writing GOING FOR GOLD
This is one of the final stories of my writing career. Not only am I proud of my progress throughout my experience as a writer, but also of the staff that I worked with; having had the opportunity to travel with them to New York City to accept their award. This trip changed my outlook as a student journalist; motivating me to achieve greatness in the rest of my yearbook career.

VERSACE AND VERONA
I chose this piece because I felt as though my coverage of the IB theater production of Romeo and Juliet was a turning point in my writing career. This is due to my new-found comfort level with my interviewing, and finally being able to capture the essence of our theme, “There’s More 2 It” through my multiple viewings of the production, in addition to the countless interviews with the cast to ensure I was getting the most of the story.
This piece is close to my heart in many ways. Not only was this my first traditional story, but I was also friends with the girl for whom the memorial gathering was for. I am very proud of the depth I was able to achieve as a novice with no interviewing skill, in addition to the awards I received for this spread.

STANDING FOR CHANGE
Simplicity and Adversity is an accurate description of my experience while writing this page. After receiving the task of writing a story about the first day/week of school, my editors made the decision to re-design my page and change my assignment a three times before settling on this alternative coverage design. With this, I am proud of the final product, in addition to the award I receiced for the spread.

Like Versace and Verona, I felt as though I was pushed to my limits while writing this story. Although this page was not submitted for any awards or recognition, it is one of my favorite stories. This is because I worked tirelessly to stay neutral regarding my opinons about a woman’s right to choose through my story telling techniques, focusing solely on reporting what occured at the event.

After the tremendous snowfall last winter, we knew we needed to include some coverage that would capture the attention of our readers. After about six different designs, I finally arrived at this one. I chose to submit it because of the landscape background photo layered with text, transparencies and additional photos.

PRINCESS AND THE PEA
2014 Fentonian “One” This page was an easy pick for me. First, this was my first-ever play page, which was made better by the fantastic photos we had from the event. Additionally I was able to include my own photos from a trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts during that week, which made the spread more personal.

MIPA SAMPLE LIFESTYLES
2015 Fentonian Prep from the MIPA Summer Workshop This year I, along with most of the editors from our staff, had the opportunity to attend the annual MIPA Summer Workshop at Michigan State University. Here, my co editor and I were able to brainstorm ideas for how we wanted this book to look, in addition to creating some sample spreads. This was one of my favorites that I made because of the use of subtle angles to portray our theme, in addition to the fantastic color composition of the photos we were provided with.

2015 Fentonian “Same Story, Different Angle” 2015 Fentonian “Same Story, Different Angle” This spread stood out to me for many reasons. To begin, I liked how colorful the photos were and how they were able to enhance the use of spot color throughout the page. Also, I am proud of the prorgressing sequence of events in the dominant caption, in addition to the subsequent theater package on the bottom left.

This year, as co-Editor-in-Chief, my task was to design our cover. After months of work to come up with a theme, we decided on “Same Story, Different Angle”. With this, when coming up with a design, I observed some of our past books and decided that we needed a breath of fresh air; avoiding photo collages, and switching to bright complementary colors and new shapes to achieve a “Different Angle”.

I chose this one, not only because it was the first spread I ever designed for our section, but I felt it to be one of my best. The elements of spot-color and transparent package headlines, along with the photo quality and color composition of those photos, in my opinion made the spread a success.

I chose this spread because I am proud of how it turned out despite the limited photo selection we had due to having three consecutive snow days. Normally this wouldn’t have posed any issues for us, however this was our spirit week. Aside from this, I take pride in the headline design and the use of alternate story structure.
