Mise en scene

Mise-en-scene

Locations UEA The final location in our music video is by the lake at the University of East Anglia. This environment is aesthetically-pleasing and a visually interesting setting. It could also be interpreted as a metaphorical space – the wide open expanses could convey the character's feelings of isolation as she waits alone. In addition, the weather outside could be used symbolically, as it is likely to be cloudy when we film, this could be used to represent the mood of the character at this point in the narrative.

Bedroom Another location which we will be using in the music video is the character's bedroom, which is a seen as a very personal place. Starting the video in the character's room will allow the intended audience to immediately connect with the character as they see her where people are most themselves. This will also allow some character exposition, because bedrooms are commonly representative of aspects of their owners' personality. The room's large window should provide bright natural light for our shoot.

Props We will shoot some close-up shots of props within our character's bedroom to help to establish our character. There is a shelf on the wall of the room and we will be able to organise props on this. For example, we will position some books in her room, including some poetry collections which could present the romantic side of our character, which will also be reinforced by the lit candles in the room. In addition, we will place some novels in the room, possibly on the shelf, which are targeted towards teenagers/young adults (the age of the character and our intended audience as well). This will make the character more easy to relate to and help us to interpolate our audience, allowing us to reach our target audience with similar interests.

Costume Clothing The first costume which our character wears in the music video is a burgundy skater dress with black fishnet tights. Having been a signifier of the punk subculture, fishnets continue to be a common element of alternative fashion, making them an appropriate accessory for our indie artist; we have seen the original artist wearing them in some her Instagram posts, and other female indie artists also wear them.

Makeup Although our character's makeup is quite understated, it could appeal to our target audience because it follows some current beauty trends such as the use of contouring. Makeup is quite important in the lives of some teenage girls (our target audience) because it can be a liberating form of self-expression, so we have included it as a prop in our video and we even show the character applying lipstick; this is also partly influenced by the music video for 'White's Not My Color This Evening' by Cherry Glazerr.
