Clinicians Dr. Betsy Cook Weber
Dr. Betsy Cook Weber is Professor of Music and Director of Choral Studies at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music. She teaches a full load of coursework at the undergraduate and graduate levels, oversees the large and varied choral area at the Moores School, and is also active internationally as a conductor, clinician, adjudicator, and lecturer. Before coming to the University of Houston, Weber taught vocal music, K-12, in the public schools. Choirs under Weber’s direction, including the Moores School Concert Chorale, have been featured at multiple state and national conventions. Internationally, Chorale has won prizes and received acclaim at prestigious competitions in Wales and France. In May of 2013, Weber led the Chorale to a first-place finish as one of only ten choirs world-wide selected to compete in the famous International Chamber Choir Competition in Marktoberdorf, Germany. Comments about her choral work include “de luxe singing, eliciting admiration and gratitude,” “wonderfully elegant and humorous,” “sophisticated choir --- expertly prepared and with a finely-tuned corporate ear.” She has prepared singers for Da Camera, for early music orchestras Ars Lyrica and Mercury Houston, and is also routinely called upon to prepare singers for touring shows, including Josh Groban, NBC’s Clash of the Choirs, Telemundo’s Latin Grammy’s, Star Wars in Concert, and Andrea Bocelli. In the fall of 2014, Weber became director of the Houston Symphony Chorus. She served from 1990 - 1997 as Assistant and, later, Associate Director of this historic ensemble, helping prepare major works for renowned conductors including Robert Shaw, Christoph Eschenbach, Roger Wagner, Nicholas McKegan, and Christopher Seaman. Weber is the 13th person and 1st woman to receive the Texas Choral Director Association’s coveted Texas Choirmaster Award and is editor of the Betsy Cook Weber choral series with Alliance Music Publishing. She holds degrees from the University of North Texas, Westminster Choir College (Princeton, NJ), and the University of Houston.

The Maynard Jackson School Choral Program strives to enrich our community and surrounding communities with vocal music and an overall appreciation for music. Our philosophy of music education is to give students the knowledge, the discipline, and the drive to deliver a quality musical product for others and themselves. We stress the importance of not settling for a “generic” sound, effort, or performance, but to constantly strive to achieve the superb so that the experiences of great performances will stay with them throughout their lives. Dedication to the craft is a pivotal point of our teaching, and students are encouraged to not “surface” sing and play, but to dive deep into all aspects of music, including: theory skills, musical expression, improvisation, sight-singing and reading, harmonic structure, and performance skills. We strive to turn out student musicians that have not only had a great high school musical experience, but who will carry this experience with them into adulthood. This hard work and dedication is something that we hope students will take into every aspect of their lives, whether that focus is in music or some other career field. The Concert Choir makes and annual trip to sing at the Presidential Jimmy Carter Center during the Christmas Holiday. The Concert Choir is always in demand to perform at various events and venues throughout the greater Atlanta Metro area. Deo Dicamus Gratias Non Nobis Domine

The SEBHS Advanced Chorus has performed for the Governor’s office multiple times, both in Atlanta and at home. They have also performed at Southern Star, taking the Sweepstakes trophy for highest scoring choir, and most recently the Championship for highest scoring musical group overall. This group also rated in the top three mixed choirs at Disney’s National Competition in 2013. In 2015, the group traveled to Carnegie Hall, received superior ratings in Queens, performed a world-premiere by Dan Forrest under the direction of Z. Randall Stroope, and finally performed Eric Whitacer’s “Nox Aurumque” by themselves as a showcase choir. Many individual students in our program have gone on to produce albums, tour in bands, and receive full scholarships to both public and private universities. Music is truly a way of life for us here at Southeast Bulloch High School, and we are striving, every day, to provide a top choral music education/experience to our students.

While the Georgia Southern campus is large – nearly 1000 acres, 20,000+ students – you will find a place among a number of smaller communities of outstanding professors and our friendly and personal environment will provide you with the individual attention you need for success. At Georgia Southern, you will experience the best of both a large scale and small feel environment.
