As designers we are confronted with the issue of contemporary development in the present urban fabric and the management of the past. The fragment is defined as the part which post exposure, constitutes a non-organic urban subset within the urban hypertext. An aesthetic approach to reality or a potential for planning? The fragments potentially constitute the raw material of a continuously updated design process. They confer significance and quality to space, act as capacitors of meaning and memory despite the fact that they lie inert towards contemporary necessities. Three characters are introduced: the wanderer, the scholar and the designer. A circular pattern of stimuli/analysis/praxis is completed, so as to define future Design objectives, that should concentrate on the creation of open structures that correlate heterochronous fragments to the evolution of the city and its inhabitants.
