I am Charles Sanders Pierce And I am Ferdinand de Saussure, and we are know as two of the founding fathers of semiotics/semiology. Yet we both have a different understanding of the core ideas of this subjuct.

I perceived a sign to be the simplest unit of signication

Semiotics/Semiology is a theoretical framework that can be applied to the study of images that can help simplify an image into a collection of signs; it is a theory that resulted from the study of language (linguistics). The term is used to descibe how a sign is formed from a signifier and the signified; the term signifier is used to describe the form in which a sign is presented and the term signified is used to refer to the idea that the sign is intended to imply.

For my theory I broke a ‘sign’ down into these two entities which I named ‘signified’ and ‘signifier’

I was born 26th November 1857 and passed away 22nd February 1913 in Vufflens-le-Chateau, Switzerland
I was born into a well-know family of Swiss scientists in Geneva
At the University of Geneva I studied the languages of Latin, Greek and Sankrit
In 1876 I undertook graduate work at the University of Leipzig, I was awarded my Doctorate in the language of Sankrit when I returned in 1880
I then lectured at Ecole pratique des hautes etudes until 1891 when I was offered a professorship in Geneva After being offered a professorship, I lectured at the University of Geneva until 1911
My work had influenced that of; Roland Barnes who was a philosopher, critic, linguist and semiotician. And Jacques Lacam, a renowned psychoanalyst and psychiatrist although working in a different field

I believe that a sign is made from three entrities; an object, an interpretant and a representamen
I was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts September the 10th 1839 and died in Milfor, Pennsulvania April the 19th 1914
My father was a professor of astronomy and mathematics at Harvard University, so I was studied to a obtain a degree in chemistry in 1863
I then worked in several scientically industries for approximately 16 years
My work both influenced and took influence from the ideas of my close friend William James, the difference between our ideas of pragmatism is that my work is a theory of meaning whereas James’ work is a theory of the truth I had also influenced some students and colleages while lecturing at John Hopkins University from 1879; some of these people included Oscar Mitchell, Fabien Franklin and Christine Ladd-Franklin The work I had done on semiotics and metaphysics had also influenced the work of Josiah Royce
These signs are the only signs used on UK roads that is octagonal in shape; the element to the sign does not affect the message delivered by the sign. The sign could be made circular in shape but as long as the critical elements; the red background and the white “stop” were kept the same then the message “stop here” would still be as strongly suggested.
The ‘object’ here is the internet, also known as the ‘sign’.
I disagree, the ‘sign’ would be the word/logo ‘Google’
In my theory the word/logo is the ‘representamen’
Ok then, what would you say the ‘signified’ is?
You mean the ‘interpretent’, it depends where the object is seen as it effects the ‘interpretent’, for example, the Google logo on a car with cameras wouldn’t make you think of the search engine but of Google maps.
Good theory, mine is similar but more basic, the ‘signified’ would be what the logo represents.
