Urban Planning Portfolio

I have worked as a consultant for LCPS for 6 months during which I gained extensive knowledge on how Syrian refugees have reconfigured the Urban space in Halba. This job opportunity helped me to develop my mapping skills further and broaden my knowledge. I was referred by my advisor Dr. Mona Harb for the job because of my excellent research and investigative skills. I have shown outstanding performance in her planning workshop course where, in a class of 12 , I completed the course with the highest grade . Previously, I have interned for a couple of Architecture and Engineering companies such as NABCO and Ghalayini construction office where my responsibility involved mostly design and detail work in office using computer programs. I also have been very fortunate to intern at your esteemed company for a month assuming an assistant role to the site Architectural engineer. I performed site inspections and shop drawing modifications. I am currently finishing my thesis “ which I’ll be defending in early November. My thesis topic was based on my work in Halba with the LCPS where I made use of the data collected throughout my work to tackle an issue I was interested in exploring further.

I am computer proficient with the ability to use or learn any program needed to map out areas for projects and to predict costs and trends. I am confident that I have the skills and experience needed to fill this position and I hope to meet with you soon to discuss it in more detail. .

Driven to improve my life and the lives of others. I will achieve this through knowledge, hard work, taking pride in what I do, and putting the interests of others before my own. •

To never be satisfied with what I know.

I will always find and implement new ways to expand my knowledge

To apply my strong work ethic by doing the best I can at every task

To take pride in everything I do and accepting nothing short of my best effort

To put the interest of others before my own, by giving back to my community and doing my part through charitable efforts

Tarek El Jadideh (TEJ) neighborhood is located on the eastern border of the Beirut municipality (It is separated from the suburbs of Beirut via Kaskas highway and Horsh Beirut (fig.2). The main arteries that encompass this neighborhood are Sabil, from north, and Jalloul Street, from south. The neighborhood consists of two national landmarks and several city scale landmarks which give it a

significant importance. In this section of the portfolio I represent the maps that I have produced for the planning and design workshop supervised by Dr.Mona Harb and Ibrahim Mneimneh’s at the American University of Beirut. The study was conducted to understand the qualitative social and spatial aspects of a zoomed in area, in my case zone 4 (Sabra, Houri and Hamad Street). The analysis is not only to describe the existing situation but also to identify critical issues facing these streets, deduce key objectives and form a significant consensus on urban topics; regarding the characteristics of the streets.

Goals/objectives: •

Maintain the mixed character of SB and reinforce its long-term competitive position through building on its present assets and counteracting its envisioned threats.

Rethink SB as a city destination and not just as a local commercial street with mostly a link role to enable traffic to move through.

SB is an inclusive place for different users (from different genders, ages and socio-economic backgrounds) to participate in different activities.

Decrease traffic congestion and enhance/ improve pedestrian and users’ experience

5.1.Framework The conceptual framework on which I’m going to ground my strategy has been inspired primarily by Coupland’s, and Carmona’s notions of mixed-use development in high streets.(Carmona,2015) Grounded in this framework the project’s general strategy aims at achieving its main goals by first formulating a strategy that utilizes the strengths, addresses the weaknesses, harnesses the opportunities and neutralizes the threats of each of the following main issues in a holistic manner because each depend and is effected by the other:

The physical fabric will play a critical three-way role; enabling or disabling the other high street functions If a street or pathway is physically uncomfortable and unattractive people will avoid it or choose to travel by car. Desirable activities that create pedestrian places, such as recreation, Window shopping, etc., will not take place if the pedestrian environment is uncomfortable.

Movement, both in and through a high street, will determine its land use and market viability, but, if too intense, may also undermine its exchange potential.

The real estate (land-use) mix will influence the attraction of the high street to users, who, once there, will generate exchange potential

Inter alia, the exchange function will be determined by the physical, movement and real estate qualities generated by the particular context.

Action Areas: The integration of the proposed strategies have been applied in 3 main action areas along the SB corridor: .Action Area 1: The abandoned lot in this area will be used temporarily as a flexible meeting and event zones to reanimate the street’s activity. We suggest its possible subdivision into 2 flexible zones: Zone 1: Matbakh settet Sabra: Space can be appropriated for food market where the women of Sabra can sell and market their homemade food (Fig.12-13) Zone 2: Mountazah Bayhum: Used as a public garden on ordinary days and furnished with flexible furniture so that the space can be easily appropriated for organized events and festivals (Fig.14).
