My name is Sanxing Zhao. I’m writing to apply for the junior architect. I have been a follower of your firm for many years, and it would be thrilling if I can work in such an outstanding architecture firm. I believe my academic strengths and working experience will be a positive addition to your team on the way of achieving the organization’s goals.

02. Krakahn Compound Beings

I finished the MSD-AAD program at the University of Pennsylvania in Dec 2019 and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture at NJ Tech. I am currently on an F1 visa with OPT (which permits working lawfully in the United States for three years).

03. The Hidden Thrth __ Rashomon Club Design

I strongly believe that my skill set would fulfill the requirement of this job. I work with care and attention to detail. I work hard to solve problems. This is how I completed my previous projects (both at school and at intern work) at a high standard. My project, ‘Harakahn,’ is going to be included in the upcoming ‘Pressing matters’ published by PennDesign. Working as an intern in Higrade and Dianzhu gave me experience on practical projects when I was able to apply my Revit and Rhino skills. In addition, I learned to work with clients when I was in CAZA. During the final weeks of my internship, I was assigned to take full charge of the SD of Siargao Condo Hotel as the fulltime colleague was out of office. I overcame challenges and conducted negotiation with the client. Another takeaway I had was time management in the multi-projects’ scenario. Therefore, I’m a good fit for the junior architect position. It has always been my dream to dedicate myself to making the city a better place through architecture design and making architecture the best media that connect people, and I look forward to working with this fantastic team. A copy of my resume and portfolio are enclosed for your reference. Also, you can find my portfolio with animations included trough this link: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1S1lQjyyRuJb-SXd4I-9xKVr8JIa-jGatQOkYCaslUUU/edit?usp=sharing. 01. Mneme In Acqua Piscina Mirabilis is in the Municipality of Bacoli, close to Lake Miseno (the ancient Misenum), over a hill which faces the Bay of Naples. It was realized during the Augustan Age. During the war with Pompeius, in fact, the son of Caesar ordered the construction of a harbour complex in the west side of Puteoli (Pozzuoli), named Portus Julius, which became the headquarter of the western Mediterranean war fleet. In order to feed with water the militar base, Augustus decided to build an aqueduct from the Serino mountain to the Lake Miseno, which had, as terminal point of the path, a reservoir, today well known as Piscina Mirabilis. To optimise the Roman ruin, we decided to show great respect to the existing existence at first place by building up a new visitors'v center above the ruin. The circulation of the guests are slightly changed, in the meanwhile, becomes more convenient. The guest cneter includs a meeting room, a adminstration center, and an activity place for multiple function. The platform holds these three main rooms, which can also be used as a protential spot for visitors activities.

The Upper Visitors' center and the renewed ruin are connected structurally by the steel support goes all the way down to the walkway before it wanders around the roof of the upper center. Lights and water are brought by the structure from the top to the bottom basin.

As the Piscina Mirabilis used to be an aqueduct, we would like water still be inside this charming Roman ruin. In that case, we decided to design a path above the water basin, where art works can be placed between or on those platforms.

03. The Hidden Truth Rashomon, one of the famous movies in the movie history, directed by Kurozawa Akira, tells a story of a murder but always escape from the truth. Though method like this, Kurozawa transfer a information of words can not be believed. The information provides me inspirations from two aspects: the truth and the human beings. So in this project, I am trying to translate the movie Rashomon in an architectual language, creating a spce for people to get a deeper understand of the movie by utilizing these two elements. The truth is hidden in the movie, so we can use the strategy to create ambiguous spaces to hide the truth of the whole space. As for the human beings, since we are animals with self conscious, once te truth is delivered from us, the truth can no longer be seen as a objective truth any longer. In this way, how the visitor experience the whole space needs to be designed.

Rashomon Club An attemptation to translate the movie Rashomon into the architecture A personal work (8-week individual work) Summer 2017

RASHOMON Rashomon is directed by the famous Japanese director Kurosawa, filming completed in 1950. The main story of the story adapted from the Japanese writer Akutagawa Ryunosuke's novel "Bamboo Grove" and "Rashomon Gate" describes a warrior and his wife on a long journey by the robber intercepted and tied up, his wife was raped by robbers; the scene and Part of the story is from Akutagawa Ryunosuke's "Rashomon." The film expresses the meaning of "people can not be trusted" through the different descriptions of many people on this event. The film opens on a woodcutter and a priest sitting beneath the Rashomon city gate to stay dry in a downpour. A commoner joins them and they tell him that they have witnessed a disturbing story, which they then begin recounting to him. The woodcutter claims he found the body of a murdered samurai three days earlier while looking for wood in the forest; upon discovering the body, he says, he fled in a panic to notify the authorities. The priest says that he saw the samurai with his wife traveling the same day the murder happened. Both men are then summoned to testify in court, where they meet the captured bandit Tajumaru , who claims to have set the samurai free after encountering him in the forest.

OBSERVATION, EXPERIENCE & HUMANITY

羅 生 門

In the movie, Kurosawa's photographic techniques used in the trial of criminals are very much appreciated. Throughout the trial, the face of the judge was never seen in the footage, and the protagonists pointed their faces directly at the camera during the presentation of the case, at which point Kurosawa indefinitely pulled the audience and the movie straight away In a certain sense, it has strengthened the sense of substitution. This approach allowed me to find a reliable basis for the translation of this movie into an architectural form that empowers people to experience the translation process .by enhancing the experience of the movie through the unique spatial experience of architecture

THE HIDDEN TRUTH

The heterogeneous shell structure used to express the film's kernel is placed inside the cuboid space, whose existence virtually alters the original cuboid space and creates a completely different spatial experience. The shell here is like a medium of spatial transformation, and the original space becomes ambiguous under its influence. At the same time, people have become experientialists from the perspective of the original observer, deepening their understanding of this transition.

In the history of art, the beginning of contemporary art has some kind of Platonism. Abstract artists think the "seeing things" that are directly expressed by classical art are not the essence of the world. There are more "real" things under the appearance - this is what the painters like Picasso tried to show on the screen. However, Akira Kurosawa has taken another path here: the closer it is to the "truth," the less it is displayed, and the entire film is centered on the "false" appearance. In that case, a hidden truth is created, or to be spacific, the truth is hidden. Everytime we think that we are apporaching to the truth wil be found to be a failure, and every clues in the film leads the audience all the way to 4 indicidual endings, however, none of those endings is indicated as the true ending of the film by Arkira Kurosawa , creating an atmosphere of unknown. As a result, it restored the movie to some narrative essence, allowing the film narrative to exist merely as the narrative itself: obscuring the boundaries between the audience and the event, and blurring the event itself, independent of the film language, directing the director's intention . In a sense, the montage in the film has departed from the task of "narrating events" and completely serves to grasp and control the audience's psychology.

Here, I try to use another more constructive voice to describe the film's core, that is, the transmission of the truth to the human unrecognizable, and the root cause of this theory lies in the media of truth - people, with Strong subjectivity. In this case, the demander of the truth is a human being, but the transitive person is also a human being. The truth begins to become ambiguous after being transmitted. Therefore, the truth is inevitable under such conditions of transmission.

The methods that the movie Rashomon took are totally opposite to normal suspense films. The narrative purity is even on the road to anti-narrative: counterfactual, anti-result, anti-cause; Thus, Kurosawa eventually discovered the essence of the "movie narrative" and showed it in the "Rashomon" in an all-round and vivid way and expressed his profound humanistic concern. The the important thing is not "what happened", but "what happened to people ", so in this movie, the "anti-truth" method helps the audience focusing on the characters and what they did, then through their performance, transfering the main idea of the movie.

DESIGN STRATEGY The 'Club' The existence of 4 characters forms the main structure of the movie

The observation of one character added, the first class plot is created

The second class plot appears when all the characters are involved in one event

Four individual events eventually lead the way to four different endings

To fully transfer the movie into a physical existence in the level of architecture, I decide to endue it with a function as a museum. But here I name it The Rashomon Club, for the reason that in my perspective, an ordinary museum for movie is too boring because it is a unique movie that worth deep thinkings. So things can be quite differet in this design. The club means that not only the newcommers, but the movie lovers can gather together in this building to have conversations or to remind themselves of the movie. So in the design, not only the main exhibition space, but a affliated tower is designed to offer enough rooms for these people to enjoy the movie. How to transfer The most confusing part of the movie is that it is aimed to argue about the truth of a murder but during the movie, it has always been escaping from talk about what the truth is. When it comes to the building design, I decide create a space of ambiguous. In this space, there exist more than one kind of environments, of which has a totally different space experience. So when they are put together, I will make some connections between them to let visitors in those different environmnets sense the fact that there exist other kind of space which they do not know. To make the felling of ambiguous 'real', the connection space must be not evident to make the people in one environmnet can not get an overall information of the other. Strategy like this will also make visitors more interested in finding out what other spaces looks like. Tear Apart In terms of how to show exhibits and the film, I choose to tear them apart, make them seperate in their own exhibiting spaces. So when visitors are in these spaces, the informations will gradually be collected by them to make it whole, against with the narrative techniques of Kurozawa's movie.

ELEMENTS The main body of the building can be basicly defind as a combination of 6 elements: the central cimena, the rotating ramp, the shell, the exhibition gallery, the grid structure and the turss structure. The first 3 form the inner system while the 4 and 5 form the outer one, making the building under a clear structure system. Next to the main body is a thin tower and the access gallery connecting them together. The tower is consist of a vertical transportation system and some office space to serve the main body. So physically the tower is designed hidden to the main body.

Human beings are unable to be honest with themselves about themselves. They can't talk about themselves without embeliishing. -Akira Kurosawa

04.Story Incubator High-rise building, one of the treasure that human beings make, is doomed to be a place full of stories, for it cotains a large number of population within a relatively small vertical space. In this project, the building is aimed to provide office spaces for both campus users and outcommers.Different from ordinary office buildings, I choose to maximum the potential of a high-rise building for its ability to incubate stories, by using strategy of free section. In this building, verious kinds of activity spaces are arranged vertically, providing stages for different stories. Before the design studio, I took a week on site research, including a questionnaire to find out what kind of activity spaces is needed in tye campus. Those spaces are setted vertically in the high-rise building, fullfill the building with different possibilities.

Before getting into the design, I took several questionnaires in the campus, trying to find out what kind of activities that is the user of the campus most wanted. Sample respondents include teachers, working staff, students, citizens from nearby communities. After the servey, I list 12 most popular needs and pick 9 of them to be the central part of my design

THE BIRTH OF THE BUILDING

Facing the axial wire

Basing on the central urban district in Nanjing, the site is encompassed by the Zhongshan Narth road and Xinmofan road, two of the most essential main road in the history. Meanwhile, we discovered a historical axile wire about 100 years ago in our site. Consequently a new axile wire is designed to bound three districts in the campus tightly basing on the old one. When it comes to the high-rise building design, I decide to put it on the end of the axis for the sake of reaching the climax of the touristing route. The building is divided into two individual towers of different offices , with five differet types of space inside the hollow middle, serving as different publical function. On one hand tourists can have direct access to these public areas, on the other aspect, the public spaces link the two towers together, transfering it to an ideal working place for everyone inside.

Entrance for offices

Give the way

Entrance for visitors

Vertical traffic for offices

Vertical traffic for visitors

The entrance to the building is divided into two parts: one is for visitors which lead them directly to the second floor; those permanent users of the building attain access from for cornor of the tower, where core-tubes exists. The entrances are on the two other sides of the building on the ground floor. As for the visitors, two elevators carry them directly to public spaces on different levels. Different types of area are independent from each other unless using the elevator, whereas they obtain their own transport system.

Located on the top floor of the building, the swimming pool enjoys a great view of the whole city skyline, The top floor is designed higher than the other floor to provide the pool a pleasant space experience. Under the swimming pool are equiptment rooms, a gym, and a open space for rock climbing. These spaces form a virtical sports field for both the building user and the campus user, for both the office eleator and the visitor can reach the sports field.

The entertainment center consists of a look out room and an activity sphere. The cubiod space of the center is to provide a space for the user to enjoy a good city view, while they can have chat or do some reading in the quiet place. The activity sphere is free for both the officers users and the visitors. Verious kinds of activities can be held in the sphere.

The meeting center is located in the central part of the building, including two public meeting room along with the platform on their roofs. The two meeting rooms are stretched out from the two office tower, providing rooms for office users to exchange ideas. They are also accessable for the visitors for the elevators can reach them as well. The center also creates a atrium of wide space, making it a perfect place for activities.

Right beneath the big platform is the art gallery. For the population of the campus is mainly consist of art and architecture students, a gallery is a good choice for both exhibition or students' work show. The gallery is in the shape of a spinning tube, with platforms interspersed in it. At the end of the path is a stairway hall, for the need of speech or seminar. During the path of enjoying the gallety, one can also enjoy a good city view.

The big sphere theater is setted between the platform of the third floor and the art gallery, for the reason that activites take place in the theater have a peak flow of people. Also, function like theater can attract a large amount of people from the site. The theater has two exit along the rounded ramp wound around it. Also the ramp links the two towers together, enabling towers to provide auxiliary spaces for the treater

Located on the ground floor of the building is the main hall. The hall is formed by the arc stair way for visitors. The space of hte main hall is wide and high enough for holding events or exhibitions. Surrounding the hall are several auxillar y rooms and some VIP rooms for comming visitors. Above the hall is the service center for visitors, with functions like cafe, shop and a small library.

05.Within Orders Market and orders are like fish and water, from the early days of human beings they are stick together tightly. But is order that makes a market good? If so, where is the balance of it? The progjcr is an antique market design based on a space typology from my early study. The typology comes from the servey of two antique markets located in the Nanjing City. In the typology, I will explain how to use the right power of order to control a market while maintain its freedom The reason why I choose the antique market in china is that such kind of market with small minority can best demonstrate how the space works in a market, for large market will difinatly be influenced by plenty of elements like capital, government policy, social theory and so on, making it even more complex. But antique market is small and stable(exist for long time in China), making it a perfecct research object for my perfect space typology of market theory.

New Market An antique market design based on the market space typology theory A personal work (8-week individual work) Autumn 2017

ORDER BENEFITS MARKET Market behavior is a natural evolution of human behavior in the development. In the early days of humanity, this market was not much different from social gathering. With the development of the degree of civilization, the market began to exist as an economic act, and from this moment onwards, order intervention is inevitable. Especially to the modern civilization, including the improvement of the political system and economic system, the market will receive multiple restraints and no longer free development. At the same time, the market in one city receives the restrictions of the material and non-material conditions of the city. Here, I only talk more about the market at the level of space, social or economical elements are only the appetizer. At the start, the market behavior happens, people gethered in a certain place. Gradually, the space will be definded as the market place, forming a ambigious constriction to the market. Then orders begin to intervene the market, making the market space under some ceitain order. So it seems that the order makes a good market, for it can provide a safty and pleasant, but for the markect on the architecture level, how to design a market space with the consideration of order, and how powerful the order is or what the order is still remains ambigious. Here, by doing researches on two antique market in Nanjing, I am trying to form the theory and apply it to an actual project.

PRESENT SITUATION Antique market is one of the form of market in chinese history. The reason I pick up them as the research objects is that such kind of market possess a small amount of audience, which means the variables of them on the aspect of social and economical are less than other regular market forms, making it a great object on space form research.

Overorder

Without a certain order the market space will collapse

So in my perspective, it is order that makes a good market and all we need to do is to find a balance of it. In general, I decide to use 5 elements to define a good market space:Seperated Platform, Centual Order, Hidden grid, and Connecting Space. In this space typology for marketing, the market is seperated into two (or more) parts, trying to satisfied different marketing behaviors of very different needs. Here I list a free market and a ordered market, and seperate them into different planes. Then comes how to control the market while maintain its freedom. In this typology, a powerful centual order is designed to create a great influence of space, contriling the behavior of other spaces. Accompanied with it is the hidden grid, aiming to strenghten the control of spaces. Also, the grid means equality, indicating that architects should use elements of same source to design all the spaces to maintain the nature of justice of the market, avoid the market lose control. The connecting space also possess a similar meaning, providing physical access between different platforms, reducing the sense of hierarchy. The connecting space can also be seen as a second class space order, help control the market space.

Firstly, a hight control line is setted, basing on the hight of the ancient city wall of Nanjing. Under the control of it, the market can not be designed higher than the line, not only considering to maintain the status of the city wall, but prevent the tourists on the wall from a city view blocked by the building.

Based on the ideal market space theory,I decided to put it into practice on a actual project. The project is located in the old town in Nanjing, serving as a antique market. In the p o r j e c t , I w i l l m a ke adjustments accrding to the actual situation of the site, ultilizing all the elements to proof my basic theory.

Market behavior is a natural evolution of human behavior in the development.

THE MARKET PLATFORM On the market platform, traders are arranged in booths of different scales. Those booths are designed in 4 kinds of size in order to satisfied different kinds of forms of sale. The booth can also be divided into smaller size, which makes them flexible. The central orders are in the form of functional public facilities setted in the center part of the platform. Including the

THE FREE MARKET virtical traffic core, the service center, the auction hall and the consulting center, while the hight of which are higher than booths around. So in this way,the market space are controled by the center space in the level of both space and function. The patio also helps control the market by creating pause and forming squares between booths. In general, all the architectual elements, like booths, public facilities and patios are setted under a regular grid.

On the Free Market, treaders have a free space for their marketing behaviors. But the free trade environment are still under the order. The centual space is also designed to be public functional facilities, and in the meanwhile, by making full use of the column net, lights are setted on certain columns, indicating the market places in the daytime and constrain the space for marketing behaviiors in the night.

The patio on this floor also helps. For they can provide a pleasant environment for spaces surrounding them, treaders or guests are also likely to gather around them. So under these three orders, the free martket will not be easily out of control. By introducing the urban traffic net into the market, the first floor is divided into the parking lot and the free market directly, making it easy for the recognition of the border of both the market and the parking lot.

06. Sagrada Familia Parameters After the second digital blast, a new idea of the definition of the composition of the architecture is aroused. Meanwhile, the studio is aimed to find out a new relationship between the passangers and the logistic system. Since in current time, the air transportation industry can earn more profits by cargo transportation rather than human transportation. Under this circumstance, we start to predict a future that the cargo transportation becomes way much important than passangers. Under this context, we combine those two concepts together in the studio project to develop a new typology for the future airport terminal.

Sagrada Familia+ A spacial research of future airport terminal based on logistic system 2018 MSD-AAD Studio Project Co-Worker: Liz Chen Autumn 2018

Columns, Cellings, Gaudi Sagrada Familia, designed by Gaudi in the 19th Century, is well known for its epic spacial quality and wonderful decoration. In the first studio of MSD-AAD program, as a presesdent of the project, we are focusing on the church itself including the spacial quality, detials and how Gaudi designed it. As the research goes, we are attracted by how Gaudi utilize the concept of the transition and bifurcation to make the structure as a whole. The relationship between colums and the celling especailly, contains the most intersting part of the concept

What can be count as an element of an architecture? The columns? Bricks? Walls? cellings and slabs?

Bifurcation&Transition

Basing on a perfect model of the transition of force, we discovered that the form and shape of the columns and cellings shares the similar model of the force one. the transition and bifurcation also happens on the shape of them.

In this project, basing on the theoretical idea token from the second digital blast, we choose to believe that the elements is defiened only by the designer. Like the combination of the wall and a single brick, plus maybe a window far away on the wall can be counted as one basic element composing the whole arhitecture.

As a starting point, we tear the component of the structures apart to create different bifurcation typology.

The logestic system in the aitport is designed based on a spacial typology of "small, big and poche". Which is to say, as the develpoed Gaudi elements interactivating with each other as components of the terminal, except for the transition from one to another, gaps, or poche appears. By using these existing spacial resurces, we decided to make utilize of the huge spaces as storage place and smaller spaces as transfer places or space for staffs or visitors. Meanwhile, poshes are designed as hidden spaces for cargo transportation. Under this strategy, cargoes amd visitors are invisible for wah other, but can be sensed by the spac transfprmation of the building itself.
