Overview Challenge

01

The idea behind the magazine was to build something for ocean-minded ladies out there who are in tune, or want to be on top of, the beach-bound lifestyle. Realizing that not every one has had some sort of board under their feet their whole lives, /FLUID needs to cater to everyone.

Solution

/FLUID page

/FLUID is a magazine designed for women with a coastal mindset and independent spirit. Although we all love flipping through other magazines seeing what Dane, CJ, and Machado are up to, when it comes down to it, girls wear bikinis not board shorts. That’s why /FLUID gives us ladies the news and updates of the female surfing world; including music, art, photography, and fashion.

The easy-going, beach-bum kind of life allows for some amazing photography to be developed in and out of the water, the magazine features local photographers, surfers, yogis... real people. Never photoshopped. / FLUID was laid out to invite readers to understand a style of living that most can’t figure out. Unless, of course, you’re living it. We give it to our readers up close and personal, by adding lines and designs that mimic those on perfect waves, so readers feel as if they’re paddling through the pages as they flip.

In Between Magazine is the perfect little concoction of information to be featured in an artists’ gallery or show, including photos of the various work and interviews, and articles and news in an art magazine. Designed to fit in the palm of your hand.

To design a mini-magazine filled with as much information and photos that a gallery show would feature, without becoming a full-blown art magazine.

The most important part of this was that no information was left out of this tiny product. It was made to explode with art and artists, and other artsy things like music and design. Simplicity was our goal because “as much as we are trying to simplify our lives, we want to help you simplify yours.” The full bleed images expand the pages to make them feel larger than they really are. The most interesting thing about In Between Magazine is the magazine changes in design every time, since not every featured artists’ work is alike.

To create a reliable sunblock that is all-natural and actually protects you from chapped lips and blistered noses. Forget about who is wearing what, and start protecting your skin with a zinc that won’t rub off after every duck dive. Fresh out of the kitchen and straight into the Atlantic, Zinc Tuanis stays on your skin until you need it to come off.

Solution

Zinc Tuanis page

An idea for an all-natural sunblock came about in Costa Rica, but became a St. Augustine product. Two things separate it from the rest- Vintage style packing and homemade zinc.

Vintage packaging gives the feel that this sunblock has been around since the beginning of surfing, making it a wise choice because it has survived the test of time. Images of natural ingredients let the user know what’s going on their skin quickly so there is more time out in the water. The metal tin also gives-off that classic feel.

Overview Challenge

The challenge was to create an easyto-use app for people unfamiliar with what goes on at the beach, specifically regarding safety in and out of the water. The design needed to be clear and understandable with as much information as possible. Whether it be about a jellyfish sting or the weather’s highs and lows.

Solution

Seavivor page

Seavivor is a beach safety and ocean app that includes daily weather, tides, surf forecast, and even a social section where the public can upload photos of whats going on around them.

The home screen is basic and enables users choose their beach location. After that, the app keeps their most recent location in memory for quick and easy access. Going further into the app, the beach you chose has a screen solely for what the current beach day look like with tides, currents, weather, and what flag the lifeguards are flying. There is also a safety screen that users can search for specific questions or look for most asked questions at the beach. Also, being in a social media world, there is a screen where anyone at the beach can upload photos (but they have to be accepted before featured) of what’s going on at the beach that day. Users can communicate with other users with a thumbs-up or thumbs-down button to scale what kind of beach day it is.

To create a series of socks that are artistic and fun to wear. An uncommon vibe to your everyday colorless sock.

Solution

Volta page

Trash the boring white tube sock, there’s a better hat for your feet. Volta socks are pleasantly offbeat in design, but keep your feet looking bold and stylish. Each pair has a unique tie-dye effect and a branded Volta logo on every sock.

Hand-dye every sock to make sure non are alike. Brand the Volta logo on a leather rectangle. Complete by rolling up each pair and fastening with a hemp draw string. Attached to the string is a fun, ocean minded photo to bring an element of comfort that a sock should carry. The colors are warm to remind you of the sun and beach, while others are dark to give that night time edge, full moon feel. The tag line, ‘Hats for your Feet’ give the socks a simmer-down aura. I would suggest you don’t wear these to the office.

Design a poster and direct mailer that draws attention to the everyday viewer to come and check out what Graphic Design Students spend their nights and days working on.

Solution

POSTER / DIRECT MAILER DESIGN

A sultry 1950’s burlesque dancer background photo is used to catch the eyes of viewers. The headline “Not your ordinary freak show” is a humorous way to describe the students in the Graphic Design department. A bold type treatment is used to get the event, date, and time right to the point at a quick glance. See? We can have fun too, but not too much fun.

Megan Becker is a producer focusing on music video production. Gearing towards underground indie rock music, her productions are edgy and fun to watch, and will most likely make your iTunes playlist that much better.

A Flagler Graduate with a degree in Communication specializing in Media Production and Cinema and Media Studies, music and video production are Megan’s passions. By combining the two, she creates a galaxy of visual arts. She sees life through a lens, and the only thing missing was a logo and identity to call it a wrap. Creating a logo for Megan needed to look simple, but have beautifully intricate details.

When you first meet Megan, you see a natural beauty and talent, and after you meet Megan, she’s even more beautiful. The hand drawn type makes her personable, and the galaxy lens adds depth to not only her name, but her work. The bars of the E’s in Megan’s name match the first three bars of a music staff- symbolizing her love for music. The choice of using transparency paper gives the effect of looking through a camera.

Sandals for Salvador

Challenge

41

The challenge was to create a website and surf contest poster that had an organic, friendly vibe. To make this organization feel complete, t-shirt designs and custom sandals would add to this good-natured cause.

Solution

page

Sandals for Salvador is a non-profit organization created to raise shoes to be donated to the kids in El Salvador. Created by surfers, this laid back organization’s mission is to put new shoes and sandals on the bare feet of children.

The logo was hand drawn to replicate the free movements of waves, but also the imperfect hand that little kids have when drawing. The contest poster was a mixed media (watercolor and digital design) process to enhance the fun, light-hearted personalities of the creators. With photos from current adventures to the country of El Salvador on the website, it allows viewers to see progress with the charity and the creators’ relationships the Salvadoreùo families.

A jewelry line that is different in every piece. Fit the product with its packaging, but have them both be able to sit strong without the other, just as the wearer should be when not wearing Rein.

German word for pure, but uniquely pronounced as ‘rain’ to reflect nature’s own purity. Rein jewelry is authentic, hand-made, and natural. Not every piece is perfect, but made, and beautifully crafted until it feels complete. The embossed gold on the tags reflects the dimensions and texture of the stones, shells, and gems. Wrapped in a packing resembling the point of a crystal, it is also embellished with a gold embossing to unify everything. There are discreet Native American symbols that mean happiness and adventure.
