JOHN KILEY EVENFALL TRAVER GALLERY

JOHN KILEY EVENFALL John Kiley’s newest body of work is a study of pure form. It is an investigation of both the subtleties and the complexities of line, color, curve and shadow. Widely recognized for the exceptional formal refinement of his blown, cut, and polished glass sculptures, Kiley continues to push the dynamic sculptural qualities of his work forward in this new exhibition, Evenfall. The title, a reference to the moment when day turns to evening, directly connects the qualities of these striking glass sculptures to the familiar and awe inspiring moment when the sun sinks low in the sky and new layers of light and color materialize, when shadows lengthen dramatically and silhouettes emerge on the horizon. Kiley’s newest sculptures are, like that moment of Evenfall, dramatic, mysterious and changing. There is poetry in these simplified forms; layers of complexity revealed only upon inspection. In each one there is a reward for patience, contemplation and meditation. It is exciting to see an artist who has found his stride continue to demand more from himself, from his medium, and from his audience. It is with great pleasure that we introduce this new body of work to you.

Here, the sun sets behind mountains. On clear summer days, lingering afterglow displaces long shadows. In the midst of evenfall in the foreground of distant peaks, a landscape of once invisible hills and valleys emerges. For a moment, shape, shadow and silhouette materialize. Textured outlined forms reveal themselves and then vanish, along with the hues of the sunset, before fading to black. John Kiley
