strategic partnership proposal Adelaide High School
working with you‌
Introduction Adelaide High School is a culturally diverse, safe, welcoming and dynamic learning community with a heartbeat and soul shaped by students, staff, families, Old Scholars and the wider community. Founded in 1908, Adelaide High School is the oldest Education Department Secondary School in the Commonwealth. The school caters for a broad range of interests, abilities and backgrounds through a comprehensive secondary curriculum and diverse co-curriculum offering for students.
Motto Non scholae sed vitae Not only for school but for life Adelaide High School encourages the social, emotional, intellectual and physical development of all members of the community. Respect, resilience and optimism help all to flourish. As a community of learners, Adelaide High School nurtures independence, creativity and collaboration. Curiosity and innovation motivate students to excel individually and collectively.
Learning at Adelaide High School expands beyond the classroom, with a diversity of offerings from specialist language and sporting programs to performing arts, national and international exchanges, strategic partnerships, outdoor education, leadership opportunities and the development of skills for life. Students are encouraged and flourish through reflective, innovative and contemporary practices, which are both engaging and challenging. Students of Adelaide High School have committed to promoting intercultural awareness and international understanding. As a community, the school celebrates diversity, and actively connects through iconic national and global exchanges. They reflect on their past and learn in the present to shape the future.
Graduates Graduates of Adelaide High School are life long learners and compassionate, positive and contributing global citizens, prepared and able to make a difference in the world in which they live.
But more than that, Old Scholars are connected to their Adelaide High School community not just for school, but for life. Connections are evident in ongoing engagement through the Old Scholars’ Association (founded in 1911), attendance at the annual dinner, the Head of the River event, and the delight of ‘old girls’ and former prefects as they celebrate leadership during the yearly Conversazione afternoon tea.
Today Hidden behind the nationally significant twentieth-century main administration building is an internationally-minded centre for excellence in learning and operational excellence in education accredited by the Council of International Schools. The heart and soul of Adelaide High School beats with purpose.
Our Understanding of the Brief There has been a significant change in the public education system affecting Adelaide High School including the newly built Adelaide Botanic High School, Year 7s entering the secondary school stream in 2022, and a new building program at Adelaide High School facilitating the expansion from 1500 to 1800 students. Years past have seen the implementation of numerous communication platforms over multiple channels where duplications and opportunities co-exist. Across these platforms the parent, student and staff community access information on the operational aspects of the school, while the broader community seek information regarding the culture of celebrating students, enrolments, and the direct comparison of Adelaide High School to other like schools.
The primary objective of the website, publications, and brand refresh is to ensure the confluence of all communication and marketing so that it ethically and authentically conveys the heartbeat and soul of Adelaide High School. The brand refresh process will include: • A comprehensive review of current marketing strategies, including the exploration of current trends and best practice relative to education and schools. • A complete review of the current brand, collateral, publications, website and other communications channels to ensure ease of access to quality information and consistency in all messaging. • Design and implementation of a refreshed brand and strategy that showcases the culture of educating the whole child through innovative learning practices, student advocacy, global citizenship, and academic and pastoral excellence - the essence of the heartbeat and soul - of Adelaide High School. OPENBOOK HOWDEN
Adelaide High School is at an important juncture in its celebrated 112-year history.
3
From first impressions to peering through the porthole Looking deeper, I was able to locate an abundance of information, amongst the considerable noise of the messaging, everything was there, while much of it repeated many times over. More noise. Working with the school, I almost felt there was a level of incongruence between what I was able to access, and what I experienced. I could access information, but I could feel a purpose from the committed and kind staff. Over my numerous visits and meetings at Adelaide High School, I started to feel there were two co-existing entities. One I could see, and another, which through my interactions, I was able to feel; a cover and a story.
Six months later, I am standing in the reception foyer with members of my team; we are greeted so proudly and confidently by Head Prefect Maaika Williams, our tour guide for the day. As we are walking to our first stop of the tour, Maaika candidly shares she is an art and sports student, while also sharing she is also studying a first year science subject at University. A great example of competency-based learning, not age-based learning. A well-rounded student if you ask me. As we walked from the original art deco foyer to the modernity of the Performing Arts Centre, it was like being transported in a Tardis. From yesterday to the now. We find ourselves at a bustling and fun-filled band practice area, drums being played. To the right, students walk into the recording studio and to our left, a room full of male and female students collaborate on a hip-hop routine. Not what I expected.
Next stop, the Maths Centre. Full to the brim, students studying, sharing, accessing teacher support. Peer to peer collaboration and educational mentoring on show, except this isn’t a staged tour; it isn’t even class time. It is their lunch break! I turn to my colleague, ‘impressive’. Midway through, Maaika stops for a moment to engage in conversation with two students, international students, hearing impaired, in Auslan. I am not sure what impresses me the most, her signing Auslan or that the students sought connection and conversation with her. Community. As we tour through the school, we comment amongst ourselves, all noting little details that defy the perceptions that one can form from the outside. We walk through the yards; spotless, through the hub; happy, smiling, laughing students. The cover doesn’t do this story justice.
OPENBOOK HOWDEN
I recall my first time visiting Adelaide High School, a large cream brick building on a busy CBD road. Walking in, my first impression was almost a déjà vu moment of my own public education experience.
5
From first impressions to peering through the porthole The noise cleared for me when we reached the library; it was a place of happiness, respectful interactions, students collaborating and old scholars mentoring and tutoring.
• Internationalism
I had just walked the terrain of Adelaide High School, and the map I was able to access from the outside did not do justice to what is happening inside, within the walls.
These ‘words’, and more, offer insights into our experience, they provide an incredible basis for sharing the story, the success and the trajectory of Adelaide High School with your current and prospective communities.
Later that day, as I sit with my team and we debrief on our tour, we share our insights and takeaways from our visit to Adelaide High School, distilling down our experiences, the DNA of Adelaide High School: • Inclusiveness • Collaboration • Maturity • Kindness

The Openbook Howden Approach The following is our recommended five-staged approach to implement and deliver Adelaide High School’s strategic branding refresh:
Stage 1 | Discovery

The discovery stage helps to inform our thinking behind the brand refresh framework and guides the creative.

Stage 3 is where the elements of Discovery and Direction take shape, and we produce a strategic branding and marketing framework that guides the Adelaide High School brand.

Play your part
Preserving our heritage
The Cathedral’s role as a venue for major civic events and music recitals will be enhanced through the installation of a unique 1927 Casavant Frères pipe organ from St Jean de la Croix, Montreal, Canada.
In the mid-1800s the building of the Cathedral was made possible through the efforts of Bishop Francis Murphy, benefactor William Leigh and a group of committed Catholics.
There are many ways you can participate in this exciting project, whether as an individual or family, as a member of your parish or cultural group, a present or past student of a Catholic school, or simply because you love music, architecture and history.
More than 150 years later, the restoration work - including the restoration and installation of the Casavant Frères pipe organ - is being made possible through the generosity of individuals and groups within the Catholic community and from the wider community. Donate today to play your part in preserving the heritage and gift of our Cathedral for generations to come.
‘Donate’ one of the 3000 plus pipes which make up the recently restored pipe organ. Whether you choose a small high-pitched pencil pipe or one of 12 magnificent 16-foot façade pipes, your gift will be greatly appreciated and recognised. You may like to name your pipe in memory of a departed loved one. Become a Cathedral Champion Act as a leader to conduct a parish or community event, work with your school or parish group to fundraise for a pipe or simply gather a group of like-minded friends and family to make your contribution.
The Cathedral Restoration Appeal is a partnership between the Catholic Archdiocese of Adelaide and the National Trust South Australia.

St Francis Xavier’s
CATHEDRAL
We are extremely grateful for this long-standing support for the most disadvantaged and vulnerable people in our own community as well as throughout Australia and overseas. It is a vital part of our commitment to Living Catholic. Similarly, the restoration of the Archdiocese’s mother church, St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral, is entirely dependent on the generosity of members of our Catholic community through this Appeal. The Cathedral is one of the most significant demonstrations of our faith – from the small group of Irish and English immigrants who had the courage and foresight to build a cathedral, to St Mary of the Cross MacKillop whose deep love for God enabled her to achieve extraordinary things right here in our midst. Today the Cathedral is a symbol of the presence of Jesus in our lives, the source of all the good works of the Church in our own community and throughout the world. Our partnership with the National Trust demonstrates a joint commitment to preserving the heritage of our city, with the disbursement of all tax deductible donations overseen by the Trust. Thank you for your support.

I wish to make a donation!
Supporting the community Every year the people in our parishes and schools raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Church’s charitable agencies including Catholic Charities, Project Compassion, Caritas Australia and Catholic Mission.
