2022
Selling Beauty for 30+ years Hello, The Dutch bulb industry has seen a major change in the worldwide demand for flower bulbs since the beginning of Covid. Our Exporter anticipates another year of “shortages”. A word of advice! Please do not leave your flower bulb order until the end of August. For this season, 2022, there are some changes to our selection of flower bulbs. You will notice some old favourites are no longer in the catalogue. A lot of the older varieties have health issues with fusarium. My Exporter recommended it is time to replace the weak and sick for stronger and healthier garden varieties. A couple that come to mind are: Hyacinth Carnegie, (sub White Pearl) Tulip Apricot Magic, (sub Salmon Prince) Tulip Rosalie, (sub Gabriella), Tulip Dynasty, (sub Milkshake), Narcissus Mounthood, (sub Pure White) In the past few years there has been a big shift for Cities, Towns and Municipalities around the world to promote biodiversity with their plantings in public spaces to support the bee and butterfly populations. Many early varieties of flower bulbs offer a great source of food for the bees, butterflies and insects. In early spring when there is not much food available for the insects and you can help by planting a plethora of early flowering bulbs. Varieties to consider are crocuses, botanical tulips, muscari, scillas, puschkinia, chionodoxa, and narcissus have become real favourites for the part they play in their contribution to biodiversity. Alliums and camassia are also ideal bulbs to plant for later blooming flowers in the garden that attract bees. Another popular trend in the flower bulb business is the pre mixed flower bulb combinations. The mixes TradeWinds offer have been created with the outmost of care in the consideration of its blooming habits and provide a variety of colours, and shapes. They also keep producing new flowers over time and extend the flowering period throughout the spring. Mixes need to be ordered by July 29.2022. If you ever have questions with regards to varieties, figuring out quantities, or you need help with how to incorporate flower bulbs into a client’s garden do not hesitate to call and we will gladly assist you. Thank you for your continued support. Wishing you all the success with your businesses. Stay Safe!

BIODIVERSITY BIODIVERSITY Biodiversity is a term we use to denote the richness of nature. It is about the great diversity of animals, plants, habitats and genes. Biodiversity, through its interaction with environmental factors, creates ecosystems in which organisms, such as humans, can live. The habitats of bees and butterflies have become smaller and smaller and have also become further and further apart. Flowery roadsides, gardens and public green spaces can form an important link between the habitats.
BULBS ATTRACTING BEES & BUTTERFLIES The bulbs that attract bees and butterflies include: Allium sphaerocephalon, moly, giganteum Nectaroscordum siculum Crocus (species and large flowering) Chionodoxa luciliae Scilla siberica Muscari armeniacum and aucheri varieties Galanthus Hyacinthoides non-scripta Eranthis Botanical tulips Anemone blanda Ornithogalum Leucojum aestivum

COMBINATIONS OF BULBS AND OTHER PLANTS BULBS WITH PERENNIALS, HERBS AND ANNUALS Consider planting flower bulbs in and amongst your customer’s perennials. This way the flower bulb plantings do not interfere with your annual plantings. A couple of 100 narcissus, hyacinths, tulips and alliums, camassia and minor bulbs in and amongst perennials in the gardens are great additions to a mid-spring garden.
A couple of combination suggestions to make your job easier. Spring bulbs and perennials: Tulips Spring Green + Iris sibirica ‘Snow Queen’ Tulip Toronto + Geranium vericolor Tulip Parade + Dicentra spectabilis ‘Alba’ Tulip Ballade + Geranium ‘Mayflower’ Tulip Mount Tacoma + Hosta ‘Albo marginata’ Narcissus Mount Hood + Nepeta Six Hill Giant Narcissus Carlton + Brunnera macrophylla ‘Jack Frost’ Narcissus Pink Charm + Cimicifuga ramosa Leucojum Gr. Giant + Geranium Magnificum Hyacinth Jan Bos + Penstemon ‘Husker Red’ Chionodoxa forbesii + Brunnera Machrophylla ‘Langtrees’ Allium Globemaster + Iris sibirica ‘Caesar’s Brother’

MACHINE PLANTING With our special planting machine it is possible to establish mass plantings of flower bulbs undergrass in turf areas such as parks, boulevards and street allowances. For many years we have used our machine for large plantings in Holland, the United Kingdom, Europe and Canada. A very cost-effective method to plant large quantities of flower bulbs in grass areas with a striking result. Many varieties of flower bulbs are suitable for machine planting. It is possible to choose early flowering varieties/mixtures for areas with an intensive mowing schedule. On the other hand a special mixture with an extended flowering time can be used in areas with a more natural, rough appearance and late mowing. Under the right circumstances it is possible to plant 10,000 daffodils or 25,000 crocuses/miscellaneous bulbs per hour. To achieve the best result it is important to follow our instructions and most important: the number of bulbs per m. sq. Planting machine
Two rotating knives open turf just before plant feet
On our website www.tradewindsinternational.ca you can view a 3 minute informative video showing you exactly how the planting machine works. There will be current pictures of the work we have done along with additional information.
