The Student-Athlete

Experience Like their mascot, the mythological Gryphon, student-athletes at Sarah Lawrence combine intelligence and strength to follow their passions and discover their potential— in academics and in athletics. SLC students challenge themselves to excel in the classroom and in the field of play, bringing intensity and integrity to all their endeavors. In fact, Sarah Lawrence athletes consistently earn recognition on all-conference teams, year after year. At Sarah Lawrence, participation in intercollegiate sports is fully integrated into the educational process and experience. Gryphons are active members of a campus community that values cultural diversity and gender equity, fostering a spirit of cooperation, leadership, commitment, and mutual respect. In short, true sportsmanship.

SLC gave me a hunger for learning and accomplishment, allowing me not only to explore all of my interests, but also to really excel in each of them. Sports have always been one of my favorite pastimes, but SLC let me bring it to the forefront along with my academics. I didn’t have to choose which one I wanted to focus on because I could fully engage in both. — Xina Graham-Vannais

Rigorous Academics Competitive Athletics

Athletics at SLC

Go Gryphons! Sarah Lawrence sponsors 15 intercollegiate athletic teams as well as two club teams: women’s basketball and women’s golf. SLC is a provisional member of NCAA Division III on pace for full membership by the 2016-17 academic year. The Gryphons compete against area colleges in the Skyline Conference, Intercollegiate Horse Show Association, and United States Rowing Association.

The Gryphons compete at the intercollegiate level in the following sports: • Men’s Basketball

• Equestrian (Coed)

• Women’s Swimming

• Men’s Crew

The dynamics of the Sarah Lawrence equestrian team are spectacular. Horseback riding is typically an individual sport, but our team functions as one unit. We support one another fully during competitions, and when one rider does well, we’ve all succeeded. I think the success of our team has everything to do with the guidance of our amazing coach. — Scheherazad Al-Salamin

The first time I met the team I knew there was solidarity on and off the pitch. We’re all great friends and look out for each other. There’s no strange dynamic between the upper and lower classmen; everyone gets along well no matter what their year at SLC is. — Philip Naess

Playing for the

Love of the Game

Sarah Lawrence is now a provisional member of NCAA Division III. Like many other small liberal arts colleges, the Gryphons chose Division III for its emphasis on balancing the overall student experience. Student-athletes can keep their primary focus on academics while participating in a highly competitive sports program. There are nearly 450 member schools in DIII, making it the largest division of the NCAA. Division III programs place special importance on the impact of sports on the participants, rather than the spectators. Because the student-athlete’s experience is of paramount concern, the playing season and eligibility standards minimize conflicts between athletics and academics. DIII features student-athletes who are subject to the same admission and academic standards as the general student body. Students play for the love of the game, without the obligation of an athletics scholarship. And DIII coaches play a significant role as educators and mentors.

Being a part of Sarah Lawrence’s basketball program is truly exciting. With classes, practices, and games, the workload can be heavy. But seeing the team come together through the season is really fulfilling. In games, it’s so rewarding to execute plays correctly after hours of practice. The pinnacle, though, is looking at the smiles on my teammates’ faces after a win. — Greg Smith

I’ve learned a lot from my coaches. They’ve each taught me new drills and exercises, new ways to push myself. On a deeper level, they’ve strengthened my love of sport. Each of them has been dedicated and committed to our teams, exemplifying determination, passion, and drive. It certainly makes me work harder. — Brooklynn Moore

Recreation The Department of Athletics and Physical Education offers students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to participate in a variety of recreational sports. Intramurals are a fun, low-pressure way to compete in sports such as basketball, soccer, Ultimate Frisbee, and volleyball. Special events and off-campus outings are a great chance to try activities like archery, rock climbing, and skiing. And seasonal wellness programs promote health and fitness—and build camaraderie.

Physical Education The physical education program at Sarah Lawrence emphasizes participation and enjoyment in a noncompetitive atmosphere. Students are required to take four PE credits, two of which must be completed in the first year. The College offers an average of 30 courses each semester, including group and individual activities, both indoors and outdoors. Courses vary seasonally and include yoga, tai chi, dance, tennis, swimming, bowling, ice skating, and fencing. Suggestions for new activities are always welcome.

Campbell Sports Center A modern 48,000-square-foot facility, the Campbell Sports Center offers students a variety of recreational and athletic opportunities. The sports center includes a gymnasium with two basketball courts, an elevated indoor jogging track, an indoor swimming pool, three squash courts, two student lounges, a rowing tank, and a studio that provides space for activities ranging from aerobics to dance to fencing. The sports center also houses the Caspar Whitney Fitness Center, which features a variety of cardiovascular equipment including treadmills, elliptical trainers, climbers, stationary bikes, and rowing ergometers, as well as a Cybex weight-training circuit, a free weight area, and a Treadwall. Outdoor facilities on campus include tennis courts and a softball field.

Sarah Lawrence was a clear choice for me: academic freedom and quality professors invested in my work. The College also fosters a balanced experience, spanning academics, internships, and athletics. Being an SLC student-athlete enhanced my work ethic, drive, and competence, and it’s been great to be a part of the young, growing men’s volleyball program. —Brent Terry

Sarah Lawrence is the perfect place to discover yourself and grow into the person you want to be. Because you’re able to establish close relationships with professors and coaches, they learn so much about you as a student and an athlete. They know your tendencies, strengths, and weaknesses, and this allows them to help you learn and grow. There is no place I’d rather be. — Aili Arnell

Our Mascot: The Gryphon Sarah Lawrence College’s official mascot is the Gryphon. This mythological creature is depicted as having the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion. For centuries, the Gryphon has been a symbol of intelligence and strength.

I’m an independent, unique, unconventional thinker and an academically driven, career-motivated student. For those people who know me, it is also abundantly clear that being an athlete is a large part of my identity. I didn’t realize it fully until I started to swim for the Gryphons. I revel in the water, I love the team, and we have a phenomenal coach. — Dzana Ashworth
