Anya Caliendo
E
ntering into the world of Anya Caliendo’s atelier is a truly magical journey through a treasure trove of fabulous creations. Fairytale elegance and whimsical glamour are stitched into each hand crafted masterpiece. Born in Russia, Anya Caliendo was immediately drawn to the dramatic flair of the Romanovs as her memories were filled with inspirational images of royalty adorned with luxurious feminine hats. In addition to the rich cultural history of Russia, she was later profoundly influenced by the cosmopolitan energy and culturally diverse opportunities that she found in NYC. After receiving her training in millinery arts, Anya then embarked on her exciting journey to open her very own atelier . Located just 40 minutes outside of Manhattan in the town of Babylon, Anya Caliendo’s atelier is the home to her unique collections that are truly works of art. As she focuses strong attention to the creation of each masterpiece, Anya prefers to create one of a kind pieces or small quantities in addition to artistic collaborations and custom projects. When it comes to materials, she chooses to craft with only the highest quality fabrics, usually imported from Italy, the United Kingdom and France; favorites include velour felt, hand painted Italian silks, silk velvet and tweed. Each collection stands out for their use of vibrant colors, luxurious textures and fantastical intricacies. It’s evident to see Anya’s gift for design, dedicated to unique feminine elegance. Her debut Collection “Je Ne Regrette Rien” (“No Regrets”, 2008) inspired by the aroma of vintage perfume, black and white cinema, Paris and the feeling of being in love, is just stunning and so remarkably glamorous. Her second collection - “Russia Divine Tribute” of Russian influenced treasures, drew its inspiration from the memories of Anya’s grandmother, an incredible beauty and the single most powerful inspiration in her life. Her third Collection, “The Secret Lives of Dolls” debuted in September of 2010 for the upcoming Spring-Summer 2011 Season and was inspired by magical fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen who believed that things around us have their own secret life. Anya is particularly excited about the collection and pronounces that it as her best ever.

The Secret Lives of Dolls
“Several month ago I had to put away in the attic boxes with my daughter’s favorite dolls. My daughter Anastasia turned 15 and her old dolls were no longer of any interest to her. And so, while packing them in the boxes, I had a funny thought that, perhaps, they too have a secret life. I tried to imagine what it would look like and before I knew it I almost believed that with a stroke of a midnight the dolls I packed away come to life. They get into my wardrobe, try on my shoes and my jewelry, they try on my perfume and steal chocolates from the box in the kitchen, they play with pearls... and that is exactly how my third Collection was born”

Fashion Collaboration
T
his fall step beyond bold accessories and be downright ferocious. Candace Ang and Margarita Saplala have teamed up with an unbelievable collaboration. Their modern take on prehistoric elements, including not only spears, arrowheads and chunky stones but also and above all strikingly adorable dinosaurs with style. We are now lucky to see this exciting collaboration for the second season in a row. The perfect pairing: Candace Ang noted for her flare with incorporating non tradition materials into her dramatic jewelry designs and Margarita Saplala creator of her fabulous trendy line of clothing and lively signature prints. Margarita Saplala Margarita Saplala was born in Mailam Philippines and moved to Chicago with her family when she was 2 years old. Margarita launched her eponymous line in 2006. Starting with mixed media such as prints and embroidery to create a ten piece collection of unique tee shirts and jersey dresses. The first sample she handmade in her east village apartment. The collection was instantly picked up by the hip downtown New York City boutiques. In 2008 the line grew into a wider selection of silk dresses and separates, focusing on her original prints. The collection continues to grow and diversify every season. She has now sold to select boutiques around the US as well as Barney’s COOP , Tomorrowland in Japan and Harvey Nicholas in Dubai. Her printed dresses have become well known as prints for the “non-girly girl” The mix of prints and colors in one outfit presents a way of dressing that is fresh and playful yet uncomplicated. www.margaritasaplala.com Candace Ang Not afraid to challenge the conventions of jewelry design by using fabric and hand-sewn details to craft her signature statement necklaces, LA-based designer Candace Ang has gained a strong cult following for her edgy meets romantic designs. It was the Vancouver native’s background in clothing design that has inspired her to get experimental with her love of jewelry, dabbling with materials like ribbon, satin, and silk as her inspiration. The result was dramatic fashion forward pieces, like her Swarovski crystal encrusted silk charmeuse necklace and her black ruffle Pearl Bib necklace that has earned her praise in magazines like W, InStyle, and Teen Vogue. Immediately upon graduating from business school in 1998, Candace launched Supercandy Designs, a line of hair accessories that quickly evolved into a jewelry and accessory company. Through her work with Supercandy, Candace was inspired to pursue her dream of attending Parsons in New York to study fashion. she was noted for her collaboration with Urban Outfitters. The diffusion line consisted of hair accessories and jewelry, distinguished as easy on the wallet yet high on the style radar. In 2005, Supercandy Designs became Candace Ang Designs, and introduced a line of fashion jewelry. Her jewelry has found a home in the most fashion forward boutiques in the U. S. and abroad. www.candaceang.com 5 Sapphire Whisper /AUTUMN 2010
Nuna Accessory Collection
T
he Vargas sister design trio have created their lovely signature accessory line for eco friendly fashionistas. Their Nuna Collection draws upon mother nature for inspiration using all natural materials to fabricate a truly unique line of accessories. Each piece is handmade from organic all natural materials. Their designs strive to convey the overall message behind the line, as according to the sisters: “every piece is created to exhibit the inner beauty and style of all who share our passion for the environment and social responsibility.” Shimmers & Shine Check out their latest introduction, Eco Gold, a stunning collection of earrings, necklaces and bracelets woven from grass. Eco Gold is made from a gold colored plant that shines and looks just like gold, that is harvested from September to the beginning of November. Although it is named grass, it is actually a plant that consist of leaf rosette with a delicate foliage of natural golden coloration. Their innovative use of this all natural resource produces such unique creations made for the modern day goddess. You’ll love the decadent lustrous shine while the pieces are surprisingly light as feather. Driving You Nuts Another Nuna signature are the playful statement pieces made from Tagua seeds, also known as vegetable ivory. While the Eco Gold exudes a delicate romantic flare, the tagua collection takes a more modern edge, with chunky jewelry, strong shapes and vibrant colors. A Tagua nut is the fruit of a palm tree, which flourishes in tropical rain forests such as Colombia, Ecuador and Panama. Tagua nuts are considered an ecologically safe, supportive and friendly product. Tagua products are experiencing a comeback due to the efforts to protect endangered species such as whales and elephants, which are the traditional source for ivory. In one year, a Tagua palm produces the same amount of “ivory” as a female elephant. The harvest of Tagua is a wonderful way to protect endangered rainforest lands giving people a sustainable, renewable, natural resource that provides economic stability and an alternative to rainforest destruction.
The Nuna collection is original, versatile and eye catching. It’s easy to fall in love with the inspiring eco friendly accessory line. The word Nuna means soul and spirit in the quechua language, the indigenous language of the Andean Region, which perfectly embodies the essence and character of the collection. Visit the Nuna Website for more information on this lovely brand and the opportunity to purchase pieces from the collection online! www.nunacollection.com Sapphire Whisper

all awakens in many of us the feeling of new beginnings. As the air get crisp, I feel the heightened sense that I’m in the midst of change. At the same moment we can be drawn into reflection upon the previous events of the spring and summer and when looking back Sapphire Whisper’s eyes and hearts rested upon the disastrous oil spill in the Gulf Coast and the aftermath for the future of this region. Healing the economic and environmental damage will still take some time: as there is still much more to be done. Recovery will be a long uphill battle that tests courage and determination and calls for immediate and continuous attention.
Sapphire Whisper would like to shine the spotlight on New Orleans artisans and craft fashionistas that have banded together
to showcase their talents and to help bring about change in their community. It’s important for all of us to get involved to help Louisiana and the Gulf Coast reestablish the productivity and vibrancy of the ecosystem for the people and wildlife alike. Handmade Louisiana is a group of artisans, musicians and small business owners. Creators and talented designers Amy Dutsch, Merry Rubins and Lisa Raspino started the community to create a safe place for artisans to gather, share ideas, business tips, and have a creative outlet together. Handmade Louisiana is a small group, but welcomes members who meet certain criteria (the members must either currently reside in Louisiana, or if they do live out of state they must have spent much of their lives there. Also, members must be artisans, small business owners or musicians) Handmade Louisiana has worked together on their etsy site group: Team Shop, www.handmadelouisiana.etsy.com, here members have donated items to the shop to donate the profits to clean up the Oil Spill. Previously, the Team Shop sent a donation to the Gulf Restoration Network and subsequent money donations will be sent to New Orleans’ very own Audubon Institute. Audubon Nature Institute operates parks and museums in New Orleans dedicated to Celebrating the Wonders of Nature, including Audubon Zoo, Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, Entergy IMAX Theatre, Audubon Center for Research of Endangered Species, Freeport-McMoRan Audubon Species Survival Center, Wilderness Park, Woldenberg Riverfront Park, Audubon Park, and its newest attraction, Audubon Insectarium. Coordinated by Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, LMMSTRP is the primary responder for the state of Louisiana for rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing marine mammals (dolphins, whales and manatees) and sea turtles affected by the 2010 Gulf oil spill. Audubon and LMMSTRP are collaborating with NOAA, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the U.S. Coast Guard to ensure that we have the most up to date information about the oil spill and any possible animals in its path. Visit online www.auduboninstitute.org to learn more. Handmade Louisiana also works on a local level, creating a community through monthly Craft a Long challenges on their blog but through the etsy shop, visitors from other states can enjoy the variety of designs as Handmade Louisiana is home to a wide array of talented artists. You can explore the inspiring collections, ranging from art and photography, bath and beauty, embroidery, graphic arts, home decoration, jewelry, fashion, childrens, vintage and more. There is a notable sense of state pride with many eye catching pieces in tribute to New Orleans, such as many lovely Fleur De Lis interpretations. One of the more vocal member of the Louisiana crafting community is Mallory Whitfield... also know for her blog www.missmalaprop.com and online shop. In addition to her participation in Handmade Louisiana, Mallory has been donating a percentage of sales from her online store, www.shopmissmalaprop.com, as well as in person events to local non-profits who are working with oil spill cleanup and wildlife efforts. Currently donations have been given to help The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies with their wildlife rescue efforts related to the recent Gulf of Mexico BP oil spill disaster. Mallory has been writing about other artists, designers, and handmade and eco-friendly goods on her blog since 2006 7

Through her online shop she offers many handmade and eco-friendly products by herself and other indie artists, most are also from Louisiana but a few are also from other states. Miss Malaprop is a great source for modern handcrafted accessories, home decor, jewelry, clothing and so much more with affordable flat rate shipping of $5.25 and free shipping on orders over $50. Mallory is actively involved in promoting and educating about these eco related concerns and provides a resource of information on ways to be involved in oil spill relief efforts on her blog. Mallory is also noted as one of the founders of The New Orleans Craft Mafia. Some of their members are also in Handmade Louisiana, however the NOCM is a smaller group, strictly for the craft-related businesses in New Orleans. NOCM models itself after the original Craft Mafia in Austin, Texas, where a small group of talented ladies joined together to support each other in their crafty business endeavors. Interest grew and Craft Mafias have been popping up all over the world. The New Orleans Craft Mafia formed in June 2005 and consists of several independent artists in a variety of handmade media: jewelry, clothing, accessories, bath & body, home decor, and more. Check out today the amazing designs of its members Art by Mags, Bayou Salvage, Flambeaux Design Company, Greenkangaroo, Kristina Renee Jewelry, Miss Malaprop, She Loves Me Not Clothing, Sweet Olive Soap Works and Unique Products. After forming in 2005, the New Orleans Craft Mafia has gone through many changes forming just before Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent levee failures that ravaged New Orleans, the group has remained strong and is now poised for even bigger and better things with dedication to keeping the spirit of indie craft alive in the Crescent City as the sponsor of many craft events around New Orleans.
New Orleans is a vibrant artistic community rich in culture and
creativity, that runs deep with soul and passionate spirit. Although they have been bombarded with many challenges over the past few years, it’s inspiring to see the great art and sense of community growing and always shinning through. Eco Friendly Fashion We took notice of the following designers, each with their own special and inspirational fashion message and outstanding eye catching designs that are a must have for the fall season
Prairie Underground
P
rairie Underground has incorporated the innovative use of sustainable textiles made of hemp and organic cotton into every collection that they have been producing since 2005. They have used recycled polyester/organic cotton blends and overstock fabric of both conventional and sustainable fabrications. Furthermore, Prairie Underground prides itself as a business which directly supports a diminishing network of sewing contractors and a dye house in Seattle Washington all within fifteen minutes from their studio. These are businesses that now rely on their collection since so many companies have moved production overseas. The majority of the fabric is knitted in the United States, as Prairie Underground follows through a mission of sourcing domestically and as close to Seattle as possible. Orders are shipped with a minimum of interior packaging in clean re-used boxes with hangtags that are designed to be reused as bookmarks. By only producing what is ordered, Prairie Undergrounds eliminates a surplus of unwanted clothing. Each day working to establish a fair and ethical model for doing business in the garment industry, Prairie Underground strives to create a different type of American business through their example and progressive work. While it has always been an essential part of their business ethic to use sustainable materials, they prefer not to describe the collection as exclusively eco because that only describes one part of their business. Prairie Underground is both populist and non-commercial while supporting fair trade and domestic industry. Their concerns are not exclusively ecological. Matters of artistic expression, accessibility, economy, and local production are all a part of their design parameters. Prairie Underground remains above all fashion design with an idiosyncratic point of view, obsessive about fit, silhouette and how customers will wear their clothing every day. They are also keenly aware of their customer and work to seduce and delight them with each new collection. Always thankful for their success, Prairie Underground truly believes they are living the American dream. www.prairieunderground.com
Olsenhaus
O
lsenhaus is a creative, bold women’s collection of vegan footwear, with additional mens’ and childrens’ styles. The line has received immediate, raving reviews domestically and internationally by retail stores, with major on-line and print press. Olsenhaus uses alternative, sustainable and renewable plant-based and man-made, non-animal materials such as: ultra suede, organic cotton, canvas, nylon, velvet, linen, cork, and a synthetic eco-lining. Olsenhaus is 100% vegan: no leather, fur, wool or silk is ever used Sapphire Whisper
/AUTUMN 2010 20
The Soles are a composite of rubber, the glues are rubber-based and vegan, the paint is vegan and non-toxic. Nothing is ever tested on animals. Olsenhaus continually searches for more innovative techniques and encourages their factories and suppliers to use safer processes. Synthetic and plant based materials account for far less pollution, and use only a fraction of the energy when compared to any leather. Most synthetics available today are flexible, breathable, and biodegradable. In addition, alternative materials are consistent in size, shape and thickness and therefore the entire piece is used, unlike a leather, which creates such an enormous amount of waste. For its manufacturing, Olsenhaus works only with people and factories with high standards of quality, reliability and accountability. Factories are personally checked for fair trade practices, fair wages, proper facilities, ventilation, clean and comfortable working conditions, safe machinery, superior organization, it is ensured that employees are respected for their skills, there are no child labor practices, and no outsourcing to other factories or countries. The concept of Olsenhaus is to showcase alternative materials that are clever, as well as sophisticated, fun and on trend, while promoting consciousness through example and education. What the goods are made of, why, and attention to the impact on the environment, animals and people. In addition, Olsenhaus works to change the face of what a vegan person looks like: someone who is hip and stylish, knowledgeable about what is going on, and working to make a difference, without sacrifices. It is all about style, truth, and the shift in consciousness to a new luxury. Recycled for Fall 2010 The fall 2010 collection is made of 100% recycled industrial waste from television screens, that have been made into an ultra suede material. Not only is the material recycled, but the manufacturer employs a method called PET chemical recycling, which reduces both energy consumption and Co2 emissions by a minimum of 80%. The material is durable, colorfast and waterproof. Natural resources/sustainable materials: such as wood and cork are used in the collection, as details of the heels and platforms. Olsenhaus additionally uses recycled rubber tires, transforming an environmental problem into a durable appealing sole. www.olsenhaus.com

Environmental Impact: Because their raw materials have already been produced and used in the past, no pollution is caused during the re-production stage. The main environmental impact is during transportation which may be by sea, air, train, car, bus or when possible by bicycle or foot depending on destination. Social Impact :Dreamandawake does not work in strict seasons, therefore no time pressure or demand of overtime on the tailors that are free to decide themselves when to work. They also paid a fair sum set by the tailors themselves. Many of the changes are also made in their mobile dreamandawake studio. Red Cross Collection DreamandAwake continues their ongoing cooperation with the Sweden Red Cross Organization, where DreamandAwake has been coordinating and designing the set up of the local production of dresses. DreamandAwake has now gone one step further by producing new dresses out of discarded clothes and textiles which cannot be sold second hand or do not fit in relief supplies in order to offer an alternative for sustainable development. Designer Amanda Ericsson has visited the Red Cross Second Hand Shops and searched through the piles of discarded clothes and textiles. And then from her findings, she has created a kit consisting of fabric cut outs and instructions of how to sew the dresses. The kits are delivered to volunteers in the Red Cross’ sewing groups. The volunteers sew the dresses and Amanda in turn checks every dress to ensure the quality. All dresses produced are put up for online sale in Amanda’s shop dreamandawake.com. The entire amount raised goes to the Swedish Red Cross’ Save the Mothers Campaign. Every dress sold raises enough funds to supply a village midwife in Sudan with equipment for five deliveries. Among many projects, the money raised will go towards supporting village midwifes in Southern Sudan, to treat mothers and children with severe trauma of war and to reunite families who have been separated. The campaign aims to raise awareness around the issues of women who are afflicted by war and conflict. www.dreamandawake.com

Physical Graffiti
L
ocated in the heart of NYC’s East Village on St Marks Place, Physical Graffiti is home to a unique selection of vintage wears for men and women. This cozy shop opened in 1994 by Ilana Malka and in addition to its well edited selection of vintage clothing and accessories, the location itself is also quite noteworthy. The last Led Zeppelin album used the very same building for the album’s cover and the building was also used as backdrop for a Rolling Stones music video - Waiting on a Friend. The concentration of shops on St. Marks Place reflects the current flavor. The street has been home to hippies, yippies, punks, political activists and protest marches, renowned bookstores, music stores and clubs, graffiti artists, cafes, clothing shops, restaurants, bars, theaters - physical graffiti well describes the street itself. There are lots of reasons why vintage is such a great choice, and one of the most fulfilling reason is that vintage clothing is the most environmentally friendly way of dressing. Wearing vintage clothing is literally recycling fashion from other eras and reusing what is available to create an entirely new style. By its very nature, vintage uses less resources, produces no chemicals, dyes or other such waste and virtually leaves no carbon footprint. www.physicalgraffitivintage.com
