a key issue, multifunction characteristics like quick-dry to moisture management further enhance performance.

Synergetic Bold, bright and vibrant, a symbiotic relationship between the natural and man-made world results in harmony. Color is crucial in teaming up with the high performance fabrics ensuring the wearer achieves his/her goal.
Bold, bright and energetic, a symbiotic relationship between the natural and manmade world results in a harmonious effect. The production of virgin synthetics all the way to the dyeing process is redesigned with the help of new, eco-friendly methods, as reduced water and energy consumption become an integral part of the textile chain. Recycled synthetics are also improved, delivering integrated performance in the form of anything from moisture management to cool touch, quick drying, antibacterial and anti-microbial features. In the natural fiber sector wool and cotton play a pivotal role, improved with the help of nano-technology finishes that add water repellent characteristics and added protection to garments. The use of synthetics is key to this trend, basically delivering the vibrant tones this energetic spirit embodies. Synthetics, both virgin and recycled mimic the touch of nature on dry hands contrasting with the glossy synthetic spirit. Prints draw inspiration from denim and textured wovens are applied to smooth fabrics with a membrane finish, offering optical texture. Elastane/spandex and mechanical stretch provide base stability and stretch to garments, while the inclusion of prints delivers a bold statement. Mock and true mesh features are inserted for ventilation in high performance pieces. Heat-bonded seams and laser cutting create anti-roll finish for a tighter fit.

Mutualism The inherent performance of natural fibers advances to the forefront thanks to new spinning and finishing processes. Nano-technology inspires finishes, while synthetics focus on the recycled sector, delivering the top-rate function conventional qualities are associated with. There is a growing demand for wellness and health apparel, as fabrics embrace, protect and nourish the wearer.
The inherent performance and touch of natural fibers teams up with nanotechnology-based functional aspects, as wool and cotton are featured alongside the new sustainable cellulose fibers including Modal and Cupro. The wellness factor and “health wear� aspect of this trend is delivered directly to the skin. Body-embracing fabrics enhance the wearer’s feeling of wellness to increase performance during low-level workouts. There is increased interest in microencapsulation, a direct carrier of vitamins and lotions released onto the skin through friction, which adds further value. Nano-tech finishes complement the natural nuances of this trend, including high-performance finishes such as water-proofing and stain-resistance. Enjoying the great outdoors is an obvious boost for this trend, as the focus shifts towards environmentally conscious textile chemicals, fibers and processes. There is a balance between wellness and performance, a harmony between high-level function and environmentally friendly textile processes. Natural fibers with inherent performance are improved with the help of innovative finishes, giving them equal opportunity next to performance-packed synthetics. Surfaces are soft and malleable, brushed or cut for a snug fit and warm touch, and are typically dry whether derived from a synthetic or natural source. The new area to watch on the active wear market is the development of biofabrics, derived from plants, environmentally friendly but performing on par with their synthetic counterparts. Kinetic Energy Performance-enhancing fabrics ensure prolonged activity, energy conservation and reduced fatigue during a range of high-energy activities. The mood is defined by the latest high-compression knits to core stability fabrics, by including true and mock mesh fabrics for detail and ventilation inserts combined with the latest developments on the functional fiber and finishing front. These fabrics excel in the active wear.
The energy conservation and muscle protection features not only enhance the performance of high-end athletes during competition, but also help the consumer stay on track by delivering energy regeneration and accelerated performance instead of hitting the wall. Compression fabrics, in warp and circular knits continue to gain market share, increasing the staying power in the most demanding of sports. Synthetic and elastane/spandexbased, bonded seams and flawless surfaces allow for laser cutting to create a clean-cut finish and bonded, flat-locked and taped seams. The next generation of compression fabrics offer a softer feel and comfort fit than the original, with contrasting fabrics inserted in targeted zones to deliver accurate performance where it is needed. Compression socks also follow this trend, with more comfortable fit yet still providing the require muscle support. The best of performance fabrics used in second layers and outer shells are becoming lighter, yet still deliver the desired function even for the most ambitious of athletic consumers. Safety gear, relevant in snow boarding and skiing, is becoming lighter as flexible 3-layer, impact-energyabsorbing fabrics are used. Edges feature flexible zippers contouring the body, stretching and moving in harmony with the second-skin fabrics. Threads are luminous and bright in flat-lock stitches, or inserted piping. Laser cutting not only works with densely constructed fabrics but also with edges that can be bonded.

Voyager Visionary in its delivery, this textile trend takes us on a futuristic journey, delivering fashion-led inspiration for the existing market with the help of the next generation of fabrics that will define the active wear sector of the future.
A visionary approach to the next generation of performance fabrics as new technologies emerge. High-performance fabrics and finishes are incredibly light with dense surfaces and jacquard effects. Featherweight fabrics appear, but don’t be deceived as they have the strength of an aramid fabric. Enhanced performance combined with reduced textile processing and garment production methods are used with bonding and molding techniques playing a role. There are heat generating, responsive fabrics that alert you to increased body temperature or outdoor climatic conditions. NASA-inspired, fabrics can be misleading: they appear like an opaque membrane, when, in fact, they feature a 3-layer laminate packed full of performance. Artificial intelligence comes to light with the help of embedded sensors, miniature solar panels and reactive performance readers integrated into the fabric measuring blood pressure and body temperature. The ultimate ripstop fabrics are used, filmy to the touch but very protective in their finished state. This is the future of active wear, as we boldly go where no one has gone before! Back to the present, this trend will also inspire prints and surface effects for existing performance fabrics as 3D digital prints refresh the look, and prismatic and holographic effects catch the winter sun. Reflective resin prints and logo details, embossed and calendared prints, as well as surface effects, high gloss membranes appear in liners, base layers and outer shells. Beautiful scalloped edge detailing, like these options from Valentino, are a fun way to accentuate shoulders and hemlines for Spring ’15. If your client or customer can’t afford engineered printing or details, get creative and interpret the trend in a fun way, like the print seen above (top-right) from Schatzi Brown. Surrounding it you’ll also see a few other scalloped edge images that I thought you may find inspiring and beneficial to your work.
