A BOU T I am 24, living in the inner west of Sydney, and aim to finish my Master of Architecture degree at the end of 2014. I have approached my study of architecture from an artistic background, and am interested in phenomenological architecture that provokes an emotional response from the people who use it. I am inspired by architecture that is layered, textural, and thoughtfully detailed. I want to work for a firm that is passionate about beautiful design.

This project was part of a core subject of the Masters Program: a digital research studio, where explorations using Rhinoceroses and Grasshopper software were encouraged. The Bondi Envelope, located on Bondi Road, is a mixed community housing project comprising of social housing and private market based apartments to promote mutually beneficial interaction between social groups. The project is based on a study of housing prototypes that are concerned with differentiating private and public zones, and as a result, the Bondi Envelope has a large proportion of semi-private zones, located in large voids, extensive circulation paths and recreational areas. Left: Iterative concept models Right: Sectional drawing
The project developed from a geometric study of the site’s envelope, using the locations and heights of the surrounding buildings to create planes that intersected within the site. Cubist paintings were used as a precedent to interpret the intersection of these cutplanes, and as a result, the envelope began to be fragmented, with the resulted geometries being treated in different ways to design the building. Left: front elevational drawings Top right: exploded axonometric drawing Bottom right: cafe render
The fractured geometries were subtracted from some areas of the site in response to site conditions, and maintained as voids within the building in other areas. At one critical point, we moved from trying to develop a monolithic form in which a plan was stretched and manipulated to fit within our desired envelop, we instead separated the façade from the building, and as such ‘the two systems (skeleton and skin) were allowed to evolve independently from one another’ (Klinger, 2001). The project was hence divided into an internal building and an external lightweight frame that maintains the developed geometry of the envelope and acts as a second skin. The frame is clad with a perforated metal sheeting in which the size of the holes respond to the different needs of privacy at different points of the program. The space between these two skins is the pivotal zone of our building; in private apartment areas, the space between building and frame locates balconies, which connect the user back to the street. Essentially, this project combines studies of privacy and cubism to create a manipulated envelope that responds to its environment and creates spaces that encourage interaction between the different social groups using the building through semi-public zones. SCUL PT URE B Y TH E SEA IN F O PAV ILI O N
The purpose of this project was to design two information and catalogue selling pavilions at the start and end of the Sculpture by the Sea walk, as part of a larger masterplan. We started our masterplan with an exploration of memory at sculpture by the sea. These drawings and plaster models explore both individual and public memories.

The recycled pallets were layered and infilled in a way that from some angles created a sense of transparency, while when infilled represented the layered memory of the event. Photographs: 1:1 model of components and joints Bottom left: sectional drawing Top right: pavilion render

Our project during an intensive elective based in Broken Hill was to masterplan the main street to capitalise on the town’s pending UNESCO world heritage city listing. We developed a conceptual scheme of a networked city that would create a dense and lively urban area around the main street. This project was in collaboration with a group of business students who produced a business plan as part of this proposal.
city-scale The concept of ‘network city’ is first applied at a city scale, where existing networks are identified, so that the significance of current and new networks with Argent Street are clear. At an urban scale, the city is linked with external communities by highways and trails, while internal networks that use roads and footpaths between points of interest for the community will be the focus of this network development. PUBLIC SPACE RESIDENTIAL COMMERCIAL EXTERNAL NETWORKS LOCAL NETWORKS
street-scale At a smaller scale, localised networks can be identified, especially between individual businesses. Argent street operates as a trail that creates a journey between important nodes of activity, where links are developed between shops, restaurants and other businesses. Within this network, public spaces have been identified as spaces that have the potential to act as meeting places to bring people together. The relocation of the tourist information office to within the town hall faรงade will provide a way for tourists to directly interact with the heritage architecture of Broken Hill, while the public space at the rear of the faรงade will provide an opportunity for the local community to engage with this heritage also.
