Design Manifesto
D E S I G N - M A N I F E S T O Collective Experiment exists because we believe that fashion’s throw away mentality needs reprogramming. Easy access to low-cost clothing has fuelled passions of excessive consumption. We aim to challenge the current fashion system, by educating our customers and inviting them to get hands-on designing and making their own clothes. We set up Collective Experiment for creative women who are fed-up of being told what to wear; who value high-quality clothing that reflects their unique personality. Clothing that is beautiful, timeless and meaningful. Here at Collective Experiment, we aim to‌
One
Consider the Bigger Picture
CO N SIDER - THE - B IGG ER - P ICTUR E We recognise that every decision we make has a direct impact on the world and people around us. Slowing down fashion allows us to take a step back and design considerate garments. The average amount of fabric wasted when a garment is cut is 15 percent. In 2015 the clothing industry produced an estimated 400 billion square meters of fabric, meaning that 60 billion square meters of fabric is thrown away before the garment has even reached the sewing machine. These statistics shocked us into action. We have taken an empathic approach to design; eliminating fabric wastage by integrating pattern cutting into the design stage. Each pattern is carefully considered to discover the best design solution, using every inch of the fabric.

Enable Co-Design
E N A B L E - C O - D E S I G N
Involving our customer in the creative process allows them to build meaningful connections to their clothing. We know that our customers want clothing that displays their personality. By inviting them into this process we can make sure each garment is fit for purpose and successful in upholding our customer’s identity. Here at [brand], we celebrate personal style. For we know that clothing which positively displays a wearer’s identity is invaluable and much less likely to end up in landfill. This approach allows us to educate our customers.

Educate and Inspire
E D U C A T E - A N D - I N S P I R E
We aim to teach our customers the skills they need to create garments that represent their unique personalities. Our how to guides and easy to follow tutorials make it possible for anyone regardless of their experience to get involved; opening up a new world of creative possibilities. Customers are encouraged to share new crafts and reinvent traditional methods of making. We hope that this will develop into an extensive online platform, where we can inspire each other.
Four
Slow Consumption
S L O W - C O N S U M P T I O N
We recognise that the fashion industry has reached turmoil; slowing down our consumption is essential. To do this we encourage classic design, over fast fashion trends. By teaching our customers how to produce good quality, long-lasting garments and encouraging them to constantly update garments, adopting a frame of mind where a garment is never finished. This approach increases design potential and clothing longevity.
Five
Encourage Mending
E N C O U R A G E - M E N D I N G At the Collective Experiment we believe that mending is a radical act; forming a bond between garment and wearer. It inspires pride in ownership and encourages creativity. We make it our responsibility to make sure our customers own the skills required to mend garments themselves. It is our passion to develop a collective of women who are passionate about the upkeep of their clothing. We educate customers on how to care for garments, how to mend them and at the end of their long life, how to dispose of them responsibly.
We invite you to join the Collective Experiment. Mix with like-minded, creative women, and enter a new way of thinking about clothing. Embrace your personal style and ignite your creative flare.
