Cabernet Grill
Texas boasts 8 grape growing areas (American Viticultural Areas) and over 200 wineries and vineyards. It would take several days to travel to all of these areas, and several weeks to taste the wine. Cabernet Grill, located on the southern edge of town gives you the opportunity to taste some of the best of Texas wines and pair them with exceptional Texas food.

“taste some of the best of Texas wines and pair them with exceptional Texas food”
Cabernet Grill opened 12 years ago with an absolute passion for food and a goal to serve only Texas wine. Initially, filling the wine list was challenging. Currently, Cabernet Grill offers 70 Texas wines; many of which have won and continue to win national and international awards. The wines vary from white to red, sweet to dry and after-dinner to desert. Owner and Executive Chef, Ross Burtwell, then offers exquisite dishes that can be paired with the wines that will enhance the flavors and increase enjoyment. If you are not sure what wine to drink with what dish, the server has been trained to help you decide. Cabernet Grill’s staff receives continuing education from the wineries, either by going on “field trips” to taste the local wine or by having winemakers come to the restaurant for a training. Ross and chef/wife Marianna also continue their culinary and wine training. Last year they tasted their way through Italy and this year they are planning a trip to the Big Apple. Ross and Marianna believe in serving new ideas in food, you will regularly be treated with something new on the menu. Something you might try is a chicken fried rib eye, topped with lobster and green chile. Or perhaps a jalapeno and bacon stuffed quail. Cabernet Grill specializes in food that comes from Texas and is inspired by Texas culture.

While you enjoy your wine and relax before your meal, you can sit and enjoy the roaring fire and the rustic ambience. The building, modeled after an old cotton gin and adorned with industrial antiques sets your mind to wandering. After dinner, if you are staying on the grounds, you simply walk to one of seven cabins nestled around the courtyard for a good night’s rest. Enjoy Cabernet Grill and enjoy Texas.

Alexander Vineyards
wine {wein}
“We want our wines to be great expressions of the varietal or region from which they are produced.“
The Texas wine industry is growing rapidly, and nowhere is that more apparent than in the Texas Hill Country. Grape growers and wine consumers in Texas are learning more about grape varietals, what grows best in the various regions, and what pairs best with foods. That’s what brought Claude Alexander here; to establish one of the area’s newest wineries, Alexander Vineyards. But unlike others in the region, Claude is doing something completely different, he is making wines in some of the great wine regions of the world and bringing them to Texas. Alexander Vineyards produces Grand Cru wines in Champagne and Bordeaux in France, and along the famed Mosel river in Germany. He plans to expand those offerings in the near future to include US wines as well as additional French ones from Burgundy and Rhone, Italy and Spain. Wine is something Claude has always been passionate about. His vision began with the idea of sharing some of the great experiences he had when visiting some of the best wine destinations of the world. After exploring a number of opportunities, he decided to create a destination where he could share his passion with others. That’s when Alexander Vineyards was born. Alexander enjoys teaching about wine. He is committed to growing the wine industry in Texas and providing Texans with a well-rounded education. By offering French and other European wines, the Hill Country traveler will be able to compare local wines to those made abroad. In the future, he will host events with wine and food pairings, entertainment, and other collaborative efforts with his fellow wine makers. Although, the current tasting room is small, Alexander Vineyards has big plans. The future structure will be suggestive of the new addition to the Nimitz Museum in Fredericksburg, the grounds will take advantage of the natural beauty of the hills, and the wine will speak for itself.

“His paintings draw you in and make you feel like you are there.”
Jim Phipps
Jim Phipps first encountered Fredericksburg for a vacation and a few rounds of golf. What he found in Fredericksburg was much more, he found an art paradise. Jim has been painting for over 20 years. As a young man, there was little time for art. As a talented football player, Jim devoted his time to training in high school and in college. As an adult he had a successful career in broadcasting. Although sports and career were always at the forefront, Jim harbored a natural ability to draw. After several visits to Santa Fe, Jim realized he wanted to learn to paint. He contacted Dale Amburn, who taught him his artistic foundation and the impasto method of painting. Jim states that this method “requires courage” because you pile the paint on in one application instead of adding layers. Jim improved his painting through practice, personal focus and by being inspired and influenced by other artists. It was the same for him in football. “You have to be in-tune with what you are doing and focused. Then you become really involved in it.” He gives the example of looking at a historic building in Fredericksburg. First you just see the building, it catches your eye. The longer you look at it, “you begin to see the shape of the stones and how they were cut, the mortar joints... You see things differently as you mature. You make a change here, tweak it there. It’s all based off a feel.” It is this feel that Jim excels at. His paintings draw you in and make you feel like you are there. His beautiful landscapes invite and encourage you to relax and see things his way. Locally, Jim’s art is displayed at the Good Art Company Art Gallery. There, owners Mary Katherine and Brandon Fickel know quality art and they know how to promote it. This diverse gallery strives to reach art lovers of all ages and offers multiple events throughout the year. In addition to the Good Art Company, Fredericksburg offers exceptional dining establishments, shops, museums and entertainment all of which combine to make Fredericksburg the art paradise that Jim Phipps sees.

artful quality style
Fabricating artistic props and constructing a unique ambiance are a particular joy. A pair of 13’ antique church doors framing an outdoor amphitheater she designed for a wonderful ranch wedding last spring; a massive entry door surround clad with thousands of fresh flowers at a beautiful private club; or fantasy flower trees & theatrical backdrops for the first Fasching Ball are just a few done recently. Maggie brings a cool head and a warm heart to her business designing each one in great detail to the individual tastes, budget, and aspirations of each client.

“fun items that brighten your mood and enhance you or your home”
Take a stroll along Main Street in Fredericksburg, pursue the variety of stores, rest on a bench and replenish at a café. Enjoy the buildings nestled together, better than any urban shopping center, and be certain not to miss Heirlooms. Heirlooms is a wonderful little store with a large variety of riches. Owner Rhonda Roberts describes the store as “needless necessities” - fun items that brighten your mood and enhance you or your home. Rhonda opened her store in Kerrville, TX. in 2002, carrying mainly antiques & vintage items, hence the name Heirlooms - "Comforts of Home". Although, after deciding to move her store to Fredericksburg in 2007, Heirlooms has since evolved into carrying much less furniture and bedding, to much more decorative home accents and unique gifts, with even the addition of clothing and shoes. Bright and FUN describes Heirlooms in 2014, which is perfectly stated as Heirlooms - "Needless Necessities" on her sign today. Heirlooms features many exclusive and unique lines. Some of her best-sellers are the Lenny & Eva line of jewelry and sentiments, bath & body products by Farmhouse Fresh Goods & Royal Apothic, clothing and shoes by Elan, VaVa Voom and Volatile. You’ll also delight in the Himalayan line of candles and Mud Pie products for babies. Winerelated products, by VinoIce & CorkPops, are also popular gift lines found at Heirlooms. These unique lines, much like Heirlooms, focuses on enhancing women’s lives with fashion, fun and meaning! The unique blend of items at Heirlooms will peak your interest and leave you with a needless necessity of your own. At Heirlooms, you will find that special something that speaks to you. You may find yourself gasping, “Oh, I’ve gotta have that!” and giggling to yourself as you jubilantly glide to the register.

Brenda Newman
antiques {antiquitäten}
“The antique tells a story and brings its presence to life in a room.”
Brenda Newman has a gift. Give her some beautiful antiques and a room to design and she will create a feeling of warmth and a space of integrity. Whether you want a home that’s filled with beautiful European antiquities or a modern space that is juxtaposed by the style of a spectacular antique, Newman can make those wishes come true. She has a genuine love and appreciation for the quality and craftsmanship that comes with an antique. Brenda feels that the patina it acquires over the years adds instant prestige and richness to any room. “I was drawn to the design, retail business many years ago while living in Houston. It’s been an interesting journey having been a buyer for a couple of major furniture stores, my own retail store and an incredible design clientele.” Over the years, Brenda’s career has taken her to antique markets in France, Belgium and England. These experiences give Newman a unique ability to offer European antiques in her petite shop that will fit into many situations in a home’s interior. Whether it’s the charm of a 19th Century French farm table, an elegant Flemish tapestry, a collection of handsome English walking sticks, blue and white collectibles or a rare matching pair of antique French “Sac de Pearls” bronze crystal chandeliers, she has many wonderful items with which to tempt you. Newman enjoys working with individuals who are acquiring a piece for their home or just adding another treasure to their collection and with designers shopping for a client. “It is thrilling to me when I see some of my antiques being purchased by a Dallas designer (as was the case just the other day). It validates what I feel strongly…that my antiques are worthy and my prices are fair. It is extremely important to me that I make every effort to work with the Trade. When an Interior Designer walks through the door, they are serious about finding the perfect antique for their client. I want them to know they’re appreciated!”

“A movie theatre is a place people come for entertainment, therefore it should be a fun and happy place.”
Some people have a dream that benefits others. And other people have dreams that can benefit entire communities. Sloan Ruth, the owner of Fritztown Cinemas is one of those special dreamers. Through reopening our theatre in town Sloan has given young people, school groups, adults and retirees a local gathering place to come and relax and be entertained by the latest blockbusters. It is Sloan’s belief that “a movie theatre is a place people come for entertainment, therefore it should be a fun and happy place.” Driving her passion is the thought that this world is hard enough and people have less leisure time, now more than ever and so it is her hope that Fritztown Cinema will be a fun escape for everyone! Sloan, her children and her extended family have worked tirelessly to bring you everything you could expect and continues to work hard to make sure that your movie going experience is all that you hoped it would be, and more! Through working with local directors and producers and local Film Festivals Fritztown Cinemas will also premier independent films along with the latest Hollywood movies. On the menu for movie night? Of course the delicious hot buttery popcorn that we all have all come to love will be served, however Sloan is working on new tasty menu items, sure to please even the hungriest appetite, and is in the process of applying for her beer and wine license. Just think, for the cost of a few tickets you can literally escape your thoughts and be drawn into the magical world that only a really good movie can take you to. So why not grab a friend or two, the kids or the grandkids, or even the entire third grade and come to the movies tonight? You will be so glad you did.

Becky’s Juicerie
health & beauty {gesundheit}
“Relax, enjoy the ambiance and drink to your health!”
wellness energy joy
When Sam Brickner’s health began to deteriorate, her mother Becky, advised her to try juicing. Becky did as suggested, along with doing some research on her own and found that drinking fresh blended juice beverages, not only helped to improve her health, but made her feel better overall and have more energy. So when Becky bought the juicerie in 2011, Sam and her sister Savanah both moved from Dallas to help her run the business. By trade, Sam is a graphic designer and Savanah has a degree in aviation. Neither of which would lend naturally to health and juicing, however both add a level of professionalism and knowledge that make the juicerie fly. On their journey to learn about the health benefits of raw foods and juice they traveled to Puerto Rico and studied at the Ann Wigmore Natural Health Institute. Here they learned how to grow their own wheatgrass from seeds, juicing and blending techniques, the importance of relaxing and enjoying a meal and about the potential benefits of raw fruits and vegetables. Although the ability for raw fruits and vegetables to cure diseases has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), eating 5-7 servings of fruits or vegies a day is fully supported and recommended by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to prevent malnutrition, obesity and future heart conditions. At the Health Institute, Sam learned a variety of ways to get those servings back into the diet and they are available at Becky’s Juicerie. The Juicerie has recently had a face-lift. Welcoming you is a gorgeous outdoor patio/garden with comfortable seating, a cozy fireplace and great ambiance. Inside, is a state of the art juicing center that offers a great variety of mixed, freshly blended juices, protein options and super foods such as wheatgrass, barley grass or spirulina. You can design your own juice concoction or you can order off the menu which offers blends such as Emerald Isle, Tropical Teaser or Sam’s favorite the Peanut Butter Razzler! In addition to the juices, Becky’s Juicerie offers coffee, sandwiches and blended food (veggies blended into a gazpacho-style, cold soup). When you come to Becky’s Juicerie, relax, enjoy the ambiance and drink to your health!

Country Inn & Cottages
stay {übernachten}
“Arrive as strangers, leave as friends.”
The cottages at Country Inn & Cottages are iconic Hill Country lodgings. They offer historical German buildings with modern amenities, breathtaking landscapes, wildlife viewing and easy access to Fredericksburg’s finest attractions. While the cottages are rustic in design, comfort, efficiency and esthetics have not been overlooked. Owners Jeff and Amy Mazurek go out of their way to make your experience at Country Inn & Cottages pleasurable and easy. Their motto is “Arrive as strangers, leave as friends.” Visiting the cottages feels as though you are visiting beloved relatives on an old family farm. Unlike a family farm however, the Mazureks have no intentions of making you work, they have every intention of helping you have fun. By way of adventure, helicopter tours and guided wine tours launch from the property. Additionally, a concierge service is underway to suggest other adventures. By way of serenity, deer roam the property freely and elk are pastured within a stone’s throw. Starlight is uninhibited by city lights and weather permitting, shines unencumbered over the property. By way of celebration, there is a newly-built event lodge equipped with a bar, custom colored lights to suit the occasion or the bride’s color choice for her wedding. A large outdoor patio and fireplace provide ample space and an excellent indoor/outdoor sound system for any occasion. Conveniently, after the celebration, there is lodging for party goers, with 28 cabins the entire wedding party can stay. Jeff and Amy’s Country Inn & Cottages is a family business. They live, work and raise their twin sons on the grounds. Their attention to detail, customized cabins, and the beautiful setting are a tribute to what they value in life. The best part of the business for Jeff - the smile on people’s faces after a relaxing stay. A getaway in the Hill Country is made better by a stay at the Country Inn & Cottages.

Sierra Homes
reside {bleiben}
“I am constantly looking for ways to improve the homes we live in.”
What do a Veterinarian and a Home Builder have in common? A love of science and a commitment to excellence! That is what you will find in Teresa and David Fransik of Sierra Homes. Teresa owned and operated a veterinary clinic for 15 years before she made the switch to manage her husband David’s new green home-building business, Sierra Homes. David was a home builder in Dallas for many years and was frustrated by the lack of interest in green building. In a search of a lifestyle better suited to them and their middle school aged son, plus a place to launch a green building business, the Fransiks discovered Fredericksburg. They made the move in 2002 and launched a highly successful, performance focused, home building business. David and Teresa’s goal is simple - build more efficient and cost effective homes. David admits, “I am constantly looking for ways to improve the homes we live in.” The ways in which Sierra Homes improves the houses that they build are by applying new science, and by using materials and methods that will allow a home to maximize its efficiency for heating and cooling and reduce energy costs. Sierra Homes recommends details that will allow the client to build a home that is better for the environment and reasonable on the pocket book. Teresa has a self-pronounced love for spreadsheets and keeps remarkable details tracking every aspect of the building process. “Some people want to know everything,” she states, “and some people just want the bottom line. I can provide either one.”
home settle live
The Fransiks intend to see green building become the norm and not the exception in home building. They are currently working on a series of economically priced, performance based, green homes that are somewhat standardized with a guarantee on utility costs. The Fransiks are confident that they can build a home that will operate as expected in extreme Texas heat, winter cold snaps, drought or rain. This budgeting, planning, green building and exceptional customer service, truly sets Sierra Homes apart from other home builders.
