Rappahannock Community College and Foundation Report 2014-2016
We’re Ready! Today it seems that people everywhere are talking about readiness: workforce readiness, career readiness, cyber readiness, situational readiness–the list could go on. At RCC, we see readiness as the ability to continually evolve to meet the changing needs of a diverse student body and community population. Being ready to help our students build their bright futures starts with a high quality foundation of faculty, staff, technology, and facilities. I’m proud to report that RCC was named “A Great College to Work For” in 2015 and 2016 by the Chronicle for Higher Education. Colleges that make the list are highly rated by their employees for creating outstanding workplaces–an important achievement to help RCC recruit the best academic and administrative talent. Our list of awards and recognitions is growing! We take great pride in meeting the needs of every student who enrolls. RCC is ready today–and will be tomorrow–to help residents of the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula succeed as learners, employees, and citizens of the 21st century.

College Financial Report Ready to Give Back to Our Community
R
appahannock Community College’s associate-degree nursing program was ready to help our local community when it sponsored a Remote Area Medical (RAM) clinic in November 2015 at the Richmond County Intermediate School. Five hundred and twenty volunteers–encompassing a variety of medical, dental, and vision specialties, plus emergency and nursing care, general support, and interpreters for patients speaking little or no English– provided free medical, dental, and vision care to 611 area patients. Many patients had not seen a doctor or a dentist, or had their eyesight checked, within the last five years or more. Over one thousand dental procedures were performed and 373 of the vision patients went home with new pairs of glasses. A second RAM clinic is scheduled for November 2017.

RCC Educational Foundation, Inc. Report Ready to Partner with Our Community
F
inancing higher education remains a concern for many of RCC’s students and their families. The college’s goal is to make it possible for any student with the ability and desire to learn to attend and receive a degree from RCC. A growing base of available RCC Educational Foundation, Inc. scholarships, coupled with Pell grants and other financial assistance programs, will make that goal a reality. Between 20142016, the foundation awarded nearly 1,000 scholarships totaling over $1 million. The annual Preakness Party fundraiser netted $215,000 in funds between 2014-2016 to support the college and its students and has netted a total of $695,000 since the first event in 2005. The foundation’s total assets continue to grow as well. The value of assets in June 2016 exceeded $8 million, an increase of approximately $1.4 million since June 2013. Through the generosity of local families, civic organizations, and businesses, RCC gets closer each year to making higher education financially possible for all residents of the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula.

Chancellor’s Award for Philanthropy
The Wright Family
T
he Wright family traces its heritage on the Northern Neck back for eleven generations, says Morgan Wright, who runs Wood Preservers of Warsaw, a business started by his father Bill Wright sixty years ago. Supporting the community is in the family DNA, and he acknowledges it was an easy decision for the family to create two endowed scholarships at RCC. “The college is a great local institution that has positive impact on all aspects of the community,” he says. In recognition of their generosity, the family was named recipients of the 2015 Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy. Morgan says the family is honored by the award but believes they are doing something important for the future of the place where they have deep roots. “We are proud to have RCC as one of the pillars of the community and pleased to be able to contribute to its scholarship endowment.”

The Moore Family
J
ack and Susan Moore moved to the Northern Neck full time upon retirement and quickly became involved with RCC. The couple remark, “Over the years, we have been increasingly impressed with the community college and the opportunities it offers to a wide spectrum of people here.” The Moores received the 2016 Philanthropy Award for their contributions to the General Scholarship Endowment. Jack and Susan see the impact that their funds have and say, “Community colleges are the best and perhaps the only way to break the generational poverty cycle.” They add, “We have seen firsthand how students’ horizons have expanded since attending RCC. They have a much broader sense of what is possible, and a fuller sense of themselves and their own potential as citizens of the 21st century.”

He recently acquired credential, issued by the Electronics Technicians Association, as a Certified Fiber Optics Installer by completing RCC Workforce Development’s fiber optics course. “RCC’s Workforce Development team strives to give students the right credentials for today’s and tomorrow’s jobs and the Workforce Credentials Grant program makes it affordable,” says Vice President for Workforce Development, Jason Perry. “Under the new state grant program, a student enrolling in one of the approved workforce credential training programs will pay only 1/3 of the normal cost under the condition that the student successfully completes the program.”

avannah Carabin came into the RCC King George site looking for help. “I knew I would have to work while going to college. I didn’t know what options were out there for me and Ms. Karen Turner, the King George site supervisor, led me in the right direction.” Savannah already owned a small graphic design business in King George and needed to take classes close to work. Dr. Donna Alexander, Vice President of Instruction, says, “Readiness involves being accessible to people who want to take advantage of what RCC has to offer and the college has sites throughout the twelve counties it serves. Locations in King George and King William Counties and in Kilmarnock make it possible for students to attend college close to home.” Savannah recently transferred to Bluefield College to pursue her bachelor’s degree after receiving her associate degree in Business from RCC.

incent Lewis of Gloucester received an associate transfer degree in business administration from RCC after completing his U.S. Army service. He came back to the College to pursue a second transfer degree–this time in pre-engineering. In 2016, Vincent was chosen to participate in the five-week online “NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars Program.” He says, “Every single professor I have had over the past several years has had some type of influence on me, and on what I thought about my education and my future.” Vincent’s goal is to obtain a job in a STEM-related field where his business degree will give him an advantage.
A
t 14 years of age, Middlesex High School student Zakara Blanding dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon. Her journey to reach that goal begins with taking college credit courses through the dual enrollment program at RCC. Zakara, who can boast of a 4.3 grade point average, expects to graduate from both high school and RCC with an associate degree. Her guidance counselor, Kathy Page, and Hutt Williams, RCC’s dual enrollment advisor, helped chart Zakara's plan for graduation so that she is ready to take the next step in her journey. “All this hard work gets me closer to my goal and to get to the medical part of my education,” Zakara declares.
C
hristine Reddit graduated early from high school with a 4.2 grade-point average. “My dad was always talking about getting an education,” Christine notes. As the first person in her family to attend college, she could have chosen a four-year school, but by enrolling in the RCC ADN program she could stay close to home and as she explains, “be a nurse by the time I’m 21.” Christine graduated with an ADN in 2016 and is now pursuing her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing through Old Dominion University while working as a medical assistant at West Point Family Practice. “There are good people here,” Christine comments of RCC. “They are a resource for assistance and are always willing to help.”

Mr. Allan M. Langer
RCC’s outstanding faculty and students are driven to excel in the classroom and in life. Hannah entered RCC’s transfer degree program this fall which sets her on the pathway to a four-year degree after completing her associates. Biology Professor Lisa Merritt
Mary is a RCC student ambassador and participates in the workstudy program while pursuing her associates degree. Chemistry Professor Lekh Adhikari
Kimberly completed the fiber optic certification program through the Workforce and Community Development Center. Tim is working on his associates degree in pre-engineering. He takes many of his classes at RCC’s New Kent site, Bridging Communities Technical Center.
Vincent, a military veteran, earned an associates degree in pre-engineering and recently participated in the NASA Community College Scholars Program. He plans to attend ODU.
On a sunny morning in September, biology professor, Lisa Merritt, and chemistry professor, Lekh Adhikari join students at the wooded Glenns campus amphitheater. The Glenns Campus sports classrooms, labs, a lecture hall, a student lounge, and volleyball and tennis facilities, as well as walking trails, picnic areas and a large pond on its 100-acre wooded grounds. The quiet rolling hills of the 117-acre Warsaw campus are perfect for studying and outdoor activities. The property includes a scenic walking trail located behind the athletic field. The campus library is also the Richmond County Public Library – featuring special events, lectures and, more.
