Line. Pattern. Color. Curve. Shadow. Dante Marioni and John Kiley are widely recognized as two of the most accomplished glass sculptors of their time. These artists, like their mentor, Maestro Lino Tagliapietra, continually push the limits of glass as a sculptural medium and challenge us to see glass in new ways. For more than 28 years, they have been close friends and frequent colleagues, providing each other with critical feedback, support, and mutual inspiration. Now, in Incalmo, they come together as collaborators. The sculptures included in this exhibition are a union of the artworks they make individually. The carefully balanced, cut, and polished spherical forms embrace rings of intricate, contrasting patterns; concordant layers of complexity revealed only upon inspection. In each piece, Kiley and Marioni reward us for patience, contemplation, and meditation. “Incalmo,” says John Kiley, “is a glass blowing technique where two or more distinct sections of glass are joined together to form a single piece. Maestro Lino Tagliapietra once told me that Incalmo was also the Venetian dialect word used for “graft,” as in the grafting of branches from one fruit tree to another... these collaborations take what we do as individual artists, join it together, and let that new thing possess its own life”. It is exciting to see two artists who have found their stride continue to push themselves to see and create in new ways; to make harmonious artworks from shared joy, friendship, and craft. It is with great pride that we present this new body of work at Traver Gallery. Sarah Traver, Director Traver Gallery 1
