While Malaysia is well known among the average traveller for its beautiful islands, cultural diversity and mouthwatering food, the land’s abundant waterfalls still remain unknown to many, writes Sarah Lim.

Hidden among Malaysia’s tropical rainforests, there are almost 180 recorded waterfalls and counting.

The state of Selangor alone is surrounded by a number of easily accessible waterfalls that serve as a quick escape from the busy city life of Kuala Lumpur. Travellers who appreciate the outdoors will find these waterfalls a safe and refreshing haven to relax and enjoy the beauty that nature has to offer… for free! Well almost. Three waterfalls that I find myself frequently visiting and enthusiastically recommending are at Sungai Sendat, Sungai Gabai and Sungai Pisang.

These three waterfalls are a good place to begin your series of waterfall escapades in Malaysia. Waterfalls are generally quite safe if you stay alert and know your way around. Just remember, never stay in or near a waterfall when it’s about to rain as sudden flash floods are common when raining and can be dangerous. The best way to enjoy your Malaysian

waterfall experience is to always go well prepared with proper attire, a dry change of clothes, yummy picnic food and great friends!

1. Sungai Sendat Waterfall

Search the community Go!

Located just an hour’s drive from KL city, Sungai Sendat in Ulu Yam is a favourite among many local families for the options it provides. The two-tier waterfall has nice rock slide where you can enjoy a thrilling launch off the edge of the falls and fall safely into a roaring pool below that’s less than five feet deep. Camping platforms surround the falls from bottom up with a trail access from one platform to another.

A quiet stream by Sungai Sendat where you can set up a small picnic on the rocks.

Getting there: Sungai Sendat waterfall is a one hour drive or 43km north of KL city centre on coordinates N03 24.21′ E101 41.19′. From the city centre, head towards Batu Caves. Get on the B57 route (also known as Jalan Sungai Tua) and drive for about 26.7km till you reach Ulu Yam Baru town. Look or ask for directions to Sungai Sendat nearby. Entrance fee to the waterfall is RM2.00 per person. Facilities include camping grounds, toilets, showers and car parking.

2. Sungai Gabai Waterfall These falls start with a healthy climb up a series of concrete steps where you get to enjoy fresh misty air and a magnificent view of Sungai Gabai’s roaring waters. Sungai Gabai is best known for what’s at the end of the climb, its child-friendly waterfall slide! This beautiful low-gradient rock formation is the result of natural erosion by the waters of Mount Besar Hantu, all the way in Negeri Sembilan. While parents and children play at the slide, others can get a good shoulder massage from heavier falls at the main tier above.

A healthy climb up a series of concrete steps leading to Sungai Gabai falls.

There’s also a spacious concrete area next to it that’s surrounded by sitting stones which have been set up in an arenalike fashion, probably meant for holding a large picnic group which makes these waterfalls a popular choice on weekends and public holidays. However, be warned: the toilets are not to be used. Just bring a change of clothes and get a friend to hold a covering towel while you dry and dress yourself before hopping back in your vehicle to head home.

Getting there: Sungai Gabai waterfall is located in Kampung Sungai Lui in Hulu Langat, Selangor. It is a one hour drive or 34km north east of KL city centre on coordinates N03° 09.97′ E101° 54.52′. From the city centre, head towards Kampung Pandan and take Jalan Hulu Langat all the way to Jalan Sungai Lui, which brings you to Kampung Sungai Lui. Entrance fee to the waterfall is RM1.00 per person. Facilities include a cement staircase to walk up, picnic areas and parking grounds.

3. Sungai Pisang Waterfall Situated just off the Karak Highway heading towards Bentong, Sungai Pisang is a beautiful gem that’s nestled comfortably among the Sendayu reserve’s lush greenery. The walk upstream is like a secret pathway leading into a quiet and untouched realm full of nature’s beautiful surprises. You’ll first need to walk through a monsoon tunnel and then when the river forks, take the right path. Continue along the stream for about 40 minutes till you reach a clearing where you’ll be pleasantly rewarded with a refreshing waterfall that gently cascades into an inviting pool below.

The cool walk towards Pisang Falls.

You can prop your belongings on a dry rock at the side and take a dip while enjoying the serenity of Sungai Pisang’s pristine environment. Sungai Pisang is one of the less popular waterfalls which means that you’ll probably get the whole place to yourself. Versatile footwear such as rubber sandals are highly recommended for a comfortable experience as you may need to walk through the water. This waterfall should only be visited during the early hours of a sunny day where there’s enough daylight and the water level is low.

Back to top Getting there: Sungai Pisang waterfall is located a 30-minute drive from KL city centre. Drive 24km north on the Karak Highway, using coordinates N 03 19.010′ E 101 43.966′
