We all were schooled on the Wizarding World of Service. We participated in an opening activity, several forums, receptions, and an awards banquet! We also listened to the Keynote speaker, Kent Julian, who taught us to be successful through controlling our reactions to our circumstances.

I plan on making this the best year that T-O has seen and making your term as easy as possible. Please cooperate with me as this will be a learning process for us all, but I know we will get through this together. If you ever need anything from me, I will be here. Secretary
"Hello Mighty T-O District! As most of you know, I am your new District Secretary. I am 17 years old and Junior at Randall High School in Amarillo, Texas which is part of Division 33, Region 1. A fun fact about me is I'm a major coffee addict and play bass clarinet (the black saxophone). My main concern is making sure all your clubs are aware to send the reports to myself for the month of April. Also, I want everyone to know I'm available for any questions because I want to make a connection with all of our board. If you ever need me, you can contact me at shelbymorton00@gmail.com or (806) 316-6857. Also, if you get questions regarding my address for reports it is 4104 San Angelo Avenue, Amarillo, Texas 79118. I look forward to meeting and becoming friends with each of you." Yours in Service, Shelby Morton
Treasurer
"Hey guys! I'm Sabrina Palma and I'll be your District Treasurer for the 2017-2018 year. A little bit about myself: I am from Rowlett, Texas (in the Dallas Area), I've been in Key Club and varsity swim since my freshman year, and I'll be a senior next year. I'm numerous clubs and extracurricular activities on top of being in IB classes, so being busy is no stranger to me. I also have an overweight dog named Goose who I love very much. I'm excited to work with all of y'all this year. I would love to have closer relationship with everyone, so feel free to contact me anytime for anything! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be your District Treasurer and let's have a great year!" Yours in Service, Sabrina Palma

The journey out to Key Club’s next location of service had been a scenic but lengthy one; myself and some other members of the Denton High School Key Club had taken over half an hour to arrive at the site in the middle of Pilot Point near Lake Ray Roberts. The ground was littered with scattered, crunchy leaves that crumpled beneath our feet as we trekked further into the woods. Looming ahead of us was the rusted entranceway to an ancient and abandoned cemetery, home to the remains of many long-forgotten African-American slaves. As we observed the site and engulfed ourselves in its mystery-shrouded aura, we knew that it was time to embark upon another one of Key Club’s memorable and beneficial service project. Upon passing beneath the entryway, our little group of volunteers was suddenly sent back in time as our guide-charismatic Peggy Riddle of the Denton County Office of History and Culture--informed us that the remnants of the cemetery dated back to the 1800s. After county leaders had agreed to restore the cemetery in June, crews had removed more than an acre of overgrown brush to begin working to honor the people buried there. Riddle’s team worked to get the cemetery labeled and recognized for the church and the St. by Natalie Parks, Denton High Key Club president

John’s community that had once buried its fallen members there. A predominantly African-American community of freed former slaves, St. John’s likely utilized the cemetery until as late as the 1930’s when the society was absorbed into surrounding ones, and the cemetery was lost. We got in quite the workout as we hauled, shoveled, and raked mulch to prevent the growth of new vegetation and brambles. We worked through the morning, and our efforts paid off. The location appeared much different than it had before: the gravestones sprinkled throughout the site were completely visible and one could navigate through the grounds without stumbling into the brambles. By dedicating our time to the restoration of such an archaic, history-laden cemetery, we not only engulfed ourselves in the rich history of past events and people who had long been forgotten, but received the opportunity to open our eyes and hearts to the importance of preserving history. Through exciting service opportunities such as this one, Key Club has given me the circumstances necessary to grow as a person, allowing myself to realize that I am able to impact both the pasts and the futures of many. Thanks to the efforts of Key Club, I was granted the opportunity to breathe life into a historic landmark and bring respect and honor to the lives of those buried long, long ago.

Major Emphasis Projects

One of Key Club's Major Emphasis Projects, Children's Miracle Network, is giving our clubs an opportunity to fund raise! The Duck Race is a charity fundraiser where plastic ducks with numbers corresponding to tickets are dumped into a swimming pool to compete in a race. The owner of the lucky duck wins a monetary prize. Each ticket sells for $5. I encourage each club to attempt to sell twenty. Please contact me if you are interested!
