HI,

ME. I’m currenlty a Product Design student on the BA Hons programme at Edinburgh College of Art. My portfolio is a showcases of my work & passion for design ABOUT ME: I am a highly motivated, proactive and driven individual. I have an incredible passion for design of all kinds but most specifically for product design. I consider myself a calm and patient person and through my experiences working in teams both within and without of University, I am aware of how to handle difficult situations; how to listen to others & how to work successfully with others towards a common goal. I enjoy being busy, exploring creative ideas and alternative directions for design development. I also enjoy being hands-on, getting stuck-in to all aspects of the design development process. I have the necessary dedication to put in whatever time it takes to my projects in order to ensure successful design outcomes. In terms of software, im a big adobe fan, i used it as much as i can whetehr or not its for rendering sketches or putting documents together. Ive not used it for long, say a year or so, but im learning all the time and getting better every day.

Thorugh College and school, i was taugh that the best way to do is to make by hand, i suppose you could say im fairly old school. CAD to me is new, it something i use and now how to but i dont depend on it for all my work out put. I currently use Rhino for all my 3D work.

he project began with a basic brief that was, to create a piece of childrens furniture. It had to be flat pack & composed from wood. The concept i created is BLANK. A project centered around the interpretation of childrens furniture, When we considered furnitre that is design for children it is normally birght with colour animal themed or a minuture version of adult furniture. Blank challenges this. By looking into the way in which, children interacte with furniture and activities they do. It takes apsect of drawings and the satification of being able to make

It could be argued that composing furniture would be alot quicker if an adult did & potentially safer when you condier the fixitives that are sued and the force and tools that are need to connect maerials. Yet when you conisder the potential to create a piece designed to be put together by the child then how do you over come this and make it safe and easy for the child to put the piece together.

nitially at the beginning of this project i was exploring a varition of different concepts that would explore the idea of childrens furniture. Cot Death: Is there an alternative cot that could be composed that would work as a more preventative product to lower the risk of cot death. This concept was explored thorugh various research methods and idea generation that took into account aspects that were deemed as being preventative. After this i came to the Conclu-

sion that the project would probably not be the sufficient as there a number of additive products, that have been developed to be placed in cots to prevent cot death. Alterntive concepts were storage pieces based on how many toys etc kids have, as well as an anti spill able and the lastly a more traditional piece that looked into creating a rocking chair for kids, with the potential of having storage underneath.

POPPERS fter trying to look into potential ways in which i could possibly compose the piece using fastening that would allow the child to put the piece together easily, one of the main options was to use metal poppers. The reasoning behind looking into this fixative, is down to the ease of usability and the strength that it will give to the piece. After numerous testing using various numbers and sizes of poppers, i deemed that they weren’t the safest and sturdiest fixative.

CARD BOARD Simplistic minmal design that looks into the way in which the design would appear as a 1:1, 3-D model. Aspects of the deisgn could be tested through creating this model such as how much it would tip and if there where any trip hazards around the frame. This piece uses a slot style connection. CORRUGATED CARD BOARD To increase the material thickness & compose a prototypes that would replicated the final product. The main aspects that were changed were the joining technique - using tabs instead of slotss and not including the back boards in the designs. This was due to it being an extra fixitive that would need to be put together by the child. MDF After creating the two cardboard pieces, i compsoed a MDF protoypes that was more robust and allowed more rigorus testing to be done. Aspects such as baracing and supports could be tested as well as comfort. Development - Increase back rest hieght. Make foot rest adjustable & add back brace.

FINAL PROTOYPE. ased on the research that i carried out using the childs IKEA chair. The final prodict incorperates the idea of the child being able to put the piece together on there own as well as providing them with multiple drawing surfaces that they can decorate and rub off, as many times as they wish. The final prototypes was composed from 15mm birch plywood & then finished off with a chalk paint. The pieces all slot together and use a simple colour coding system to allow the child to see how the pieces go together. the purpose of the chalk board paint surface is to allow the child to be as creative as they wish, an intial aspect of the research was to get kids to draw what they thought furniture looked like. Therefore the creative spark, if you will carrys on through the surface of the chair.

The WBC, invented by and named after William Broughton Carr, is a double-walled hive with an external housing that splays out towards the bottom of each frame covering a standard box shape hive inside. The WBC is in many respects the ‘classic’ hive as represented in pictures and paintings, but despite the extra level of insulation for the bees offered by its double-walled design, many beekeepers avoid it, owing to the inconvenience of having to remove the external layer before the hive can be examined. COMMERCIAL Commercial hives are of exactly the same external dimensions as a National hive, but instead of having a rebate the hive is a simple cuboid. Because of this the frames are larger and have shorter handles or lugs. The brood box is picked up using small hand holds cut into the external wall of the hive. Supers have this same feature, which can make them difficult to hold when full of honey. LANGSTROTH Most common hive Langstroth hives make use of bee space so that frames are neither glued together nor filled with burr comb–comb joining adjacent frames. Langstroth hives use standardized sizes of hive bodies (rectangular boxes without tops or bottoms placed one on top of another) and internal frames to ensure that parts are interchangeable and that the frames will remain relatively easy to remove, inspect, and replace without killing the bees. IF BEE'S WHERE TO DIE OUT THEN AS DESIGNER WHO WOULD THIS BE MANAGED AND DESIGNED? Bee’s are one of the most vital parts of our ecosystem. Therefore without them we would loose alot of the things that we consider norm and easy to get hold of. Almonds being one of those. So, when we consider the design of the hive is there a way of making it more accessible and easier to use compared with the standard design that even bee keeper find pretty difficlt to interact with. THE HIVE The most commonly used hive in the UK is the National, due to the ease of use and finding bits and bos that can be used to replace or increase the size of the piece. The hive shown is a WBC the stereotypical hive that is most commonly associated with Bee Keeping. EQUIPMENT The main pieces of equipment that are used in Bee keeping are; Suit - protect bee keeper Smoker - calm the bees Hive tool - Open the hive and remove frames.

OMELETE BEE HAUS Due to the decline in bees, there have been a few modern takes, thats have looked into the way in which people could be encouraged to keep bees. Bee haus is an urban hive that can be used on rooftops and small gardens. The main advantage of urban bee keeping is the variation in pollen types. The down side is the hive. The injection moulded piece works as a hive , yet due being plastic makes it difficult to repair as well as increase and decrease in size, something which is easy to do with existing hives.


HIVE TOOL The hive tool is one of if not thee most important tool that is used in the hive. It’s main uses are to split the boxes so that they can be removed. It is also used to scrape propolise of the frames and box edegs as well as removing the frames. Considering how often tool is handled and used there has been little done to consider the ergonimics of the piece.

Padded Handle Through injection moulding a rrubber silicon handle around the metal frame, it would enable the handle to be more supportive and comfortable for the user to interact with.

Turned up end; allows for the brood box to be seperate easily and allow for the internal frsames that store the hoeny to be removed and placed in the extractor.

Smoker. The smoker is used in the hive to calm the bees down. The smoke encourages the bees to eat as much of the honey as they can, as they believe that there is a fire there stores a much of the honey as they can - this makes them sleepy and less prone to sting when the hive is entered. The existing model of the smoker, is hard to interact with, mainly due to how the whole body heats up making it untouchable.

This concpet looked into how a stationary piece could be designed so that, it can be left on top of the hive with no interatcion from the beekeeper. The main disadvantage of this concept is that there isn’t any way of controld the amount of smoke that is let out of the piece. ALTERNATE SHAPE. These CAD renders explore the way in which the shape and nozel could be altered to improve the overall characteristics of the piece.


FINAL DESIGN The final concept refers back to the existing smoker. Aspects have been altered to increase the usability of the product. The two wodden belows have been kept at the back. Two hooks have been added on top of teh belows to help the user handle the piece more easily. A insulated plastic top has also been added so that the lid can be easily removed to empty the smoke ingredents.

HAND HELD GLASS CONCEPT. This concept looked into completely changing the way in which the smoker worked,. The piece has a compression chamber at the bottom that allows for the smoke to be pumped out using one hand. Glass was consider for the main body, due to the visual qualities. This concept wasn’t pursued due to the robustness of the piece.

BEE HIVE DESIGN. sketches. Based on the research that i had gathered together on what was needed to developed the hive, i composed various sketches that i went on to develop and look at how the could become more tailored to what was needed. Intially i looked at how the ‘boxes’ could be developed in terms of how they are handles. As well as how the shape could be altered to make the hive more appealing to a larger audience rather than just looking like a stack of different sized boxes. The main design that became fairly apparently, was a chest of draws - Although there a few hive that work on a drawer systems it isn’t recommended to use, as once the bees have desposted the honey within the stores, wieght causes it to become failry top heavy as well as

FINAL DESIGN CAD RENDER For the final design, i composed a quick CAD render that would show the final design in terms of the material and appearance. The design is render in Red Cedar, the wood that would be used for production, due to the added benefits of the wood needing less treatment.

Concrete top. Existing hives use some form of wieghting on top (generally a couple of breezeblocks) to stabilise and prevent the roof hood form blowing off. This concpets intergrates the wieght into the roof of the piece.

Entrance hole. Small diameter with a mesh overlay to only allow bee’s into the hive and no unwanted visitors.

Handles. To allow for the piece to be more urabn and attract those who live in an urban environment. The piece has been styled to appear as though it has been composed as a chest of draws. The draw hanldes allow for the boxs to be lifted out far more easily than the existing grooves.

Resin dipped feet. Existing hives are usually mounted on top of breeze blcoks, to prevent the wood from becoming wet and eventually rotting. The idea behind this concpet is that the legs are dipped in a water proofing agent that will prevnt the wood rot.

Riccio is a speculative concept of how new and emerging print technologies could be developed into a common day products. the project centres around printed electronic and researches into the potential of printable solar cells. We are all familar with the geometeric and somewhat boring solar lights that we place around are gardens to give off a little bit of light. Yet why are they so boring and undesign. Considering the amount of care and effort the we place into are gardens why dont we have solar lights that compliment this?

INTIAL SKETCHES AND DEVELOPMET WORK Due to the natural form of the design, ( this was something that i wanted to portray in the piece so that it had a deeper connection to the environment that it was placed in). To explore these forms i composed various different forms, intially starting of with looking into how the existing solar light could be alter in shape and pattern. Yet i found this still kept that teh boring characteristics. i then began to look into microscopic cells from viruses to plant cells, some of which have been replicated in the sketches.

The existing format of the electricals within the solar light has prohibited the form from developing. The right hand images shows, the potential for the electronic placement in a 3-D printed version.

Speculitive solar light

RICCIO Speculitive concept for solar lighting. After looking into existing solar light pieces, i personally thought that there was a gap in the market for something new. This was in two possible ways; By exploring new and emering technologies and secondly through enhancing the over all appearance. Due to new technologies there is the potential for electronics and 3D printing to be mergered. i.e. well be able to print electronics. For the manufacture of this piece we would therefore be able to print the piece as one reducing manufacture times and cost. The end of the knodules (the black part) is the solar cell whilst LED are situated within the body (white), which will then light up once the photo resistors detect that there is no light.

Outcome o determine the issue that people with dexterity, have with make up bottles. I tested a range of various different bottle, with a arthritis sufferer. The various different types of make up that i tested were; foundation, eye liners, eye shadow, mascara, nail varnish to determine what the issues of use were i observed the person interacting with the bottles as they would if the where applying make up. One of the aspects that was raised was that in the morning (General time that make up is applied) that the joints are normally more painful, due to them being unsupported and slept on during the night.

The main issues that the user raised with the product was the lack of grip on the surface of the surface of the pieces, as the majority are composed from glossy materials that don’t allow for easy grip. Overall the general problem was the lack of considered material and usability, in terms of grip.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Due to the main issue ogf makeup being the ease of handling i decided to explore how this could be altered by making various shaped bottles that the user could easily and quickly interact with to see whether or not they liked or felt that the bottle worked well. From this it did allow me to see which bottles work and which bottles didn’t. Some of the bottle which i personally felt where easy to handle and would of worked well for those who suffered with dexterity, where the less tactile for the user. The botttles chosen where developed in accordance to feedback from the tester.

FINAL CONCEPT The final bottle were composed from sycamore and then varnished with a light resin. The main concept was to keep the bottle simple yet sculputral, to allow them to fit into a variety of different settings and appear different but not as a product for disability. Products for disabilities so often are design with little consideration to the appearance, which generally result in basic aesthetics which scream out that the person may have some form of dissability. Glasses are one of the few products where this has been avoided, mainly due to the big names who have become involved in there design. Tact is a simple rage of make up bottles. Foundation, mascara, powder & nail varnish.

The concept of the bottle is too make the process of using and applying make up for tactile, for any users. The bottles have been designed specifically for those who suffere with conditions such as arthritis.

The initial brief was to design a new range of make up bottles that would be suitable for use by people that suffered with dexterity issues, such as arthritis. The cpncept of the bottle was to make them as tactile as possible hence the use of the materials. Overall the feedback from the tester was, extremley positive. The bottle were far easier to use and enabled them to feel confident

As we become older the way in the tension and grip in are hands becomes weaker. Simple task such as opening and clsoing botles become harder. Therefore id ecided to look into a different market and get an undrstanding of how they interactied with the bottles. Overall the feedback from the tester was positive a they found the surface of the bottles far more inviting and interesting to interact with as it wasn’t cold and slippery like the standard make up bottle.

The below graphics indicate how the case could be rotated by 90 degrees. Through this i feel as though the piece will become more ergonomic. Personally i feel that through this adjustment non of the characteristic of the case will be lost, as well as the manufacture process being kept. There are two benefits in my eyes why this would potentially aid the deisgn of the case. FIrsty the metal strap holders on the back wouldn’t be in as close proximity to the user back, therefore making the case more comfotable for the user. Secondly based around the concept of the document case; as the piece will be in landscape formatt there the opening will be larger therefore making it easier to remove the document case from the piece.

One of my suggestions is to flip the backpack 90 degrees so that it lies vertically along the back instead of horizontally. The main benefits of this is; - Wider access to documents and other items with in the piece. - As well as the metal strap ‘holders’ being pushed out resulting in them not lying in contact with the back as much. Hopefully resulting in it being more comfortable for use.

Simplistic case, the main function will be to highlight the use of the Hancock material. To allow access to the Iphone in the pouch. Also could potentially display a different material. On the back of the piece there is a storage pocket.

003. Similar to the previous piece the zip runs from the mid top point then down the right side. the zip is longer on this piece as it will be easier to fit the umbrella to the case.

004. Similar to the first design this piece looks into the hancock stylistics of the button detail. instead of being a general button fixing, i have alterd it so that an elastic strap wraps around the button. through this the piece will be more giving to varied sizes of umbrellas.

As a consultancy we felt that due to the high quality of the material that we should promote this. The piece were all made from a high quality scottish hide. The stitiching is hand sewn and finish just short of the top of the case to allow the user easy access to their smart phone.

Marks & Spencers are one of the most recognised brands around. The envirnobemntal work is something that they have just begn to develop. Outdoor based products is one of the main areas that M&S havn’t explored. Whe you consider the power that the branding of M&S gives a product, there is alot of potential to use the branding to support environmental issues. Bee’s. Little of us know how important these littles guys are, but without them alot of the food we know and loved would be gone. So, what would an M&S beehive look like?

This a selection of various differen concepts that I looked into prior to choosing the bee hive. M&S have a recently launched a ski clothing range, hence the concept development of the ski goggles. There is a lack of garden based produtcs by the company the development of these drawing led to looking into someting different hence the bee house.


BTAT To develop the shape and work out how the piece would work, i composed various sketches that looked into the way in which the design would work. Aspects of the design where altered and developed through looking into how the design could be altered.

BWEL HOW DOES IT WORK?

The piece is sectioned of into two halves. the top section contains the frames that are used for honey collection. Whilst the base section is used to store the brood (bee living space). In between this there is a queen excluder. This prevents the honey and the brood aspects from merging. On the top image. I have composed the frames, in accordance with ease of usability and interaction. brand identity After looking into the various sub brands that M&S has, i was particularly interesting in the Per Una label. I felt that this able offer the modern aesthetic. Purpose of the piece? Due to the un-usuality of the piece i wanted to compose something that was visually different. i.e. Didn’t appear similar to all other current bee hives. The current decline of bees is something that we are all familiar with. i feel that tailoring a product sch as this to a large company will enable the process of keeping bees to be integrated into society more.

The second type of person that the product would benefit is those who are trying to loose wieght. as there is a current issue with the growing rates of obesity. hydro blend would allow for fresh on the go smoothies and soups. enabling the user to have a more controlled and healthier lifestyle.

The main adavantage of the product is that you can control everything that goes into the product unlike many shop bought product that have in wanted extras.

The concept of the piece is that the bottle is slootd on top of the blender base, this then powers the blade that is located in the base of the bottle. The bottle enables the user to create soup and smoothies that they can then have on the go..
