What if you could design your own education? Imagine having the academic freedom to customize your college experience to your interests.
At SLC, you can. A Sarah Lawrence College education is a journey. There’s no better place to explore what matters most to you and to pursue your career passions, whatever they may be.
. . . about the education Going beyond any traditional major, you’ll design an individualized program with your faculty adviser (aka your “don”).
In small seminars of 12-15 students, you’ll exchange and connect ideas in lively discussions with professors and classmates alike.
You’ll work one-on-one with professors on independent projects every semester (what we call “conference work”).
In every class, you’ll receive personalized written and verbal feedback to develop the critical skills essential for life after college.
SLC at a Glance CHARACTER
ACADEMIC PROGRAM
Founded in 1926, SLC is a coeducational liberal arts and sciences college with a distinctive academic philosophy emphasizing the individual student.
The academic structure combines small seminar classes with individual, biweekly studentfaculty conferences. Students choose freely from among the following areas with the guidance of their faculty advisor (or “don”)
CAMPUS Sarah Lawrence College occupies 44 wooded acres in Yonkers, NY, near the village of Bronxville— just north of New York City. A 30-minute train ride from the Bronxville station takes students into Midtown Manhattan.
FACILITIES In addition to our round-tabled classrooms, SLC has outstanding theatres, art and performance studios, and music spaces; modern science labs; state-of-theart graphic computing equipment; competitive sports facilities; a 60,000-square-foot visual arts center; and recently renovated dining facilities.
STUDENT BODY Our students are men and women who share an enthusiasm for intellectual rigor, academic risk taking, creativity in all disciplines, and original and interdisciplinary work. We are particularly committed to having our faculty, administration, and student body reflect the social, racial, and economic diversity that characterizes our society. The College’s 1,400 under graduate students come from nearly every state and from 35 countries. 85 percent of students live on campus.
FACULTY With a 10:1 student-faculty ratio, small seminars comprising more than 90 percent of all classes, and individual one-on-one independent projects a key part of every seminar, SLC faculty have twice the student contact as professors at other institutions.
