Rosewell Visitor Center, Gloucester $20 With its 300 year history, the Rosewell Ruins exist today as a relic of America’s fabled past. From the earliest Native Americans to the post-Civil War industrialization, American history was forged at Rosewell. This course will take a chronological walk through the history of Rosewell and discover why Rosewell today stands as one of America’s most important historical sites and is referred to as America’s “Most Magnificent Mansion.”

RCC Glenns Campus $35 As we age, our financial priorities, decisions, and investment options change. This course is designed to help you navigate the basics of finances, wealth management, asset allocation, and income generation. This course will cover all of the entrylevel information you need to feel confident and educated in the management of your finances and investment decisions.

COURSE INSTRUCTOR: Clayton W. James, CFM, is a registered financial advisor and serves as the Managing Director of Jamestowne Investments, LLC. Clayton graduated from Hampden Sydney College in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematical economics, and has been helping investors in the investment management industry since 2003. Mr. James is currently Roswell’s President.

RCC Kilmarnock Center $35 Do you wonder what the different lights on your dashboard are telling you? Sometimes think the mechanic is just taking your money? The goal of this course is to help you become an educated and confident car owner and driver. Learn how to recognize trouble before a costly breakdown, how to drive safely in adverse conditions, how to save money on repairs, and more. In simple, non-technical language you’ll explore all aspects of your car from sounds, smells, dashboard lights, leaks, etc. Get tips on how to spot rip-offs and speak the same language as your car mechanic. Car Smart is designed for all car owners, new and veteran, young and old.

COURSE INSTRUCTOR: Bob Cerullo is an award-winning journalist, nationally known automotive writer, radio commentator, and author. He is an ASE Certified Automotive Technician and SAE Affiliate Member. Bob “The Car Guy” Cerullo has appeared on the David Letterman Show, ABC Nightly News, Good Morning America, and many other nationally recognized TV shows as well as radio shows. He is the author of several best-selling books, including “What’s Wrong with My Car,” “Shake, Rattle or Roll?” and “Don’t Get Stuck with a Lemon!” Currently, Bob’s radio show, “Interesting People Doing Interesting Things,” can be heard on WWND 103.9 Windy Radio.

Using Feng Shui to Clear Clutter 1-3pm

$20 Clutter is a universal problem in our busy world. Clearing clutter can change your life but can be difficult to do. There are so many decisions to make about each item and then what do you do with it all? In this class you will learn principles of feng shui to use as your guide to clearing your clutter more easily. Feng shui is the art of arranging your space to enhance your life.

She has helped thousands of individuals clear clutter to make room for new opportunities and dreams to manifest in their lives. Debbie is a Certified Professional Organizer ®, a Certified Organizer Coach® specializing in ADHD, feng shui practitioner, a professional speaker and the author of two books, “From Cluttered to Clear in Just One Year: Your Room-by-Rooms Home Makeover” and “Rock Scissors Paper: Understanding How Environment Affects Your Performance on a Daily Basis.”

Activities for a Smart Brain FRIDAY: 4/5 and 4/12

RCC Warsaw and Glenns Campus $35 As we mature, our brain undergoes changes that result in processing of information being less efficient. This interactive class will highlight research proven methods to help increase brain efficiency. Participants will participate in various handson activities and receive information on brain anatomy and physiology. Dr. Hill will deliver the course on the Warsaw campus and through interactive video to the Glenns campus.

COURSE INSTRUCTOR: Lisa K. Hill, Ph.D., is a professor of psychology at Rappahannock Community College. She has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Tennessee State University, a Master’s degree in clinical psychology from Fisk University, and a doctorate from Howard University in developmental psychology with a minor in neuropsychology. She has been teaching more than 15 years and has conducted research on various aspects of development.

A program of Rappahannock Community College’s Educational Foundation Mission: Recognizing that a vigorous mind is as necessary to a full life as are physical exercise and social relationships, RILL offers educational opportunities and intellectual enrichment for adults of any age. In a stimulating classroom environment, participants can acquire new knowledge, explore ideas, and share interests and experiences with like-minded community members. Classes: RILL’s noncredit college-level classes are held in several convenient locations within RCC’s service region. Some instructors may suggest specific preliminary reading material to prepare students to get the most from the course. This will be sent to registered students. The courses do not require prerequisites nor have tests. Evaluations by participants will provide valuable feedback for future offerings.

Arranging from the Spring Garden 1-3pm

Historic Places of Lancaster County: Homes, Courthouses, and More! 1-3pm

TUESDAY: 4/16, 4/23, 5/7 Various locations throughout Lancaster County

$35 The history of Lancaster County is preserved in its 18thto-20th-century religious, political, and domestic buildings, which connect us to the past through their historic fabric and surrounding cultural landscapes. Each session will include site visits and tours, incorporating recent archaeological discoveries, historical research, and landscape analyses which alter how we interpret the past and preserve these significant places. The Lancaster County Courthouse and nearby museum, Kamp’s Mill, Verville plantation house, Epping Forest (birthplace of Mary Ball Washington), and Monaskon Store will be explored with Dr. Brown and Mr. Harpole.

$45 (some supplies provided) Participants will practice two very different types of designs: a Japanese Ikebana design and English floral. Emphasis will be on spring bulbs supported by spring-blooming shrubs from the yard or garden. For the Japanese design, flat containers, aspidistra and grass materials, Harry Lauder’s walking stick and curly willow will be provided. Students should bring flower clippers, gloves, medium-sized urns or containers, Kenzan or needle-point holder, favorite flowers/flowering bulbs from the garden and spring foliage. More details provided upon registration.

COURSE INSTRUCTOR: Laura Anne Brooks is a certified teacher in Japanese Ikenobo Ikebana and in English Floral Design. Her design studio in King William, VA, is Designs from Dunluce. Her work is often featured in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. She is a frequent lecturer for the National Garden Clubs and Federated Clubs of Richmond, and teaches classes at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. She is a creative designer who arranges from the farm to the table.

COURSE INSTRUCTORS: Dr. David Brown and Thane Harpole received their Bachelor’s degrees in anthropology from the College of William and Mary and Master’s degrees in historical archaeology from the University of Massachusetts. They are founding members of the Werowocomoco Research Group and co-directors of The Fairfield Foundation in Gloucester County. Dr. Brown recently completed his dissertation in history at the College of William and Mary.

RCC Kilmarnock Center $35 This is a comprehensive class designed for seniors. The goal is to improve strength, flexibility, dexterity and balance, utilizing free weights, therabands, elastic tubing, yoga blocks, and balls. Students may do part of the class in a chair. Emphasis is on exercises and drills to build spatial awareness, improve or restore function, build muscle and assist in activities of daily living. Includes overview of basic muscle anatomy, dance for coordination, and dexterity/endurance challenges. Course will also cover preventing and recovering from a fall.

COURSE INSTRUCTOR: Meg Miller is a certified group fitness instructor who teaches senior fitness classes at the Northumberland YMCA. Before becoming involved in fitness instruction, Miller was a commercial waterman and has published a book of poetry.

$40 Genealogy is one of the most popular hobbies in the United States. Getting started can sometimes seem daunting. Where do you begin? This course will provide tips and strategies for beginning family research and uncovering unique family stories. It will include a discussion of basic genealogy terms and tools, the use of public and private records, internet sources, oral history, and DNA. Class participants will be guided through the research process and have the opportunity to begin their own family trees.

Registration and tuition are required prior to the start of classes, and early registration is strongly advised as class sizes are limited. Tuition is neither tax-deductible nor refundable.

COURSE INSTRUCTOR: Bessida Cauthorne White, a genealogist for nearly 40 years, is her church’s historian and historian for eight families. She is a founder of two genealogy societies and currently serves as president of the Middle Peninsula African-American Genealogical Historical Society. White manages the DNA results for 35 persons.

Taking the Mystery Out of Ancient Grains 1-4pm

MONDAY: 5/6 RCC Glenns Campus Culinary Lab

$55 (includes ingredients) You’ve probably seen the grains with funny names like farro and quinoa, also called “ancient grains,” but do you know what to do with them or what benefits they have? In this course you’ll learn how to transform wheatberries, farro, and quinoa into healthy and delicious meals. Students will make a mixed grain salad, wheatberry pilaf, and warm roasted vegetables with quinoa salad.

#295 Four Short Novels and Their Male Characters THURSDAY: 5/2, 5/9, 5/16

RCC Kilmarnock Center $35 In this discussion course, the focus will be on the male characters in four short novels (a total of 652 pages). What might be understood about men from reading four contemporary male writers: Norman McClean, Ian McEwan, Julian Barnes, and Philip Roth? The literary works will be: A River Runs Through It, On Chesil Beach, The Sense of an Ending, and Everyman.

COURSE INSTRUCTOR: Gail Wilson Kenna taught college and university classes for decades in foreign countries and in the United States. A published author of four books, a 2012 Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference scholarship winner, Kenna is the Creative Nonfiction judge for the Soul Keats literary competition in San Francisco, now in its 28th year. Since moving to the Northern Neck in 2004, she has taught numerous writing and literature courses for RILL.

COURSE INSTRUCTOR: Chef Castro’s love and passion for food began at home as young a child in California’s San Joaquin Valley. As a student at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park New York, Chef Castro’s culinary mind expanded from regional California cuisine and Mexican food, to a wide variety of delectable foods from around the world. Since then his culinary journey has taken him to some of the finest resorts and country clubs in the U.S. Chef Castro is excited about sharing what he knows with our RCC community.
