In July 2009, months before my 15th birthday, I was diagnosed with a Craniopharyngioma (Brain Tumour). I could not pronounce or spell the word, but I did understand it meant that unless someone could remove it from my brain, I would die. Removing it was a challenge, and I owe my life to Mr Andrew Law, (Neurologist and Surgeon in Auckland), who gave me a 4% chance of surviving the operation. It was 4% more than the previous two surgeon’s I had seen had given me. Now at almost 21 I am still here and living with the continuous challenges I face each day to stay alive. Without medication I would die, even with medication I still might. My journey taught me to appreciate the small things, and to live every day. Canteen has provided me with an opportunity to share many stories like mine and to make a difference to other peoples journey. Everyone who has faced death or the death of a significant other realises it is not the material things in life that are important, it is the people who share your journey and the experiences you have along the way. This book is an expression, an expression of wonder, of living and of appreciation. The people in it continue to fight their own battle putting one foot in front of the other to live to the next experience, to cram all the experiences they can in the time they have left. This book documents CanTeen’s central regions Rest and Relaxation (R&R) camp 2015, held in Hawkes Bay. My intention was to document the weekend, and the several different activities, to capture peoples different emotions, and the celebration of life. Sarah Champion
