As Official Partner to Team GB, we’ll work with the British Olympic Association (BOA) to deliver key initiatives including Get Set, the organisation’s youth engagement programme, and HomeGrown Heroes, an initiative to connect local athletes with their local community. Matthew Barnes, CEO for Aldi UK and Ireland, said “Our partnership with Team GB is the perfect way to celebrate our landmark 25th anniversary in the UK. We’re truly honoured to be supporting the extraordinary Team GB athletes on the road to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.”

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

In the first modern Olympics, Athens 1896, first place winners were awarded silver medals and olive branches. Second place contestants were awarded bronze medals and third place finishers left empty handed. The first Olympic city to award Gold, Silver and Bronze medals was St. Louis in 1904.

DID YOU KNOW?

The five rings of the Olympic flag symbolise the continents: Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Americas and are said to be ‘linked together in friendship.’ At least one of the rings’ colours – blue, black, green, yellow and red – appear on every national flag of the world.

Back in March we announced a major partnership to support Team GB’s athletes, up to and during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

IS REALLY SOMETHING!

Aldi Store Manager

and

I’m really proud of our tie-up with the British Olympic Association. The greater our involvement, the more I realise how much we share the same values. We at Aldi strive on a daily basis to achieve our personal bests, working tirelessly to contribute to our ongoing success, very much like the athletes within the GB Olympic team that have shown such dedication and single mindedness to achieve their very best. I am looking forward to the synergies between us proving to be a winning partnership for the future. 2015 has, as expected, proved to be a year of significant change within the UK and Irish businesses. It is with great excitement that we have seen the opening of our fantastic new Regional Distribution Centre in Yorkshire, situated in the town of Goldthorpe, which represents a significant investment in the local area and a great springboard for our future plans for more stores.

...yet!

In April we wished Roman Heini farewell as he headed back to Germany after being such a key part of our development and success over recent years. I’m very grateful to him for all his help and support and on behalf of us all, I wish him the very best for the future. We have seen lots of exciting change in the team here and I welcome Dan and Giles into position later in the Summer as the two new Group Managing Directors. They will join me as part of a new team which will ensure we are ready to cope with the challenges of the coming years.

Supported by Aldi… This year we are proud to continue to support the following charities, which all work hard to make a positive impact on the lives of others: UK Barnardo’s is one of the UK’s leading charities, working directly with over 200,000 vulnerable children and young people and helping them transform their lives and fulfill their potential. Last year Aldi donated £25,000 to Barnardo’s. The Prince’s Trust supports young people to achieve more through education and employment opportunities. Last year Aldi donated £25,000 to The Prince’s Trust. Ireland The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVP) The SVP is an international Christian voluntary organisation dedicated to tackling poverty by providing practical assistance to those in need. Working with The RSPB

In March we opened our second store in Salford and our biggest store to date, 1600m2 of retail space, (yeah, that big!) with our special golden ticket event at Irlams o’ th’ Height. The grand opening saw over 120 customers queueing from the early hours of the morning to get their hands on our coveted prizes which included, a 32‘ Full HD LED TV, a hamper of Aldi goodies and vouchers to spend in store. The new Irlams o’ th’ Height features around 1350 product lines and 3000 ‘Specialbuy’ lines and has created 25 jobs for the community. Great news for Salford and Aldi. Here’s to the future!

Drum roll please…

We are delighted to announce our new partnership with The RSPB. The charity, which works to protect nature and the wider countryside, will receive the proceeds from the sale of our new single use carrier bags in England and Wales.

Carbon Trust award-winner 2015! We’re very proud to have recently achieved the ‘Best in Intensity Carbon Reduction’ award at the prestigious Carbon Trust Standard Bearer’s conference.

Through our three-year partnership, a generation of over half a million children will be taught to value wildlife.

Aldi beat off 200 other companies to receive the award. The achievement acknowledges the phenomenal work we have done in successfully reducing our carbon intensity by over 27% despite rapid business growth. Winning ways: 100 solar panel systems installed across our stores Waste heat from our refrigeration plant collected and re-used Energy surveys to identify savings opportunities across our portfolio.

“We’re delighted to have Aldi join us on our road to Baku 2015. The tills haven’t just made us more efficient, they have added to the overall athlete shopping experience and have even given us the confidence we can achieve our target of ensuring the upcoming Rio 2016 Olympic Games.” Baku 2015 Team GB Chef de Mission, Mark England

For more information about Aldi’s partnership with Team GB, please visit aldi.co.uk.

Aldi staff have helped set the first Team GB record of the summer, all without a single athlete competing.

Thanks to Aldi, Team GB recorded one of the fastest ‘Kitting Outs’ to date, a total of five hours faster than in previous years. It’s all part of Team GB’s challenge to make the ‘Kitting Out’ process faster than that delivered for the London 2012 Olympics in preparation for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Thanks to the introduction of Aldi’s efficient checkouts staff were able to shave an impressive two minutes off the process for each of Team GB’s athletes. And more than 150 athletes descend upon Birmingham’s NEC arena to receive their kit ahead of the Baku 2015 European Games. Job well done. Good work team!

Giles Hurley, Group Managing Director of Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “We are truly honoured to be supporting the talented Team GB athletes on the road to the Baku 2015 European Games. We are committed to offering the highest quality products at everyday great value prices; running our stores efficiently is the key to this and helps to reduce queuing times for everyone, including Team GB! ‘’It’s great to be able to bring Aldi’s approach to the ‘Kitting Out’ operation as we work with Team GB to ensure the process runs as smoothly as possible ahead of the athletes’ journey to Baku.’’ Phillip Graves, Team GB Triathlete, said: “’Kitting Out’ has been amazing. Putting on the Olympic Rings for the first time today was a very proud moment and it’s made me really excited for the Games – I just can’t wait to get out there. It’s great to have support from Aldi for Baku 2015 and collecting my kit from an actual checkout has been a fun way to end the day.”
