FRE SH, C L E AN , S I M P L E... a nd FUN ! N EW M O M S Selecting clothing for your first postpartum photoshoot may seem daunting. Your first instinct may be, “Oh, no, the baby only; not me.” Don’t worry, you have Sarah Lough Photography. I know how to position you so that you look your best while I capture the bond between you and baby. The right clothing can help draw attention to that bond, so choosing something simple, without distracting patterns, is usually best for the new mama. White, cream, soft pink, even charcoal or black, are all great choices. Long sleeves, or three quarter length sleeves, are an excellent choice for emphasizing the tiny details of your newborn. If you would like a little pampering added to your session, hair and makeup are also available to you.
N E W B O RN S The intricacies of newborn skin can only be captured within the first few days of life. Clothing and blankets can hide the delicate wrinkles and peach fuzz many mothers hope to capture. To add texture to your images, I love organic fabrics. I have several simple hats, wraps and blankets that I will provide for your session, or you can personalize your images with your own items. Typically, I caution against “outfits” as they usually overwhelm your newborn. Save the fancy, busy clothes for the visits with grandparents. If you feel the need to include a special outfit, bring it for the end of your session, and I will make sure we capture a few images. Have a look at my portfolio to view colors and choices for more inspiration!
BABIES While I love whites and neutrals, I also like to incorporate bursts of color by using soft crochetted hats, bows, or delicate blankets. I typically advise against anything that is too trendy, items that will date your photos, or outfits with statements (as in “Daddy’s little helper”). However, many clients wish to incorporate heirloom blankets, quilts, and other sentimental items in their newborn portraits. Please communicate with me about specific props you wish to use so we can accomodate your preferences.
FAMILY This is a family event, so all loved ones should feel wecome to participate. Including other family members in your newborn portraits intimately documents their life with those who loved them first. I encourage the inclusion of Dad, siblings, grandparents, or other loved ones, so please take advantage of the opportunity to capture their unique relationships. In keeping with the newborn theme, coordinating outfits requires simplicity. Neutral palettes, worn in jeans, or bare toes will not distract from capturing the bond they share.
