Welcome
A
s parents ourselves, we all know how mind-blowing, life-changing and sleepdepriving having a baby can be. So, with some of those feelings in mind, we’ve gathered together a group of likeminded companies. All of them exist for roughly the same reason: to try to make life a little easier for you, whilst helping you have lots of fun along the way. There’s a common theme amongst the companies we’ve chosen. They’re nearly all small and individually owned, operating within South Wales. But, more importantly, many were inspired to do what they do now through the birth of their own children. Which means they all have some understanding of what you’re currently experiencing and how best they can help you. In order to make things simple we’ve created three different sections:

WHAT A DAD says: “Before I had children, the idea of a café just for parents and 0-5’s would have been hell. Now, after becoming a dad, Café Junior is my idea of heaven!”
I
f you’ve ever struggled to enjoy a meal whilst coping with your baby or toddler, you’ll immediately understand why Café Junior is such a genius idea.
Parents can relax and enjoy the delicious drinks and food (all with an emphasis on healthy) whilst watching their children busying themselves in the play area, specially designed to stimulate the imagination. Or, should you fancy popping on a posh frock and doing dinner instead, you’ll find the café transformed into a wonderful bistro. But, despite the soft lights and music, you’re still welcome to bring your little ones along as well.

What We Say: “Quite simply, this is a totally brilliant, much needed idea. And we can’t understand why there are not more of them all over the country. Definitely a worthy winner of Mamas and Papas’ ‘Most ChildFriendly Eatery’ award.” Talk to us: T: 02920 345653 W: www.cafejunior.com Babi Cymru Offer: Show them your copy of Babi Cymru and they’ll give you a free cookie on a Princess or Buzz Lightyear plate. To cookie heaven and beyond…!
What a mum says: “It’s a wonderful introduction to music in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Apart from being a highly accomplished performer, Judith has a lovely way with the children, all of whom she gets to know very quickly. This is a very special activity.”
L
ife as a professional cellist certainly prepared Judith Souter for her new career, introducing children to the myriad benefits of real music. ‘When my children were small I couldn’t find classes with live instruments,’ she recalls, ‘and I thought that was a real shame. So when friends of mine - also classical musicians - asked me to start Little Notes in Cardiff I thought it was a brilliant idea.’
Judith plays both cello and piano in sessions and she loves the fact that the family is learning together. ‘We’ve rather lost the art of singing lullabies in the West,’ she says, ‘so we’ve sourced lots from across the world, and they’re wonderful to hear. Not least for the children, who love nothing more than listening to a parent’s voice.’ Although her cello is apparently almost as popular. ‘Babies are calmed by its deep vibrations,’ she explains, ‘making for wonderfully relaxing sessions!’
What We Say: “As parents of children who love playing instruments, we know just how much joy their music gives them. And anything that makes music an everyday part of children’s lives is fine by us.” Talk to us: T: 02920 026 559 E: www.littlenotes.org Babi Cymru Offer: Judith is happy to let you try her first session for free if you mention Babi Cymru when booking on.

t’s often said that a baby crying is just a baby talking. But wouldn’t it be great if we could be a bit more specific in working out what they want?
TinyTalk baby signing classes help you tune into your pre-verbal children, so you’ve got a better chance of working out their needs, thoughts and feelings. Using traditional nursery rhymes and action songs, babies also begin to learn simple signs (using British Sign Language), which gives them the satisfaction of knowing they’re starting to communicate, as well as a solid foundation for developing speech and language in pre-school years. Babi Cymru Offer: You’ll get a free TinyTalk sturdy canvas shopping bag (RRP £5) when you book a term of classes, quoting Babi Cymru. 06
Babi Cymru :: 2013
What a mum says: “Just wanted to let you know that Carys has started signing. She’s always loved her food so the first sign was milk! Like you said, other signs have followed quite quickly such as bed-time, food and bath. It’s good to be able to communicate with her and understand what she wants.” What We Say: “We know how frustrating it is, not knowing what your baby wants, and we’ve heard mums saying that it’s like being given the most amazing gift every day, being able to communicate with their little ones.” Talk to uS: W: tinytalk.co.uk T: South East Cardiff: 07990 585374 Mid Glamorgan & Gwent: 07584 486820 Bridgend, Cowbridge & Rhondda: 07763 641512
What a mum says: “Tots Play provides a great mix of activities, so we didn’t have to choose a whole course of just one thing. We love the variety and it keeps all of the babies (and mums!) really interested throughout the class.”
I
f you want to try lots of activities with your baby but don’t have much time in your schedule (nor the inclination to do the rounds) you might want to consider just one weekly session with Tots Play.
Launched in 2009 by Helen Gillies, it combines massage, yoga, music, sign language and sensory or physical play. And hopefully a guaranteed sleep at the end of the session! ‘As a mum myself, with almost ten years experience of running baby classes, I know it’s often not easy, working out good ways to stimulate a small child,’ Helen reflects. ‘Children learn best when using their whole body and all their senses, so I developed Tots Play to allow them to do just that. What I love most is seeing both parent and child develop and flourish during their time with us.’
What We Say: “We love the fact that Helen’s developed an on-line course and downloadable resources for use at home as well. Which must beat simply pulling all the pans out of the kitchen cupboard!” Talk to us: T: 01633 897841 E: www.totsplay.co.uk Babi Cymru Offer: Email info@totsplay.co.uk and quote Babi Cymru to receive a Free E-Book “How to Play with Your New Baby” and free downloads of 12 of the most popular Tots Play songs. here’s little that beats seeing a tiny baby enjoying the complete freedom that being in warm water allows. Or watching the pride on a parent’s face as their two year old swims the width of a pool. Happily, Jacqui Grant and Aletia Griffiths know very well how all this feels. They met when they took their sons to Water Babies lessons and were so impressed they’d soon joined the crew. Now, nine years later, they’ve taught more than 7,000 babies and toddlers to swim - and, remarkably, still spend their days off together! ‘Water Babies is so much more than just a swimming lesson,’ Aletia explains. ‘It’s the new friends you’ll make; the fun you’ll have, cantering round the pool on woggle horses and singing along to Wheels on a Bus. Or the fact that you’re teaching your child a core, potentially life-saving skill, right from the word go.’

ew mums know the benefits of post-natal exercise better than Clare Wheeler. Whilst pregnant with daughter, Emily, she put on an impressive five stone, but was back in her jeans after nine months. However, the experience made her realize that exercising with a young baby isn’t always easy, as she didn’t want to put her in a crèche or leave her with a babysitter at home. So, with a career as a personal trainer already behind her, the idea for Buggyfit was born: a great way of exercising with your baby in tow. With sessions taking place in peaceful park locations, they cater to all levels of fitness, from six weeks after having your baby to mums with older children. Clare also offers specially tailored classes to pregnant mums (although not so many buggies at those!)
What We Say: “Fun, fitness, fresh air and the chance to make new friends in the park. There couldn’t be a nicer way to get back into shape.” Talk to us: T: 0777 232 3829 W: www.fit4two.co.uk Babi Cymru Offer: Mention Babi Cymru when you book and lovely Clare will give you £5 off your first block of sessions.

hen Karen Purchase first tried Cook’s food, she was so impressed by its taste and quality, she invited her friend Liz Smart round to dinner and before long they were opening their own Cardiff shop. Both previously teachers, they love their new careers, as well as being part of an exceptionally friendly team. ‘It really is a true family business’, Karen explains. ‘Every dish is hand-prepared, without additives or preservatives, signed by the chef who made it, then blast frozen to retain the nutrients. We’ve personally gone and watched them at work and it’s a fantastic experience.’
The duo are also keen to point out the excellent value for money the meals represent. ‘A lamb tagine for four costs £17.95. When you consider the lamb itself will cost you about £15, you realise what a good deal it is. We know many people love preparing meals but often simply don’t have the time. And trust me, lots of people tell us we’re a secret godsend when it comes to dinner parties!’

WHAT A MUM says: “Phil and I really enjoyed the couples’ session on Saturday, which he described as ‘inspirational’. He’s recently been reading about positive thoughts in sports psychology and thought this was like a practical workshop covering the same strategies. ‘I can see why you go,’ he said. And he’s so much more interested now.”

ith six children between them, Laura Fergusson and Claire Duddridge are passionate about helping women achieve a positive birth experience. ‘What I love about our classes is that they help women feel in control of their labour,’ comments Laura. ‘They’re about having an active birth, whilst staying calm and relaxed. I also think that education creates confidence.’
Classes run in blocks of six, with most women doing two courses. ‘The yoga element means they have a very practical effect. We can do a lot to help babies get into a good position and relax key birthing muscles, as well as demonstrating moves to use during labour.’ Both teachers are also keen to encourage friendships, providing more great support. ‘And these bonds particularly strengthen in our post-pregnancy Daisy Baby classes,’ says Laura, ‘which offer baby massage and yoga.’

aving young children can be pretty tiring, and sometimes you need just a bit of ‘me-time’ to restore you. So what could be more perfect than a city haven, specialising in health, beauty and relaxation. Ener-Chi is just such a dream, founded in 2003 by Judy Mancuso. ‘I wanted to do something that addressed the mind, body and spirit,’ she recalls. ‘Somewhere you can fully relax, knowing you’re in the hands of skilled and friendly professionals.’ Today Judy has two salons, in Penarth and Radyr, offering a range of holistic treatments, as well as products to take home and continue the blissful experience. ‘We try our very best to give a five star service,’ Judith says, ‘and we’re delighted that our customers often comment that it’s something we’ve achieved.’

id you know that 70% of women suffer from pregnancy-related problems after giving birth? Well, with 30 years experience as a chartered physiotherapist, it’s something
Nicky Munro Dawkins knows only too well. ‘I find it so frustrating,’ she says, ‘that with just a bit of knowledge, women could save themselves a lifetime of post-natal issues.’ Which is why she’s set up her classes in Cardiff and Bridgend,
What We Say: “And we thought trampolining just wasn’t for mums! It’s a brilliant concept, that having the proper information and knowing a few simple exercises can make such a difference post birth.” Talk to us: T: 07548 522 928 E: www.physiotherapybridgend.co.uk

t was Nicola’s original training as a ballet dancer that led to her interest in physiology and functional anatomy. Then, after experiencing pregnancy firsthand, she realised there was a real gap in the market for pregnant women needing the immediate relief of massage.
‘I’m really proud to have trained with one of the best maternity practioners in the UK,’ Nicola says, ‘and a correctly-targeted massage can achieve so much. My experience in sports massage, coupled with specialising in pregnancy, means I can help relieve SPD, sciatica symptoms and their associated muscle imbalances. And I love the instant results. It’s wonderful to see women who walk in with a lot of pain, leaving an hour later like a different person, without the pain and visibly more relaxed and moving so much better.’ Babi Cymru Offer: Nicola will give you £5 off your first treatment if you mention Babi Cymru, or a free pot of Tui Bee Balm (great for pregnant mums bumps and babies’ bottoms).

am Gately founded Smooth Starts for the very hardest reasons. When pregnant with her second child, she developed a rare condition that made even simple tasks extremely difficult. Then, a traumatic birth meant she felt her ability to enjoy being a new mum was almost impossible, given the amount with which she was coping. ‘I wanted practical assistance, but also something very flexible,’ she recalls. Her professional experience as an Occupational Therapist gave her further insight into other issues parents face, which is how she came to set up Smooth Starts in 2012. And she’s created a much-needed, award-winning model. ‘What started as practical homehelp soon developed into a co-ordination service for parents, and now includes specially tailored help with finding both child care and therapy services throughout South Wales.’
Babi Cymru Offer: Unusually, we think that what these guys do is so important, we persuaded them not to give an offer. But please check them out if you know anyone who’s struggling in any way post birth.
What a mum says: “When my son was diagnosed with autism, Smooth Starts was invaluable in terms of directing me towards the most helpful services, as well as providing very practical support. To be honest, I’m not sure how I’d have coped without them. ” What We Say: “So many of us have had personal experience of difficulties post-birth, which present in so many ways. You’d think that help would be immediately available, but often it isn’t. lmost all babies are born with abnormal head shapes, partly because their skulls are malleable to help with the birthing process. Occasionally babies’ heads haven’t returned to their normal shape within six weeks, and at this point it’s important to seek a professional diagnosis.
Lisa Williams, a qualified physiotherapist specialising in cranial work, set up Vitality in Motion in 2009 as a private alternative for families who’ve not managed to find a solution through the NHS. ‘Plagiocephaly, also known as flat head syndrome, can be a worrying thing to have diagnosed,’ she says. ‘However, the great news is that it does respond extremely well to professional treatment. ‘We offer a range of solutions and pride ourselves on having the time to really get to know the families we treat. The fact that we see a 100% success rate in correcting babies’ head shapes is extremely rewarding and I feel very privileged to be so beneficially involved in their lives.’ Babi Cymru Offer: If you mention Babi Cymru when you see Lisa, she’s offering a generous £100 off the Cranial Helmet treatment. 16

f you ask these very special doll makers what their most important word is, they’ll immediately reply: imagination. ‘It holds the key to doorways into new worlds, adventure and magic,’ explains Nicola Evans, who, together with Lisa Pearce, runs the business from Bonnie Towers in Penhow. ‘When we were little, our own dolls, named Bonnie and Pearl, were constantly with us; part of everyday life, sharing family mealtimes or searching for unicorns at the bottom of the garden. ‘Now we make dolls that evoke the feelings we had as children. We want to capture the excitement and joy that comes from opening the box for the first time and knowing that you’ve found more than a toy. You’ve found a friend.’

e’re really proud to be recommending JoJo Maman Bébé in our little booklet. Not only are they an internationally renowned company, selling fantastic products in shops that employ noticeably lovely staff, but founder, Laura Tenison, grew up near Abergavenny, South Wales.
In 1993, Laura realised there was a gap in the market for stylish maternity wear and, taking her inspiration from the Breton style, set about designing some. Two decades later, Breton still features strongly as a motif, whilst the company has grown into a one-stop shop for maternity, baby and children’s clothes and nursery products, selling on-line and in 52 stores across the UK.

hoosing a nursery for your little one is an emotional decision, and no-one knows this more than Little Angels in Cardiff. ‘As parents ourselves, we know exactly how it feels, leaving your baby or toddler with others to look after,’ says Delyth Cowmeadow, who together with husband, Lee, founded the nursery in 2004. ‘Which is why one of our core principles has always been to be as helpful as possible. For instance, being based in the city centre, we open early and close late, so we can fit in with parents’ busy working schedules. We’re also a home from home nursery, where we follow each individual child’s routine. It’s not always easy, (bottles and food often going out at all different times) but we strongly feel it makes for a happier overall environment.’ With bright, open-plan premises, the staff provide children with fun-filled days, full of stimulating learning through play. ‘And we’re really keen on communication as well,’ says Delyth, ‘with detailed reporting processes (including lunchtime calls if they want), so parents always know what their little ones have been enjoying.’
What We Say: “As a mother of four herself, we’d say that makes Delyth pretty expert in the personal experience of child-rearing. And if the rest of her staff are as full of fun as she is, we just know it will be a very happy place.” Talk to us: T: 02920 480845 E: www.littleangelscardiff.co.uk Babi Cymru Offer: These guys are offering a very generous 5% off your child’s first six months at the nursery. mallprint describes itself as a family of jewellers who’ve set up their unique craft businesses around the world; and we’re lucky enough to have three in South Wales!
The idea was born when Bristol-based founder, Maija Pykett, had the idea of imprinting her son’s fingerprint on a piece of silver, which she then made into a necklace. ‘I loved the fact that it made me feel closer to him when I returned to work, being able to wear his tiny fingerprint in such a personal and attractive way.’ When Natalie, Joy and Julie came on board, they were equally enamored with the idea that the fingerprint is pressed directly into the silver, ‘Meaning your keepsake has actually been touched by the one you love,’ explains Natalie. ‘We also really appreciate the fact that we’ve all become craftspeople through being a part of Smallprint. And, as our range is continually expanding, we’re constantly learning new skills with which to delight our customers, many of whom return time and again.’

n 2007, Sarah Stone turned a well-loved hobby into a business, after realising there was a gap in the market for on-location portrait photography without any hard sales. Today she’s photographed more than 1,000 families throughout the UK and internationally, either at their homes or at a location of their choice. ‘I have the most rewarding job in the world,’ Sarah says. ‘I’m a real people person and love getting to know the families I work with. Over the years I’ve made so many new friends and feel totally honoured to have been given the opportunity to create more than just pictures.
